How I plan to make the most of Blank Gameweek 18 and Double Gameweek 19 in FPL

FPL Family’s Sam gives us some initial thoughts on which chips she’ll be using and transfers she’ll be making ahead of the upcoming Blank and Double Gameweeks.

When the Blank and Double Gameweek announcements come, I always like to leave it a few days to let the ground settle before I make a decision on my strategy.

Those first few days after the announcement are awash with contrasting views on how the Gameweeks should be played and there is a lot of discussion about how a certain strategy is the right way to manage these weeks.

The reality is that there is no universal right way. Some FPL managers will find themselves with teams of almost 11 players for the Blank Gameweek, whereas others will maybe only have three or four players. Some of us will have our Free Hit chips intact, while others won’t.

I always find that, after a couple of days, I am able to restrict the noise around the Gameweeks and focus on my individual team. This means that I am in a better position to plan for these Gameweeks and of course the free transfers that lead up to that point in the season.

Double and Blank Gameweeks can often be maximised with a long-term plan in mind, in order to avoid the use of hits and, in some cases, the need to use precious chips.

Black Gameweek 18

Maximising the potential of blank Gameweek 18 and double Gameweek 19

For me, the FPL chips are there to be used aggressively.

If used in a Double Gameweek, the most a Free Hit can do is give you 11 players who play twice. Whilst on paper this seems great, the reality is that other chips have more explosive potential.

Using a Bench Boost can give you up to 15 Double Gameweek players, for example, while the Triple Captain chip will supply you with 11 assets and additional captain returns.

This is why I believe that the Free Hit should always be used in a Blank Gameweek to maximise its return potential.

There is a decent chance that Gameweek 18 will be our biggest Blank Gameweek of the season and so using the Free Hit chip makes sense here.

Firstly, it allows you to use free transfers to target Double Gameweek 19 (more on that later). Secondly, it allows you to have a full squad of the best players available for that week only.

Kane and Son deliver again as Spurs prepare for appealing fixture swing

This Blank Gameweek sees the likes of Spurs, Man City and Everton play, meaning that it is easy to choose a team of players that could easily return good FPL points that week. Son Heung-min (£9.7m) and Harry Kane (£11.0m) are currently second and third in the FPL points table this season, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.9m), Jack Grealish (£7.8m), Callum Wilson (£6.6m) and Wilfried Zaha (£7.5m) all feature in the top ten and have unaffected fixtures in Blank Gameweek 18.

My team currently contains six players who will play in the Blank Gameweek:

  • Harry Kane
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Son Heung-min
  • Tariq Lamptey
  • Ruben Dias
  • Yves Bissouma

For the first couple of days after the announcement, I did consider using my transfers to build for a Gameweek 18 team. However, doing this would mean using my Free Hit in Gameweek 19, which I feel limits my potential for points returns. But more importantly, building a team for Gameweek 18 with my free transfers would mean losing players such as Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) and Salah – which I definitely do not want to do.

Ahead of Gameweek 14, I removed a player who does play in Gameweek 18, Ollie Watkins (£6.1m), in favour of a player who doubles in Gameweek 19, Patrick Bamford (£6.4m).

There are of course risks to doing this, especially if the offloaded players return in the weeks ahead of the Double and Blank Gameweeks.

However, the players that I am bringing in for Gameweek 19 are also players that I would prefer to hold long term, and thus that opens the possibility of holding onto the second Wildcard until the next wave of rearrangements – including a potentially significant Double Gameweek 26.

I’m currently aiming for a Free Hit side that looks like this:

Whilst of course this may change with injuries, player form and price changes, I feel that this gives good potential for returns during Blank Gameweek 18. I would play a 3-4-3 formation as follows:

  • Jordan Pickford
  • Gary Cahill
  • Ruben Dias
  • Jamal Lewis
  • Jack Grealish
  • Son Heung-Min
  • Kevin De Bruyne (c)
  • Raheem Sterling
  • Harry Kane (vc)
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin
  • Callum Wilson

Double Gameweek 19

Here is the opportunity that we as FPL managers love the most – the potential to have the majority of our team play twice and further increase returns with the Bench Boost or Triple Captain chip.

Up until late afternoon on Monday, this looked set to be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season. However, the announcement of the moving of the League Cup final from Gameweek 26 to 33 could have ramifications for FPL managers.

