ASTON VILLA 1-4 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goals: Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) | Ben Johnson (£3.9m), Declan Rice (£5.0m), Pablo Fornals (£6.0m), Jarrod Bowen (£6.3m)
  • Assists: Emiliano Buendia (£6.3m) | Rice, Said Benrahma (£6.5m), Bowen, Manuel Lanzini (£5.8m)
  • Red cards: Ezri Konsa (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: Rice x3, Bowen x2, Watkins x1

IN-FORM WEST HAM

West Ham moved up to fourth in the Premier League table on Sunday, as they comfortably beat 10-man Aston Villa 4-1.

As a result, they have maintained their unbeaten away record in 2021/22, while their impressive form throughout the year is captured on this annual Premier League table, via Transfermarkt:

Antonio blanks and Bowen impresses: FPL notes from West Ham’s win 2

The Hammers’ now host Liverpool in Gameweek 11, knowing a win would take them above the Reds in the table, before fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Manchester City (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) and Chelsea (h).

ANTONIO BLANKS

Despite scoring four goals at Villa Park, Michail Antonio (£8.2m) blanked for the third time in his last four matches.

However, he assisted the assister on a couple of occasions today and did register two goal attempts himself. Notably, his stats over the last four Gameweeks also suggest that he has perhaps been a little unfortunate not to return more.

Forwards ranked by non-penalty xG over the last four Gameweeks

BOWEN IMPRESSES AGAIN

In an excellent all-round display, Jarrow Bowen (£6.3m) produced a goal and assist, plus two bonus points, and posted match-leading totals for shots in the box, take-ons, crosses, final-third and penalty box touches.

After his first double-digit haul of the campaign, the 24-year-old has now returned either a goal or assist in five of his last six league appearances. During that time, amongst all midfielders in the game, only Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) has registered more shots in the box than Bowen.

Jarrod Bowen’s xG shot map Gameweeks 5-10

Bowen’s 11-point haul was trumped by Declan Rice (£5.0m), however, who notched a goal and assist to produce his third and fourth attacking returns of the season so far.

Meanwhile, budget defender Ben Johnson (£3.9m) made his third successive start, with Vladimir Coufal (£4.8m) interestingly benched, and repaid his manager’s faith with the opener. Said Benrahma (£6.5m) bagged a rather fortunate assist – his first attacking return since Gameweek 5 – while Pablo Fornals (£6.0m) and Manuel Lanzini (£5.8m) also supplied a goal and assist respectively.

ISSUES AT VILLA

As for Villa, they have now lost four consecutive Premier League matches, and conceded 12 goals during that run.

In an attempt to get back on track today, Dean Smith made four changes to his line-up, which included dropping captain Tyrone Mings (£5.0m) to the bench, while Douglas Luiz (£4.6m) and Danny Ings (£7.8m) were both missing from the matchday squad.

“We had to shuffle the pack a little bit. We’ve had some forced pull-outs as well, I won’t go into specifics but a few soft-tissue injuries and a couple of Covid related issues. We’ve had to adjust it somewhat” – Dean Smith

However, a switch to a back-four system failed to have the desired effect, despite Emiliano Buendia (£6.3m) bagging his first Villa assist and Ollie Watkins (£7.3m) registering his third attacking return in his last four appearances.

Elsewhere, Villa will be without the suspended Ezri Konsa (£4.9m) in Gameweek 11 after his red card, while John McGinn (5.8m) picked up his fourth booking of the campaign, and is now just one further yellow card away from a ban.

Jacob Ramsey’s (£4.5m) return to the starting XI unfortunately lasted only 15 minutes, too, after he rolled his ankle. The 20-year-old was replaced by Ashley Young (£4.8m) and is surely now a doubt for Friday’s trip to Southampton.

“I’m concerned when we lose any game, so yes – concerned that we’ve lost four games in a row. But I have a great belief in the quality we have that we’ll turn it around.

Sometimes this happens, and things go against you. We’ve had a couple of shots which probably register 0.03 on xG that end up in the bottom corner, and a young kid gets injured after a few minutes, and a poor red card which is incorrect.” – Dean Smith

Aston Villa XI: Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Hause, Targett, Nakamba, McGinn, J Ramsey (Young 15), Buendia (Mings 52), Bailey (El Ghazi 72), Watkins

West Ham XI: Fabianski, Johnson, Zouma, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Soucek, Rice, Bowen (Vlasic 90+1), Fornals (Coufal 90+1), Benrahma (Lanzini 64), Antonio

Bottomed.....am thinking to do B before the price change deadline as I have exact funds to do this.

    Ramsdale, Foster
    TAA, Laporte, Cancelo, Livramento, Duffy
    Salah, Foden, Havertz, Raphinha, Luiz
    Vardy, Antonio, Armstrong

    2 FT, 0.4itb

    Should I:

    A - Toney & Chilwell for Vardy & Duffy

    B - Chilwell for Laporte

Rolled the transfer last week with the plan to do A but now swaying towards B and having 2 FTs available after the international break.

    Thoughts?

      I'd do B because:
      1. Keep Vardy another GW
      2. Cancelo & Dias better Man City defensive options, in that order.

      Just a reminder guys:
Remember why you look at price changes. Do you need a player? Do you need to be rid of a player? Are you chasing value? A free transfer is still 4 points in value in the bigger scheme of things. Don't chase just for effective ownership changes. Make a transfer with long term plans. A transfer halves in cost when he is eyed for captaincy. Look at your real value; you might have a spare .1 that allows you to wait. Think of who you are selling (the cost of getting him back). Team value does not win anything but it certainly both helps and hinders.

        "Just a reminder..."

