Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 19?

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) captaincy debate for Gameweek 19 has been completely turned on its head by the postponement of Liverpool v Leeds United.

As a result, Manchester United and Manchester City assets have been thrust into the spotlight, but there are other options on the radar too, including Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min (£10.3m) and Harry Kane (£12.1m).

First, we will assess the fallout of the Gameweek 19 captain poll, before then analysing the best options, Rate My Team (RMT) and the Premier Fantasy Tools ratings ahead of Sunday’s 13:30 GMT deadline.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

For the first time since Gameweek 7, Mohamed Salah (£13.1m) isn’t top of the captain poll, having seen his Anfield clash against Leeds United called off due to a coronavirus outbreak in the visitors’ squad. Up until that point, the Egyptian had unsurprisingly been out in front with just over 71% of total votes.

Now, with the poll reset shortly after news broke, we have a new leader in Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), who has accumulated 33.22% of votes from our users at the time of writing.

Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) currently sits in second place, backed by 21.62% of users ahead of his Etihad encounter against Leicester City.

Son Heung-min occupies third place with 17.18%, followed by Phil Foden (£8.1m) and Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m), with 6.36% and 4.62% respectively.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Manchester United have seen their last two Premier League games against Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion postponed, due to a spate of coronavirus cases among players and staff. However, Cristiano Ronaldo has since led his team-mates back into training after their Carrington base re-opened, with manager Ralf Rangnick declaring “they are all in good shape” in Thursday’s pre-match press conference.

Due to those Covid-related match postponements, we have only seen the German tactician in the dugout three times, though the Red Devils have won both of their Premier League matches against Crystal Palace and Norwich City. During that time, Ronaldo has failed to score from open play, but his underlying numbers are more encouraging, having racked up 1.09 non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG).

Cristiano Ronaldo’s xG shot map under Ralf Rangnick

However, the real appeal lies in Monday’s opponents, Newcastle United. The Magpies’ 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in Gameweek 18 leaves them second-bottom of the table, with just one win and 10 points from 18 games, primarily because of their defence. Eddie Howe’s side have now conceded 41 goals in 2021/22, at an average of 2.3 per game, and a whopping 79 for the calendar year. It’s also worth noting that Ronaldo has scored seven goals in his last four league appearances against Newcastle, including a brace on his return to Man Utd in the reverse fixture earlier this season.

It depends on your DGW22 chip choice

FH or BB? I'm now leaning towards BB

You can plan GWs 19 through to 24 (Salah's return) on https://livefpl.net/myteam, and then have the 2nd WC and your FHs as escape routes from that plan if/when Covid slams into it

Risky to BB in GW22 as games might still be getting postponed.

                In January in China.

A study of about 80,000 people in northwestern England found that those with vitamin D levels under 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) had about 2.4 times the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19 than those with normal vitamin D levels. A retrospective study in Italy of 103 patients hospitalized for severe COVID-19 found that vitamin D levels were inversely correlated with the inflammatory marker interleukin-6, as well as severe disease and death

Il-6 FWIW is the main cytokine for brain inflammation

It probably why Covid outbreaks only happen once (as you are 13 x more immune to covid if you have had it for 6 months than the vaccine), or on the international break as players go out of their bubble in the latter, so it is really winter dependant, but then if most teams have had the outbreak, I would expect less outbreaks as it is very unlikely to happen twice from the same varient.

If that's any help to your planning 🙂

I've done Dennis to Broja because Dennis might not play again until GW25, while West Ham and Southampton have already said they don't have significant Covid cases (yet)

Leaving everything else, including activating the FH chip, until 30 minutes to the deadline. There's always someone to downgrade on your bench if you're priced out of someone else on a Free Hit

Makes no difference to your original team that comes back, Their prices will come back with whatever has happened to them before the deadline.

Doing FH now may give you more money to work with if those players you bring in increase in price after you put them in your FH team.

He has looked better that is true. Is Palace a good game for him though? I’d feel more confident if it were Watford or Newcastle. Feels too punty for me at the moment.

