FPL 2022/23: Can Dias or Laporte cover Cancelo?

Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) has been handed a significant price rise in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ahead of 2022/23 and is now the joint second-most-expensive FPL defender.

The price hike was inevitable after his fine 2021/22 in which he banked 12 attacking returns, 19 clean sheets and 201 points.

However, while the Portuguese now costs £7.0m, team-mates Ruben Dias (£6.0m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) are available for a million less.

There’ll be many Fantasy managers, then, who will seriously consider the cheaper centre-halves as Man City defensive coverage from Gameweek 1 onwards.

With that in mind, we will run a comparison of the three City defenders in this Premium Members article.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: FPL RETURNS 2021/22

PlayerPointsPoints per matchAppearancesGoalsAssistsClean sheetsBonus points
Cancelo2015.6361111927
Dias1414.929 (2)251412
Laporte1604.83342188

Cancelo finished second among FPL defenders for points after cracking the 200-point mark in 2021/22.

His total of 11 assists was identical to Andrew Robertson’s (£7.0m) and only one short of what Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) managed, while the Reds’ right-back was the only defender to better Cancelo’s total of 27 bonus points.

Reliability of starts was another plus point in a side otherwise riddled by rotation: he made Pep Guardiola’s line-up in 36 of the 37 matchday squads he was available for.

Laporte was pretty much as ‘nailed’ as Cancelo, suffering only two benchings in the whole of 2021/22 – and the first of those was because he had spent time in self-isolation and missed training.

The Spaniard chipped in with four goals and two assists to supplement his 18 clean sheets.

Dias, meanwhile, had his involvement curtailed towards the end of the season after an unfortunate hamstring injury.

However, he still managed two goals, an eye-catching five assists and 14 clean sheets, averaging 4.9 points per match.

CANCELO V DIAS V LAPORTE: GOAL THREAT

PlayerMins per penalty box touchMins per shotMins per shot in the boxMins per big chanceMins per shot on target
Cancelo29.939.8104.1806.8140.3
Dias70.9133.8160.6602.3803
Laporte64.480.988.5404.6404.6

Cancelo attempted a remarkable 81 shots last season, more than any other Man City player including Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), but only scored once.

One of those efforts hit the woodwork, but his expected goals (xG) map (see below) pinpoints exactly why he struggled to find the net more often, with only 38% of his goal attempts arriving inside the opponent’s penalty box.

In fact, despite taking 81 efforts, the Portuguese averaged just 0.06 xG per shot, so his odds of scoring any individual attempt is six per cent.

Despite taking 46 fewer shots overall, Laporte actually racked up one more attempt in the box (32, see below) than Cancelo, whilst also registering three additional big chances.

It’s also worth noting that the majority of the Spaniard’s goal threat stemmed from set-pieces. In fact, among all FPL defenders, only Liverpool duo Joel Matip (£6.0m) and Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) registered more attempts from dead-ball situations than Laporte in 2021/22, something which should be factored in given De Bruyne’s ability from corners and free-kicks.

Dias, meanwhile, was behind in all of the above metrics, but getting on the end of a set-piece can sometimes be a bit of a lottery and in 2020/21, he actually trumped Laporte for goal threat.

    Morning all,
I enjoyed that friendly last night. They say "it doesn't matter", right? Well, it does and it doesn't.

    What DOESN’T matter:
    The result
Liverpool - they met their commercial obligation but the first team players are not ready

    What DOES matter:
Assessing what ETH brings to the table -
    Seemingly, a lot
Most importantly, the 'CBA' attitude of last season was absent. We could be seeing good players playing well this season. I'll now be keeping an eye on Sancho, Rashford and, yes, Martial.
Tactics - rapid counters in numbers, plenty movement off the ball and actual pressing (which requires the absence of Ronaldo).
The nature of the positive playing style does leave the defence badly exposed if a mistake is made - an intercepted pass, Maguire, Fred or McT dwelling on the ball. I don't know how defensively aware De Jong is, but I'd still stay clear of the defence.
I saw enough to say, not "United are back ", but their reduced-price assets are worth monitoring.

I'm curious, what position did Bruno play in and what role did he have? I'm still a bit unsure of how he fits into the ETH philosophy, I don't doubt his effort or willingness but he tends to excel in a style that is far away from a possession-oriented team so I'm wondering how he'll adapt

Same No.10 but roamed about much more. ETH seems to be all about movement. He often pulled out wide right and combined with Dalot. I do suspect Eriksen might perform a similar role more successfully, so I didn't include him in my ones-to-watch. I didn't sense that ETH is aiming for 'possession-based' - not like City or Liverpool, but fast-paced countering. A kind of more sophisticated version of Ole-ball. But he does need to work on what to do when losing possession against Premier-quality opposition.

