Moving Target

What can FPL managers expect from Graham Potter at Chelsea?

While the short-term uncertainty over fixtures leaves us unable to do much Fantasy Premier League (FPL) planning with any great conviction, our editorial content will slowly resume with some less Gameweek-focused articles.

Here we look at what Graham Potter’s appointment as Chelsea manager means for FPL managers, and which players could potentially thrive under their new boss.

Chelsea announced the appointment of Potter as their new head coach on Thursday, following the departure of Thomas Tuchel.

The 47-year-old led Brighton and Hove Albion to their highest-ever top-flight finish in 2021/22 and left the Seagulls in fourth in the Premier League table.

As things stand, Potter’s first match in charge is set to be the UEFA Champions League clash against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

THE HISTORY

Having come through the ranks at Birmingham City, Graham Potter went on to represent 12 different clubs across a 13-year playing career, including Stoke City, Southampton and West Bromwich Albion.

A few years after retiring, he began his coaching journey in Sweden with Ostersund’s, leading them from the fourth division to the top-flight, as well as winning the Swedish Cup and reaching the knock-out stages of the UEFA Europa League. The latter feat was especially impressive, given that they progressed from a group that included Athletic Bilbao and Hertha Berlin.

“When I started, we got attendances of 500 – now we’re playing in front of 30,000 at Hammarby and beating Gothenburg, who have competed in the Champions League before. It’s some difference to where we were a few years ago.” – Graham Potter

In 2018, Potter took over at Swansea City following their relegation from the Premier League. Although he could only guide them to a 10th-place finish in the Championship, his time in Wales was largely deemed a success, as he rebuilt a new, youthful side who hit their stride in the second half of the campaign. They also reached the FA Cup quarter-finals, where they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat to reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.

That was enough to earn a move to Brighton in 2019, who had recently dismissed Chris Hughton. However, it took a while to implement his ideas and philosophy, with 15th and 16th place finishes in his first two seasons at the club. Still, the owners kept faith and were rewarded in 2021/22, when Brighton finished ninth, the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish.

2022/23 began with a first-ever win at Old Trafford, while last week’s 5-2 win over Leicester City lifted Brighton to fourth, which is even more impressive given that they sold two of their best players – Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) and Yves Bissouma (£4.8m) – in the summer.

PLAYING STYLE

“We were in front of the best English manager right now. As a spectator, I like to watch these teams. I like watching Brighton play. I recognise it. When I was a football player, I would love to play in this team.” – Pep Guardiola on Graham Potter’s Brighton

At Brighton, Graham Potter would regularly change systems, shifting from back four to back three formations depending on the opponent. However, since the backend of last season, he has favoured a possession-based and fluid 3-4-2-1 (see below), which is a similar shape to Tuchel’s Chelsea.

He likes to use players who are comfortable in a number of different positions, like Pascal Gross (£6.0m), Alexis Mac Allister (£5.6m), Solly March (£5.0m) and Leandro Trossard (£6.5m).

Indeed, the latter was signed as a winger, but also played as a number 10, a false nine, a central midfielder and more recently as a hybrid wing-back/inside forward, a position he thrived in.

Of course, that doesn’t mean Potter will stick with a 3-4-2-1 at Chelsea, but regardless of the formation, the fundamentals remain the same – defend as a team, focus on shape, build from the back, press a lot and commit players forward.

“He’s a players’ manager. He’s a problem solver. Tactically, he’s incredible at making sure when you step onto the pitch, everyone knows what they’re doing. What he’ll bring to Chelsea is exactly that. He’s a very calm person, and if he wants you to do something on the pitch, he takes responsibility if it goes wrong. He’s never there to throw anybody under the bus.” – Former Swansea City winger Nathan Dyer

THE PROSPECTS

 1

At this stage, we can only speculate about how Graham Potter will set up his team. However, we will get to see Chelsea in action prior to the next FPL deadline, when they face RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.

The fixtures, meanwhile, are very good from Gameweeks 9 to 12.

Chelsea’s defence has really struggled under Tuchel this season, but it’s an area that Potter should be able to fix, given his impressive record at Brighton in the past two seasons (see below).

Indeed, the Seagulls have allowed just five goals in their six league games in 2022/23, and two they have conceded were own-goals. By contrast, Chelsea have already conceded on nine occasions.

Everyone will just say the GK that has the most points up till now (Pope).

Try to pick the keeper that will get the most points going forward.

Ticker suggests Palace keeper would be worth a shout, I went with Sanchez which has bombed out big time with the cancelled fixture and Potter legging it to Chelsea. As most have said Pope has the stats if I remember correctly from Blackbox.

Guaita is a great shout if you want to avoid the double up or want a 4.5. He has good FPL history if you ignore Roy's last season which featured an impossibly bad injury crisis.

Last time around he averaged 3.96 ppm and Palace are the fixture team from GW10 on. Should be a great mix of saves and cs if he stays fit - just need cover for 8.

I’d argue it is a big deal.

Elitism at its very finest, even more concerning considering it’s at the level of elite public schools whilst the premier league stops.

I don’t see how anyone can find entertainment in this report.

