Scoutcast: How to tackle the Covid chaos in FPL

Joe and Seb help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers prepare for a decimated Gameweek 18.

The Covid pandemic has wreaked havoc with the Premier League schedule already in Gameweek 17, with six teams missing out due to the spread of the infection.

Gameweek 18 looks similarly chaotic, with half the matches postponed. At the time of writing it is still unclear whether any of the weekend’s fixtures will take place.

Amid the confusion, Joe and Seb try to make sense of it all and offer their top tips for tackling Covid chaos in FPL.

They reveal their plans based on every eventuality, from a limited Gameweek 18 to a circuit breaker for a few weeks.

For Joe, goalkeepers and a better midfield look to be his top priorities, while a freshly Wildcarded Seb ponders his options.

Manchester City’s assets already featured on the Christmas shopping lists of many FPL managers. Their 7-0 thrashing of Leeds in Gameweek 17 ensured they became a top priority.

Armed with a plethora of heatmaps and statistics, Seb offers an extensive guide to the best options to consider and the influence that a returning Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) may have on Pep Guardiola’s side for their next matches.

Goals imminent, worst defences and best expected statistics stars are also covered, as is the progress of the show’s community team. There’s also a frisk of the next four fixtures, whenever they may be scheduled.

Due to the tight turnaround of games, and a family trip to the cinema to see the new Spiderman film for Joe, this week’s show took place late afternoon on Thursday 16 December. This sadly counted Andy out of proceedings due to work commitments.

If tomorrow's games go ahead I'm simply doing Gally > ESR so I can put out a full starting XI. Lots of people saying Saka and Martinelli might be better options but Martinelli is too injury prone for me and Saka is such an inconsistent fake. Always gets hyped up and never actually performs season after season. Feck that. ESR apparently overperforming stats-wise but Vardy was always a stat buster, ESR could be tool. He's been consistently good and it's clear he only does well against smaller sides so it's quite an easy benching decision if he comes up against Citeh, Liv, etc. No need to overthink it.

There you go. If anyone else has the same dilemma I hope this helps.

Saka looked sensational to me the other night, but yeah ESR for goals might be the right call

He's done this before in previous seasons then disappeared. He has one sensational game then four anonymous ones. ESR might just be going through a purple patch but at least over the course of this season he has shown more promise of being consistently good than Saka has in his entire career.

Similar dilemma, but could you risk -4 on ESR as you cannot be 100% sure he starts?! They’ve won back to back games with him not starting...

I don't need to take a -4 because I've got 10 starters already. So I suppose that makes it easier for me.

And ultimately Saka has always annoyed me as a player. I'm not going there. Maybe that's illogical but I'm having a good season so I'm just going to do what feels right to me at this moment. If I pick ESR and he flops I'll be able to live with that decision. If I get Saka and he flops I'm going to throw my dog out of the window and I love that dog so I don't want to risk it.

Here's my plan for 11.15am tomorrow:

Bowen, Maddison, Pukki > Watkins, Raphinha, Odegaard (all Saturday players) for a -8

I have exact funds, so hoping for no price changes tonight.

Don't want to risk a hit on Sunday players like Foden or KDB

It just depends on how many games are on this weekend.
I think only a small percentage of teams would use FH before having their second wildcard available so the chip power would be much stronger later on when not only are there blank gw but doubles to offset it. That’s my 2 cents

The more I think about it, the more a WC might make sense for me.

    Foster, guita
    Livramento
    Maddison, gallagher
    Vardy, antonio, king

...definitely no game. I'd only keep gallagher on WC. Plus I have Brownhill.

    1. ZTF

Because people are just unaware of them. I very nearly signed Cash a couple of weeks ago, ironically he took a CS and is now one of the only in the league with a game

    2. rh6462

It's just two more games for anyone who's played 19, no? So Cash has 4/17 so far, not unreasonable to sign a defender with more penalty-box touches than nearly any defender in a now-solid team and taking a chance on that risk?

7 starters here (if Bernardo starts- otherwise 6).
    1ft, 0.7m ITB.
What would be your move(s)? Thinking maybe a -4. Not very keen on removing the United guys but selling Ronaldo would free up nice funds.
Some options- DDG-> Ramsdale, Diop/Dalot-> Tierney.
    Bowen/Bernardo-> Foden. Ronaldo -> Watkins

    Starters this week-
    TAA, James, Cancelo.
    Ramsey, Jota, Bernardo, Salah.

    Non starters so far-
    Bachmann, DDG,
    Dalot, Diop,
    Bowen,
    Dennis, King, Ronaldo.

Will wait until deadline but which sounds better:

    A) Antonio => Watkins
    B) Ronaldo + Antonio + Brownhill => Watkins + Gelhardt + KDB (-4)

    Starting:
    Ramsdale
    James TAA Cancelo Reguilon
    Salah Jota Foden ESR Brownhill

    No match:
    Ronaldo Antonio King Lamptey

A gets me 11 with games and 2 FT next week
B is a hit for 12 players and with the upside of KDB. Could also do Broja instead of Gelhardt for longer-term planning.

Just brought in Gallagher last week. Worth selling him for a -4 (for Foden) given the circumstances?

Need to do this tonight because Watkins is going to rise:
Bowen, Pukki > Watkins, Odegaard (all Saturday players) for a -4
Maddison > Raphinha for another -4 nearer deadline.

Leaves me 0.0itb and Ronaldo on the bench.

if you've got the main players then it's fine. FT worth more than a couple of points or a 0.1 price drop etc. atm. No point in selling a player you might want back in in next couple of GWs
