FPL Draft: Tips for picking players in the draft

Fantasy Premier League Draft is free to play and runs parallel with old-school FPL. If you’re already registered for the long-running FPL game, you can also immediately get involved with Draft.

Draft uses exactly the same scoring system as FPL with only one exception: there are no captains or vice-captains. There are also no chips or Wildcards.

The biggest difference, of course, is that no two managers in the same mini-league can own the same player.

READ MORE: How to Play FPL Draft – A Beginner’s Guide

Here, community writer Rdrake1990 talks us through some tips for the draft process.

The Background

I’m in a five-team FPL draft league with some friends from school. I was leading for 24 out of the 38 weeks in 2021/22 and went into the final week with a two-point lead. Unfortunately, I had a bad final week and my rival had a good one and I ended up 34 points back – which oddly was the biggest gap between first and second all season.

Of course, this hurt. But when I looked at our original draft squads it transpired I had the worst one in the league, but I did well picking up players on waivers. This got me wondering: what is the best order to pick players in the initial draft, and how well did the winners of other five-team leagues do at picking at the start of the season?

The optimal choices

I’ve been over the player points for the last six years and used those to get some average points for the best possible picks across a five-team league – that is, the top 10 goalkeepers, the top 25 defenders, the top 25 midfielders and the top 15 forwards. Doing this, we get an overall draft order that drops out like this:

FPL Draft: Tips for picking players in the draft

Two things really strike me.

Firstly, you can see here just how large the drop-off is in quality during potential round one picks. The very best midfielder (in recent years, almost always Mohamed Salah for what it’s worth), is usually worth about 30 points more than the second best one, and 60 points better than the fourth or fifth best, who’d still be a round one pick for someone. In the existing version of FPL Draft, it’s just random who gets handed this potential advantage, although personally, I’d like to have the option of rolling over a league and giving the first pick to whoever finished bottom the season before.

The second thing that sticks out is that after round one and two, there are only about 40 or 50 points between the players you’re picking up in rounds three or four and those coming right at the end in an ‘optimal’ selection. What this says to me is that there are probably lots of ways to win in the draft, and that all is not lost if you draft badly. This also matches up with my experience this year.

But supposing we want to pick the best possible players right from the start, what order should you pick them in?

The very best forward probably creeps into being a first-round pick but basically, everyone’s first pick should be a midfielder. This means that in round two, you probably want a top forward, and then probably in round three you should see people taking the best defenders. After round three, it’s more of a mixed bag in the middle rounds, but based solely on total points, the best order is probably something like:

  • 1 – MID
  • 2 – FWD
  • 3 – DEF
  • 4 – MID
  • 5 – FWD
  • 6 – GK
  • 7 – MID
  • 8 – DEF
  • 9 – MID
  • 10 – GK
  • 11 – DEF
  • 12 – MID
  • 13 – DEF
  • 14 – FWD
  • 15 – DEF

The big surprise here for me was the goalkeepers appearing so high, especially the second one. The truth is you can only play one at a time, so unless you are specifically rotating yours through the season, in practical terms it makes sense to wait until the end to pick your second one. In a five-team league, everyone can have two top ten side keepers, after all.

Anyway, that’s an attempt at an optimal order, but how did winning managers this season draft theirs?

The winners’ choices

To answer that question, I’ve looked at the initial draft picks across all five-team leagues, selected out the managers who finished first, and then added up how many times each position was selected in each round.

The order below is the order that maximised the overall frequency among league-winning managers:

  • 1 – MID
  • 2 – MID
  • 3 – FWD
  • 4 – DEF
  • 5 – GK
  • 6 – DEF
  • 7- FWD
  • 8 – MID
  • 9 – DEF
  • 10 – MID
  • 11 – MID
  • 12 – DEF
  • 13 – FWD
  • 14 – DEF
  • 15 – GK

The winners go heavy on midfield early, and then don’t return to it until the middle rounds when they go hard again. They also have every position covered at least once in the first five rounds. They also pick a forward early, one in the middle, and one towards the end.

In many ways, these selections reflect how you might allocate a budget in the regular FPL game: a few expensive attacking players, a couple of premium defenders and a premium goalkeeper, and the rest made up with budget slot-fillers, and a clear leaning towards a 3-5-2 formation. The optimal selection, however, picks each position at more regular intervals.

In terms of how often managers made these choices, 74% of winning managers go for a midfielder in round one and 42% go for their second midfielder in round two. At the other end of the draft, 57% waited until round 15 to pick up their second goalkeeper and 43% waited until round 14 to fill in their fifth defender slot, with 25% of fourth defenders taken in round 12. The managers clearly have their early slots and late slots pre-determined in terms of positional coverage, and play the middle rounds a bit more by ear.

My conclusions

The data leaves me pondering a choice between following the wisdom of other winning managers or blindly following the data and seeing what happens.

The reality is that I love the idea of just going with what the numbers say but I’ll get to draft day and talk myself out of picking Jose Sa as my second keeper in round 10 over snapping up James Ward-Prowse as my fourth midfielder, and the experiment will be ruined.

But even in that scenario, I’ll take comfort from both my own lived experience that there really isn’t that much difference between the totals scored by round four picks and round 12 picks, and that even the very worst initial drafts in the league are recoverable with good transactions over the season.

I suspect he'll give him an easy debut at home in GW2.

I think Pep will want to let them re-adjust to a form with an out and out fwd over time and not against West Ham.

