FPL pre-season 2022/23: Every goal, assist and minute played

It was easy to miss due to the deluge of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player price reveals but the summer pre-season friendlies got underway on Saturday.

Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers were among the teams in action, all entertaining Football League clubs on their training grounds.

As ever, we’ll be documenting all the goals, assists and (where available) minutes played ahead of Gameweek 1 of the 2022/23 FPL season – and the dedicated Pre-Season tab is the place to find it.

This information might be of limited use at this early stage of course but it’s more and more meaningful the closer we get to the start of the new campaign. It is, for example, how John Lundstram came to attention as an ‘out of position’ defender three years ago. Said Benrahma’s pre-season minutes and form were also noteworthy last summer ahead of his early-season burst of form.

As for the action on Saturday, Arsenal thumped Ipswich at London Colney. A strong-ish XI swept into a 4-0 lead at the interval, with Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m) bagging a hat-trick and setting up Albert Sambi Lokonga’s tap-in. An advanced Lokonga, indeed, teed up Nketiah for two of his strikes.

The academy was brought out for the second half, with Folarin Balogun finding the net at the second attempt to round off the Gunners’ scoring.

Arsenal first-half XI: Leno, Bellerin, White, Mari, Cedric, Partey, Maitland-Niles, Sambi Lokonga, Pepe, Nketiah, Nelson

Arsenal second-half XI: Okonkwo, Walters, Kirk, Awe, Sousa, Smith, Oulad M’hand, Patino, Hutchinson, Balogun, Flores

Palace’s team selection mirrored that of Arsenal’s, with several first-teamers taking to the pitch in the first half but mostly youth team players brought on at the interval.

Jean-Philippe Mateta was assisted by Odsonne Edouard for the Eagles’ opener, with the visitors drawing level after a raft of substitutions at half-time.

Palace first-half XI: Guaita, Ward, Watson, Tomkins, Mitchell, Hughes, Eze, Schlupp, Rak-Sakyi, Mateta, Edouard

Palace second-half XI: Matthews, Clyne, Quick, Phillips, D. Boateng, Riedewald, McArthur, M. Boateng (Raymond 85), Plange, Benteke, Street

No footage or game-time detail has emerged from Wolves’ 4-1 win over Forest Green but the social media account for Bruno Lage’s side revealed that Pedro Neto (£5.5m), Chem Campbell, forgotten man Adama Traore and Bruno Jordao were on the scoresheet at Compton.

Nketiah might surprise a few when he starts centrally with Jesus on the wings

He’ll get the odd game sure- but I reckon he’s been promised to start in most EL and cup games with some prem stuff (especially with 5 subs).

Surely it's been sold to Jesus that he's the main man and starts at number 9 for the foreseeable.

Any idea when FPL will launch or are we in for a week of drip feeding player prices

They should have fed all the teams by the end of Monday…so I’m guessing then?

I'd hardly use the term 'dripping' with over 40 players reveals a day. The last should be revealed tomorrow (Monday), so I'm sure it w ill be very soon now.

Rashford could be a good pick if MU ever get their "shirt" together. Or would you go with Odegaard or Trossard? (6.5 max).

I'd say that (1) Ronaldo needs to leave and (2) Rash needs to show he's back in pre-season. IF those 2 criteria are met, he's the bargain of the season, but don't go on blind faith.

Assuming Chilwell is fit and $0.5m cheaper, I’d go with him. I’m thinking I’ll go both though, in my defence heavy team

Will see how it goes with pricing. Most likely doing the same. 5.5 - 6.0 Def. much better option than mids in that bracket.

Both should do well. James is my pick, but if you really need the 0.5 then Chillwell is still a good option.

My concern is Chelsea defence overall to start the season. Will surely have some new faces in it.

I'm really in two minds about Chelsea wingbacks. I've just taken Chilwell out of my draft. Potentially they could both tear it up, yet last season the wingbacks really underwhelmed. James has SO many blanks (I owned him). I'm minded to hold off and see how they start the season.

I said I wouldn’t start thinking about my team until at least when the game actually started, but here I am again…

Early things for contemplation on my team:

    1. Haaland vs Son?

    2. If Son in 1, is another City attacker required given their run of games? Or would Cancelo be enough?

    3. Is having 1 playing forward viable? (Ie 2x4.5 backups so only 1 bench player who will actually get minutes. I much prefer the value I see in defenders and mids)

    4. Is Chelsea representation needed early on? (Reece James would be my choice, but I really don’t know what to expect from what should be a new look defence early in the season)

    Anyone else considering similar things?

    1. Bring back Rafa

      1. Son for me. I’m seeing Haaland in just about every team and when I questioned it I was told ‘if he starts well you’ll be way behind’…..Not necessarily it depends on if the other player I choose instead of him starts too. Haaland will no doubt be in my team at some point, but I’d rather wait to see how he goes.