As we start to learn more about that Gameweek, my view on whether to use my Bench Boost or Triple Captain may change. But at this point, having as many players as possible playing feels like the way to go – and thus I’m planning to play my Bench Boost in Gameweek 19.

Unlike many other FPL managers, I will not be fielding 15 Double Gameweek players. As is always the case, there are ‘single’ Gameweek players who could return big and punish those who transferred them out.

Spurs play only once but their opponents are lowly Sheffield United, so Son and Kane could easily rack up tidy hauls. The same is also true of the Manchester City boys, who only play Crystal Palace in that Gameweek.

As it stands, I currently own eight Double Gameweek players and have four free transfers left before I play my Free Hit in Gameweek 18. By using those four transfers carefully, I can ensure that I have 12 Double Gameweek players as well as three further single Gameweek players – who will likely include Son and Kane – to enable me to make the best use of the Bench Boost chip.

My FPL squad is presently as follows:

With this as a base point, I plan to do the following to ensure premium coverage of the Double Gameweek:

  • Gameweek 15 – Tariq Lamptey to Stuart Dallas
  • Gameweek 16 – Ruben Dias to Reece James – if fit – or Vladimir Coufal
  • Gameweek 17 – Fraser Forster to Sam Johnstone and Yves Bissouma to a £5.1m-ish midfielder, such as Matt Philips, Ademola Lookman or, if Arsenal have improved, Bukayo Saka.

In doing this, I can have a team which still includes Kane, Son and Calvert-Lewin for their nice single Gameweek fixtures but allows me to bring in Double Gameweek players who have nice fixtures and who I am happy to hold longer-term.

Can Robertson sustain value advantage over Alexander-Arnold after 10-point haul?

The only issue with this strategy is a lack of a Liverpool defender, who I would really like to own.

But, as with the premium attackers this season, it isn’t possible to have all of them and thus I might have to go without Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.2m) or Andy Robertson (£7.3m) for the Double Gameweek. It is possible to budget for Joel Matip (£5.4m) to at least cover for the Liverpool clean sheet potential, however.

Over the next few weeks, as we understand more of the ramifications of Gameweek 26, my thinking may shift away from the Bench Boost and towards the Triple Captain. If this happens, then I can tweak some of my transfers as I won’t, for example, need a playing second goalkeeper.

It will also mean that I won’t need to remove some of the players who have nice fixtures between now and Gameweeks 18 and 19 and could mean that I can budget for that premium Liverpool defender given the lack of need to upgrade others elsewhere.

The Complete Guide to Scout’s tips and advice for FPL Gameweek 14 1

If the Triple Captain becomes my chip of favour then I will put it on someone trustworthy and in form. Liverpool’s games against Manchester United and Burnley look good for handing the armband to Salah and thus he’d probably just get the nod over Fernandes, who has Liverpool and Fulham.

Concluding Thoughts

Planning for the Double and Blank Gameweeks in advance is key. I’ll be carefully watching the markets with regard to the players that I am targeting for Gameweek 19 so as not to be priced out of owning them.

For me, using the chips to aggressively return as many points as possible, rather than to cover up areas of concern, is important – maximise singles with the Free Hit and maximise doubles with the Bench Boost and Triple Captain.

Most importantly though, focus on your own team. It’s so easy to listen to what others are doing because it’s right for their squad and because of the chips they have available. Play the game for your team and to give you the best start over the course of these extraordinary Gameweeks.

    Robbo, Dias, Dallas
    Salah, KDB, Bruno, Grealish, Soucek
    DCL, Bamford

first WC intact. Try and set myself up to field 9-10 in BGW & DGW.
Going to avoid using the chips for the BGW and DGW. The fixtures in BGW look thin on the ground and fixtures in DGW don't really jump out.

Use the chips later in the season.

Was my initial thought. But I went through several permutations, none let me maximise for GWs. You'd want KdB, Son, Kane, Grealish, DCL in BGW and Salah, Bruno, Robbo/Trent and Bamford in DGW. Moving from one group to other without hits is just not possible. Also, owning all of them is out of question as well. WC may help you navigate it better. But, people trying this without WC may end up taking far too many hits or miss out on crucial players.

