Set Piece Takers

Which FPL players were on set-piece taking duties and penalties in Gameweek 1?

Our Set Piece Takers tab details the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players responsible for corners, free-kicks and penalties at their respective clubs.

The table had its first refresh of the 2021/22 season following the completion of Gameweek 1, with the headline news in the article below.

PENALTIES

Which FPL players were on set-piece taking duties and penalties in Gameweek 1?

There were just two penalties awarded on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, with Aston Villa and West Ham United handed the chance to score from 12 yards in their respective games.

The situation remains a tad unclear at both clubs.

Danny Ings (£8.0m) stepped up to take Villa’s effort late on in the 3-2 defeat to Watford but Anwar El Ghazi (£6.0m), who established himself as the Villans’ first choice in 2020/21, has already been substituted.

Mark Noble (£4.5m) has been first in line for West Ham for some time but pitch-time is increasingly scarce for the veteran midfielder, so whoever is the deputy for David Moyes’s side is crucial.

Declan Rice (£5.0m) and loanee Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) had both taken two spot-kicks in Noble’s absence last season but it was Michail Antonio (£7.5m), with Rice on the pitch, who took charge when the Hammers were awarded a penalty at Newcastle United on Sunday; his miss further clouding the picture.

DIRECT FREE-KICKS

Above: A Custom Stats table taken from the Premium Members Area

Many of the usual suspects are present above, having been high up the pecking order for free-kicks last season.

Villa summer signiing Leon Bailey (£6.5m) is a name to note, however, having taken his side’s only direct free-kick on Saturday.

A lot of the familiar dead-ball specialists were again on corner-taking duties in Gameweek 1, with Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Son Heung-min (£10.0m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Luke Shaw (£5.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£6.5m), Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Mason Mount (£7.5m), Ashley Westwood (£5.5m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.5m) all present in the above table.

Lucas Digne (£5.5m) seems to have more of a stronghold at Everton, meanwhile, with Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.0m) and James Rodriguez (£7.0m) out of the picture on Saturday and their futures uncertain.

On budget asset watch, Kostas Tsimikas (£4.0m), in for the injured Andrew Robertson (£7.0m), took seven of Liverpool’s 11 corner-kicks on Saturday evening.

Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) delivered two of Norwich’s three corners, while Jairo Riedewald (£5.0m) also carried on where he left off in pre-season and was at the front of the queue for Crystal Palace – although Eberechi Eze (£6.0m) and Luka Milivojevic (£5.5m) were sidelined.

Matt Ritchie (£5.0m), newly classified as an FPL defender, was again first in line for Newcastle United, while Luke Thomas (£4.5m) shared responsibility with Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) at Leicester as James Maddison (£7.0m) was again overlooked.

Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) was straight into the thick of the action for Villa, meanwhile, taking three of their four corners.

In the absence of Mathias Jensen (£5.0m), Brentford’s primary taker of set pieces in 2020/21, Sergi Canos (£5.5m) was handed corner-taking duties for the Bees at home to Arsenal.

Roll the FT or bring in a City player to replace Pepe, have 1.5m ITB:

    Current XI:

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Shaw Cash Tsimikas
    Salah Son Greenwood
    Ings Antonio Wilson

    (Steele, Ayling, Pepe, Brownhill)

Get rid of Pepe. I'd probably get Benrahma over a City mid tbh.

Its a wait and see for me, I don't think he's nailed as OLE has shown and he only really gets good returns when playing CAM which he drifted into but that's because of Leeds unique openness

I'd agree it's a bit rash but I'd argue it's probably one of the better knee jerks I've seen.

Great fixtures, great value, pretty decent point potential. There's really not much to dislike other than the prospect of him playing deeper, which I don't think will effect his output too much. He won't be getting double digits every week, but will he return every 2-3 games in the next period? Yeah, probably.

Not that I’m getting him as I’m not using a FT and have 5 mids I’m happy with but Pogba has proven over the years that when he is happy and on form he can be quite streaky and get back to back matches with goals/assists.

And they are playing against a team against which they scored 11 in 2 games last season and which has gotten weaker this season.

I'm not getting him myself but he's shown in the past he's capable of scoring spurts, do remember when him & Mkhi had a storming start a few years ago? Of course he's just as likely to score nothing in the next five games tho.

Not the worst knee-jerk I've ever seen. That would probably have been people taking hits to get in Granit Xhaka a few years ago because he got 2 assists from corners in GW1.

Pogba is a confidence and streaky player. His fixtures couldn't be better. He has class players around him to assist. His returns in FPL are sporadic at best in general, but when he does return he tends to do so in short, quite explosive spurts.

Bagged my first 100+ for the season in the first GW. Last season I struggled to get one til around GW28-30.

Hoping I can keep the momentum and be near top 10k come the end of the season. Trying to gather all the experience from the previous years and make more right decisions that wrong ones. Last season with covid issue was the most difficult I had for a very long time. Really struggled to get any momentum for almost 4/5 months til the last 2 months when I went from 2M to around 400k mark. GL to all who read this.

