FPL pre-season: Jesus over 50% owned after debut brace

We’ll be bringing you Scout Notes on every single friendly involving a Premier League club this summer as we gear up for Gameweek 1.

These articles get more detailed – and more useful – the closer we get to the start of the 2022/23 season as preferred formations, favoured personnel, injury concerns and form assets become apparent.

We’re also keeping tabs on the minutes played in each of these warm-up fixtures, with Premium Members of Fantasy Football Scout able to access this information at the bottom of this article.

It’s important to stress that, at this time of the summer, plenty of academy products get ample game-time. This is true again this year, as players involved in international duty in June were given a belated break and most of them haven’t been featuring in the very early pre-season friendlies.

Thursday and Friday’s reports are listed below, with the weekend write-ups to come later today.

NURNBERG 3-5 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Jesus x2, Elneny, own-goals x2
  • Assists: Nketiah x3, Martinelli x2

The FPL ownership figure of Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) rocketed up past 50% after the Brazilian scored twice on his Arsenal debut on Friday.

The striker is now selected by 53.4% of Fantasy managers at this very early stage, an increase of over 7% on what it was before he made his Gunners bow. He remains by some distance the second-most-owned forward in the game, behind only Erling Haaland on 64.6%.

Jesus required less than two minutes to make a mark, cutting in off the right and exchanging passes with Eddie Nketiah (£7.0m) before finishing well.

The Brazil international went on to prod in his second and Arsenal’s fifth strike, having earlier effectively forced two own-goals when closing in on a cross from Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) and when pouncing on a rebound from a Nketiah shot that hit the woodwork.

It was interesting that Mikel Arteta opted to pair both Nketiah and Jesus up front, having started the game in last season’s preferred formation, 4-2-3-1. But the introduction of the summer signing from Manchester City prompted Arteta into a system switch, with the two FPL forwards forming a strike partnership in a 3-5-2 – a system that also saw Martinelli used as a left wing-back:

Above: Arsenal’s formation after kick-off in the second half

It’s a formation that we might not see every league fixture but one that gives Arteta options depending on the opposition/match situation.

“I’m so, so proud. I’m proud to be here at this big club. I’ve completed four or five days together with the lads, and I just want to say thank you to everyone at Arsenal because they make me feel at home. Everyone is talking, coming to me and saying ‘good luck, we are happy to have you here’, and I’m happy to be here as well. That makes me feel at home.” – Gabriel Jesus

“That’s why we brought him here, to put the ball in the back of the net and obviously for his confidence and for him to believe in what we are doing I think it’s really important and he’s settled really well.” – Mikel Arteta on Gabriel Jesus

Arsenal’s end-of-season clean sheet drought spilled over into pre-season as they frequently wobbled and conceded three goals, although there was good news from Arteta after the match when it was revealed that Kieran Tierney‘s (£5.0m) 30th-minute substitution was pre-planned and not enforced due to injury.

Arsenal XI: Turner (Okonkwo 68′); Bellerin (Martinelli 46′), P. Mari, Walters (Gabriel 46′), Tierney (Cedric 30′); Sambi Lokonga (Patino 68′), Maitland-Niles (M’Hand 68′), Smith-Rowe (Elneny 46′); Pepe (Jesus 46′), Nketiah (Marquinhos 68′), Nelson (Balogun 68′)

LEEDS UNITED 4-0 BLACKPOOL

  • Goals: Koch, Firpo, Rodrigo, Joseph
  • Assists: Firpo, Harrison, Gelhardt, Shackleton

Jesse Marsch sent his troops out in a familiar 4-2-3-1 for Leeds’ thumping of Blackpool, with budget forward Sam Greenwood (£4.5m) in the ‘no. 10’ role behind lone forward Joe Gelhardt (£5.5m).

Jack Harrison (£6.0m), scorer of eight goals in each of the last two Premier League seasons, was noticeably involved at set-play situations, ‘assisting the assister’ for Robin Koch‘s (£4.5m) opener with a quickly taken free-kick and then providing the corner that Junior Firpo (£4.5m) nodded in shortly after.

“We’ve worked a lot and talked a lot about set pieces and I’m happy to see the group excited about these moments as well.” – Jesse Marsch

Whether Marsch plans to accommodate both Harrison and new signing Luis Finisterra (£6.5m), who played exclusively on the left flank last season, in his line-up going forward is something to monitor over the next few weeks.

