The Scout Squad’s best players for FPL Gameweek 2

In our weekly series, Fantasy Football Scout contributors Sam, Neale, Tom and Az debate the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards for the upcoming Gameweek.

Six FPL players have been given full backing by all four of our panel, with Erling Haaland (£11.6m) unsurprisingly among the consensus selections.

There’s no Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea representation at all, however, with those two clubs meeting in a tough-to-call clash at Stamford Bridge this Sunday.

ABOUT THE SCOUT SQUAD

Everything you ever wanted to know about the FPL Bonus Point System - part one

In this series, our four resident Fantasy Football Scout contributors each propose an 18-man squad of Fantasy players with the focus solely on the upcoming Gameweek.

Their selections serve as a long list for the Scout Picks, as the players nominated will then be narrowed down to a squad of 15 (with the starting XI not exceeding a total cost of £83.0m) for our final weekly selection ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Each writer must meet the following requirements:

  • At least one sub-£5.0m goalkeeper
  • At least one sub-£5.0m defender
  • At least one sub-£6.0m midfielder
  • At least one sub-£7.0m forward
  • No more than three players from the same club

    A) Dunk (NEW)
    B) Pereria (wol)
    C) Neco (WHU)

    Captian:
    1) Salah v CRY (have TAA + Robbo)
    2) Haaland v BOU (Have Cancelo)

So 1 point total this season for a 4.0 Leicester keeper? Sounds about right.

The new goalie signing is third choice. Actually, this transfer is a good news, because they are surely not going to add a fourth keeper -- meaning Ward will remain the first choice for the season.

DaSilva looked good for the time he was on the pitch. Reed, Colback, Lavia played 90 minutes. Colback will definitely not keep the starting spot, Lavia may claim a starting spot. No idea about Reed (Fulham).

Planning on doing Kane + Cash > Haaland + Dunk

    A) Do it now, or wait til presser tomorrow and risk Haaland rising again

    B) Talk me into/out of it

I like Tottenham's fixtures after this week, so If I ship Kane, will look to get Kulu in. Kane can be frustrating to watch when he constantly drops deep and not in the box when the final ball comes in. Despite the doom and gloom over Villa after last week, I don't mind having Cash this week. Will likely be shipping him by GW4, so the most practical hit on my team to take.

      1) Going without Cancelo.
      2) Unpopular opinion, but Jesus may become an issue: Not on penalties, not enough goals, lots of tracking back. Although it would be an easy switch to Mitrovic / Wilson.

    3. Nanook

Solid team, nice balance. No glaring issues. Quite like it.

Although I see the appeal, I’d be tempted to move Aaronson to a 4.5/Dasilva.

Then upgrade Castagne and Williams to Trippier and Dunk. Both of these defenders are nailed, play for better defensive teams, and also offer attacking threat plus set piece involvements. Play a 4-3-3 with an ability to avoid poor fixtures for defensive assists and account for rotation and injuries in your squad. Especially with an early wildcard.

In continuation of EO & 'the right (optimal) way to play FPL' debated on BlackBox yesterday I am curious to hear which decision you've made up to this point, that brings you joy going forward in FPL this season.

For instance this is the first time, that I went with three attacking players from the same team (Martinelli, Saka & Jesus) from the get-go.
I know it's not for everyone, but I feel great going forward, and fingers crossed the Gunners will score a minimum of two goals every game up until the IB.

      1) First time starting with 2 defenders from the same team - Robertson and Trent.
      2) Ignoring Jesus - the highest owned player. This decision, I think, will help me get a much better rank this year because there will be cheaper players who will outscore Jesus. For week 1, it was Wilson for me. Feeling extremely confident that I will always get players to outscore Jesus.

      1. Salarrivederci
        • 8 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Nice one with Wilson, and sounds like a fun approach to this season. Still think he will come good. That attacking display from the Gunners looks more than decent this year!

Also got the double Liverpool defense, but I find it a bit more painful/nervewracking!

      2. Gross Blank Point
        • 3 Years

I've think the likes of Toney or Bamford will keep up with Jesus scoring wise, save a few million.

        1. banskt
          • 10 Years
          1 year, 8 months ago

Exactly. Its maximum 150-160 points from Jesus. Think the cheaper forwards can do that for me. The extra money gives a boost elsewhere in the team.

Going with Mitrovic for GW2. 😉

          1. Salarrivederci
            • 8 Years
            1 year, 8 months ago

Aggressive transfer strategy on mid-priced attackers sound very fun 😉 !

Obviously I will/could be forced to part ways with Jesus if his price drops too much too quick, but I am looking (hoping) to be able to keep him til the IB.

