Southampton v Newcastle postponed as second Gameweek 21 fixture falls

Southampton v Newcastle United has become the second Gameweek 21 fixture to be postponed.

The game has been called off due to a lack of numbers in the Magpies’ squad and follows the earlier announcement that Leicester City v Norwich City wouldn’t go ahead on New Year’s Day.

A Premier League statement said:

“Southampton FC’s match against Newcastle United at St Mary’s Stadium, due to be played at 2pm on Sunday 2 January, has regrettably been postponed.

“Newcastle United continue to have ongoing COVID-19 cases and injuries that led to their match against Everton FC being called off earlier this week. The Board accepted the postponement application as the club does not have the required number of players available for the match (13 outfield players and one goalkeeper).

“The Board was able to make its decision in advance of the fixture to give clarity to the affected clubs and their fans. We apologise for the inconvenience and disruption caused to supporters’ festive plans.”

Injury news for tomorrow: "In terms of availability for tomorrow, we're in a fairly good place. Who knows what today brings in terms of the PCR process so we'll take that every day as it comes. Other than that we're in a good place and there is competition for places. One or two players are stepping in and making a case to stay in the team."

On Conor Gallagher absence: "It's still one where we're unsure of and we're tackling on a day to day basis. The rest of the group will see what today brings and hopefully we'll have clarity later on this evening."

The rule should strictly be Covid cases.
and x3 should not be enough to get a game postponed. Southampton are furious and rightfully so.

Spot-on, takes away injuries, suspensions & size of squad factors in getting a game postponed.
            Not difficult is it.

Premier League rules stipulate if a club cannot field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper from its squad list or its ‘appropriately experienced’ under-21 players due to COVID-19 infections, isolation and other injuries and illnesses, the match will be postponed.

        Are you serious?

If Nigeria win and Dennis wanted to go, but Watford stopped him, then Dennis always going to wonder if he could have won AFCON.

Would be funnier if Watford got relegated. Dennis held back by Watford in order to play for a relegated team and misses out on winning AFCON.

One match. Maybe 2011/12? It was when I first started playing. Big freeze and snow at Xmas. All games off except MNF which was MCI 0-1 EVE (T. Cahill). Strange times as there was no VC pick in those days. If your C didn't play the VC went to the next highest scoring player so anyone who had Cahill pulled in the points. As the majority didn't, flaming torches were lit and FPL Towers was marched upon. I think they changed the VC rule the following season. Back in the days when FPL Towers actually listened to their user base. Strange times indeed.

Something about Newcastle getting their game v Soton postponed doesn't sit well with me at all. Replay will be with ASM and Wilson back and January transfers... the decision today could likely be the difference between a Leeds or Burnley staying up or going down. Dodgy.

Premier League rules stipulate if a club cannot field 13 outfield players and a goalkeeper from its squad list or its ‘appropriately experienced’ under-21 players due to COVID-19 infections, isolation and other injuries and illnesses, the match will be postponed. …

Yes, that is the rule but it is completely incompetent on all levels.
No one is arguing that it doesn't comply with this. Because it does. The frustration is in reference to the ruling.

Callum Wilson (calf), Allan Saint-Maximin (calf), Ryan Fraser (hamstring), Federico Fernandez (calf), Jamal Lewis (hamstring), Paul Dummett (calf), Manquillo suspended, Hayden (knee), maybe Covid fit Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie, Karl Darlow and Joe Willock … that leaves just 10 senior outfield players, including under-23s midfielder Elliot Anderson

As I said below. Southampton fielded a 20 man matchday squad with 11 players that would qualify for this 13+1 ruling last season.
Had this number of '1'1 been lower the game still would've gone ahead; this is where the frustration lies.

Newcastle struggled to get a bench for Monday. Then they suffered 3, maybe 4 injuries during the match. Plus a player isn't allowed to play due to a suspension. We don't know if more players have tested positive since Monday, unless I've missed an announcement.

If the rules now say they can ask for the next game to be postponed given the number of players available then they are following the rules, just as others have other the Christmas period.

