How to compare FPL players using minutes/appearance filters

When comparing players in the Premium Members Area of Fantasy Football Scout, it’s often useful to look at their ‘Minutes Per’ stats or check the ‘per90’ filter to level the playing field.

This makes a comparison between players with disparate playing times more insightful.

Ideally we want to target players who are certain starters, but first XI players may have missed a period through injury or perhaps they’ve burst onto the scene and gone on to establish themselves after impressing as a sub.

‘Minutes Per’ or ‘per90’ allows us to see who performs best if playing time were equal.

However, it’s important not to forget time played entirely; a sub who makes an impact off the bench might top a per90 stats table but that doesn’t mean we should be adding them to our Fantasy team.

By the same token, players who regularly complete matches will suffer compared to those taken off earlier in the game. Last season Gabriel Martinelli (£6.0m) averaged 64 minutes per match, so is looking at his per 90 stats slightly misleading if he’s not playing 90 minutes? A per appearance comparison might be better.

As always, context and interpretation is important.

Refining Results

To help improve the results of a per90 comparison, last season we added two important filters to our Player Stats tables:

  • Minimum Appearances (‘Min App’)
  • Minutes Played per Appearance (‘Mins/App’)

Now we can refine our sample size by filtering out players who haven’t played many games, and we can also remove substitutes by setting the Minutes per Appearance (‘Mins/App’) filter.

  • top ten ‘minutes per expected goals’ from 2021/22 with Mane and Aubameygang removed

Applying these settings to our KPI Attacking table and sorting by ‘Minutes per Expected Goal’ makes for interesting reading.

Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) feature prominently but while both are likely to get more pitch time this season, will they sustain their impressive ‘minutes per expected goal’ rates away from Man City?

Conditional Formatting

Premium Members have the option to refine their results even further when creating a custom Members table.

The ‘Conditions’ in a custom Members table act like the filters in Player Stats.

But, unlike in the Player Stats section, there’s no restriction on the filters/conditions that can be applied. So you can be much more specific with your requirements.

Perhaps you feel a minimum of 60 minutes per appearance is too generous and that 70 minutes would be better, you can apply that setting in a custom Members table.

  • top eight ‘xG per Shot Non-Penalty’ from 2021/22 with Mane removed

When creating this ‘High Quality Chances’ table, rather than filtering by the number of appearances I decided to set a minimum number of non-penalty shots instead. I also upped my ‘Minutes Played per Appearance’ to a floor of 70 minutes and added a ‘Minutes Played per Start’ filter.

The table throws up some fascinating results but perhaps raises more questions than answers.

Playing for a new team, in a new system, will Sterling continue to be presented with such high-quality chances? Or will Thomas Tuchel adapt his approach to get the best out of his new recruit?

Will Phil Foden’s (£8.0m) xG per Shot suffer following the arrival of Erling Håland (£11.5m) as centre forward?

Can the elite finishers from that table, Son Heung-min (£12.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m), who needed just 0.7 and 0.69 xG to score one goal, maintain their high level in front of goal?

Time Out

Whether it’s used for filtering results or for making an informed comparison, ‘time played’ is one of the most important considerations for a Fantasy manager.

And with the implementation of the five substitutes rule next season, it’s likely to play an even greater role in our decision-making.

In part two, we’ll reveal the tweaks we’ve made to our time played stat used for all ‘Minutes Per’ and ‘per90’ metrics. In particular how we’ve improved the minutes recorded for those substituted in a match.

Often a stat we take for granted, playing time can have a crucial bearing on the stats tables we use when planning our transfers.

Then Bailey seems a waste of money on the bench. That's 1.5m over 2 GWs. Just play Undav or Neco in GW1, I'd say, or make some other changes.

But I don't agree that Newcastle and West Ham away are good fixtures anyway. Difficult start for a new player to the PL.

That's the problem. I think they both will. Would rather rotate transfer between Kane & Haaland, and own Trent, Robertson, Luis Diaz.