Gelhardt, denied a goal himself by the assistant referee’s flag, then teed up Rodrigo (£6.0m) – who was playing in an unfamiliar right-wing role – for the Whites’ third before Marsch gave youth a chance in the second half.

Leeds United XI: Meslier (Klaesson 45’), Drameh (Shackleton 61), Koch (Mullen 45’), Struijk (Moore 61’), Firpo (Davies 45’), Roca (Bate 61’), Gray (Allen 72’), Rodrigo (Miller 45’), Greenwood (McGurk 61’), Harrison (Forshaw 61’), Gelhardt (Joseph 61’).

NOTTINGHAM FOREST 1-3 COVENTRY CITY

  • Goal: Biancone
  • Assist: None

Only the first half of Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 defeat to Coventry on Friday would have been of any interest to FPL managers, with boss Steve Cooper handing game-time to reserves and academy products after the interval.

Forest were in their now-customary 3-4-1-2 shape in the opening 45 minutes, with four summer signings making their debuts: Dean Henderson (£4.5m), Giulian Biancone (£4.5m), Moussa Niakhate (£4.5m) and Taiwo Awoniyi (£6.0m).

The versatile Biancone was deployed at right wing-back and is likely a placeholder for the incoming Neco Williams (£4.0m), who FPL managers will be keeping tabs on given his price and starting status.

The sound of Cooper urging Biancone to push up “higher” would have been of encouragement to prospective Williams owners, too, and indeed it was the French defender who grabbed Forest’s only goal of the game when he swept home a loose ball in the Coventry box.

With Forest adopting a higher line, all three of Coventry’s goals came from balls hoofed over the top – albeit two of them were conceded by the second string after the break.

Henderson won’t have been happy with his part in the Sky Blues’ equaliser just before half-time, with the loanee slow to get down to a Matt Godden shot.

Forest first half XI: Henderson; Worrall, Cook, Niakhaté; Biancone, Yates, Colback, Ioannou; Lolley (Hammond 37′); Taylor, Awoniyi

Forest second half XI: Smith; Back, Mbe Soh, Panzo, Donnelly; Cafu, Ojeda; Xande Silva, Hammond, Mighten; Nuno da Costa

SERVETTE 0-2 WEST HAM UNITED

  • Goal: Alese, Mubama
  • Assist: None

Two youngsters were on the scoresheet as West Ham opened their pre-season with a win.

Centre-half Aji Alese and young striker Divin Mubama were on target, tapping in from close range after unwitting opposition touches from a Manuel Lanzini (£5.5m) free-kick and a Said Benrahma (£6.0m) shot presented them with open goals.

Benrahma of course was a popular Gameweek 1 punt this time last year after an excellent pre-season but this was more Hyde than Jekyll from the hot-and-cold Algerian, whose first touch and finishing let him down on Friday.

The Hammers were lucky to bank their clean sheet, with Servette hitting the woodwork three times and missing more chances aside, although the visiting defences in either half contained only one likely first-choice starter.

West Ham United XI: Fabiański (Trott 46′), Ashby, Dawson (Diop 46′), Alese, Cresswell (Zouma 46′), Coventry, Lanzini (Ekwah 46′), Fornals (Chesters 60′), Benrahma (Okoflex 60′), Masuaku (Longelo 46′), Antonio (Mubama 46′)

Unpopular opinion: Son won't get as many points as last season and will therefore represent worse value.

I do think he's harder to justify given Spurs now have someone like Richarlison to cover him / sub on for him if needed. But pretty much every season this is said about Son and about him and him overperforming and he goes and does it again.

He's a 200+ pointer every year. Richarlison will switch with Kulusevski most or when Kane is injured/needs a rest.

That doesn't mean he's great value at £12m, but he will get min. 200 points I think

How many points will Kulusevski get is the real question I think. If he can somehow cover most of Son's points for £4.0 less, it's a no brainer to invest in him. We can also upgrade other players with this cash. Son used to be cheaper and underrated in the past, but now he's the second most expensive player in the game. It's not the same, even if he goes and does it again.

