FPL 2022/23 ‘sleeper’ picks: David Raya

The ‘Sleeper’ series returns to Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who had a quieter 2021/22, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise, who we think have the potential to make an impact in the coming season.

Here, we look at David Raya (£4.5m), who could push his way back into our thoughts as an FPL asset in 2022/23.

The screenshots and data are from our Premium Members Area – sign up today for £2.49 a month (billed annually) to get access to all of these statistics and a whole lot more.

2021/22: FPL RECORD AND STATS

FPL 2022/23 'sleeper' picks: David Raya 1
  • Starts: 24
  • Goals conceded: 27
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • Saves: 78
  • FPL points: 95 (4.0 per match)

David Raya was one of Brentford’s best players in their debut Premier League campaign, as they ended in 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

The 26-year-old featured in 24 games for The Bees despite missing a few months due to a knee injury, conceding only 27 goals and keeping eight clean sheets, form which earnt him a maiden international call-up for Spain.

In that time, Raya also collected five bonus and 20 save points, proving himself to be a very capable shot-stopper at this level.

The Spaniard ranked 17th in his position for FPL points, but matched Aaron Ramsdale (£5.0m) and Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) on a points-per-match basis, a record that placed him joint-fourth among regular starters, only behind Alisson (£5.5m), Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) and Ederson (£5.5m):

With Raya injured last season, Brentford missed his presence greatly, with his deputy Alvaro Fernandez conceding 24 goals in 12 appearances, only registering one clean sheet.

However, following his return to action in February, it’s fair to say The Bees and Raya stepped up a level.

From Gameweek 24 onwards, in 15 starts, Raya averaged 4.1 points per match, a tally only two regular starting ‘keepers could beat (see below).

Five clean sheets were kept in that time, while the Spaniard also racked up 56 saves – only Illan Meslier (£4.5m), Nick Pope (£5.0m), Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.5m) recorded more.

Raya’s passing ability, which is crucial to the way Brentford try to play out from the back, is also worth noting, with only Alisson, Ederson and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) surpassing his BPS pass completion total of 32.

“I’ve always felt comfortable with the ball at my feet, and we work on that every week. The manager wants us to be another attacker, an extra element in bringing the ball out, creating chances and passes, short and long.” – David Raya

“The goalkeeper could wear the number ten shirt. He has sent several incredible balls, exactly what you should do when you play against us.” – Jurgen Klopp on David Raya after Brentford’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool in September

2022/23: THE PROSPECTS

Squad steps up as Robertson maintains fine form: FPL notes from Liverpool v Brentford 5

After a stellar first season in the Premier League, Brentford will look to continue improving in 2022/23.

And their end-of-season form bodes well, as they won seven of their last 11 matches, keeping four clean sheets while only conceding 12 goals.

“We will keep the foundations from this year – the defensive side of the game, fitness and set pieces. Then we’d like to add a bit more on the offensive side of the game in terms of controlling games like we did against West Ham at home. That was a very good example of how I’d like us to dominate games even more.” – Thomas Frank

“I don’t believe in all this second season stuff or the narrative around it. That said, I know we can be relegated next season, but I also know we can finish seventh. Everything’s possible between 20th and seventh. We want to add layers, build and end higher and play better football. That’s the aim, but you never know what happens to a team when they get a lot of injuries or lose momentum. But hopefully we’ll avoid that and build.” – Thomas Frank

Brentford ended the 2021/22 season ranked eighth overall for expected goals conceded (xGC, see below), but the fact the players now look comfortable in a 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 offers encouragement that they can adapt tactically to different situations and maybe improve upon that defensive record.

Notably, the Bees have a sustained good run of fixtures right through until the World Cup break.

In fact, they don’t meet one of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool aren’t concerns until the festive period.

The big six sides they do encounter in Gameweeks 8 and 12 both have to come to the Brentford Community Stadium, too.

Now, with hopefully an injury-free season ahead of him, managers looking for value should consider Raya, who is perhaps the pick of the £4.5m ‘keepers on offer in FPL.

Haaland Foden

Given that Doherty has been told he can leave (talksport), and Emerson Royal is rubbish, would a Djed Spence get regular starts at Spurs?