We can't have one rule for one and one for another, in the same season.

The rule is inadequate. As I have stated.
Although, I agree with a lot you have said.

The ruling is yes, the ruling that is what the PL decided. That doesn't mean it is not an absolutely sh*tshow of a decision.

If 3 or 4 covid cases pushes a team over the edge then so be it, it’s neither a good or bad rule but saying it should just be Covid is madness and ignores overall player welfare.

You say you don’t give a F but you have said the rule is completely incompetent on all levels, Newcastle can put a team put, the rule is inadequate, your opinion simply is that the rule should be strictly covid-cases, your whole argument is that injuries should have absolutely zero consequence on the postponement of games, you have an issue that clubs themselves stipulate the extent of the injury, their own club's doctors, that Southampton against Tottenham 'ALSO' had 3 Covid cases but played, that the rule in application may be the same for everyone,
but it does not have the same and equal bearing on every team, that that the ruling is wrong, that rule should strictly be Covid cases.
and x3 should not be enough to get a game postponed, that injuries are not covid cases it is an absolutely pathetic ruling from the PL, that Newcastle are getting away with it because they have deep pockets,

It's not any other time in history, it's this season and this season's rules. You seem aggrieved that your club had to do something last season that they wouldn't have had to do this season as the rules have changed. You have suggested that Newcastle are taking advantage of the rules somehow, but also admitted that they are following the rules.

In light of the PL's decision to postpone the game, yes I am to believe that they are following the rules correctly.
That doesn't mean, however, that the way the ruling as it has been set can not advantage clubs, it does.

My opinion simply is that the rule should be strictly covid-cases.
And should a team hit this number, whether this be 3, 4, 5 cases whatever then I am in favour.
Absolutely, this is an extremely important issue that needs to be monitored safely.

Schar also looked like he might of tweaked his hamstring on Monday late on. Plus we don't know if more players have tested positive. The bench on Monday included 3rd and 4th choice goalkeepers to make up the numbers.

If this had been a week and a half ago, no one would have said anything as other clubs were having to cancel matches.

      Tell me about it...
They got the game postponed, to my knowledge, with only 3 covid cases.

Southampton against Tottenham 'ALSO' had 3 Covid cases (Adams, Lyanco & Stephens). Tella a '4th' didn't play against West Ham and was an unused substitute against Spurs.

Southampton played a game last season with just 11 'senior players' in the matchday squad, below the 13+1 threshold.

      Irate.

Again and I respond to you very clearly.
The argument being made is not that the postponement does not align with the ruling it does. I agree with you.
So I'd suggest that you stop replying with the response "read the rules", we know the rules.

The point people are debating is that the ruling that the PL have chosen to employ is littered with insufficiencies.
Several clubs are saying the exact same thing to the PL.

there is no inconsistency - the rules are the same for everyone.

What is annoying me is that people are suggesting Newcastle are in some way doing something special or having special treatment, they are not .. it doesn’t stink

It’s simple, an out break of Covid with training facilities shut and a bunch of awaited covid results or a squad down to 13 or less due to a mixture of reasons

but it does not have the same and equal bearing on every team, this is the point that you again dismiss.

If covid and covid only shut a squad down to 13, then I absolutely agree. Whether the number they choose be 13 or whatever. As I will reiterate, the ruling to achieve the greatest amount of fairness should not include injuries / suspensions.

Thanks for explaining how a respiratory disease works, I had no idea. If only there had been some media coverage on the subject in the past few years...

Utterly irrelevant anyway - most players are missing because of injuries, not Covid, so they should have to dip into their development squad and academy as should all teams.

The issue is the EPL and their wishy washy 'rules' that are being exploited.

I was explaining that a game can be postponed for a mixture of injuries and Covid and not just Covid … you may not like it but that is the way it is.

Only players from the U23s that have already had first team football can be called up and if you look at the Newcastle U23s that is not many and those that are eligible have already been called up

I am not sure what your issue can be except you have lost players in a virtual online game that is really not the main concern for the welfare of human beings