He will be worse value because of his price increase, but will easily score as many points

Kane is on penalties, cheaper, reliable captain option, more likely to play 90 minutes even with the new rule and more subs. He could catch Rooney on the all-time top goal scorers list if he scores 25 this season. Then he has 2 or 3 years to surpass Shearer, which is his goal, dream, motivation. I just fancy him more as a pick and I think that people are sleeping on him.

This, his price is amazing and with spurs reinforcing he'll be able to play a bit further forward too

Actually seems like Kane is the more popular pick on here at the moment. But I still feel like Son will outscore him (as a mid) so I dont mind the extra 0.5m as I'll be rotating Son/Håland for captaincy. Also its not like Spurs have signed a creative mid yet so the onus will still be on Kane to drop deeper & play others in behind

I do hold the OP's 'unpopular' view. He benefitted from Kane barely showing up and Kulu not showing up too (albeit for a better reason) in the first part of the season. Add to that Richarl eating into Son's time and surely his overall points total will be less. Kane on the other hand, in a good mood all season, should better his total.

Some extra detail on Spurs' training today, including Conte working with Doherty on moving the ball out of defence quickly, Richarlison impressing as part of a front 3 with Gil and Moura and then up to playing as part of a front 3 with Son and Kane. Kulusevski limped out with a slight calf issue earlier

I hear what you're saying, but to get 400 points with Salah + a mid is going to cost you at least £20m.

2 X Pool defenders is a decent value proposition

Isn't that 'Value (season)'? Points (last season) per million (current price)?

          E.g. Ederson's Value (season) is [last year's points (146)] / [this season's price (5.5)] = 28.18 (rounded to 28.2).

I chose a player whose price I know changed between 2021-2 and 2022-3

Mendy should be a set and forget. Get a 4.0 back up keeper.

6.5 is a lot of $ to have on your bench in one player. Downgrade and upgrade elsewhere. (Cash to Neco & ASM to another 8M mid?)

          Not sure who Lis is?

Nice 4-4-2 formation (I presume). However I don't get the hype around Bruno G or Neto, go for someone like Coutinho etc as the third midfielder spot and another fodder player for the fourth spot. Then upgrade Neco to Cash or someone like.

DEF TAA, Laporte, Perisic, Tomi, Neco
MID Salah, Son, Neto, Bailey, Perriera

3 way rotation of Neto, Bailey and Fulham bound Perriera actually works surprisingly well. Happy to play 2 out of 3 of them gameweeks 1-6 looking at fixtures

Anyone going with KDB? Feel as if he’s being very overlooked especially given City’s possible change to 4-2-3-1 with him in the 10 role. Interpreting past stats is one thing, but anticipating changes in future stats is the most important skill in FPL. We all know he’s an unreal player and we all know he excels when used further forward.
Can see lots of KDB returns in the first few gameweeks which will shake up the template.

        Mendy (Raya)
        Trent Cancelo James Perisic Cash
        L.Diaz Kulu Saka (JWP Andreas)
        Haaland Jesus (Greenwood)

            With Salah:

            Mendy (Raya)
            Trent James Perisic Cash Tomiyasu
            Salah Kulu Saka (Andreas Murphy)
            Jesus Haaland (Greenwood)

Lack of Cancelo is concerning...could free up 2.5 through Mendy to Fodder and Saka to Kulu in order to upgrade Tomiyasu to Cancelo but I feel that weakens the team and if Martinelli doesn't start I've no adequate cover...

        Jesus in a 4-3-3 or Saka / Mount in a 4-4-2 here?

The later with Kulveski or Maddison for me but I've been burnt by Mount and Saka before. Ake at 5m if he moves to Chelsea is an interesting one. Outside of whoever has the RB spot at 5.0 for Spurs or a rotated Cucurella at City he could be sound buy.