        1. Eze Really?

The danger is IMO United are weak after losing the ball that requires a better level of defensive thought process.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. ETH will need to work hard on that and unlike the front line, I'm not sure the defence has the quality to adapt. It still surprises me that despite De Jong's qualities, they're still not going for a defensive screener, leaving a huge hole to be exploited.

Cheers, perhaps my description as possession-oriented doesn't exactly explain it well. I know ETH puts a lot of emphasis on movement and attacking in numbers and getting players up the pitch quick, but as you and Darwin's Dinosaurs say it's when the ball is turned over that ManUtd will suffer while they adjust and Bruno is the type to give away the ball a lot in trying to make a breakthrough. The Athletic said they expect Eriksen will join up with the squad soon so perhaps we'll have a better idea by next week of what he'll do

Everything you say is fair. Definitely worth monitoring like you say but we need to see more before our knees start jerking because they had the odd good games against better opposition under both Solskjaer and Rangnick.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Yeh, absolutely. But I think we can take into account that the desire to press even when unfit suggests the players will have a positive motivation. And regarding Ronaldo, I don't think ETH's system can work with him on the pitch. He'll be acutely aware that the last 2 United managers lost their jobs over that issue - the key point is will he have the cojones to keep Ronaldo out of the side? I suspect this was part of the discussions in taking the job. If no one wants Ronaldo and he stays at United, I think ETH has to get him playing with the U18s or something.

There’s got to be a lot of internal politics involved as Ronaldo sells shirts. Definitely what worries me most. Bruno would be nailed in a lot of fpl teams without that issue

It has nothing to do with cojones. United will be paying Ronny £18m to play this season. He'll be in the first team and on the pitch for most games even though its not ideal tactically

If Salah continues his end of season poor form and Haaland takes a while to get going, then that team could fast track itself to a comfortable gap at near the top. Pressure on KDB, Son and captain picks otherwise

If he is on pens then he would be a better pick that Haaland given the extra point per goal, cs points and more assists. We have to hope for some pens to be awarded in pre-season to be sure.

I think he's shied away from penalties a bit before and said he doesn't want them, missed a couple. Mahrez was first choice but still had misses (including at Anfield a few seasons ago) and missed his last one. Haaland is definitely in with a shout given his recent record

Watkins and Wilson up front in a 3-5-2 is likely to be the starting formation for me.

I think the City mids offer far greater value than Haaland, especially with Sterling and Jesus out of the picture.

And I have 3 main options:
    A) 451 - Mount, Maddison, (4.5)
    B) 442 - Mount, Jesus, (4.5)
    C) 442 - Trossard, (4.5), Vardy

Its a slight structural risk with Håland, sure. But I'm still torn as to whether I want 1/2 up top in general, especially considering I have Son over Kane. Could hop off Jesus to Johnson, I still like Vardy, and maybe Darwin's time will come soon, but is that enough supply for 442? Suppose I can always revert back to 451 on WC if needed

and if Haaland doesn't play you're effectively down to 10 men because 5-5-0 is not a valid formation.

I like A, but I think it's too risky, Haaland will inevitably get rested/ rotated at points so with two fodder strikers you'll be stuck. C is a nice differential punt for early on, both have good fixtures to begin with and both present decent options to move to if you need/want to move either on. B covers some decent bases, so not against that at all either, might be a better long-term option than C but I'm attracted to C the most personally.

fairly easy to switch between Haaland and Kane in a 1 striker system if you're happy to use a transfer though

True but it feels a waste, transfers are precious and seeing a fair few plan to go Kane GW1 and move to Haaland GW2 doesn't make sense to me, just go with Haaland at that point. Will be hard to predict Haaland's benchings anyway

Thanks all. Early UCL is going to be tricky to navigate. Hoped to get a solid run out of Håland first, but maybe I'll tinker with some one premium (Son permacap) setups

To be fair, we get 5 GWs before CL hits, and most players have used their wildcard by then.

Currently have the following mids combination:

    Gordon 5.5m/Saka 8m

Already have L Diaz 8m and I don't rate Netto...any other combination you would recommend.

I think that 8.0 mid spot is a good one, so it's a good option.

The problem, though, is that the £8m mids were all £6.5-7.0m last year, so they were excellent value because they outperformed their prices and allowed you to have better players around them.

