Celebrating female FPL content creators on International Women’s Day

As a young girl walking into a football stadium with my dad, I was conscious that I was not your average football fan. I regularly found myself sitting in the stands at both White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge as one of a real female minority.

Now as I sit in the stands with my six-year-old daughter, the difference in the numbers of male and female fans no longer feels as noticeable. She can buy a football shirt made specifically for female supporters and the stadium facilities cater for the growth of female attendees.

Spurs now boasts an average attendance of 8,614 at their women’s first-team matches, the most in the league; remarkable growth for a team that was founded the year I was born.

International Women’s Day is all about celebrating women’s achievements, increasing visibility and calling out inequality. Organisations such as Her Game Too have encouraged women to break out of their comfort zones and push for increased representation in the football world.

“I want people – boys and girls – to be sat at home watching me alongside the likes of Rio Ferdinand or Frank Lampard, thinking that it’s normal, that we all know what we’re talking about, and that they’re not judging me at home just because I’m a female.” – Alex Scott

Across the FPL community, female content creators have added a new dimension to the game. As the first female content creator on YouTube, FPL Nymfria paved the way for other women. In addition, Holly Shand’s creation of Fantasy Football Community gave the community a platform to celebrate their work.

Since, there have been a number of high-profile women in the game, including the likes of Jules Breach and Kelly Somers. Their work both in FPL as well as in the Premier League, European and international football alike, has encouraged others to follow their dreams and be active in the Fantasy and football arenas.

When Lee and I founded the FPL Family in 2017, I was anxious about the reaction that I would receive. In the early days of the FPL Family, we did have comments on my gender and the “I’m not listening to women who know nothing about football”-type lines. However, these comments were always dwarfed by the positives.

The encouragement of the team at Fantasy Football Scout has allowed me to have confidence in my own value as a content creator and to ride the quest of the wave as the FPL Family grew.

Over the course of the 2021/22 season so far we have seen the development of new female content creators, as well as increased activity from those that existed before. FPL Nymfria and Kylie FPL have a Weekly Watchlist stream on the FFScout YouTube channel and I love the Q&A streams I do with Az every week. On top of this, Linn is now part of the Scout Network and is doing great work, especially with FanTeam.

The Premier League, Official FPL and Fantasy Football Scout are great examples of how companies can improve their offerings by leveling the game. Last season, the Premier League worked alongside me to help me produce some video content on women in the game. I went to the Premier League with an idea to highlight the remarkable things that women were doing with FPL and they helped me to make it a reality.

We produced a video on the female personalities, which was published on the FPL website.

We also produced video content with some big female personalities in the FPL community. In addition, they gave me access to the rest of the recordings for a series of videos on the FPL Family YouTube channel.

Both my son and daughter are growing up seeing their mum and dad appearing on the FPL Show and the Official FPL Podcast. They are listening to Jules Breach on BT Sports Score on a Saturday afternoon and watching the likes of Kelly Cates, Kelly Somers and Alex Scott hosting football and working as pundits. As they get older and have access to social media, I hope that there will be equality for all creators and members of the community alike regardless of race, gender, creed, sexuality or age.

They are growing up in a world that strives to improve equality in the game and this is their normal. This is something that I am proud to be a part of.

I'm seeing some disgusting bench points this week.

Meanwhile I'm here with DDG, Tierney, Maddison and Bowen lol.

Why didnt you BB with 2 DGW players? I played BB with no DGW players and got 31

Just the 4 on the bench for me.

Bad luck for some but I would say it was inevitable with some of the WC’s being overly focused on 28. Benching Trent for instance always a big risk.

My attempt at planning onwards by keeping Bowen didn’t exactly go well with his injury either though!

Saka first on bench for me with Bamford waiting to dash my hopes with a 10-min run out. My own fault for taking a punt

Yeah I ended up very unsure of what to do once it got to Friday and I ended up going for him almost mainly for another BGW30 player and hoping he'd get 10-20 mins against Leicester and might manage 60 in midweek, highly regretting not listening to myself and moving Saiss to a Chelsea def but ah well

Yep wcd into a whopping 29 points, with Alison (dont ask), saka, White and martinelli. Screwed by that Wolves delightfully looking double. But not regretful, as i would done the same again, at least double def, Jimenez was in and out all friday, as i had the hunch he actually was dropped, but then i came to my "senses" again and put him in, ha ha.
You know when your highest hope for next game is that he starts, thats low.