To keep a similar-ish team but improve, I would do

      Ederson + Mount + Undav > 4.5 + 4.5 + Son

Then WC if you are in deep doggy do do from the risky bench

How big of a concern do people think rotation might be this season? With games every 3 days or so for the big teams until November plus 5 subs being reintroduced is it worth trying to find players who are less prone to rotation. Or should we just accept it will happen sometimes and deal with the potential 2 pointers of the bench or 1 point if they come on.

    1. Float

I'm basically going with the latter - you can't overthink it. You should still pick players as nailed as possible, just accept that sometimes rotation will happen and roll with it.

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

I definitely think we'll see a lot of rotation in that period you mention, EL/CL clubs will effectively have midweek games every week from the end of August until the World Cup begins. But there's not much you can do about it, just try to ensure you have some cover of sorts on the bench

Pick players who are priced low due to lack of minutes and risk of rotation

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

It will be huge. There's plenty benefit in having players from midtable sides not in Europe - after GW4 anyway. I do believe top scores will be well down on last season, making some of the premiums with considerable price rises poor value.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          1 year, 9 months ago

Not sure how that relates. From every team, Europe or no Europe, there are players who are priced lower due to lack of minutes and risk of rotation in previous season(s). These players could see more minutes this season, and increase their output and value. I'm not saying to buy nailed players.

Anyone looking to go with Foden I'd be a little worried about his match time early on this season. City have been one of the latest teams to begin preseason and only have 2 games to play before the community shield game against Liverpool next week (by contrast, Liverpool will have played 6 games by then). Foden hasn't travelled with the squad due to his vaccination status so he - along with Stones and Gundogan - are training with the U23s in Croatia. They'll only get to join up with the rest of the team on their return from the USA next week. Pep has voiced his concerns about their short time together for preseason and not having those players there:

"The second season here [2017/18], when we finished with 100 points, that was the only pre-season when we were all together from day one. Since then it's always four players arrive, then after a few weeks some other ones and we start the season with incredible problems. That's why we drop every season at the beginning many, many points.

This season I thought, 'maybe we will be all together', but due to personal situations with these three players, and other situations with some other ones, we cannot be together. We are delayed but it is what it is. We are going to move forward and today you have to adapt."

(Just to note about his comments regarding dropping points at the start of the season, they've dropped points in at least 2 of the first 5 games of the season in the last 3 seasons in a row.)

Alvarez can play on the flanks like Jesus.

Last season, 5 attacking mids were competing for 3 spots across the front, essentially. This season, when Haaland is playing, it's more like 4 competing for 2 spots, which is worse for rotation, or 3 competing for 2, which is only marginally better than last season. Ultimately, I don't think there is suddenly an opening for Mahrez that wasn't there before. That said, he's in my team right now 😀

We said this last year when Jesus was still a CF, Sterling only really played on the left / as a false 9 and Torres was being used as a CF. Then Pep played Bernardo there for a period before moving Jesus there, Torres got sold and Mahrez only ended up starting 15 games. Sam Lee says Foden and Palmer are likely to get minutes at RW too, I just think it's too big a risk

Leeds are a wait and see for me, if they look good in their first few matches i'll certainly look at their option closer.

With Kristenssen's attacking returns last season you have to factor in that Salzburg are completely dominant in their league. Will he be able to replicate that in a team that won't be as dominant in most matches though.

        Counter points:
        - Marsch is a more defensive coach.
        - signed 3 x defensive first team players. (Kristensen, Roca and Adams).
        - Captain Cooper was injured for large part of the season including the awful period we were conceding about 3 goals per game. The difference in goals conceded with / without Cooper was huge, over a goal per game less.
        - fixtures are important, especially when you consider most of the teams we play in the opening 7 GWs are low scoring teams.

          • 8 Years

Marsch appointed around March. Assume that around gw30.

From gw30 Leeds only get 2 clean sheets same as Norwich.

Meanwhile, Brighton and Newcastle get 4.
          Spurs get 5.

Yes. I know fixtures is important. I want Daniel James in my team but he is suspended.