Now they've gone up by an average of £1.0m, so you can't have loads of them in your midfield like last year plus have big at the back, plus your premiums.

This year you're probably getting less value from them because of the price hike.

        1. waltzingmatildas
          • 13 Years

True, and I think when those cheaper options show up, we'll need to jump on them. The way I see it is you are getting a little bit of reliability from the 8.0s until we know where to move to

Exactly how I see it too.

Good FPL assets are going to emerge from the £5.5 to £6.5m bracket.

At least, we hope so anyway!

I feel like I've finally settled on a well balanced team. What do you reckon?

    Raya 4.0
    TAA Cancelo James Mings N.Williams
    Salah Son Diaz Rashford Andreas
    Jesus Johnson Archer

    Final tinkering will be on
    1) best 4.5 gk
    2) best 4.5 defender
    3) Son or KDB
    4) Rashford or drop down to a 6.0/5.5/5.0 that pops up
    5) best 6.5 below forward

I'm not sold on Haaland yet. It may force me into an early WC but we'll see.
Diaz - there is an option to do James and Diaz to Robbo and e.g. Coutinho. But I think I prefer the former.
Johnson - not sold on either - but will rotate him with Andreas/Williams. Just not keen on having two 4.5 forwards, in case Jesus is bench.

            Thanks for the comments!

I like the vast majority of it. Still a bit early to he settled on Rashford but I think I've had my say there. Do you plan to start Johnson against Spurs/City or rotate? I'm interested but likely to wait til at least GW6 myself

I’m really quite settled on this for now. Some fairly template picks but seems balanced enough to move to anyone I need:

    Raya
    TAA/Chilwell/Perisic/Gabriel
    Salah, Diaz, Mount
    Haaland, Jesus, Johnson

    Balcombe, Andreas, Neco, DaSilva

Almost faultless. I just come back to my usual observation - Johnson will be trounced in the points stake by most 6m defenders, eg Laporte.
You can't do a straight swap - you'd have to lose 0.5m somewhere or get a good 5.5 mid instead if you did take that onboard.

        I had Cancelo and Guimaraes

However, with Walker I can have Walker and Diaz.

It gives me a fully rounded 11

        Ramsdale

        Digne Trent James Walker

        Diaz Foden Salah Martinelli

        Haaland Jesus

Hmm thought he'd be fairly nailed as only Cancelo can really play RWB and that would probably happen only when Zinchenko plays.

I agree with this. Matip will still surely get a lot of time given his excellent form last season, Konate had last season to settle in and offers something different to Matip, I'd expect they'll both get a lot of games but that we might begin to see Konate move to the preferred option

Kouli would be a great replacement for Tilva as a not-too-speedy reliable middle of a Back 3. Ake on the left, and Chalobah on the right (or Kouli if Tilva starts). It's good, but not Rudiger-great.

Yeah he's up against some pretty blunt attacks & gives you the option of holding WC longer. I'm confident enough that he's going to haul CS + A + 3BPS in at least one of these games (something like a 1-0 win over Forest/Wolves/Palace) to make it worthwhile

I’m leaving towards a 5-3-2 setup that is very similar to this.
My main decision is Salah or no-Salah.

Which I know many of us are grappling with.
My ‘Go Salah’ is similar to yours but with more CHE:
      Raya
      TAA/Cancelo/Chilwell/James/Trippier
      Salah/Martinelli/Kulu
      Haaland/Jesus

      Steele//Pereira/Dasilva/Greenwood

With ‘No Salah’ being (changes in CAPS):

      EDERSON
      Trent/ROBBO/Cancelo/Chilwell/James
      DIAZ/SAKA/Kulu
      Haaland/Jesus

      Same bench.

So essentially it comes down to:
      A: Raya, Trippier, Salah, Martinelli
      B: Ederson, Robbo, Diaz, Saka

      Could go either way!

Yeah, I have a couple of Kane drafts.
          For me though;
Haaland; is non-negotiable. I think he will post huge returns (if he remains fit)
Jesus; is under-priced by at least a flat £1.0m and is a solid pick in my draft.

Which means to include Kane (which I very much agree with your point) leaves my midfield light (defence I can cover).
It basically gives me a midfield three of; 1x £8.0 and 2x £7.0-£5.5
And I’m not sold on any £5.5s.

Still lots of pre-season to absorb yet though right!

    Salah Rashford Andreas Son
    Haaland Jesus

How is this Threemium with Chelsea+Arsenal/City+Spurs+Pool defense?

I just cant seem to drop Son, feel like he will be the best premium this season with spurs showing intent in transfer window.