Cheers. I hadn't seen that. Bit surpsied actually. Out of my team he goes! I suppose Spence could, but early days.

How much credence are you giving this? The article was so bad it even claimed that Conte signed Emerson. Doesn't make any sense to me since, as you rightly point out, Emerson is rubbish & Spence is pretty raw. Also seen rumours that Emerson might leave, which is what I expect once Spence signing goes through

If it's true then I'd imagine he would but I'm doubting this story. Both Doherty and Royal are on Spurs' SK tour, and I haven't seen any of the more reliable Spurs news outlets on Twitter reporting the story so I don't think it's true. If he's letting anyone go it'll surely be Royal but with him travelling I'm guessing he wants him to stay too.

Hehe we could still be wrong but it just doesn't seem to make sense, especially since this Spence deal seems to be difficult and he's still very young anyway so I imagine this'll be a season for him to find his feet in more than one where he'll become first choice
          .

Why do spuds dislike Doherty so much. He was great at Wolves and when finally given a proper chance late last season was great for spuds too before getting injured.

Thoughts on this 4-5-1 if you don't mind. Really cannot decide on formation, keep going from 4-4-2, 5-4-1 and now 4-5-1 🙂

      Raya

      TAA / Cancelo / Chilwell / James

Salah / Diaz / Foden (Kulu) / Wissa

      Kane

      Balcombe | Williams | Archer | Greenwood

Pretty much as good as it gets with 2 premiums , you could downgrade a defender and maybe get another 8m mid in , but Chilwell/James could keep up with some of the 8m mids so it is your preference

Not sure you need Chilwell & James. Also for what it’s worth I prefer 4-4-2 as I don’t feel comfortable with 2 non playing forwards in my bench.

I played 451 with Kane much of last season, don't see an issue with it. Maybe with Håland's fitness record it's slightly more risky to pair him with 2× 4.5s but I don't see Kane getting rested/rotated anytime soon

Most likely 442, maybe 451. Got a few drafts. Core is fairly settled like this:
              4.5
              Trent/Robbo Cancelo Doherty Trippier
              Son Diaz Martinelli Mount/Maddison
              Håland
Still tinkering with an extra 8m mid spot or a 2nd forward (Vardy/Darwin/Jesus/Johnson)

To be fair, Kane's a 90 minutes 38-game man. If he gets injured, you just transfer him out for any other forward in the game.

He ain't. There are at least 6 players who could play in the front three plus two others who could also do a role:

I think the only reasonable assumption is that Rodri, Foden and KDB will play the most games, with the rest being subject to greater rotation.

It looks quite good, but here's the thing...

Would Haaland, Neto and a 4.5m def in a 4-4-2 outscore Saka, Bowen and Cash in a 4-5-1?

            I'm not so sure...

Would you play 4-4-2 with that?

I do like it, feel you could maybe downgrade Diaz to Coutinho or Bruno G in order to get Dunk to a better defender or to get a better back up GK.

Equally Saka would be a good swap for Diaz. I think double Liverpool mids is risky as they both eat into each others minutes I think.

Not sure that Rich will take over from Kulu.

Rich is more of a CF imo, and Kulu plays on the wing so I can see Rich eating into Kane's minutes in order to preserve kane and prevent him being injured, particularly with the 5 sub rules.

Kulu has proven he can work extremely well with Kane and Son, would be unwise from Conte to bench Kulu for Rich when they are a different sort of player.

Also, I hate Richarlison (from a city fan - it's the only thing I agree with Liverpool fans on).

Thank you pleased someone agrees with me on this!

Richarlison will be a sub imo which makes the transfer very odd from my perspective. I know spurs are a step up from Everton although I have a feeling that they will bounce back from their atrocious season. Richarlison could have stayed and been their talisman, their hero but instead chose to leave everton to sit on a bench in London. Illogical to me, I'd rather have the game time.

And why spurs payed 60m for him is beyond belief! They could have got Jesus, Sterling or Haaland for at least 10m cheaper !!

Kane will have less 90s this season and Rich will probably get a chunk of European games.

People say they haven’t signed him for 60m for that, but these days 60m in football isn’t really a huge amount

arguably yes 60m isnt a lot in the current inflated market.