Read the article on site by Sam of FPL Family for starters, if that makes no sense then you have no hope unless you try thinking for yourself. No one on here could even begin to sit down and work out your strategy either, without knowing your squad, or without having to double think (excuse the pun) and confusing yours with their own (strategy that is) which is obviously more important. As a final solution you could just to delete your squad and give up all together :-).

Klopp is looking to bring through younger players. Take a look at the average age of central midfielders in that team. Ox or Keita won't dislodge Jones in the starting lineup. Jones has earned that spot and now his to lose.

Don't expect to see expensive signings at liverpool in the future. The 50m training complex was built to develop players through the academy in a La Masia esque model. There is a great deal of work taking place in the background to coach the academy players to accelerate their development.

Doesn't this just mean he'll rotate with the four fit midfielders, rather than permanently bench them?

There's still Thiago and Milner to return too. Klopp hasn't been known to stick to a nailed midfield for quite a while now

"If used in a Double Gameweek, the most a Free Hit can do is give you 11 players who play twice. Whilst on paper this seems great, the reality is that other chips have more explosive potential... This is why I believe that the Free Hit should always be used in a Blank Gameweek to maximise its return potential."

I can't disagree more. I don't even know where to start... Go back any number of years, highest scores for many people reading this in many seasons have come from DGW Free Hits and Bench Boosts, not one over the other

2 biggest DGWs: Bench Boost and Free Hit. 1 smaller DGW: Triple Cap. It's been this way for a while

Remember Salah's BGW explosion? When people taking 6 players into a BGW could match or get close to those on a Free Hit because the games are so few, so limited, that there's an automatic template of 6 to 7, with your Free Hit used to get fillers... Greatly limiting the potential of that chip

And yes, there'll be two major DGWs again this season: GWs 19 and 26, with smaller DGWs involving Bruno or Grealish and KDB: https://twitter.com/BenCrellin/status/1341081340779884546?s=20

Hmm FH in the blank us better for me since i only have Son and KDB for it. Rest of team is filled with double playing guys. It's vrry dependent on each individual team. There's no 1 best way.

      1. Zimo
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

U can get a lot of good players with decent fixtures in this blank anyways i think because its not the usual blank with boring teams. We have Kane, Son, KDB, Sterlng, DCL, Wilson, Zaha, Grealish etc.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 4 months ago

There aren't a lot of good players. There's a template of good players. Let's not pretend all of those in the template will start (Sterling, Stones), play well (Wilson, Zaha) or have good fixtures (Spurs, Villa)

It's limited and hopeful and can't compare with a DGW Free Hit for the most important aspect of the game: points

But yes, it does depend on the team structure you already have. My comment was addressing the quote from Sam's article that somehow tries to say Free Hit in DGWs limits the chip's potential. That's alarming

          1. Zimo
            • 5 Years
            3 years, 4 months ago

Yes he shouldn't outright say that. anyone smart enough will know it's a dumb statement by the article writer. Ur comment with let's not pretend they'll do well or start makes no sense to me since that's true of every single week for every player. There's a template for the double as well btw and u saying outright that FH18 can't compare to 19 is also just as wrong as the article writers statement. I already have a solid team for the double so FH19 doesn't compare to 18 for me.

            1. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years

City: Sterling and Stones can and have been benched randomly this season
Wilson and Zaha: Newcastle have been simply bad since the Covid-19 period, with Wilson getting by without playing well (hence my point about playing well). Zaha has been horrible recently, with his recent explosion coming after the opponent had a first half red card and then capitulated in the second half, an occurrence that's unpredictable
Spurs vs Villa is not a good fixture for both Spurs and Villa attackers and defenders. Do you disagree with this?

FH18 can't compare with FH19 on points potential. I stand by this. I don't see how it can be argued that a BGW Free Hit can beat a DGW FH for points, ever. Especially when you factor in the fact that there's another DGW coming in GW26, where you can use the Bench Boost chip... Returning to the tried and tested chip template: FH and BB in the 2 major DGWs, TC in a minor DGW, FTs for BGWs... Which is my point

The point is not whether a FH18 gets you more points or FH19. It's which FH gets you more points than the team you could field in that GW.

The thign with getting the template this year, is you have to lose the players in form and have good fixtures.