          2. I'd argue Haaland is more nailed

Seeing a lot of 'big at the back' templates, but I feel the big strikers could go crazy this year on a Golden Boot race, so team aligned with that thought:

    Sanchez
    James - TAA - Tierney - Mings
    Salah - Diaz - Martinelli - Neto
    Kane - Haaland

Bench: Gaz - Neco - Greenwood - Andreas

    Thoughts?
Tierney vs. Zinchenko depending on pre-season

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years

I wouldn't want to bet on Tierney or Zinchenko based on pre-season, personally. I would downgrade Salah to upgrade Neto or a defender, or find a way to back yourself and get Jesus too, since he seems like the best value of the lot!

Dont like Mitro pick, he's done this to us before.

    2. adstomko

Not convinced by Mitrovic despite his Championship record.
Fulham try to play on front foot & won't work in PL imo.
Forest however counter-attack & could be the surprise package.

      1. Fletch69

I have fallen for Mitro twice before and got burnt. However, 42 in 43 plus his record for Serbia in the last year means I'm going to risk it again. Different manager this time so third time's a charm!!

If he doesn't perform it's easy to trade down to Johnson or Mbuemo

Chilwell hasn't looked as up to speed in pre-season so far. I'm sure he will be a good pick but James is safer for now.

  21. Fletch69

Not many teams with a decent bench option. I like to have one who can score reasonable points so I'm not using my weekly free transfer to just replace injured/suspended/rotated players.

Got a fixed 8 then 3 from Mitrovic, Neto, Ramsey and Dalot depending on fixtures/form etc.

So for week 1, I have 2 Pool at the back and will be putting Mitro in the bench. Week 2 will probably be Dalot etc etc

That's my method yeah. 1st sub can end up getting quite a few starts that way so most of last season I liked to have 12 players that I'd be happy to have in my starting 11. Doesn't have to cost all that much, a good 4.5m defender will do the trick

      1. Fletch69
        • 2 Years
        1 year, 9 months ago

Exactly, I'm not sure the usual suspects this year of Andreas or Neco are going to be hitting 2+ points per game. If you end up using them 25 ish times per year it's a big hit

    2. JuulKrapuul
      • 5 Years

I guess most people see Andreas Pereira and Neco Williams as potential starters.

      1. Fletch69

Maybe starters but I would expect a poor points return from either of them

    3. TheBiffas
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

I think of it this way, across 10 games you may need a sub 3 or 4 times, while the other 10 play. So it's like 108 vs 3

    4. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years
      1 year, 9 months ago

Doing the same here, have Fofana (might end up being Dalot or Tomiyasu again) rotating in and out of my bench as needed. I expect players like Haaland to get rotated here and there too so nice to have a player come in that I can hope may pick up more than 1/2pts

I'd consider it but it's not easy to start with given he hasn't even signed.

With Cucurella over Cancelo I can upgrade Diaz to Son with some other minor shuffling, so it's a fun option to have.

    Haaland - Jesus

When Man.Utd keeps up the good work, thinking about:
    A) Dias - VdBeek (11.5)
    B) Cuccurela - Rashford (11.5) (Only when Cucucerla --> City)
    C) Zinchenko - Rashford (11.5) (Only when Zinchenko --> Arsenal)

Best combo for g/w 1 what changes would you make for g/w 2
    Son or KDB
    Kane or Haaland
Going by ownership it's Son/Haaland but
KDB/Kane makes for a brave differential (Haaland g/w2)
I think getting this one right could be the difference between a good start & a great start

Partey and Tierney's injuries (the latter resulting in Arteta playing Tavares) were huge burdens on Arsenal defensively. That being said even if they're both fine for GW1, I don't fancy Arsenal to keep a clean sheet in their first couple of games, and I'd probably expect even Bournemouth may trouble them in GW3, Arsenal's away form wasn't great last season, look back at how they were outfought by teams like Brentford and Palace and it's something to consider

Best overall is probably Alisson but I'm guessing it's too hard to reach for you. Honestly I'm at no better conclusion between the 4.5s and I keep changing my mind on them