Wouldn't have wanted to spend that much on a back up CF, we got Haaland and half of Alavarez for that amount 😉

As for buying a backup son is 30 and has been at spurs for 7 years. When he signed eriksen, alli and lamela were key players. Things change. Richarlison signed fot presumably 5 years not 1.

Double down brew (smile) PPM? look at forwards from Germany to England. An average of 50% drop off and PPG does not consider injury and rotation. Going to a very good side and nothing wrong going with Haaland; just over 60% EO compared to Kane? All things being equal; The Haaland choice may not be the right one.

                  Very unpopular opinion.

If he is the better player, why did City choose to wait a year for Haaland over getting Kane there and then last summer?

                  Kane is massively overrated imo.

Haaland is better albeit not massively at the minute, by the time Haaland is Kane's age he will be a city legend scoring 40+ goals season in season out

By that logic why did they want Kane before they went for Haaland? Levy was the issue

I don't see how Kane is in any way overrated he's comfortably one of the best strikers in the world and injury permitting will go down as top scorer ever in the premier league and will have done it playing for Spurs

I don't see how Haaland is better as a player, he scores goals but also plays in an inferior league, assists creation etc Kane is very far ahead

I think we went for Kane because we knew we would be unable to get Haaland that year, so there was a little bit of panic from the city perspective, going into a season with no recognisable talismanic CF.

However, we baulked at the price, cut out losses and decided to wait for the player we wanted in the first place - Haaland

Kane is a wonderful player and very rounded, he's one of the best passers in the game, has incredible vision and does a lot of defensive work. That being said, while he is a very good goalscorer he can be pretty wasteful and wayward with his shooting (from an FPL viewpoint it's why he often missed out on bps last season that he should have had from the other outstanding parts of his game). Haaland isn't anywhere near as good of a passer nor does he have Kane's vision and he won't drop back to do the defensive work Kane does, but he is a lethal finisher and his movement in and around the box is exceptional.

The question here is what will likely get you more fantasy points? If FPL points was based off of all aspects of the game then I expect Kane and KDB would be at the very top of the scale, but at least with this game that's not how it works. For example, I feel like I could pick out a number of players that I think are better "players" than Salah, but his amazing ability for making and finding space around the box, his knack to poach chances, and his greediness means he's very hard to compete with in FPL terms.

Oh yeah I didn't mean fpl sorry just mean better player in football

That said I think Kane will be fpl wise better too, there isn't that much difference between the finishing but there is a lot of difference between other aspects of the game

City are utterly dominant and should create a lot, but Haaland is facing a step up from the incredibly poor bundesliga standards

I'm backing Kane, could easily go the other way though

Hah yeah I had a few telling me that between my choices of Kulu/Grealish/Jesus/4.5mid or Bowen/Olise/Wilson/Odegaard that the first option was best but I think I feel the latter is more balanced so I'm with that for now anyway. I've never been one to stick to template too much although it's not always worked out!

Go with what makes you happy mate, but would the 4.5m in the 1st have to start and 2 lot Olise over Neto?

The 4.5 wouldn't have to start but it means I have a weaker bench, with my current setup I have Tomiyasu on the bench so he can rotate in and out depending on fixtures or to cover in case of rotation. I like Olise, had a good season last time out and he's good for bps. Not really keen on the Neto hype

4-5-1 with lots of 8m mids is so so balanced. My tactic at the start of the season always used to be stocking up on mid-priced assets that are easily tradeable. This tactic makes you start with only one truly premium player though.

Bench a bit expensive but captaincy would be a nightmare!!
Watching Salah/Kane/Haaland hammer it and see everyone captianing them would be too hard to handle

yes I'm sure I'll have at least one of them before long. must admit I'm a little wary of the Haaland bandwagon - will pep start him from game 1 plus he's a bit injury prone

Best option is to go kane gw1 at home to Southampton then go to Haaland - atm thats my plan and i think thats set in stone tbh

Love to go both Kane and Haaland but cant see how to fit in Salah too

I think Kane is a great pick this season. Currently sat on 15% ownership (vs 66% for Haaland) a- a top draw proven performer and a potentially big differential

Kane is a great pick and bizarrely at 16% ownership vs 65% for Haaland, he could be a major differential