The point isn’t about elitism here, it’s about common sense. It was a nonsense to stop football being played this weekend regardless of what level. If some people played it then good for them, as with the professional cricket and rugby that was played. And they were able to give the Queen a mark of respect which wasn’t done with football.

There is a sense of "we are the elite, we make the rules, we don't follow the rules" a bit like old-Etonion Boris and lock-down rules.
The ironic thing in all of this is the people closest to the Queen, her immediate family, are if anything working harder in their public duties - so why was football banned?

I suppose it adds a new dimension to a somewhat flat FPL season so far, and gives those more strategic players a chance to claw back on a poor start

Not really though. The games being cancelled (the London ones) will include Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Brentford, Leicester and Tottenham. And I believe everyone and their dog has atleast 6 starting players from those teams combined. The only way to deal with this GW would be a FH, which I believe almost everyone will be using given the London fixtures are cancelled. So it doesn't really give any strategical advantage to anyone. Atleast for this GW.

True, and that's why I'm reluctant to use it. But it seems many can't get to 7/8 players without hits let alone 11 if the London + Brighton fixtures are cancelled.

The pool of players if London + Brighton fixtures are cancelled are very limited and you probably wouldn’t get much more out of 11 than you would say 7

Those games include some of the most highly owned players though. James, Cucu, Toney, Jesus, Arsenal defense, Salah, TAA, Robbo. Some premium differentials people have owned to claw back like Sterling, Kane, Son are in there too. It's tricky imo.

3 City, 3 Newcastle, Mitrovic, Ward-Prowse, United mid and (Neco, Andreas): there's the 11 that may help you claw back. Bench 1 Chelsea, 2 Arsenal.

Mangers with zero Liverpool (including me) may get the best out of GW8 if London games are cancelled. Also sold Jesus before GW7 in case the Arsenal game is cancelled.

So yes, there are managers who are trying to claw back, based on these cancellations.

You're a rare breed in that scenario, and so am I, as I have only Salah from Liverpool, zero Chelsea and not much from the Tottenham game bar Ward. But I believe it's still a bit of an issue though. Can't see managers getting ground breaking points from the other fixtures to really make it a game changing week.

4 solid extra players (replacement of those Pool players are not bench warmers) or a saved FH. Thinks that's around 20-30 points we are talking about.

But instead of rewarding long-term planning and patience (saving FT till the deadline), the FPL towers are providing cheat codes to remove hits. I neither get the price rises nor the point buffer from no-hits. I hate that FPL keeps changing rules after the start of the game.

I understand, but I think they should have also frozen the time of announcement so that hits could not be reversed using FH. I deliberately missed price rises just because I know unforeseen things can happen in life and football. When that unforeseen thing do actually happen, patient managers are not rewarded. I don't see any logic in there.

Key word is "unforeseen". No games was unforeseen and only apparent in hindsight. Unforeseen things could be many: player injury or a meteorite strike. No rewards waiting for unforeseen things.

For those with their early WC left, when are you thinking of using it?

Let's pretend these 2 scenarios could happen.

    1) All games get played in GW8 or just the Brighton game is off?
    2) The 3 London games (Spurs, Chelsea and Brentford home games + Brighton is off)

I'll have 10 with a -4, but the team will be a bit sketchy. Might have to use the FH. But really don't want to use it this week as there's not much gain to be had from the other fixtures. Would be swell if FPL provides us with an extra FH if 2 happens.

I think they meant it is valuable in double game week or a suitable blank gameweek. I suppose they think that it is not much valuable in a regular gameweek because there's not much potential point gain opportunity; and I agree with them.

You must compare it to a wildcard though.

Is a single gw free hit worth more than a wildcard played early when you don't need too?

How many players already regret playing their wildcards?

                  Wildcard to what though?

                  The template remains strong.

Most attempts to move off it have already backfired.

I have just sold Jesus too so I am sure that will bite me in the but too.

I would love to hear your amazing plan to utilize fixture swings to get rid of haaland and martnielli and the like. For who?

Then there is the small problem of liverpool getting the break they needed to reinvent what is already the third best attack in the league and I would guess will only get better.

I have no idea who I would wildcard in right now. You?

For my team, the worst case scenario (lowest upside) is if the City game is cancelled. I have Cancelo, KDB and Haaland. If it happens, I have to use 2FTs and a hit to sort it out.

Uh, where was I crying for another free hit? If I choose to use it, it'll be because I am some way off fielding XI, feel I can bring in players with a big upside (hence the Spurs game being important) and because I am happy with my current team. Obviously I don't want to have to use it, but that's why it's my worst case scenario

People may use their one FH if all London games called off etc. Would put them saving the FH for later in the season, in a bigger advantage.

I think if all the London games don't go ahead you just field as many as you can and hope for the best I think. I don't see the point in wildcarding without players from the blanking teams, nor do I think there's enough upside to justify free hitting

Correct, the biggest fixtures if London games do not go ahead will be from Fulham Mitro, City assets and Newcastle Pope and Trippier.

I am not planning on having Villa, Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester or even Spurs assets for GW9.

GW8 is likely to be one of those GW's where you are either lucky or unhappy.
