Who were the top-scoring players in SPITCH last season?

Sponsored by SPITCH

Following on from our introduction to SPITCH, the brand new fantasy football manager game, it’s time to look more closely at the scoring system and at how last season would have played out.

GET STARTED WITH SPITCH

WHAT’S SPITCH?

If you’re new to SPITCH, the best way we could describe it is a Fantasy game where you have a Free Hit chip to play every week.

As only your best five matchdays throughout the season are counted, even starting in April still actually gives you a chance of succeeding!

And if you forget to update your team one week, your season won’t be derailed as it would be in FPL.

The free-to-play seasonal game has a £2,500 prize pool, while there are other ways to get involved with the game too.

HOW TO PLAY SPITCH

Until now, SPITCH has focused exclusively on the three ‘Classic’ versions of individual matchdays but they are about to debut two longer-term ‘Season’ options for the 2022/23 campaign – one of which is free.

As with Fantasy Premier League (FPL), managers commit to a formation and have a budget to buy players for their line-up, in the quest to score points and win prizes.

But unlike FPL, managers can actually go under or over their budget – this will determine how many positive or negative points they begin the round with.

Other differences include the ability to pick up to nine players from the same club, being allowed to alter teams mid-matchday and the ‘Safety Net’ feature that automatically replaces non-starters with a similarly-priced teammate. Oh, and there are no captains within season mode – so you can forget about ‘effective ownership’!

SCORING SYSTEM

There are many sources of points in the more sophisticated scoring system, with defensive midfielders potentially even more desirable than attackers – as we’ll see in the Manchester City score round-up below:

SPITCH intro 5

LAST SEASON’S POINTS

Here are the best XIs of last season’s top six, based on average points and the players currently at their disposal.

The best of the rest are as follows:

  • GK: David Raya (232), Illan Meslier (213), Robert Sanchez (212)
  • DEF: Lewis Dunk (278), Shane Duffy (273), Ethan Pinnock (253), Marc Guehi (251)
  • MID: Youri Tielemans (278), James Ward-Prowse (274), Declan Rice (248)
  • FOR: Jarrod Bowen (235), Ivan Toney (232)

Erling Haaland arrives in England with a mega average of 354 points, with his 22 Bundesliga goals coming from only 34 shots.

Overall, Joao Cancelo accumulated the most points (12,026), followed by Son Heung-min (11,078) and Mohamed Salah (10,970). The Liverpool man totalled the most goalshots (82), ahead of Harry Kane‘s 73.

Winning duels gains 15 points for a player and the most successful at these were Ivan Toney (254), John McGinn (230) and Tomas Soucek (228), with fouls regularly losing 15 points for Conor Gallagher (60), Joelinton (60) and Emmanuel Dennis (56).

There must be a lot of salty managers from last season who had underwhelming BB's and are using it for GW1 this year just to get rid of it - I really don't understand that. With the 3rd WC this year, you'll be able to restructure your squad to at least bring in some productive fodder if you don't want to have much cash on the bench. To start the season with money on the bench seems a waste and we really don't know which bargain players are going to be productive. Why not save for later?

Can someone give the counter argument?

      1. Cheeky Onion

That's what it seems like. For me, picking a team with 15 starting players on GW1 is going to add stress trying to restructure the team for GW2

You can't wildcard and bench boost in the same GW, so the only times when you have a free hand and can BB are now and after the World Cup.

I hate having non-playing or dirt cheap bench fodder. I feel like it's not making the most of the format, especially when every man and his dog have Neco, Andreas and Greenwood. So I'll always try to pick 15 players who are nigh on guaranteed starters and who have enough quality that when the fixtures align they'll be in my starting line-up too. Therefore I'm pretty close to a BB line-up anyway.

      1. Cheeky Onion
        • 6 Years

That's fair enough - what's your bench looking like for GW1 out of curiosity?

It happens every year and then people forget that it did. It’s a very popular strategy as it’s such a poor chip.

100% horse, an incredibly overrated chip by mIMO managers imo. Hope all is well and best of luck for the new season!

I hadn't noticed that was such a popular strategy in previous seasons. I agree it's the least valuable chip of the bunch, but it does have some value. Can bank you 20 points if you get lucky or play it right

That's twice you posted this in the past 15mins. How about it's a free 'game' (fun you know and all that jazz) and people can play it how they like and not be sucked into the content creators guidebook.

