How Everton’s improved defence has damaged Calvert-Lewin’s supply lines

Leicester 0-2 Everton

  • Goals: Richarlison (£7.8m), Mason Holgate (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Alex Iwobi (£5.9m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m)
  • Bonus points: Holgate x3, Richarlison x2, Wilfried Ndidi x1 (£4.8m)

YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO FORCE YOURSELF GODFREY, THIS IS WAR

Carlo Ancelotti has finally solved his full-back crisis and managed to improve Everton’s defensive potential at the same time.

Without Lucas Digne (£6.1m), Seamus Coleman (£4.8m) and Fabian Delph (£4.9m) due to injury, the Toffees boss admittedly took some time to find a viable alternative, finally stumbling across it against Chelsea – and deploying it to good effect on Wednesday too.

In Everton’s last two matches, Ancelotti has used centre-backs on the left and right of a four-man defence, namely Ben Godfrey (£5.0m) and Mason Holgate (£4.8m) respectively.

The end result has been a sudden leap in clean sheet potential. They have two shutouts from a possible two since the switch, more than the Toffees managed in their first 11 matches of the campaign.

That is, of course, an achievement made all the more impressive by the calibre of opposition in that time, Chelsea and Leicester both watching their recent run of hot attacking form halted by Everton.

With Arsenal (home) and Sheffield United (away) up next for the Toffees, anyone interested in a quick defensive return could find it on the blue half of Merseyside.

That said, Fantasy managers should take care before jumping on Robin Olsen (£4.5m), who came in for Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) for only his second start of the season at Leicester.

It appears that Ancelotti has not dropped his English shot-stopper, taking the opportunity of a tight turnaround to allow Olsen some minutes, rather than seriously challenge for the number one jersey.

“It’s a normal rotation. I want to give Robin (Olsen) opportunities to be involved in the squad. I have confidence in both of them – Jordan is doing really well in this moment.” – Carlo Ancelotti

Meanwhile, Everton could potentially suffer in the absence of defensive midfielder Allan (£5.3m) who sustained a hamstring injury in the first half at Leicester, which could rule him out of more games than usual during this busy time of the year.

WHAT’S CALVERT-LEWSIN?

Meanwhile, Everton’s recent improvements at the back do appear to have negatively impacted on Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.9m) Fantasy potential.

He is now two games without a Premier League goal, his longest dry run of the campaign thus far, although he has contributed two Fantasy assists in that time. And, were it not for an incredible save from Kasper Schmeichel (£5.5m) on Wednesday night, he might well have found the net at the King Power Stadium.

That said, it is still worth highlighting a slight regression in Calvert-Lewin’s service in this new-look Everton side, with much less prowess in wide areas.

Any team that replaces marauding full-backs with centre-halves is going to have less joy on the flanks going forward, as we have seen for the Toffees recently.

James Rodríguez (£7.7m) has also been a sore miss, especially considering how erratic Alex Iwobi‘s (£5.9m) crossing has been while deputising on the right-hand flank of the front-three.

While the quality of opposition over the last two matches could also be a factor in Calvert-Lewin’s form, it is worth remembering that Everton remain inside the bottom three on the Season Ticker for attacking potential between now and Double Gameweek 19.

VARD LUCK

It was another disappointing result for Leicester at the King Power Stadium, who have lost more games and conceded more goals than they have won or scored themselves this season.

It only serves to reinforce the existing trend regarding Jamie Vardy‘s (£10.3m) form this season, with just 28 of his 89 FPL points (31.4%) coming in home matches so far.

Vardy owners would be wise to retain some faith in the Leicester forward though, not least because three of the Foxes’ next four matches are on the road, where 61 of his points have come in 2020/21 (68.5%).

But the veteran centre-forward was also somewhat unfortunate to blank against Everton, certainly a lot more involved in making things happen than earlier in the campaign when he was almost entirely reliant on penalties.

Vardy set up James Maddison (£7.1m) for a shot from range in the sixth minute and half-way through the opening period, James Justin (£4.9m) managed to get the better of Godfrey and put a cross on a plate for Vardy – whose effort was caught by Olsen.

Leicester were then awarded a penalty in the second half, which Vardy would, naturally, have taken, only to see VAR chalk it off, before Ayoze Pérez (£6.0m) was adjudged to be offside when turning the number nine’s knock-down header into the net from a corner.