As a Guaita owner, Palace have been letting goals in but agree they’re no pushovers and personally I prefer Ronaldo v Newcastle and hold off on Kane until he turns this upturn into goals

Yup. Kane will come good again soon but not sure if this is the game. Ronaldo should haul against Newcastle as he has had a nice rest and will be itching to score goals again.

I'm even somewhat reluctant with Son

Palace is horrible at set pieces, but good at almost all other versions of defending

It isn't set up to be a 4G+ rout, imo

I'll still get Son, but I have better uses for 12m funds than Kane on a FH (KDB vs Leicester, for example). Maybe if they were facing Newcastle or Leicester, I'd have been more inclined

Yes we are thinking the same here. I see KDB as the better option to put all that cash towards, against a non-existent Leicester defence. I’m also debating Foden just in case he starts.

      Nostalgia.

Though his chances vs Liverpool (no VVD) were crazy.

Got booked and still got a bonus point too!

From a pure eye test based on one game he looks good but spurs have never done well against a low block which is what palace will adopt,

Only hope is that Viera sets them up for an open game.

IMO son is a better shout with set pieces

Good time to encourage people to play their own game.

Obviously keep the DGWs in mind but the amount of people suggesting there is one specific way to play this chaos is crazy.

I have 6 players that will not play this GW and it makes total sense to free hit even before more games look likely to be shelved.

Chaos is a ladder but play your own way!

I’ll play the free hit late but quite excited at the prospect of getting the like of KDB and Wood (yes Wood!) for a 1 gameweek punt. This game should be fun!

Get ronaldo and son to cover off everyone else (likely to be most captained) and punt on KDB for example

The thing I find most bizarre is how the template move out of nowhere is to get rid of Salah before Leicester (and even after that is a game against a Chelsea side that have not looked good with or without Kante for a while). Maybe I'm biased as I made a plan to be able to afford someone like KDB if I felt it was necessary and I can move Bernardo to Son next week but it seems like such a reactionary move (which I'm not surprised by in itself, but the fact so many are doing it is amazing to me).

That was the case for me last week - I had spent my transfers on Watkins so was left with just 6 players - one playing against city - and no free transfers. Plus I didn't really want Watkins that much. So I free hitted. It worked for me, but others were set up much better to deal with the blank.

    Potential FH team;

    Ramsdale
    Cancelo James Reguilon Tierney
    Son Rashford Bowen Martnelli
    Kane Ronaldo (c)

    Sanchez Broja Ramsey Livramento

    Thoughts?
    Cheers.

Rashford is an interesting choice. I have no confidence in him at the moment but you never know against Newcastle.

Don’t get ramsdale or ronaldo given what their ownership will be.

I like the rashford and Martinelli punts

It’s an iffy 10 with doubts over ESR & Antonio starting plus likely blanks for Luiz & Livra.

Think a FH could bear fruit here

    Can get these 11 with a -4.
ESR and Foden are the worry.
Can I get away with it?

Best FH team for GW 19:
    A. Mahrez - Trossard - Kane
    B. Mahrez - Mount - Lacazette
    C. KdB - Mount - Maupay

Morning DZ. considering something drastic like this. Let's me put out 11 this week (assuming no more cancellations) and starts to set me nicely for the doubles in 22. Thoughts?

Salah, lacazette, king, alonso -> Ronaldo, son, broja, Davies (-12)

But all the moves will improve my squad for the next 3-4 GWs so I think they'll likely pay off over 4 weeks

Another plus of FH for me this week is that you should have a better idea who needs to be dealt with when the non FH team comes back in just 2 days. The rotation for City might be just a little easier to spot

Punting on the in form Mahrez and Bilva with Cancelo. Think Pep eases the naughty boys in off bench.

Yeah I’ve got Mahrez & Foden but will have a decent 1st sub to cover.
If both start it could be a mega haul

For one game only, would you rather have Lamptey (bre), Davies (CPL) or Dalot (new) (with no bench backup)?

      Davies

That bracket swings the answer to Davies

Lamptey's tempting, but I think I expect Brentford to find a way to score