For those BBing in 29, what’s swaying you to activate vs waiting til other dgw?

It must be the squad they have and potentially built with this gw in mind. If you built for 28 with one eye on 30 aswell then I honestly don’t think a 29 BB is worthwhile.

Feels hard to to have both. Easier if you recently wildcarded.

Thinking of replacing non playing backup to Dubravka and BB but would also need to do something like Bowen to Kulu and still have no Chelsea defence

I think it depends on whether you are holding a wildcard. I am vaguely entertaining the idea of a DDG, Watkins, Dennis, Davies(x2) BB but I probably won't - I think I will wait to see what DGWs are announced and wildcard into them.

Incidentally, I have touched on this but I think one of the influencer ideas which has wrongly gained far too much traction this season is the idea that bench boost is a waste of space or, somehow, even harmful. It can have great value, variance aside, and can be planned for without ruining your team. Even wildcarding to set up a BB is not a bad idea if you have no other good reason to wildcard - there have been plenty of times over the last few seasons when I have wildcarded because I can and not because I should. My GW4 WC ruined my team and it took 15 GWs to recover my overall rank!

I did it this gw but the logic behind my decision was I got to dump unwanted players who I would swap anyway later. Their -4 was easily paid back with 2 games

I have a potentiak transfer plan to wc in 29, but it depends on James and Jimenez. If James is rested thutsday, and Jimenez plays from start again and Wolves win, it makes my BB looking good. No point to bb if James starts vs Norwich, then i rather just wait.

Planning to play BB this week. Have 1FT and 2.7 ITB

Thinking Kilman > Robbo for the FT.

Any other suggested moves instead? Worth a hit to bring in another player who doubles?

    Dubravka - Ramsdale
    TAA - James - Rudi - T. Silva - Kilman
    Salah - Fraser - Kulu - Gordon - Raph
    Kane - Adams - Broja

Only thing with BB here is you have Fraser/Dubravka vs Chelsea and Salah vs Arsenal albeit a double so not exactly maximizing the fixtures.
Guess you just need some luck with the likes of Saints beating Watford and Everton + Leeds showing up

Still not sure I want a defender although Davies is ok. Havent seen Sess injury update but would still avoid Reguilon. I'm going Kane & Son - adding Kulusevski to these 2 is probably overkill but if you can only afford one of Son/Kane, pairing him with Kulu is a good option

Have Kane and Son, Doherty has impressed a lot of late and Royal seems firmly second choice now to me so him. I don't envisage too many clean sheets but watching even last night how often Kulusevski dropped deeper so Doherty could go forward I feel like I have to go for him

    Is Matt Doherty a trap?

Obviously he played very well yesterday and has been posting some impressive stats before now. So safe to say he's currently first choice.

But Conte has been talking about the options and competition he has in those wingback positions depending on training and the opponents they're facing. And we know that wingbacks under Conte's system have to get through a heavy physical workload.

So are the people now looking to bring Doherty in just ignoring those comments and assuming he'll play (particularly both games in the double)? Or do you just think he'll be worthwhile even with some rotation? But if you accept rotation is quite likely for him in a DGW, is he really the best DGW player to be bringing in with a precious FT? Or am I just missing something that makes him very likely to keep starting?

Kulusevski and Doherty have a good link up on that side. I don't think Conte is going to disrupt that. We only have the league to go for now so think Doherty plays the vast majority of games from here.

Royal came on for Doherty against Leeds and even in such a short period of time managed to give the ball away and waste a number of attacking chances, Doherty meanwhile has been using the ball well and linking up with Kulusevski very well as well as Kane. He's worth a shot, he did this for years for Wolves, he's able for it

Great article. As a new father to a 5 month only baby girl it really has brought to the forefront how she might engage and enjoy a sport I love so much.

Dressing up in baby saints outfits is done and watch parties with another local saints dad and early morning March of the day watching has started the indoctrination.

More widely though, while I had noticed the increased representation in attendance to games now compared to as a kid (late 90s). It does feel like there is still much more of a male dominance in the UK compared to attendance on other countries.