Had a pretty decent first GW and ended up with 105 points. Can't complain! I'm now looking at taking out Mahrez and bringing in one of the following over the next couple of weeks:

        A) Son
        B) Lukaku

What's everyone's thoughts? Son would be an easier transfer as it should be a straightforward swap. But I can move some players around to get Lukaku in too. I can't afford both at the moment

Nope. I have already downgraded Deeney to Dennis, and I plan on replacing Rudiger with Christensen next week. Which should give me enough funds for both options. Just trying to plan ahead

He took a knock, I believe that's why he came off early. Deeney was fully fit and only got 11 mins. The extra 0.5 will help make a transfer in the next few weeks, and I didn't want to lose any value in Deeney either

applaud the risk taking, if a player is subbed off with a knock i'd want some info before moving in on him.I hope it works out as a starting 5.0 striker makes things interesting

I looked at Dennis pre-season and wasnt sure on his goal scoring history and pedigree and he's still a wait and see for me. Sarr looked the better option

        Sanchez - Foster
TAA, Tsimikas, Coufal - Veltman, White
Salah (c), Fernandes (v), Raphina, Barnes - Brownhill
        Ings, Antonio, Toney

Already missed the Pogba price rise so think I'm going to hold the transfer assuming White / Veltman / Raphina / Barnes don't get too close to the drop but not sure who to swap to if I did wobble... in defence none of Alonso, any Brentford defenders, Amartey or any of his Leicester colleagues, Duffy, Ayling, Livramento or any Man City defender is shouting "must have" at the moment, for a variety of reasons; while in Midfield the only ones interesting me that I could maybe swap to are Canos or Greenwood... Jota, Benrahma and Sarr not sold on.

I've not included any Spurs players in the above, I'm a Spurs fan, and while I'm absolutely delighted with the result yesterday it has got to be noted that we have a qualifier for the Conference League on Thursday, away in Portugal. And while I'd usually say you'd expect us to roll out a heavily rotated team you could argue the team that played yesterday was fairly rotated, and Nuno may want to get the job done in the first leg. Either way we're the only team having to deal with an extra midweek game this week so will have limited time to prepare for Wolves (also away). For those reasons, plus the team being fairly unsettled, I would be very cautious about adding any Spurs players to your teams.

I appreciate there's already been a few Gundogan posts this morning and firstly, if he's cleared, I'll certainly hold albeit with the intention to move on at some point (KDB effect).

But if he's out, I have the 0.5. Is Grealish or Greenwood the better option?

Have the two well owned united picks and obviously Gundo was for Norwich especially. Close one in my head.

Greenwood + 0.5ITB the better option for now. Grealish may not get as much of the ball when KDB is back

They only conceded from a free kick on sat (basically a clean sheet), Leeds no cleanie but assist possibilities, then brighton, burnley, villa, Norwich (i think 4 weakest offences)

        Sanchez

        Bruno Salah Havertz Jota

        (Foster, Manquillo, Obafemi, Gilmour)

        Havertz+Manquillo > Grealish+4.5def for a -4?

Any suggestions.. not sure if Grnwood/Pogba is chasing points.. feel like getting on the city train could be important... (and no city is usually my downfall in this game) hoping that grealish being 100mill means he may be slightly rotation proof.

No to Pogba, I would rather take Greenwood. Your bench is not strong enough to get a City player, but i wouldn't take a hit for it.

Perhaps a strange move but Mount seems the most nailed among all the Chelsea mids and you save some money.
Benrahma at home should yield something as well given his current form.
And maybe, just maybe Buendia vs Newcastle if you are feeling adventurous......

i'd want to see a few more games, you cant read too much into playing city as your penned in a lot of the time reliant on counters. In games where spurs keep possession higher up the pitch, Dele should improve

Did anyone watch the Wolves vs Leicester game? Just looking at the stats which seemed to work in Wolves favor, didn't give up too many chances and got 13 shots off in the box. Who could emerge as an wolves FPL option, especially with their GW7 fixture swing in mind?

West Ham have been pretty poor defensively since the end of last season and conceded 2 to a team with 3 shots on target and that had no Willock. Leicester and West Ham games have had loads of goals in them in recent years and Rodgers himself said Barnes is still working himself to full fitness after a long layoff. Give him a chance, especially with Norwich in GW3

yes you both made good points about west ham having bad defence but something else i am worried about is him not starting. daka and iheanacho can easily be put in instead of him

It's possible but look at how good an end to last season Iheanacho had and still he was benched for the community shield and GW1 and Rodgers altered their formation to fit in Barnes. He will get rotated at times I'm sure but Rodgers rates him very highly, Daka I think is more of an issue for Iheanacho and Vardy, he'll be Vardy's replacement, even if he decides to play two of those 3 together in one game he will likely still fit Barnes in by playing one of them deeper / as a no. 10 to accommodate Barnes on the wing as he did in preseason.