      2. You would probably want a City attacker…….I’ve started Cancelo the last 2 seasons, but I’m thinking I might give him a miss this year. They were short on full-backs last season, I see him rotated a little more this season.

      3. I think you need a nailed number 2 striker. I see a lot of teams with Haaland (4.5) (4.5). When he’s rotated you’re short.
I plan on playing 1 up front, but having a $5.0m (Dennis type) who at least plays, as 1st sub

      4. I personally think if Chelsea play with wing-backs, then you do need at least one. $6.0m James is cheap. If he’s $6.5m, I’ll pick Chilwell instead

      1. Jackie Moon
        • 5 Years

        Like all the feedback, thanks!

I’m also leaning towards Son, but it leaves me with the issue in my third question. Without Haaland I’m struggling for other options upfront.

Considering Toney as my lone striker as at least with nothing on the bench he should really start every game and has a good long run.

Would prefer having a second playing forward, but can’t see anything in the 5-5.5 bracket I like and 6 is too much to be benching every week I reckon.

I’m thinking either Mitrovic, Toney or Jimenez as lone striker. Just hope there’s a nailed $5.0m there for backup

      1. Considering this question
      2. Haven't had much luck in the past picking alternative Citeh attackers
      3. Considering this - will probably be a lower mid price forward I'll want to hop on/off without restructuring.

        1. I'm on Haaland but I can see merit in both positions.
        2. you'd want multiple City, but double-defence is not completely mad.
        3. I think mid-priced forwards have been overpriced, leaning us toward one up top, a premium forward. That would be Haaland/Kane/Ronaldo/Jesus at the moment.
        4. I just gave my thought on this in my last post above - I'm minded to start without a Chelsea wingback.

Yeah. Sounds a bit difficult to believe as Manchester City are forever hit with a stick for spending too much. I'm a Liverpool supporter. But I don't think we can hide behind the spending sofa this season. Also Manchester City seem to be selling quite a few players this season. So I hope it will be a much tighter contest this season with Spurs, Chelsea, and Arsenal in the mix.

Just catching up with the later price reveals from yesterday... Did whoever price up the Leeds players not get the memo?! I know we wouldn't have been looking at them anyway, but they seem really poor value given how much good value there's been elsewhere.

I think the consensus is that of all the team reveals so far, Leeds is the only one to have been overpriced.
I doubt many will start with their assets (although I'm looking at Meslier for rotation), but if they make a surprisingly good start to the season, I'd expect a few bandwagons to git rollin'.

Yeah, wasn't interested in any of their players. Just seems weird that, just as an example, they have some defenders priced the same as Arsenal starting defenders.

I can see the logic, but there are illogical outliers. What should be the case is that starting defenders in 'good' sides should come in at 5m. Starting defenders in relegation-threatened sides should be 4.5. But then squad defenders in good sides would be 4.5 and squad defenders in struggling sides would be 4.0.
now White might be a squad player, not nailed on, so 4.5 is okay. But Tomiyasu is surely a starter and underpriced. Conversely, Leeds have a new guy at 5m - that's surely 0.5 overpriced.

Very much so. It makes his value higher than Dias and, I think Laporte (assuming 6.0m).
Alisson is even better value; however, TAA and Robbo exceed his, so I'm looking at TAA, Robbo and Cancelo at the back with Ederson in goal.

You just need to get through the first 8 gameweeks with the Arsenal defence. Once their fixtures turn, there should be a reverse bandwagon.

Looks good. I started with triple Liverpool/City/Arsenal but decided that was too much faith in Arsenal.
Diaz being 5m cheaper than Salah is tempting indeed, but I'm still relying on Salah myself.

    Ramsdale

    Son - Saint-Maximin - Havertz - Martinelli
    Haaland - Johnson

    Bench : Travers / Aguerd / Elanga / Undav

I know it's a heck of a differential but is anyone else contemplating Alvarez for City? I know he takes a city place but he should get loads of minutes even if as a sub, and he knows where the back of the net is. Surely he won't be more than 5/5.5

    1. CONNERS

I think i'd be more tempted by Rodri as cheaper City option. He gets a few goals and is pretty nailed.

Get what you mean, Haaland injury and youd think Alvarez is in, but i cant see him being 5.5, plus like you said, the all important City spot for a bench player. Like Conners, Rodri would be a better and cheaper option tbh

I know what you mean! I’m thinking haaland ederson and Alvarez for my 3 city positions this should allow me TAA Diaz and Salah from Liverpool , Jesus, Tierney and Tomy from arse, Chilwell, Neto and a couple of cheapies !!

