FanTeam €200k winner Josh Wooldridge’s best team reveal for £1m Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

It’s only days until FanTeam’s season-long 2021/22 Premier League Fantasy game gets underway, with another guaranteed £1m up for grabs.

And who better to turn to for advice on the big-money FPL-style game than Josh Wooldridge, the winner of last season’s €200k first prize.

Josh is writing for Fantasy Football Scout in the upcoming campaign and, having provided us with some top tips in his first article, he reveals his latest team draft here.

Hi all!

With the Premier League season beginning this coming Friday, it was an easy decision with regards to what to write my FanTeam article on this week.

I am going to do an in-depth analysis on my favourite draft, explaining why I picked each player, and I will even throw in some alternatives on one or two spots that I need a bit more information on.

I hope you enjoy!

Goalkeepers

Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m)

This was a tough call for me. I started the summer wanting to pick Dean Henderson (£5.0m), but it looks like he is now going to miss the start of the season. Bachmann has the ability to make lots of saves, in a Watford team that set defensive records in the Championship last season. At such a budget price, I think he has two avenues to points- and will make enough saves, and hopefully keep enough clean sheets, to justify this inclusion.

Ben Foster (£4.0m)

Foster is the natural understudy to Bachmann. I love pairing goalkeepers together from the same team, as long as they cost a combined £8.5m or less. I am confident Foster is second choice at Watford, and trust that he could step in if needed – both for the Hornets and my Fantasy team.

Defenders

.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)

Alexander-Arnold is such a powerful option on any Fantasy game, providing he is fit and the Liverpool defence looks solid. Whilst last season didn’t show much evidence on the latter, hopefully the return of Virgil van Dijk (£6.0m) can help to rectify last year’s defensive woes. Alexander-Arnold missing out on the Euros could be a blessing for Liverpool, who now have their star defender fully rested.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m)

Everton’s poor pre-season form is a slight worry but I always like Digne in Fantasy games, as he has the threat at both ends of the pitch. I think the £5.5m price tag is more than reasonable, and under Rafael Benitez, you would hope that the Toffees defence becomes even more solid. With Gylfi Sigurdsson (and potentially James Rodriguez) potentially out of the picture, Digne may take a larger proportion of set pieces this year, which can only help his FanTeam output.

Joel Veltman (£4.5m)

With many casualties in the Brighton defence and a few additional doubts, Veltman is one of the last men standing for the Seagulls that I am confident is nailed. £4.5m is a fantastic price for an asset from a team with such strong expected defensive numbers as Albion, and whilst the injuries may set them back, my three £4.5m defender picks are chosen with a more long-term strategy in mind.

Luke Ayling (£4.5m)

Ayling was probably the most attacking player in the league last year not to register an attacking return. He was unlucky on several occasions last time out, and I am confident that he will get several this time around. He also rotates perfectly with Veltman, so it makes sense to pick alongside the Brighton man.

Nelson Semedo (£4.5m)

I was slightly worried when I saw that Semedo wasn’t in the Wolves squad over the weekend but it has since come out that he is merely isolating due to contact tracing and will be available for selection for the opening Premier League fixture. Wolves do not have a good first three matches but Gameweeks 4-7 are particularly strong fixtures. With this in mind, I am happy to pick who I deem to be one of Wolves’ most nailed defenders, with some attacking potential as a bonus.

The only obvious, and probable answer, is that over a period of time I’d wager B outscores A for pts.

      Individually.

Bruno, Son, Mahrez, Wilson, Toney, Benrahma... in that order.

However... Bruno is a (c) pick. Sadly, no matter how many goals he scores, Son just never feels like a (c) pick.

I think he'll be very solid once Lukaku is up and running. Made a lot of chances last season that weren't finished. Only issue is his goal threat isn't what it used to be as he's generally playing deeper now with the likes of Havertz and Ziyech further up the pitch so can't see him getting too many goals that aren't shots from distance

      1. Dr Dream
        • 11 Years

The very fact that Lukaku will sign means the whole team may change the way they play.

I’m always struck by an interview Alan Shearer gave where he said he was constantly insisting on very early balls played forward both in training and during games. I’m quite sure many forwards have a similar say in how teams play.

Mount may be gold if he clicks with Lukaku...