If you write something like that it should at least be right. What you have written isn't right. Specifically the idea that "a transfer halves in cost when he is eyed for captaincy". That's nonsense.

Plenty took a hit to get Havertz last week and then captained him over Salah. Arguably that transfer cost them more than 4 points, didn't it? And that can apply to any transfer; the profit/loss depends on how well the players removed and added actually do.

        1. Eze Really?

Get off your high horse Ruth. I am not talking about ifs buts and maybes. What you say is right but you take my comment out of context. Of course it can cost more. I am talking about a minimum outcome on a 4 point transfer. "Halves in cost" is a reasonable anecdote. spend more time looking at with the context it was written with, not the Caveats you are portraying. If it cost a double hit it is bloody obvious it costs more. In actual fact, the alter side of things are the net result and the Havertz captaincy over Salah cost far more in points achieved.
I respect many of your viewpoints but sometimes you just criticize for the sale of it.

I decided to sell Dias to get Trent. One is losing .1 and the other one is rising .1. It's a solid long term move and if something goes wrong, my current bench for this week is Foster, Cancelo, Livra and Antonio. So besides having exact money, I had absolutely zero need to wait with that transfer. If Trent gets long term injury my bench can cover it and I can ditch him one week later. Yes, I would like to have more points and smaller tv, but I can't just use money to buy me points now. Good tv may be needed later if premiums start firing, so I believe that paying attention to team value is a solid strategy.

Like you, if I have a bench i am not too worried about an early TFR. A question of balance I suppose. TV is important but I always look at the trends and if I have a .1 ITB. I just did a Vardy to Watkins and Tierney to Chilwell; a little for the the rise/drop but a -4 I take now to get Son next week, either way it would cost me -4.

        Good question!
I’m too afraid to bench ESR atm after benching him for his 13 point haul and luckily getting his 9 points off the bench this GW. I guess it would have to be Firmino or Raph but if I get Toney in for Firmino then I guess Raph would have to be the fall guy. Dunno dude

If you're confident he'll start could be a nice differential.

Midweek Euro game. I´ll wait. Injuries and all that

    Ramsdale
    TAA | Cancelo | James | Duffy
    Salah | Raphinha | Mbeumo
    Ronaldo | Vardy | Jiménez

    Steele | Livramento | Allan | Brownhill

    0FTs. 0.8 ITB.
51 points, Jimenez, Gray & Allan (deputising for Mbeumo to come). 49k rank.

Transfers made: B Williams & Gray to R James & Brownhill

2 weeks ago I cited my interest in Reece James as Chelsea would use the more attacking fullback in these upcoming favourable fixtures.
Unfortunately, Lukaku got injured and then last week I decided I would wait to do the above transfers for free rather than take a hit :/

Ronaldo haul this week also makes the team look that bit better, overall thoughts?

Seems like you’re cruising at the moment. At this stage you could hold onto Ron until the fixtures turned off you wanted to.
Having to play Livra or Duffy at the moment isn’t the worst at all.

Yes the plan is to hold Ronaldo, definitely.
And yes, three premium defence, I probably prefer as it allows fielding one of Livramento/Duffy.

Okie. Think I’m set but I have a ft to play with.

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo, Azpi, Chillwell
    Salah, Jota, Raphinha, Havertz
    Vardy, Antonio, Jimenez
    (Foster, Duffy, Livramento, Brownhill)

    1ft, 1.4itb

    I’d love to move Vardy & Jota > Toney & Mané (-4)
Might be something to shoot me up the ranks.

As a footballer? Interesting. I’m biased (WH fan) but do think he’s perfect for us as one of the runners off Antonio. Havertz in that role seems less good - and Havertz as a 9/false 9 may also be worse.

It was interesting with the Liverpool rumors ahead of the season. He seems the one that would get poached by bigger clubs (though Chelsea could have paid half the price for Antonio compared to Lukaku probably)

Yes as a footballer, I think Bowen is a underrated player and I could easily seen him playing for a team like Chelsea instead of Havertz.

Dean Smith should shut his fat gob. Should have been two red cards. Really hope Villa go down. Refs need to man up and start calling stuff.

I was quite confused about Villa red-complaining.

Thought it was a stone-wall penalty in the first half when Zouma was pulled back. Could have easily been 2 reds at once too.
WH were by far the better team

First hit of the season went for Semedo + Sarr to ESR + Chilwell, both before price rises. Hope that will work, what do you think?

If Nuno does get sacked, do you think Kane and/or Son will be more interesting to own or the whole team stinks and it's not Nuno's fault.
Maybe they should look at Chelsea system and start playing Doherty wing back to try something new...

    Ps Kane owner right here

12+ too much for that gamble. Easier to buy him omce the form is back.

Exactly. Not many forwards standing out at the moment. Kane is a great differential and easy swap for Ronaldo in 3-4gws time for united great run of fixtures come gw15

that was my thinking when i got him in for lukaku. have more pressing issues to remove and of course no obvious moves atm (not wanting ronaldo)

I can imagine if they all really don’t like Nuno (or his style of play or whatever) that a change could really bring about significant improvement.

But I’ll wait to see it. Too pricey for the gamble for me.

Who do you think scores more over next 6 gws?

    A) Toney: NOR new EVE tot lee WAT

    B) Antonio: LIV wol mci BHA CHE bur

Tough. Toney 3 returns - Antonio 3 returns.

WH are just a better attacking team in general - and they counter attack is set up well against better teams too. Think they’ll be hard to keep out even against the better defenses.
Think it’ll make up for Brentfords awesome fixtures.

i trust antonio more and liv city fixtures might still be ok for him

Leaning towards this move as well, other strikers are Antonio and SIUU. Plan was to remove Ronaldo but I'll keep him for now and go for Kane or Son after the IB