With the pricing this year, you can make a great squad (or at least Starting XI) in a thousand different permutations.

I'm thinking this too. Cheap city assets - Alvarez, Grealish and yes Haaland - allows Son, Salah,TAA and Diaz

  19. LangerznMash

I still can't believe Diaz is £5.0m cheaper than Salah. In Liverpool's final 10 games, Salah played 9 and got 6 attack returns. Diaz played 8 and got 5 attack returns.

Similarly, Martinelli is £2.0m cheaper than Saka when in the last 10 GWs Saka got 5 attack returns and Martinelli got 4 attack returns in significantly less minutes.

    I much prefer Diaz + Martinelli + £7.0m over Salah + Saka.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years

With Salah, you know what you're getting year in year out. We don't know if Diaz had a fluky few weeks. You can of course, afford both. I did in my last draft until I decided that Robbo would bag more points than Diaz and is cheaper.

Same with SDaka and Martinelli - Saka should be nailed whereas Martinelli has ESR breathing down his neck. Admittedly, I'm currently on Martinelli for his price, but I'm not overly confident with that pick.

I'd say a quarter of the season is a good sample size, and there is some logic to thinking they will start the season as the finished the previous one.

For me the £7.0 difference is massive and would enable a much stronger squad overall.

      2. TheTinman

I would tend to agree with we don't know about Diaz having a flukey few weeks if this was based on stats.

But Diaz got fast tracked into that Liverpooo team for a reason. Mane was never injured, Jota and Firmino were also available during that time. Klopp sees something special in this kid.

His performances every week were excellent. He always looked a threat even when he didn't return.

£8m for him is criminal and you'd be mental to start without him, whether you're getting Salah or not.

I wouldn't say it's mental, despite agreeing with your optimism. Granted we'll have TAA and Salah, the run-off is between Diaz and Robbo. I decided that Robbo will get more minutes over the season, and more points, and is a million cheaper.

I posted these numbers a couple of weeks ago. It's the goals/games for certain players in all competitions in the 2022 calendar year. Obviously, exploits in lower leagues can be taken with large pinches of salt but if we're going to believe the numbers Salah's now got something to prove to justify 13m and Diaz isn't the answer.

      Mitrovic 23/29
      Haaland 18/20
      Son 18/28
      Kane 18/32
      Nunez 16/21
      KDB 14/27
      Bowen 13/28
      Ronaldo 12/23
      Solanke 11/22
      Havertz 11/31
      Salah 11/35
      Jota 10/37
      Toney 9/19
      Jesus 9/23
      Diaz 8/30

I'd say Salah was running on fumes post-AFCON. If you split Salah's last season stats in half, he's rank far hiher in the first half. He starts the season fresh.

Yeah, that's flip side of the argument I suppose but I found him very frustrating to watch from around Christmas time and as things stand at the moment I'll be starting off without him until he shows me that there's still a 250+ point fantasy player in there.

Andy, just was walking the dog this morning and the 2x 4.5m attacker came into my mind.

You mentioned how rare it is 2x subs are needed. This is true. However what you didn't mention (but you've probably already thought of) is the fact that just one risk of rotation, someone surprisingly out of favour, injury, suspension etc. Would mean you're taking hits to jump onto early season bandwagon.

It also narrows your flexibility, so if the bandwagon is a striker you're looking at a -4 to get there.

Just a thought. It's quite a high risk high reward strategy, because I do agree that mid priced forwards look to be a weak price point.

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

Yes, I take on board the risk factor. I do have premium defenders and mid-priced midfielders to sell off, so I think surgery can be done with a 2FT. But the bulk of my squad are long-termers from the Top sides. It's really only Arsenal assets that I fear might be flaky. No, the only really risky punt is that Haaland flops, Lukaku-like - but even then, Haaland + 4.5 forward in a 2FT should bring forth a pair of in-form mid-priced forwards.

      1. TheTinman
        • 8 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Fair play. It's even more of an option if you target an early wildcard. I'll probably set my team up for that when I actually have a look to identify a fixture swing. Everybody ends up wildcarding in 6-12 anyway, so may aswell set your team up to attack those early fixtures.

Actually, I've tried to set up for the long term to hold off on a WC until after the WC (I'm assuming there are no changed to rules or chips until Official FPL says different). I hope to be impervious to bandwagons of lower level players (from lover-level sides, I mean). Not that my intentions ever last beyond GW1 😉

Last couple I've read have really pi55ed me off. They've done that post-modern thing that TV series do - get to the last page and just stop. No conclusion, no resolution. I keep dipping back into the greatest series of novels ever written in the whole of human history - A Song of Ice and Fire.

I persuaded my wife to get a team last season. She was transfer averse but she did OK.
