FPL team guides: Manchester United – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

We continue our team-by-team guides with Manchester United, seeing what their players have to offer.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series.

It was a disappointing follow-up to Manchester United’s second-placed finish of 2020/21. Fans were back in stadiums again, big money had been spent on Jadon Sancho (£7.5m) whilst Cristiano Ronaldo (£10.5m) returned to the club after 12 years away.

Yet manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left in November, following a 4-1 defeat at newly-promoted Watford, as the Red Devils made it five seasons without a trophy.

Under the stewardship of Solskjaer, caretaker Michael Carrick and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, their underlying attacking stats roughly match their sixth-placed ranking, although their 57 goals were bested by seven other teams.

Highlights included the opening day 5-1 win over Leeds United, where Bruno Fernandes (£10.0m) netted a hat-trick, and entertaining 3-2 home wins over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur – the latter with Ronaldo’s own set of three.

The 37-year-old finished as top scorer with 18 league goals but has barely featured in friendlies, as reports continue to insist that he wants to leave the club immediately.

However, it hasn’t clouded a promising pre-season under new boss Erik ten Hag. Announced with several weeks of 2021/22 to go, he arrived from Ajax with an air of confidence and time to plan a new era for this underachieving giant.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded5713th
Clean sheets8=12th
Shots conceded51112th
Shots in the box conceded32511th
Shots on target conceded18014th
Big chances conceded7513th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)61.3011th

A huge problem for ten Hag to fix is the Man United defence. Ranking in the lower mid-table for allowing attempts, big chances and shots on target, their eight clean sheets were fewer than new boys Brentford and relegated Burnley, worsened only by four others.

Furthermore, there were an embarrassing six occasions where they conceded at least four goals – including against Manchester City, both times versus Liverpool and a May meltdown at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Goalkeeper David De Gea (£5.0m) made the third-most saves and played all 38 matches. Fernandes was the only other to exceed 28 starts.

From an FPL perspective, only Watford totalled fewer defensive goals, with solitary contributions from Harry Maguire (£5.0m) and Raphael Varane (£5.0m). Assists were better, thanks to a combined seven from left-backs Alex Telles (£5.0m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m).

OPENING FIXTURES

The tougher fixtures against last season’s top five are spread out fairly evenly throughout the early months, meaning ten Hag’s side never gets a truly good or bad run of fixtures.

This is backed by our Season Ticker, which ranks fixtures for both difficulty and relative difficulty. The latter constantly keeps Man United as sixth-best for the opening four, six, eight and ten encounters.

Gameweek 1 can see them gain revenge on Brighton for the 4-0 loss, with Liverpool soon back to attempt another 5-0.

    Bailey Vs Neto ?

Is Neto worth the extra 0.5?

I prefer Neto. Bailey looks like a headache in the future as I think you'll definitely want to transfer him out due to fixtures and likely rotation. His first couple of fixtures are a big plus though so he could haul

Bailey's place in the team is far more precarious than Neto's. I could see him losing his place and struggling to get it back.
Everything Wolves will do, which admittedly may be very little, should involve Neto at some point.
So Bailey could be a 5,2,5,1,0,0 sort of scorer, whereas Neto could be a 3,3,3,3,3.
Pick one and run with it. They won't be far apart.

    I'm not moving on this:

    Ward
    Trent, Robertson, Cancelo
    Salah (C), Maddison, Mount, Martinelli
    Jesus, Wilson, Bamford
    (Iversen, N.Williams, Patterson, Andreas)

Bamford is a placeholder for 6m-7.5m strikers that emerge.
Salah always captain. Don't need Haaland or Kane.

They rotate really well over the first 5 or so games. First benching will be Dewsbury-Hall, Martinelli and Gabriel - the latter two will play the second game.

            GW1 captain Son, GW2 Haaland

Don't think either have scored a goal in years! Saliba can only play RCB while White can rotate to RB for Europe so I see him more likely to be rotated with Tommy.

I actually have Son over Salah in my team - either way I think they'll score similarly

It was mainly James that swung it to A

They don't have him yet. Check Brighton Twitter

How does having him hurt James though? I thought it would help

I think I misunderstood you. I'm having similar thoughts now as well. James is starting to look very attractive. A bit annoying as I was starting to feel fairly set on my team

Replace Sanchez and Son with Kane and Ramsdale and you'll have my team. So the second one

Similar dilemma, leaning towards 3 premiums. Thing I don't like about the 2nd team is only 2 Liverpool players.

Pretty much comes down to Robbo, Cancelo, Mount v James, Walker, Haaland for me.

Think I've settled with this draft but feel free to roast:

    Ward (Ramsdale*)
Trent, James, Cancelo, Zinchenko (N Williams)
    Salah, Diaz, Rashford, Neto (Pereira)
    Haaland, Jesus (Greenwood)

*For first game as don't feel comfortable with double Arsenal defence away against Palace

Anybody else with any money itb?

I have 2.5 currently. I will probably find a way to spend it but I'm liking the appeal of having some money to make upgrades easier with my first few transfers when it becomes a bit clearer who the early bandwagons are etc.

I’d say Trent is the most essential player in the game and not clear whether malacia is first choice.

If set on threemium I think you need to downgrade Rashford or Martinelli to bench fodder, play Bailey and upgrade your defence. If you aren’t happy playing Bailey against Bournemouth there’s no point spending the extra 0.5 on him.