The term "cover" makes so little sense to me. It just says "I can't afford X" so I will get his colleague "Y" and pray Y assists all of Xs goals. Its easier to just accept you can't have everyone and some players points you'll have to do without.

i think that only applies to individual players, for example Diaz doesn't cover Salah but he does cover a bit of the Liverpool attack, same goes for say Matip and Trent, the former doesn't cover the latter but he does cover any potential Liverpool clean sheets and would be a good pick in his own right as long as he stays nailed

Non-template for me, thoughts? Inevitably wildcarding around GW6-GW8, so I feel like rolling the dice early:
        Ederson 4.0
        Trent Robbo James Doherty* 4.0
        KDB Diaz Neto Wissa* 4.5
        Kane Jesus Johnson*

        *depends on pre season etc

I want Haaland and think he’s a great pick, but I’m not quite convinced on him over Kane to begin with.
I think Salah has looked poor for several months and money is better spent on other Liverpool assets.
I think KDB is a fantastic option if playing in the 10 role, and could get many early returns. He and Kane both finished the season in great form and I see that carrying over.

        Taa Cancelo Tierney _____ 4.0

The most interesting players from Leeds (Leeds fan opinion) are
        1) Kristensen 4.5m def can play RB or RWB and has scored a lot in previous seasons, 10 goals last season if I remember right + assists.
        2) Aaronson 5.5m mid will play behind Bamford as attacking midfielder and starts every game probably

Must see what Sinisterra does before going for him but I would not surprise him being Leeds overall top points scorer next season. Meslier is one option for goal but Mendy only 0.5m more expensive I shall go there.

Going full Moneyball. Looking at last year's scores the best team I could get for £100m at this year's prices was:

        Sanchez 126
        TAA 208
        Cancelo 201
        VVD 183
        Cash 147
        Salah 265
        Son 258
        Bowen 206
        JWP 149
        Fornals 117
        Toney 139

        Sub: 4 / 4 / 4.5 / 4.5

        Totals 2009 points.

Anyone so any better or is that an indication that 4-5-1 is the system to go with??

The past doesn’t necessarily reflect the future! I wouldn’t say forwards are dead and buried as FPL assets because of last year. Kane under Conte has been a different beast, Haaland is obviously a huge asset. Even in the lower brackets, we have more nailed out-and-out bagsmen this year such as Mitro and Solanke.

I definitely felt 451 was optimal last year but the forward pool has changed quite a bit so I'm open to 442 (also due to price hikes for the top performing mids)

Are we as a community overlooking Rashford? Poor last season yes but I think Fpl has got this pricing incorrect by 0.5-1m imo.. decent goalscorer, a good manager and good opening fixtures surprised he is not in more teams to be honest

If Ronaldo leaves he becomes a bargain. That's what it hugely depends on

Think his best position is on the left with Ronaldo central and Bruno in the hole?

Let's see if he can find form first, at his price he's extremely easy to transfer in.

He might be just another Delle Alli.

He absolutely has to prove he merits our attention. Maybe he'll tear it up in pre-season, maybe it'll take hm a few GWs. Or maybe he and Martial will be banished from our thoughts forever.

Poor in 2019/20 for sure, absolutely woeful/non-existent in 2020/21.

We need to know he's going to play before we can even consider him, which is by no means a certainty yet.

          For me it's

          Diaz
          Saka
          Mahrez
          Foden
          Kulusevski
          Mount
          Maddison

            Foden
            Mount

Not really - Kulu, Son, Kane is still the best front 3 and if Kulu maintains his goal involvement he's a bargain

          Diaz
          Kulu
          Foden
          Saka
          Mount
          Maddison

Have no idea how to rank them, except that Diaz is number one.

Just can't look past this draft, been on it since game launched. Any thoughts? If Neco Williams is 100% nailed at 4.0 I might move Tomiyasu to him and Raya to Mendy/Pope/Ramsdale.

        Raya
        TAA Robbo Cancelo James
        Salah Odegaard/Rashford BrunoG Neto
        Haaland Jesus

        4.0; Tomiyasu, Pereira, 4.5

Why? I think that slot is overrated. I much prefer the team like this than having a cheaper defender and a 8m mid.

          Nice team.
Not convinced BrunoG is that great an asset, I just feel like he’s the best of a bad bunch at the price bracket. Also think Cancelo will be slightly worse value this year, especially if Cucu comes in for them. I’d consider something like Doherty + Diaz over those two, that’s probably all I’d change.

Will have to monitor how BrunoG plays in pre-season. I think Newcastles opening 2 fixtures are great so might as well give him a shot. Cancelo can still play on the right even if Cucurella joins and the last I heard the deal to City hasn't progressed. I still think that even if Cucurella joins Cancelo will play 4/5 games which I'm fine with given his potential.
