FPL team guides: Brentford – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what Arsenal and Aston Villa players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brentford.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series (articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off).

Data in this article comes from our Premium Members Area, which you can access with a discounted subscription for as little as £2.49 a month today.

FPL pre-season lessons:

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4811th
Shots44213th
Shots in the box3177th
Shots on target147=11th
Big chances679th
Expected goals (xG)52.3911th

The attacking statistics for Brentford very much rank in mid-table, which isn’t bad for a newly-promoted side making their Premier League debut.

However, their year splits into life with and without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). His Gameweek 28 debut followed a terrible run of nine defeats from 11 matches, totalling just four points and six goals in those months.

Until Gameweek 27, the Bees were down in 17th place for total shots and 15th for goals scored.

Eriksen’s arrival sparked a late-season revival of seven wins and 21 goals but, now that the Dane has departed for Manchester United, we don’t know how good Brentford will be in their second campaign.

Headline-making victories came against Arsenal on the opening Friday, plus a 4-1 win away to Chelsea. Also impressive was doing the double over West Ham United.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5612th
Clean sheets9=10th
Shots conceded50310th
Shots in the box conceded3058th
Shots on target conceded17913th
Big chances conceded69=10th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)55.148th

Again, Brentford’s numbers line up slightly better than their 13th-placed finish.

Most of their season was played with a back-three system, which might explain why they ranked eighth-best for conceding shots inside the penalty area. They were seventh-best at allowing attempts from the left flank but 13th for those down the right.

Three of their nine clean sheets arrived within the first five outings, catching FPL managers off-guard. Of course, those who then bought a defensive asset had to wait until Gameweeks 13 and 25 for the next pair.

From Brentford defenders, only Chelsea scored more than their 13 – which includes the three of reclassified Sergi Canos (£5.0m). Add this to defensive assists and they are the best outside of last season’s top four (25).

Pontus Jansson (£4.5m) lead the way for matches started, with 37, while Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Ethan Pinnock (£4.5m) follow with 33 and 32.

OPENING FIXTURES

The opening run of Brentford fixtures is very generous, avoiding all of last season’s top four until Gameweek 12.

In fact, starting from Gameweek 3, they top our Season Ticker all the way up to Gameweek 16.

PREDICTED GAMEWEEK 1 LINE-UP

The more I thought about it. I think I will set my gw1 team really short term. three weeks. If things need to be changed there is always the option for me to bring in Arsenal players gw3 on. Current draft I only have Jesus.
But Martinelli and Odergaard, Zinchenko are all kindly priced and easy to phase in from gw3 when Arsenal's fixtures really look good.

I expect Palace to perform well against Arsenal and they could maybe even shock them. Against Leicester it should be high scoring but I would be surprised if Arsenal keep a clean sheet.

Other alternatives to bring in after gw3 are the Brentford options such as Dasilva who would actually save the pennies.

    My current draft is

    Ederson (Steele)
    -
Robertson - TAA - Cash - Cancelo (Neco Williams)
    -
    Bailey - Salah - Grealish - Rashford - (Andreas)
    -
    Jesus-Kane (Plange)

Yeah I'm only setting up a team for the first 4-5 weeks. Hit the fixtures aggresively then wildcard.

I was wondering was anyone else doing that way. It just seems have panned out that way. With Bailey's form - three good fixtures. Likely no Ronaldo. Man United OK early fixtures so it leaves open - Rashford/Sancho/Martial. Plus Foden is not match fit for City so Mahrez and Grealish seem like good short term picks at least.
Then there is the unlimited transfers gameweek 16, In normal seasons wildcards set up a team for 10 gameweeks.

Trying a premium heavy team, main caveat is having to play Neco. However in preseason he has been on some corners and he's playing WB. He could assist plenty of Lingards hauls.

    Sanchez
    Trent // Cancelo // Zinch // Ait N // Neco
    KDB // Salah // Neto
    Jesus // Kane

    Steele // Andreas // Colback // Archer

Interesting, you are the first I have seen attempt this and have KDB in your side. Nearly everyone has forgotten about him.

Starting Neco could be OK as long as Forrest do not get hammered and end up with minus numbers. Remember NF made a lot of signings and it will take a while to gel as well. Plus it will take Lingard time to get up to match speed. I doubt he will be playing as well as he did for the hammers at least in the first month or so.

Personally I would get Bailey instead of Neto which gives you .5 to play with. Plenty of decent 4.5m options. Maybe even double Wolves defence.

I think Dasilva is a much better option than Colback at 4.5m

But besides that I like your strategy. A little bit different, but not too wild.

I was on Bailey but with Jimi injured I feel Neto is an even better prospect than before.

Watching KDB against Bayern, he was pretty much side by side with Haaland.

Obviously this all goes out of the window when the Community Sheild starts

How does well does Neto play up front though? Plus with Jiminez injured it means he will likely perform worse with no focal point to play off?

When I think Wolves I automatically think - defenders or goalkeeper. That is where the real value is. I remember I owned Podence for a spell very frustrating to own in fpl.

McGinn has been named as the new Villa captain. My thoughts when Diego Carlos signed was that it would be hard to see someone as good as Konsa dropped when fit to fit him in, and that even though Mings was captain, I thought long-term out of him and Konsa it would be Mings that would have to move over out of those two. Looks like that might happen sooner than I thought

      Mings is absolute dog shite

It's been clear for ages that gerrard would sort out the spine which he has. Chambers, konsa and Diego are all way ahead of him. Every time someone suggested mings on here, I laughed. But he is captain they said. I laughed harder. Clueless

Do you think Ings is going to be phased out this season? because of Archer/Bailey/Buendia. The impression I get from reading what Villa fans are saying is Ings is a shadow of what he was. Plus he and Watkins are too similar to play together.