The 6/7 player templatw would include KdB, Son, Grealish, Kane, DCL

To fit all those in, you'd have to lose Salah and Bruno now, which jusr doesn't look right. Given the fixtures for the player I mentioned aboe in GWs 15 through 17, those are the players you would rather lose based on form and fixtures (barring Son and Kane).

I was referring to the quote from Sam's article, and saying that her argument that a DGW limits the Free Hit chip's potential is rather alarming for an FFS article.

You've also pointed out something that can be done with 1 rolled FT:

GW18: Salah + Bamford > Kane + Grealish for free (or any other template combo)
GW19: Kane + Grealish > Salah + Bamford for a hit (or any other template combo)

Covers the BGW and DGW template. One spare FT can be used between now and GW17, or a WC for those who have it

Not my moves, but covers your point

It's not really "alarming" sir. Settle down. I agree with her point. It does limit the potential for those who won't have even 3 players for the blank

SO that means no Kane for Fulham and Leeds then. Doesn't really look ideal. And that's just for two players. FH template will most likely have more than 2 players which you don't have. So, you mighr end up taking mmore hits anyway.

Also, you don't account for losing all the value you had in players like Bamford and Salah just for one week.

That sentence is very confusing. I agree with your strategy, maximize the biggest DGWs with FH(19) and BB(27) - take a smaller DGW like the possible one in 17 and use TC. The highest potential comes here. In a BGW it's about having the right players, if you can get the likes of Son, Kane, KDB there's zero reason to spunk your FH especially with those poor fixtures. It is, however, very team dependent - if you're fielding 4-5 in 18 then you should definitely FH.

Exactly and for many to get the likes of Son, Kane, KdB and DCL, it means selling Bruno and Salah, which makes zero zense.

I agree with you in principle on the whole, but to prepare for 18 with FTs likely necessitates selling one or probably both of Bruno and Salah to be able to get Kane, Son and KDB (and whoever else you want from city).

As always, it’s entirely dependant on your current squad and the fixtures immediately before and after the GWs in question.

Yeah. I think she tried to justify where her team stands and the moves she'll make by generalizing that onto where all teams stand. It's just not true. But if its what works for your squad, then it's your best move

Heck, there have been teams that had to use the Free Hit in a single GW because many of their players were unavailable for one game only. I wouldn't advise anyone without enough players from the GW18 template to roll through it and have a GW rank of 5 million

W18 is the biggest blank of the year says the article. Will it?

    If so, best free hit.

But usually there is a massive blank on Week 33/34/35 or so

Any chance I can get away without using FH for gw 18 with this squad?

    Meslier Martinez
    Chilwell Konsa Coufal Kilman Mitchell
    Salah Bruno Son Grealish Anguissa
    Kane Bamford Adams

    1 FT 0.8 ITB.

      Giggity

And this only really works short term: he's good for the next three GWs, blanks, has two horrible DGW fixtures, and GWs 20 to 22 are just as bad. Couple this with Burnley's refusal to attack a lot, and you have a short term punt who only really attracted you with his latest goal... I guess

There's a list of better assets for the medium and long terms, which is usually the aim of a wildcard. Probably the guy you're selling, even

S'oton doesn't really respect fixtures, so I'll say Adams. Could easily be a long term hold too

Burnely attackers are just not worth it.

Adams is worth a shout. (ful, WHU, LIV)
Leicester and Leeds away in the double aren't as bad they look. Arsenal and VIlla post the DGW. So could be a set and forget till GW 22.

Can switch to Antonio anytime as well

    Salah Son KDB Grealish Soucek
    DCL Bamford

    Forster Chilwell Brewster Ferguson

    2 FT, 1.7 itb

Is this a good plan for this week:

Chilwell >> Coufal (or Taylor) to use an FT with GW19 in mind... then with 2FT next week Grealish DCL >> Fernandes Wood (or Adams)

    Yes or No

If you're going to BB wk19 then you need active players so Mitchell, Button, Brewster are not guaranteed starters - Stones is not 100% either.

    A) Wilson -> Adams
    B) Chilwell, Wilson -> Robbo, Welbeck (-4)
    C) Chilwell -> Mendy
    D) Chilwell, Wilson -> Walker, Adams (-4)

Defence is Chilwell, Cancelo, Taylor, Justin, Douglas. With Cancelo starting yesterday I can see Justin/Taylor being the only ones who play..