      1. Cheeky Onion
        • 6 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Was bottomed on previous article. Yes, people can play as they like. Just looking for the reasoning as to why they'd take that route

        1. jia you
          • 7 Years
          1 year, 8 months ago

It's the fact you can use GW1 as a free FH chip with the added bonus of a bench boost on top. Then start afresh with a WC in GW2/3.
You then have a free run at the season concentrating primarily on your first XI.
On the build up to DGWs you don't need to worry about your bench and can use the second half of season wildcard anytime you like...it can have more benefit using it early imo (ie don't need to worry about holding it for just before a DGW BB for example).
A DGW BB often doesn't work out very well and points are often lost in the GWs surrounding it in being unable to get players that you want in your first XI.

Well I think most who are considering it will be WCing early, so there won't be money on the bench for many extra GWs, if any at all. In that, this is a benefit of doing it. You'll likely carry a strong bench for longer if playing it later in the season, or will otherwise need to strategise around this concern.

Not personally interested in BB GW1 this season, though, as a BB team this week doesn't look much better than a strong XI.

      1. Cheeky Onion
        • 6 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Yeah that's a good way to look at it. I don't think I'll plan on strengthening my bench too much unless we get the Covid fiasco we had last year. But if we confirm players like Ward, Neco, Andreas etc. are playing regularly and getting the odd haul you can still squeeze a few points out of it without restructuring the squad

    8. DantheManinaPan
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I don't think it's best to play it in GW1 at all. Wait until there are clear cheap options who have been playing well with good fixtures.

But I also don't think trying to squeeze it into a DGW is the best play either. It can easily force many -4s more than it's worth to get a full 15, and puts too much emphasis on a single week at the expense of others.

Instead I'd just keep an eye out for a good opportunity later in the season when the stars align and the majority of your bench has a good fixture and your bench has no non-playing fodder in it. I've had decent success with this over the last few seasons.

      1. jia you
        • 7 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

That's probably the best approach (a happy middle ground).
I often BB in GW1 trying to get off to a fast start. I often get bored playing seriously in a season when I have a very slow start and don't wildcard in time to fix it.
I think I'll BB in GW1 this season and WC straight afterwards. Not for everyone but I think I can go without City and Arsenal assets for example as they both have reasonably tough fixtures in GW1 but great fixtures afterwards.
Just an effort to get a good start and try to build from there.
Worst case is it's the best GW to flop if it does happen with 37 GWs remaining, glass half full haha.
        GL for the second!

    Here's one for you...
Both players starting each week in a 442.
    Would you go:
    A) Raya & Neto
    B) Mendy & Bailey
    C) Ederson & Andreas

NB, C) would mean triple City at the back - but I'm ok with that as I plan to start 'aggressively' regardless.
    Rest of team would be:

    xxx
    TAA/Robbo/Cancelo/Walker
    Salah/Saka/Martinelli/xxx
    Kane/Jesus

(Ward//Neco/Archer/Andreas (except for in option C - where I'd have Andreas in the XI and Dasilva on the bench))

Can you tell I have the 'last week jitters'!?!

Hence why Mendy - I'd prefer Rambo, but can't do it - and think that Martinelli is best sub-£6.5m, Saka is best £8.0m and Jesus is simply non-negotiable.

Ramsdale to 4.5 and use the 0.5m on outfield players. Likely will want triple arsenal attack later as well

It’s just a way of getting a city player in your team.
I personally want to see how the Chelsea defence line up and look, but there should be great value in them.

Any Wolves fans about? How are you feeling going into the season?

Neto and Ait-Nouri are very tempting at the price but I'm finding it very hard to look past the abysmal end to last season, the almost complete lack on reinforcement in the summer AND Jimenez being out injured.

Yeah. All the stats I want are in the members area here. If you're looking for info on players new to the league or something like that, then transfermarkt / whoscored are pretty useful

Thoughts on NUFC Almiron based on his preseason form to play for 8 GWS straight

    1. DonProvolone

He has delivered in pre-season and he is an AM.
However, he's been with Newcastle since January of 2019.
And he has contributed only 9 goals and 3 assists in 110 games.

I trust this stat more than his pre-season form.

All three of them cost 5m each in the league that I am playing (Greece).
Which one from the starting eleven would you try to upgrade with the extra 0,5m?