That's true, I think Lukaku is best when playing on the shoulder of the last man and that's definitely something the likes of Mount, Havertz and Ziyech can exploit. Chelsea do tend to build up a little slowly at times but the pace that players like Werner and Pulisic can inject can make that difference if they need to speed up attacking play

    A) Benrahma, Mahrez (Veltman bench)

First RMT of the season, though i suspect it'll change about 512 times before Fri.

    Sanchez - Ward
    TAA - Shaw - Coufal - White - Amartey
    Bruno - Salah - Bowen - Raph - Tella
    Ings - Antonio- Toney

    Tella > 4.5
    Coufal > 5.5 wise?

      • 8 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

not sure about tella but seems a waste of 0.5 when he's not nailed and is probs locked to ur bench anyway? seems reasonable to downgrade him to 4.5. Coufal is an ok pick and u already have shaw so idk why u would want to get a different 5.5. Money in the bank is better left than that move imo.

Even though it has a bench made by Jesus in his I can make wine from water phase, I still really like the potential for this team:

    Sanchez / Steele

Shaw / Tsimkas / TAA (Amatey, Livramento)

    Fernandes / Salah / Mahrez / Barnes / Benrahma

    Wilson / Ings (Perica)

Won’t have a third playing defender after the IB. Also don’t have any bench for mahrez and potentially Barnes rotation. Looks great for a gw 4 wc though

Thoughts on bench boosting gw 1? Seems we’ve been given a gift with 2 4.0 defenders with great fixtures for the first gw and think this might be the best way to capitalize on it. BB always seems to be a bit of a pain and let down during the dgws

    1. Bad Kompany
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

For the 8th attacker you could get tells/smith rowe for a little bit more than a fodder. There’s no great 4.5 gk options unfortunately. Pickford and Leno have good fixtures but I’m not sure if they’d be worth the extra .5

It is an annoying chip to hold but with Covid this winter there might be more DGWs so useful to hold onto.

      1. Bad Kompany
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Maybe but maybe not. Very few will have a decent 8th attacker and playing second gk anyway. Plus there’s a fair chance at least one of your cheaper defenders will have a bad fixture. Only way to have a really good bb is by using wc, but I’m not sure if that’s the best use of the wc, which is our best chip

        1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

I disagree that you can only have a good BB by using WC, it seems to be a regular idea here from a lot of people that base their WC around setting up for BB but that's nearly bound to fail with unexpected injuries or knocks and benchings. I've had lots of weeks in the past where I feel like nearly all of my team has the potential to have a good week or DGWs where my bench has 2-3 players that will likely play the best part of 2 games without specifically using another chip just to set up for that. If you're convinced your whole team will play GW1 and can all score well then go for it, but I've just never gotten the idea that BB is a waste and more than anything a hassle to deal with. Everyone has benching headaches at some point, if you have that one week and an FT spare and a non-playing player on the bench with enough to upgrade them for one week it can be worth a go.

          1. Bad Kompany
            • 6 Years
            2 years, 10 months ago

For you to be well set up to bb in a dgw without wc, you'd probably need a lot of luck. I remember last season during the dgw most had Leeds assets who only had 1 game and did very poorly. I agree that it could be really well used in a sgw if you have a bench headache, that's actually why I might use it gw 1. I have TAA, Shaw, Veltman, Tsimikas, and Amartey as my defense who all have good fixtures in gw 1. I could easily just spend another .5 to 1 on my 8th attacker and gk to have a full playing bench. I'll likely wc early anyway (gws 4-7), so I won't be wasting much money on my bench for long, which is what having a playing 8th attacker and backup keeper would require unless you decide to wait until the very end of the season to use wc and bb, which we agree probably isn't the best option

        2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
          • 3 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

Just to clarify I know you said yourself that you think just using WC for a BB might not be the best idea so I'm agreeing with you there! It definitely can work out but I think it needs to be used on its own merits more often.

It's sort of hard to compare them I suppose. I think Jota is always a more explosive option, however Greenwood is a better finisher which closes the gap. I think both are good picks, albeit could go either way.

Is targett nailed with Young there? Tsimikas is a waste on your bench. If you want me, start him. Unsure if soucek after his price hike and now Europa league

Young is in for cover. At his age there is no way that he is taking over full time. Can always switch to Cash too, but I am confident in Targett. Tsimikas I probably will start, just on my bench for now.