Leicester City XI (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel; Fuchs, Ndidi, Fofana, Justin; N Mendy (Iheanacho 73′), Tielemans; H Barnes, Maddison, Ünder (Pérez 62′); Vardy.

Everton XI (4-3-3): Olsen; Godfrey, Keane, Mina, Holgate; Doucouré, Allan (A Gomes 41′), Sigurdsson; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin (Gordon 90′), Iwobi.

    GW14: Justin > Coufal
    GW15: Chilwell + Bruno > Dias + Sterling

Hi Beavis. All transfers from here should probably be planned according to GW18/19 strategy

      gw14 Justin to Coufal
gw 15 Chilwell to Zouma/James and keep 1ft

      something like that imo

Thanks mate but I have my first WC which I will use in GW16 (the last possible time to use it). So for now I'm just looking to maximise points in only these next 2 GWs.

Wouldn’t be getting in son to immediately get rid. Wouldn’t get rid of Bruno either. This week Justin to Coufal then maybe look to get rid of Mitchell and get Son/Kane.

Hi guys. Looking at FH18, BB19, WC20 after Camzy's great post yesterday

    Current team (2ft, 0.6itb)
    Martinez Steer
    Zouma James Taylor Justin Mitchell
    Salah KdB Son Bruno Soucek
    DCL Bamford Adams

With 5 transfers (in order hopefully):
    Mitchell to Coufal (gw14)
    Justin to Dallas (gw15)
DCL & KdB to Kane & Mount (gw16)
    Steer to Fabianski (gw17)

Looks ok? Or am I going backwards 🙂

It looks like an okay plan but I think I would feel a bit uneasy a) getting Mount in and b) using 3 of my next 5 transfers on DFs/GKs. Might set you up well for the DGW but seems a missed opportunity to maximise points before then.

are you planning to keep kdb and son?

Keeping Son, Kane, Martinez with only 1 game in gw19. Will use bench boost anyway. Then get everyone I want back on wildcard gw20.

I get the feeling to attack. I dont see the need of WC GW 20 in this plan. Can sell one of the expensive bench player after GW19.
It sounds like using chip for the sake of it. Especially WC as it's most imp chip.

FH18 & BB19 looks good to me. And I am at 2.8m OR atm so pathetic start here as well 😆

My current thoughts are ignore GW18. Fixtures don't scream points. Main upside of a free hit here will be if you can nail the City picks (and even that doesn't guarantee points anymore).

For my side, I'm looking at Free Hit in GW19. As it stands I'm pretty happy with my squad and don't want to focus my transfers planning for matches weeks down the line (esp with covid factor).

It could be a disaster but it could be good, Spurs and City having good fixtures swings it for me (FH in 18).
        Mocked up a team last night and thinking something like this;

        Ramsdale or Darlow or Patricio
        Reguilon - Clyne - Holgate
        KDB - Sterling - Son - Neto - Zaha
        Kun - Kane

Pep could screw it over big time though

It’s a bit over priced, for me it would have to be Ramsdale and Dier not Reguilon. Obviously many factors involved like will Kun even be an option. But it’s a decent team imo

I think I will do this. I can play 10 in GW18 and 8 DGWers plus Kane + Son/KDB + Martinez in GW19 with just one hit. That gives me a more balanced team for GW20 onwards and I will still have WC,FH and BB for the long, probably turbulent second half of the season. Only downside is GW19 performance will be very dependent on Salah (TC), Kane and KDB and red arrow is likely.

Brough Ryan in for this run, Fulham and SHU. Finaly Brighton could put on the field the good defensive stats they were posting on paper, and they did. Ryan was not even on sqad, and now Potter is saying he lost his place.

A: Burke >> Norwood or any other playing mid upto 4.6m + carry FT

I wonder, did you decide on your WC16 team? If yes do you mind sharing? I am asking because my WC16 team will help me to decide my chip strategy with GW18 and 19
Do you see any benefit of WC in GW15 instead to have more time to think and ride some price rises perhaps?

i.e. who are the extra 4 that are making up the free hit template as of now?

Looks decent I would say, but I'd add one or two more if you can manage it...

My head is dizzy trying to plan what to do about the blank and double.

I'm kind of set on doing FH18 and BB19. But, anyone else who is planning this as well, I'd love to know your answer to two questions...

