Sleeper

FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: Pedro Neto

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we take a look at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Pedro Neto.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: Pedro Neto 1
  • Starts: 5
  • Substitute appearances: 8
  • Goals: 1
  • Assists: 1
  • FPL points: 22 (3.2 per match)

Neto made his return from a serious knee injury in February and spent the rest of the season building up his fitness and trying to get match-sharp.

However, it was far from straightforward, as the 22-year-old picked up a foot injury in March which ruled him out of the games against Everton and Leeds United.

As a result, Neto only made 13 Premier League appearances for a total of 501 minutes in 2021/22, but did start to look a lot sharper towards the end of the season, registering an assist against Manchester City and scoring his one and only goal of the campaign at Anfield on the final day.

His underlying numbers in that time were largely good when compared to team-mates, despite Wolves struggling on the whole (more on that later).

During the run-in, it’s worth noting that Neto took up a central role in Bruno Lage’s 3-5-2 formation, although this system is generally rolled out against tougher opposition, and you’d expect him to revert to a wider position at the beginning of 2022/23 given the opening fixtures.

FPL PREVIOUS

For a better indication of Neto’s FPL potential, we should probably look at the 2020/21 season, when he was largely injury-free and made 31 Premier League appearances under Nuno Espirito Santo.

One of his team’s standout performers, Neto topped both the goal-scoring and assist charts at Wolves, registering 13 attacking returns.

The season saw the Portuguese accumulate 61 shots, although it was his playmaking abilities that really caught the eye, as he produced eight assists and ranked joint-eighth amongst all midfielders for chances created:

Whether fielded out wide, as a number 10 or deeper (see below), Neto found a way to impact games, and in a short space of time went from a rotation option to being one of Nuno’s key men.

2022/23: THE FPL PROSPECTS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: Pedro Neto

With a full pre-season behind him, hopes are high that Neto can hit the ground running in 2022/23.

And given the opening schedule, which sees Wolves sit top of our Season Ticker over the first six Gameweeks, he certainly has the fixtures to start strongly.

At this stage, it’s worth noting that Lage’s side really struggled for goals throughout 2021/22 and finished the campaign among the division’s lowest scorers. In fact, only the three relegated clubs scored fewer than Wolves’ 38, while they are also coming off the back of an awful end to the season, taking just 11 points from their final 14 games.

To address those issues, they will no doubt dip into the transfer market, but they will also need some of the current crop to step up.

And the return of Neto feels key given that Wolves struggled to create much from their left-side last season, with just 26% of the chances they created arriving from that zone, compared to 38% on the right and 36% through the middle. You’ll also notice a distinct lack of actual assists from that area of the pitch on the graphic below.

Above: Chances created (assists in green) by Wolves 2021/22

Neto can operate on either flank, but if deployed on the left, will surely add more unpredictability to Wolves’ play, which in turn ‘should’ produce more goalscoring opportunities.

The prospect of him linking up with Rayan Ait-Nouri down that side also feels exciting. The young wing-back really caught the eye at times last season, showcasing his offensive qualities, and with him overlapping Neto it could cause real problems for the opposition.

Neto’s assist potential will also increase if Wolves’ forwards can step up. Raul Jimenez endured a frustrating 2021/22 with only six goals after getting over his horrific injury, while Fabio Silva failed to score at all. Their respective expected goal (xG) delta’s (-0.60/-2.10) certainly suggest they should be doing much better in front of goal.

So, Neto’s return could be a major positive for Wolves next season, which could see them rediscover their goalscoring touch. The 22-year-old has certainly shown flashes of brilliance during his time at Molineux, and if priced at £6.0m, could be a nice midfield enabler to capitalise on those appealing early fixtures.

    Price prediction - Raya 5m

    What would you do?

Sanchez or Henderson would be high on my list alongside a Brentford defender

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      1 year, 10 months ago

I'm banking on Raya being 4.5.

He rotates very well with Hendo. My aim is to keep 0.5 in the bank and hopefully upgrade my 4.0 to Hendo when I want to drop Raya.

Henderson might be £4.5m but I'd be happily surprised if Sanchez isn't £5.0m.

I think Raya will be £4.5m simply because he missed a chunk of last season, so probably didn't score enough points to get a £5.0m rating.

My worry for Brentford is the second season syndrome. Its happened the last 2 seasons to Sheffield United and Leeds United, which is a concern.

At the moment I'm deliberating between Sanchez, at what I think will be £5.0m, and Pope, who I think will be £5.5m.

Your prices are probably right, although Pope could be 5.0.
If Eriksen stays, I think Brentford can have a decent season, but without him, I do worry.

I think Pope would be very popular at 5m. Also, I agree with your stance on Eriksen, he really makes them tick - if he stays it increases the appeal of Jansson to who could find himself on the end of those special deliveries

I also concur. If Erikksen stays, and I think he will, Brentford should be OK. If he goes, they'll struggle.

Although I just get the feeling that the 3 promoted teams are all going straight back down so Brentford should be safe regardless.

The biggest problem I have is that most of the bad teams that were constantly circling the drain have gone now. Burnley were the last.