Soucek is tricky. He is absolutely nailed that is why I like him, and he is a threat. Him & Targett are the positions I am struggling with...

Targett should start most but think he’ll miss some here and there. I’d prefer 2 4.5s to rotate to also help your bench. At 6.0 there aren’t any standout mids. Benrahama has become popular on here. Sarr is another one. Smith Rowe for 5.5. Soucek probably has the least question marks but is also the least exciting

In the past I get to excited about promoted players or players who are looking exciting in pre season. Hence Toney is my only true risk since he is new to the PL. I want the household names - so I agree Soucek not flashy and a top pick, but we know what he can do and I like that for the short term.

Could go with two 4.5s to help bench, but I think Livramento has a shout to play (biased Chelsea fan though). Struggling with the defenders at 4.5 with Fofana injured. Ben White only option that seems to be popular.

      Good pick

Good pick. Flatters to deceive. Good pick

Good pick. Good pick. Good pick Good pick.

Good pick. Not sure yet. Good pick.

You just need them to deliver to order now.

Schmeichel not so attractive without Fofana and Evans. I see the potential for Digne, especially now Siggy has removed himself from free kicks because of his weird other kicks but don't fancy Everton at all this season.

Toney is loved around these parts but could just as easily do a Mitrovic in the Prem and with his ownership be a required transfer when he starts dropping fast.

I admire the inclusion of welsh singer Duffy, haven't seen her in a lot of teams round these parts.

That “potential” with Digne is like a constant echo these past two years. There’s no doubting the “potential” but he just doesn’t quite deliver on it.

Morning, pretty much there, just one spot im playing around with-

    Sanchez
    TAA Tsimikis Coufal Shaw
    'Havertz' Salah Bruno Raphina
    Ings Toney
Foster Veltman Brownhill Obafemi 2.0M ITB

    A. Start like this and move Havertz on later to a MC mid or Son, 2M ITB
B Mahrez over Havertz now and can still move to Son 1M ITB
C Start with Son 0.5M ITB

    Any thoughts really welcome, thanks

I think B. Chelsea fixtures not favorable right away so I think you can wait on their assets. Personally not keen on Son or Spurs anytime soon.

Cheers, the only reason I might go Havertz is it gives me a look at MC. If Grealish or Gundo look good I could go for them.
        Cheers for thoughts

Yeah that is fair. I was thinking Grealish but think he might see bench a bit once KDB gets up to fitness. Feel like Grealish will be valuable later on.

I do think as fixtures turn, Havertz could be outstanding.

Thanks, might just have some fun with spot. Havertz now and then straight onto the best looking MC mid or straight to Son if looks good GW1

If your plan is to get Son in down the line, I'd just save yourself a transfer and start with him. Personally not a fan of one/two week punts unless they are immediately before a wildcard.

Thanks, the main reason for waiting is to have a look at Man City GW1, if Gundo or Grealsih looks on would like to go to them and have some cash to spend!

That's fair, although I wouldn't expect to learn much more in GW1 that you don't already know. Good luck whatever you decide 🙂

Feel like i cant go without those 3 in midfield but am I compromising too much? I kinda like it apart from being forced into 4 at the back...

    Sanchez
    Trent - Shaw - Veltman - Tsimi
    Salah - Son - Bruno
    Ings - Toney - Antonio

    (Amartey, Brownhill, Murphy)

        A Greenwood
        B Raphinha
        C Barnes
D Son and move to 3-5-2 but don’t like any 4.5 m and actually don’t think there will be any other than the injured Davis

    Plenty of Lukaku chat.

As a reminder Salah and Lukaku rotate very well as (c) options for the first 11 games.

Only fly in the ointment is that they play each other in GW3... but I see no reason why that wouldn’t have a few goals in it.

    The template is forming

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Tsimi
    Salah Bruno
    Ings Antonio

    Defence - choose 1 of 4+4, 4.5+4, 4.5+4.5, 5+4. I dont recommend the first one.
Upfront - Son, Mahrez, Greenwood (Jota), Gundog, Barnes, Toney, Raph, Benrah. Rank them and pick the 3 that you can afford.
Caveat - If you want Son or Mahrez they are more pricey so you might have to go 4 at the back - and your defence should recognise that.