Might come off bench in West Ham game if they aren't winning

I think it'll still be fine. James/Chilwell are more than capable of matching say a 6.5 mid and there's always the WC if needed.

Right now happy to avoid James/Chilwell for first 2 gameweeks until their defence settles and they have played spurs.

Means I will hopefully have 2 FTs to switch out my def/mid balance

5 at the back gives you a better chance of holding 0.5 in the bank for asset hopping.

For me the main reason not to go 5ATB is the fact that at 4.0, Williams makes an excellent first sub with no extra investment required (baseline price). This frees up funds elsewhere, even though upgrades elsewhere are more expensive.

I think the last sentence is key! Strong chance I start the season with Neco, but teams can still look worse with him in it

Cheers D - to expand on it further: the best two subs in the game are Williams and Pereira. They are both functionally 'free' if you structure your team to be able to accommodate a fodder defender and a fodder midfielder.

It remains to be seen whether you will actually need to plug those players into your team. In the early weeks it seems likely that there will be little in the way of rest and rotation, and key injuries can and probably should be covered by transfers. But they may be needed in cases such as late illness, especially now that Covid is endemic, warm-up injuries etc.

Not only this but people who start off with a structure they feel isn't working are likely to jump on cheap assets in order to change structure. Their chosen assets will be the ones who have actually scored points, and these are likely to be Neco and Pereira. This gives you an early shot at building team value in a less risky way than relying on your core players to do well: Neco could only really go up; Jesus, Rashford etc are perhaps as likely to go down as up.

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years

Agree with all your points! It does seem for now that those baseline players are best placed on your bench rather than in the XI, so then you have the choice to upgrade Neco or a 4.5 mid, and it's cheaper to get the points from upgrading Neco (unless you like, and have space for, Neto!). If Trippier had nicer fixtures, I think I would be on 5ATB already (and then downgrade to Neco after GW1 to raise his value for you).

Indeed, both sides of the argument are equally valid and the plain fact is that there is not enough data to be able to definitively say which is right:

Those managers who invest big at the back / 5 at the back and go into GW3/4 with zero clean sheets and zero attacking returns, which is more than likely, could well be looking at the likes of Neto on 2G 1A and regretting their decisions, and vice versa. I suppose it's not so much about predicting the outcome of a small number of games and more about having a plan to fix things with FTs (ideally) or early WCs (if necessary).

Pretty happy at the minute but fear if I want an 8m midfielder which I inevitably will do at some point, it will take 2 transfers to do so.

    Raya - (Lis)
    Trent - Robbo - Cancelo - Dalot - (Neco)
    Salah - Martinelli - Neto - Bailey - (Andreas)
    Haaland - Kane - (Archer)

Not just the 8.0m Rashford & Sancho will take two transfers so that's about 8-10 well priced players you are hoping won't hit form.

Do you need Robbo, you could bring in a 5.0m/4.5m and then get Diaz as your 3rd Lpool slot.

    TAA, Dias, Trippier, Dalot
    Salah, Rashford, Bailey
    Kane, Haaland, Jesus

    (fodder)

Indeed, that's the trade-off. May be able to swap Dias out for Walker and then upgrade Bailey (or even Andreas/Dasilva to Neto to rotate with Bailey). Rashford's a great option for me

He rotates well with Neto. I've got them both. It gives me a week or two to park Bailey on the bench and ship him in a 2FT.

Yeah that's a bit of a last minute addition but yeah tbh don't overly like having double Arsenal defence either just like their fixtures. Not sure I have too much faith in other 4.5's though.. Any suggestions?

Structure is good but too many risk players.

Swap 2 of Peri, Saliba, Walker, Mahrez, Rashford

Peri/Walker to Gabriel to keep Arsenal Def, Mahrez to Sancho then gives you 0.5 to turn Saliba into a 5.0

      Rashford - Martinelli
      Ramsdale - Ederson

      Saliba should start GW1

Keep an eye on Perisic news & whether he starts final preseason game

If loads of people sell Kane for Haaland gw2, will Kane go down in price and Haaland go up? Or will it not really affect anything if they’re both highly owned?

Never get how prices changes work haha

Loads of people would probably make a 0.1 swing in each direction. I think (but don't know) it is calculated on % of ownership, so the more highly owned the player the more transfers it will take to make the change

                • 6 Years

                That will happen.

I can't remember how it works but believe it's based on their relative share of ownership

E.g. those with higher ownership need more players to transfer them in/out for price changes.

LiveFPL do a price tracker which is fairly good at predicting the price changes, prices can only change once a day and do so at midnight so check there at the end of the day to see if it's likely to happen. It's right about 9/10 times

GW1 team, I knew at some point I'd bottle big at the back in order to fit Sancho, Martinelli & Neto

3rd Def will rotate each week.

              Raya (4.0)

              Cancelo-Trent-Saliba (Ait Nouri-Neco)

              Salah-Diaz-Sancho-Martinelli-Neto

I wouldn’t say that’s too shabby at the back! For me tho I think Robbo comfortably outscores Diaz so might be worth looking at a 4-4-2 IMO

Keepers are tough as the 4.5 options don't have great fixtures. Raya was decent last year for his price, getting 4 points per game and kept a clean 1 in 3 games he started. If you were just looking at fixtures Leeds is the pick, but I think Raya will outscore Meslier despite a slightly tougher start