The next batch, I'd say would be Southampton, Leeds and Brentford, plus Brighton when Potter goes. (Not even Newcastle any more as they are well clear of trouble now).

At the moment, probably only Southampton might be ready to drop, but it's hard to see any of those teams I've mentioned having worse seasons than Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham.

But, that's why they play the games, because you never know who might just have a horror season and end up falling through the trapdoor.

I prefer Chelsea, Tuchel does rotate but at Arsenal there's now Saka, Martinelli, Nketiah, Jesus and Pepe for those spots in the front line. Add in Raphinha and it could be quite hard to know who to go with

If Arsenal match Chelsea's bid, it's down to the player and his preference. It's not over yet. We also know neither of these clubs were his first choice and his mind was set on Barca for a long time. Raphinha would obviously be amazing signing but buying RW wasn't top priority of this summer.

They didn't match it. They spoke to Leeds earlier today and still offered less than what Leeds wanted and it was rejected. Chelsea came in and offered what Leeds wanted and that was that. I said last week when the news of the first Arsenal bid came in and that they lowballed Leeds that I thought it wasn't a wise move when Leeds had a clear valuation, doing it again today is a bit naive knowing there were at least 2 direct rivals interested and that Deco has said that Raphinha wanted a move done before preseason began.

I dont get why we are trying for another right winger. Saka prefers to play on the right. And we still cant get rid of Pepe. Should have gone for Zaha in the first place and i'd still take him over Raph now

From an outsiders' point of view it's a bit odd, I suppose it's about having more options for rotation/ cover but now you have Jesus, Nketiah, Martinelli and Saka and then also Pepe as you say. Adding in more cover is a good idea but if you spend £60m on somebody you pretty much have to play them most weeks, so at least one of Martinelli or Saka will miss out on important development stages if he went there while signing someone younger to play a bit-part role probably is more useful

60m+ is for a slightly above average player is not what Arsenal need. Most of us owned him on fpl this season, have people already forgotten how frustrating he was to own? Constant missed chances and bottling it in the final third.

I would even take Bowen over Raphinha who's a better player but gets less rep because he's not from sao paulo

Ziyech began at 8.0 with zero PL experience, so Raphinha price would be 8 I reckon (Mount 8.5)

I get what your saying Trent, but I think Towers will realise they mis-priced Ziyech and Pulisic last season's, and they won't want to do that with Raphina. I'd be surprised if he was as much as 8. Not long till we find out.

Does anyone think Raphina at Chelsea makes them less likely to play 3 at the back, and more likely to dig out their old 4231 to accommodate Pulisic/Ziyech/Raph combined with their lack of CBs?

It could well be, though not sure tuchel history if he has ever deviated from 5 at the back at past clubs?

I don't see Puli and Ziyech as starters. Even mount may not be first-choice. Sterling-Havertz-Raph

          Mount is playing regularly. 100%

Could be 4 at the back with Kante and Jorginho Infront, and Sterling and Raphina out wide, with Mount and Havertz at 9 and 10
That would leave out Werner, PulIsic and Ziyech.
Then there's poor old Ross Barkley

Can Thiago Silva play in a back 4 at his age? And I don't think Pulisic and Ziyech have to be accommodated for...

I think an attacking trio of Sterling Mount Raphinha would be devastating in their current system. Sterling would be straight in my team and not budging.

        Sterling-Havertz-Raphinha

Maybe Tuchel moves Mount deeper. Tuchel's lost when he doesn't play 3 ATB.

I agree it has to be 3 atb. He needs the double-pivot I think, so that leaves 4 for 3 places and I think Mount misses out more often than not.

Mount absolutely doesn’t miss out. This just isn’t true, and I get it’s an opinion but it’s just wrong. Mount will drop in to the three or we will see a formation change.

We'll see when pre-season gets underway. With potentially new acquisitions at the back - or the youngsters there, the defence will need adequate protection though.

Think Tuchel is a big 3 at the back fan so can't see it. Certainly not to accommodate Pulilsic/Ziyech.

Even if he doesn't, if they go to a Back 4 with fullback and proper wingers, James and Chilwell will be heavily compromised as attacking forces.

Finnish media rumour that Pukki wants out to stay in PL.. and negotiations are ongoing with his agents and Norwich. Not easy though with his age and value.
Brighton have been linked to be interester in Pukki before.

What even is a 9 these days? And is it even good for FPL?

Playing in that position, Havertz ranked 10th for ppg amongst Chelsea players last season. Mount was 3rd, behind Chilwell and James.

Ziyech is still an incredibly talented player but clearly isn't what Tuchel wants. He's better at playing in the half-space and playing balls through while Raphinha is a proper wide player that will take on players and make them commit

You could argue that Wolves' lack of goals last season was contributed mainly by Neto's absence, and that will be resolved this season by Neto's return. I wouldn't rule him out.

You could. but I think Jimenez never recovered from his head injury, and Silva and Hwang aren't PL material. They need a goalscorer as well as a more creative midfielder. I'm not seeing any activity to suggest they're going to strengthen. I wouldn't rule out Neto as a 4th mid in a 4-4-2 or 5-4-1 or something, but he's 6m in LiveFPL and you can get Guimaraes or Eriksen for that.