A couple of la liga games I’ve been too seemed more evenly split and the one nfl game I’ve gone to made a really stark difference in a much more equal audience.

Not quite sure why this is but heading in the right direction and in a few years time I look forward to going to a game with my daughter.

Having such a disappointing WC26 and FH27, this week has been amazing. Rank rise of 71% with my BB and 10 players to go.

Im thinking about skipping on Robbo and doing Digne and Ramsey out for Doherty+ Kulu for -4.
The only way I can bring Robbo is if I downgrade Jimmy to bench fodder and upgrade Digne that way, but that leaves me in a much weaker position for gw30

Points on the board can be better than future potential.

I tried to be too clever on wc to set up a few very average extra players in GW30 over say upgrading to Countinho. Plus GW 30 will likely be low scoring. So unless you’re FHing and attacking it, having the key 4-5 players will pretty much protect rank

    Who to (C) CL fantasy?

    1. Lewa
    2. Sane
    3. Salah

Currently on Salah, tried Lewa last GW and failed massively(as did Bayern).

    My squad is
    Mendy Ramsdale
Cancelo TAA Robertson Ait Nouri Digne
    Salah Bowen Ramsey Saka Martinelli
    Watkins Dennis Broja

Are any of these a good move to make?

    A) Bowen and Digne to Doherty and Son (-4)

    B) Dennis and Cancelo to Kane and Doherty, (means I only have 10 players for the blank gameweek the week after) (-4)

    C) Watkins and Bowen to Kane and Kulu (-4)

    D) Cancelo and Bowen to Doherty and Son (-4)

    E) Cancelo and Bowen and Dennis to Doherty and Kulu and Kane

    F) Cancelo and Bowen to Doherty and Kulu, following week get Vardy for Dennis, giving me 10 players?

tbf all of these are good moves. I like C as allows you to keep Cancelo

I wouldn’t mind keeping Cancelo the only thing is that I already have a few players not playing in the blank so that’s what’s tempting me to get rid

Might get one of those magic 8 balls and use it to make all my FPL decisions. Can't be any worse.

Anyone else have any weird and wonderful ways of deciding between a transfer? Once picked a United defender (1 from 4) out of a hat. Obv picked the lowest scoring one.

If I can't decide between two players I sometimes mentally assign them a number and ask my wife to pick 1 or 2.

If I can't separate two or three players I ask my kids (10 and 8) which name sounds more fun, then pick that one.

I honestly don't get how he hasn't started (same with Mahrez - I rate both HIGHLY).

Ziyech last three in the prem (that he played) 3 goals and 2 assists. Then he assisted their first in the UCL, OK he comes off with a knock so misses Burnley, but why isn't he starting in that run of form?!

Yeah gutted about Bowen, even more so as a West Ham fan. I benched him this week (after WCing) with plans to start him vs Villa.

Oh yeah feel exactly the same about Mahrez, so frustrating he doesn't get enough starts. Had him to start season & on FH27

104 points (-12) bb with 9 players to go including James (C). Very happy with it all! Although no chips left but team set up well for 29 and 30.

    Ramsdale
    Trent Robbo James Rudiger
    Salah Saka Raphinha Willock
    Kane Broja

    Dubravka Jimenez Saiss Ramsey

For this week would you do:
    1. Saiss to Doherty for free (bench Broja)
    2. Willock to Kulusevski / Martinelli for free (play Broja)
    3. Both for a -4 and bench Broja

Is Ramsey+Ait-Nouri+Weghorst to Kulusevski+Doherty+Hwang for -8 worth it?

Will have 8-9 players for GW30 and a decent XI for GW29.

Realized I didn't comment on the article.

Great job, Sam, and you've always been one of my favorite FPL content creators since that time last season when you said you were buying Bruno Fernandes and thought he'd be the top scoring player in the game. No one else believed he could keep it up and yet you knew. I also saw Jules Breach's pre season predictions which were amazing. West Ham to be the dark horses last season was a very unpopular opinion that turned out to be prophetic.

Just wanted to highlight there's no shortage of knowledge from the women in the community. In fact, I'd say their average knowledge is above your average male content creator because they have the confidence to talk about football in a male dominated environment.

Happy International Women's day and I look forward to more representation across the board.
