Aston Villa confirm signing of Southampton’s Danny Ings

Aston Villa announced the shock signing of Southampton striker Danny Ings (£8.0m) on Wednesday evening.

With the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) fraternity and wider footballing world awaiting the rubber-stamping of Jack Grealish‘s (£8.0m) seemingly imminent move to Manchester City, the Villans threw us a curveball by confirming the capture of Ings.

The 29-year-old forward follows Leon Bailey (£6.5m), Emi Buendía (£6.5m) and Ashley Young (£5.0m) in making a summer move to Villa Park.

Villa head coach Dean Smith said of Ings’ capture:

Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played.

He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team. I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great club.

The move may well have ramifications for Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), FPL’s most owned forward – at the time of writing, anyway.

In the half-hour after Villa’s announcement, his Fantasy ownership percentage had already dropped by 0.3%.

Ings’ own figure had risen from 4.4% to 4.7% in that time.

Watkins was a nailed presence in the Villa attack in 2020/21, missing only one game through suspension and completing 90 minutes in 36 of his 37 appearances; the only time he didn’t was due to a late-season red card.

There’s an obvious rotation risk now, then, although it should be said that Watkins played his first two seasons at Brentford mostly on the flanks so he and Ings could be incorporated in the same system, even without a move to two up top.

What that would do to Watkins’ goal threat is another question, of course: he scored 10 goals in both 2017/18 and 2018/19 when playing mostly out wide but 25 as a centre-forward in his final year with the Bees.

We’ll have more coverage on this story in a Moving Target piece tomorrow.

Iheanacho might not start (Daka/Vardy). Antonio - injuries and WHU have European football/might get another striker by the end of the transfer window. Wilson injured. Richarlison Olympics. Bamford - just get Raphinha because fixtures aren't great. Watkins and Ings - rotation/uncertainty over position. Fixtures are only good for 3 weeks.

            Have I missed anyone?

You can have your opinions, but calling DCL a donkey is a bit much. And I've not written everyone else off, but I think DCL is the best option with the limited knowledge we have for the start of the season.

I replied to you earlier with the tongue in cheek comment "You're a ray of sunshine, aren't you?" Now I'll send it back to you but I'm not joking. If all your going to be is negative, just stop commenting please.

#1 I didn’t give him the nickname. #2 I know you just got here but Donkey has been disappointing for years. Has a good start to last season but then quickly fell back to donkey status. #3 I’m not telling you not to buy him; in fact please do.

I'm probably way behind with this one, certainly makes Greenwood more appealing.

Edinson Cavani has not been present in #mufc training almost five weeks after Uruguay's elimination from the Copa America quarter-finals. Quarantining is believed to have delayed the return of certain players #mulive [@samuelluckhurst]

Not in terms of going bust, but for the PL's profit and sustainability rules (PL version of FFP). Every team is only allowed to lose/spend a certain amount of money over a period of 3 years. By buying Bailey, Ings and Buendia (and possibly more), they are committing to selling Grealish this year or next.

These rules are why Everton didn't buy Bailey and Dumfries having agreed a deal, because they are at the point where they'll be punished if they buy without selling, and don't have the years leeway Aston Villa do.

Of course they will have done, but they have to sell at some point unless they get UCL this year, which is probably unlikely.

Ings has had good pre season minutes. Great fixtures for Villa and in a super attacking set up. Far better player than Watkins for only 0.5 more. He’s a no brainer for me now. Ready to roll 😀

    Sanchez - Foster
    TAA - Digne - White - Fofana - Omabamidele
    Salah - Bruno - Jota - Fraser - Bissouma
    Ings - DCL - Antonio

    Thoughts? 🙂

        Just the price point.

Can’t find any better with decent enough fixtures for the first few at 5.5.

Plan is Jota > Gundogan GW 2
        Save FT GW 3
        Fraser + Ings + Gundogan > Barnes + Raphinha + Jimenez in GW 4

I’m thinking of not going with Bruno and yes l know last season he was the top scoring midfielder. My thinking is l can bring in x3 quality players with the spending difference.this affords me. Also new penalty ruling will mean Bruno won’t get so many pens now. The arrival of Sancho will also effect his assists. Without Bruno this also allows me more flexibility, to bring in other players far more easily. No Bruno breaks most people’s templates, so this allows me t be ahead of the ga me.

    Your thoughts pls.

Am l crazy to go without Bruno?

No shortage of other options at the price range. Watkins was always a bad pick, be grateful

Don't panic mate. There's plenty more water to flow. If you were happy with your draft, sit on it for a bit

Kane worst season was 17 goals (2400 mins - injury). Lukaku second best season was 18 goals in 3200 minutes.

So depressing.. Kane and Haaland on offer and we blow 100m quid on a chump who couldn’t even make our first team in his prime.

Just going to hurt Havertz up top with his complete lack of tactical awareness

Is there anything to read in to the fact that not only is Reece not playing tonight, but the person playing in his place, Chalobah, is wearing Reeces Number 24?

Players don't normally lend their shirt number out do they?

    1. Chandler Bing
      • 7 Years

No. Shirt numbers don't matter during friendlies. Players swap them around all the time.

Leeds getting torn apart by Ajax. Have caught a few Leeds friendlies now, can't read too much into them ofc but they seem as porous as the start of last season