So yes Wilson outscored him last week, and Mitrovic might (though I really hope does not) outscore Jesus this week. But you got to factor in the transfers into the equation if you chop and change every other week against players keeping Jesus for (let's say) 6 weeks in a row and spend the transfers elsewhere.

i went without Salah, i'm content with that decision as it allowed me to start with Nunez as my 3rd Pool player after TAA & Diaz, also only started with 1 premium which unfortunately was Kane, but who's now Haaland

      1. Salarrivederci
        • 8 Years
        1 year, 8 months ago

Was ever only without Salah in my BB GW1, and I think 1 premium this year is a different way to approach the start of the season.
GL next GW. If Nunez delivers again you're way ahead of the curve, and we will all soon be looking to bring him in.

cheers, well i had a terrible start thanks to capping Kane, Salah cappers got a 20pt head start on me, but i do actually really like my team with only 1 premium joined by the likes of Jesus and Nunez up front, so no need to panic (yet 😆 )

Playing Salah, Haaland, and Kane, the PK takers for 3 of the best teams. Also playing 3 Arsenal. It makes watching the City/Pool/Arsenal/Spurs matches fun and exciting for me. If Saka stays on PK duty might switch Jesus to Saka so I can have all 4 PK takers 🙂

      1. Salarrivederci
        • 8 Years

Ah yes. The good old 'get the penalty takers' approach. That also brings me joy playing FPL knowing I got those around!

Haaland was a bit lucky, but feels extra good going into GW2!

Really hoping for some penalties for the Gunners now owning Ward, Jesus, Saka & Martinelli 😀

What do you need to see from Darwin Nunez in the next few weeks to make you think he's a viable alternative to Salah?

Most of us are going to be WCing in the next few weeks and the team we build only has to last until GW16. Salah is so expensive that you can have Darwin & Diaz plus 1.5 left over for the same as Salah + 4.5 bench fodder.

The only games I think I'd be hiding behind the sofa for between then and now are 13 & 14 (Forest away; Leeds at home). And we can probably plan to get him back in for then.

Maybe. In the weeks where you don't captain him though (which may be the majority) and Liverpool still have a decentish fixture, you could get more points from Diaz, Nunez, and a 5.0 defender than you do with Salah, a 4.5 forward, and a 4.5 defender.

I'm not saying it's the way forward, but if they look nailed and decent Diaz & Nunez at those prices certainly beg the question.

Check his hest map vs Fulham. Check it again vs Palace.

This guy is going to park off in the opposition box. His stat from Fulham suggest the same.

i've seen enough already, the amount of chances Nunez gets means he's going to score a ton of goals, Nunez + 4m to spend elsewhere is a pretty big carrot to tempt you away from Mo, but that being said there is no reason why you can't squeeze in both

If I was going Salahless it would be TAA Robbo & Darwin. I currently have Robbo as my third pool.....so will Darwin out score Robbo? I have no idea at this point but will be monitoring for a potential switch to TAA Salah Darwin (get rid of Jesus).

I really like it. Why Patterson over Neco? Patterson could lose his place with Coady coming in? Dasilva could also lose his place with Brentford's new signing, so suddenly your bench is pretty thin, which might be costly when CL rotation kicks in for players like Darwin & Kulu. I would consider downgrading Tripps to a solid 4.5 and upgrading Patterson to another solid 4.5 so you've got a stronger bench

its mad how you identified the exact two areas of concern I had. I picked this team like 3am Sunday night or something, they were just space fillers as they got the most minutes. I cant lose trippier(nailed in all my drafts), I will get Nico ok, suggestions for dasilva?

I mean Mina and Godfrey are injured now. So he's there to play instead of them. Tarkowski and Holgate the other CBs probably. Coleman is a threat to Patterson but I'd still keep him over Neco Williams.

Go Ederson and James over Sanchez and Cancelo. Then it's perfection. Andreas first sub. That's the best bench u can have with fodders.

that's pretty good in fairness, but James and Chelsea looked bad last week though, and Cancelo basically plays as striker half the time. Going without Cancelo is scary, I like Chilwell more then James also. But you have tempted my mind.

        1. Zimo
          • 5 Years

Cancelo wasn't even close to an attacking return against West Ham. Don't be fooled by heat maps. He was basically playing DM. I've been saying this since preseason. Either he's going to be really wide with the wingers coming in to support Haaland where he might get a few assists from crosses or he's going to play this tucked DM where he won't get attacking returns as the 8s drive forward and he gets the assist of the assist. It's new tactics by Pep. Everything will go through Haaland. Cancelo's goal threat of last year is significantly diminished.

I really like that they've made the max limit for the premium keepers 5.5. They're finally an option this year. Wouldn't even consider at 6m.

Could always do Salah to Son and James to Cancelo as well. But they'll score around the same as well. Just depends who you're comfortable going without.

Mitro at 6.5 is a no brainer.

            Mate I’m seriously tempted to
Go for him over Mitro now, Brightons fixtures are reallly good

No one here will tell you to do that, its a gut move, its like capping Mitro, no one is gonna tell you thats a good idea. Some decisions only you can make, and those decisions define your team.

Yeah that’s absolutely right mate, I think il play safe by deadline and go for Mitro to be fair, Will look at Welbeck if he stays fit in a few weeks or so