    1) How on earth are you going to bring in the bench players, GK and other decent squad players with only 5 transfers between then and now? I have Mitchell, 4mil GKer, and a whole host of SGW week players I'd be happy to lose... Obviously, I'm not going for 15 DGWers, but still....

    2) What are you going to do with the playing bench players you bring in? I know that we can WC after DGW, but I'm worried it will screw me over for the later blanks & doubles whenever they may be...

Pick a plan and Stick to It.

I am on Gw19 FH ship.

Tempted by this too, what’s your reasoning

    2. have you seen cyan

I’m lucky probably, already have 8 players with doubles. I will also keep Kane and Son. I will BB, so I will use my FTs here on out to get my bench up to scratch, and bring Bruno and Adams in for Grealish and DCL in GW16.
So then I will have 12 players with doubles and bench ready for boost, if all goes to plan.
I will still have one shoddy player though which will be Bissouma and no real funds to upgrade him, it would also take a -4 to upgrade him, so he probably stays I guess.

Depends so much on your own team, say if you only have 4 players with doubles at the moment then you are in a tricky spot, you could use the second wildcard to build the 19 team.

If you could somehow do Bissouma > Soucek (or Raphina) then you'd be looking absolutely spiffing for DGW

Already got Soucek, there’s literally no one I can afford tbh as will only have 4.7 to play with unless I took a further hit and downgraded one of Chil, James or TAA which doesn’t seem logical. Given it would then be -8 and downgrading one of them.
I’ll have a look closer to the time, I’d even take Lookman if I could

    GK debate.

A lot of people already have Martinez (most popular pick at present)

*If* going with BB for DGW 19, who is the best accompaniment to bring in around GW 15/16 ahead of Emis poor fixtures ?

    A) Meslier
    B) Johnstone

Meslier is the better player, in a better team & with better fixtures so him for sure

If you can manage GW18 even with 8 players i feel it is okay to go.

I have 10 with PVA Lamptey and Burke who have bad fixtures and Burke might not start. But with the defenders in GW18 you cannot predict who keeps the cs

I will go with 5/6 mostly. Only need Son for (c) I suppose.

Wondering if I will do similar. If I've got Son, Kane, KDB (C) I don't see many points to be gained elsewhere.

    E) Dias to Coufal

    McCarthy Button
    Chilwell James Dias Ayling Mitchell

True, it depends on how much you trust Welbeck and Soucek imo... in isolation Coufal is deffo the better pick with his attacking threat for me but if you want to save money then Taylor is also great

    1 FT & 1.8mn itb.

    Mccarthy (Forster)
    Cancelo Justin James Lewis (Taylor)
Bruno Son Salah Soucek (GORDON, Soucek)
    Vardy DCL Wilson

    A) Gordon to Podence (play Podence and Bench Lewis/Justin)?
    B) Save FT

Cancelo to Dias with FT? If Cancelo doesn't play I have Coufal coming off the bench vs Chelsea, or I could do Neco to Taylor/Lewis and improve bench

I'd be careful with this transfer if I were you.
I have a feeling Dias is due a rest soon and Cancelo has started the last 3 Prem games so he's probably due a rest soon too.

I also have Cancelo and I may just hold and see what happens v's Sou. If Dias is rested, buy him the next week and count your lucky stars. If he plays and Cancelo is rested, then just keep Cancelo

Using 1FT on Mitchell to Coufal and have Dallas or Coufal first sub. So will save and maybe get Dias next GW.

Should I use my spare FT to upgrade my def 3.9m to Taylor (WOL) with one eye on bench boost in GW19 or should I downgrade my to a 3.8m def and play one of Dallas (man utd) / Coufal (che). Downgrading will offer more flexibility in getting Son in GW16.

Taylor is a good target (I own him)
I would suggest upgrading to maximise dgw and then downgrade to cheap 5th def when you plan to wildcard again

Re gw18, what do you anticipate to be a good score with only 5 fixtures.
I'm likely going to own max 5 players who play this week so trying to calculate (roughly) potential points upside for using FH vs holding it

    60pts across usual 10 games = par
    so 30+ in 5 games?

          fair call
i own wilson now but tempted to ditch him in gw15 for Ings (or Antonio if avail)
dont see villa v spurs fixture being high scoring - basically rests on which City team turns up

    Best replacement for Gabriel?

Thinking Vestergaard but already have McCarthy and not sure about the double up on Southampton defence.

    0.1 short for Cresswell.

    Ogbonna?