I am not a villa fan so I would take what I say with a massive truck of salt, but I am a gerrard fan and the reason i knew mings was on the outs was because gerrard said he would improve the spine and then signed a cb and dm. I wouldn't focus on villa attacking assets. I think they are going to be very hard to beat and will win a lot of games by the odd goal. He likes his fullback to attack as he copies klopp which makes cash the only villa player I will consider. I don't expect them to be high scorers with the attacking players they have now. Gerrard will sort that out next season.

Right I see so you think Gerrard is setting Villa up to be Liverpool lite. I have two Villa players cash and Bailey. Watched a few Villa preseason highlights. I think there seems to be some fpl value there I think based on fixtures/preseason form and past PL performances.

I followed him at rangers and I follow him at villa. He works on defence first. Only after a full season and three transfer windows did He get the gers attack free flowing. Full back Tavernier played very similar to trent and robbo. Gerrard has said that Bailey has surprised him this pre season and may play his way into the starting line up. My question is, how long before he is dropped if he starts slow and what do you do at that price point? Would you start another fpl player in gw 1 if the manager implied he had only just entered his first team thoughts? I played 3 games for my school first team before the manager wisened up. Not sure I buy this bailey hype

The way I Iook at the Bailey one is that he should at least start v Bournemouth a promoted side. Plus his pace causes chaos against most teams as it is.

Even if he is dropped with the five sub rule Bailey guaranteed an impact sub appearance against tired legs. After the first three games I plan to sell him or bench him.

Last season Gerrard started Bailey for a run of games then he got injured. Bailey is also an easy switch to Dewsbury-Hall or even Dasilva. That is how I see it anyway.

Looking at Harrison as an initial pick over the likes of Neto and Martinelli, he's nailed, on set-pieces, great fixtures for the foreseeable and finished last season strongly under the new manager.

TAA is the more “exiting” pick by far. I know logic should always take priority over emotions but at the end of the day we play the game to have fun and VVD doesn’t give you what Trent does in that sense.

    GK - Ramsdale

    ATT - Kane, Jesus

Bench - Olsen, Neco W, Patterson, S Greenwood

        Thanks HM2.

My personal opinion is that Cancelo had a worldie last season and might not fetch as many points as he did previously. He doesn't take set pieces and whilst his attacking instincts are his prowess, the way City play I feel will limit him. On the other hand, I like Saka and Trippier as they take a host of set pieces and thus contention for bonus points. I do like Martinelli (being an Arsenal fan) but I feel a slight drop in form and he'd be rotating with ESR. For those reasons I've gone with the current mid.

In my team, Jesus, Bailey and Dalot are the only ones who probably are not on set piece duty - the rest I think are nailed on set pieces and importantly all of them will start if pre-season is anything to go by. I'm happy to stick with most for a while barring injury but I reckon I might have to consider back-ups for Dalot and Bailey should they not fire as hoped. My thought process is to swap Ramsdale with a De Gea or a Mendy and bring in Tomiyasu after the first few game weeks so I retain Man Utd/Arsenal defence. And as for Bailey at 5m, my back up would be Dewsbury Hall. Only reason Bailey starts ahead is because he plays in the front 3.

curious as why you say the way city play him, when i watch city they are generally encamped in their opponents half and cancelo spends more time in their third than his own, borderline essential imo..

I meant unlike the type of TAA who whips crosses in each and every game - just my opinion though. Cancelo is a top player, no doubt but I just feel at 7mil, I'm tempted to look elsewhere, just my opinion.

For the start of the season I'm just not convinced that Tuchel has a handle over the defensive players he needs. Lots of churn, with even their captain (Azpi) probably leaving to Barca. So I think they need to find their feet with the right combo of players and might lose out on clean sheets initially. Trippier has been in great form pre-season, nailed on starter and crucially big on set-plays. I would personally go Trippier start of the season and reassses after a few games - what's more I save 1m which I can use elsewhere.

Neto is a wait and watch for me albeit he's doing well in pre season. Other options at the 5-5.5m are Bailey, Gordon, Dewbury Hall. I like them all!

worth a try ,not much to go wrong at 5.5 ,with jimi out possibly even more advanced, idk much about wolves a fan might be able to reveal if he might be on pennos as well ...

People getting nervous about Neto because Jimi is out now. But then, no one had Jimi in their team. I get the structure, price point, etc arguments about Jimi and so on but at 5.5, Bailey in the wings and an easy swap if he proves himself, a playable bench, Neto poss OOP and my expectation that most of his points will come from himself, Im sticking for now.

I tend to agree. He might start once in a while, but even off the bench, I fancy him. 5 subs could see him coming on the entire second half, even. Plenty of time for a hattrick!

Yes! I've had them both at times, including in my current unsaved draft along with Martinelli. I also love ESR but he's not going to be one to start the season with it seems.

Nketiah has been in fine form however as some have said, I don't think he will start given the way Arteta sets out his team. Odegaard is a shrewd purchase IMO!

      1. Deulofail

Players like Martinelli, Darwin, Grealish, Mahrez could also be benched some or most weeks, but they're still popular! I'll probably go for Odegaard or neither, but I'd like to put some faith in Eddie. May still do given his form, especially if there's any more news of Jesus niggles

I think it is fine there will be a lot of similar teams so you should do OK if the people who obsess about these things are correct!

I like the patterson pick but if Everton get a few hammerings early on his price could drop. As price drop is not based on ownership but percentage of transfers out.

Unless Darwin Nunez starts and impresses in the CS, I'm going without Salah. For as good as Diaz and Firmino are, it's hard to see him collecting as many points in a team that doesn't contain Mané.

Fair enough as long as you are confident in your alternative combinations. But it is likely Nunez will be eased into the Premier League to help him get acclimatised.
