The pros and cons of a Gameweek 8 Wildcard

With three matches postponed due to events surrounding The Queen’s funeral, Gameweek 8 presents an opportunity for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to Wildcard.

A quick read through the site comments reveals that a number of us are contemplating activating the chip this week.

In this article, we’ll weigh up the pros and cons of playing a Wildcard in Gameweek 8.

As ever, whether Gameweek 8 is the ‘right’ moment to Wildcard will depend much on the make-up of your FPL squad, but we’ll try and outline a few of the more general advantages and disadvantages here.

GAMEWEEK 8 WILDCARD: THE PROS

Bowen marks return with seventh FPL double-digit haul of 2021/22
  • If you are down to five or six starters in Gameweek 8 following Monday’s announcement, a Wildcard is probably quite appealing. Even more so if you are having to turn to players like Danny Ward (£4.0m) and Cameron Archer (£4.4m) in your starting XI. By activating the chip now, you can ensure you have at least XI Gameweek 8 players without needing to take hits.
  • A Gameweek 8 Wildcard means that you can jump on key fixture swings for players like Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m), Jarrod Bowen (£8.1m) and Kieran Trippier (£5.3m), arguably at the optimal time. Knowing that their fixtures improve soon, you could also bench someone like James Maddison (£7.9m) or Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m). This could allow you to get ahead of the curve and take advantage of some particular tasty fixtures, potentially before the masses bring the same players in ahead of Gameweek 9.

Above: Gameweek 8-16 fixtures, sorted by difficulty

  • Teams like Brighton and Hove Albion, Liverpool and Arsenal all feature at the wrong end of the above table for fixture difficulty from Gameweeks 8-16, which does suggest now might be a good time to move on from their assets. For example, losing Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.2m) or Son Heung-min (£11.7m) this week, then bringing the Egyptian back in Gameweek 12 for West Ham United (h), is something you might consider on a Wildcard.
  • If you were planning a Gameweek 9 Wildcard, it might make sense to press the button now, especially if the team you are building is similar. If it is largely the same, why not go a week early and avoid taking any hits?
  • We have unlimited transfers during the World Cup, so using a Wildcard now feels fine, given that the latest you can use it is Gameweek 16 anyway.

Above: A potential Gameweek 8 Wildcard squad

GAMEWEEK 8 WILDCARD: THE CONS

FPL pre-season: Jesus hat-trick and Saka on pens
  • If you can field at least 10 players in Gameweek 8, perhaps with just one -4 hit, it might be better to use transfers and save the Wildcard chip, especially if you can easily get to highly-owned assets like Erling Haaland (£12.0m), Joao Cancelo (£7.1m), Mitrovic and Trippier. Given that cheap bench options like Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) and Neco Williams (£4.1m) are also playable in Gameweek 8, this scenario will be possible for some managers.
  • If you Wildcard in Gameweek 8, you essentially have to build a squad with only three players from Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Leeds United, Brighton and Crystal Palace. That might mean assets like Marcus Rashford (£6.3m) and Pascal Gross (£6.0m) need to be sold, despite starting the season strongly, as well as players like Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m), Reece James (£6.0m) and Salah.
  • By saving your Wildcard for the international break (Gameweek 9), you can include some of those players listed above, whilst also reacting to any injuries that may occur. You also have additional time to tinker, given the two-week break. Gameweeks 12/13 are other potential times to use the Wildcard.

Above: Gameweek 12-16 fixtures, sorted by difficulty

  • This isn’t a huge issue in the grand scheme of things, but it is worth mentioning. If you already have two free transfers banked, you will obviously lose one if you play your Wildcard this week, as you can’t roll one over to Gameweek 9.

How do i sort the fixture ticker by difficulty?

Become a member and go to the Member's area. I think it was only open to everyone for one season, but not sure about that.

You can still sort by difficult for each GW by clicking on the GW at the top of the table, though

You can't this season unless you're a member.
Can sort for a single GW.

Is this a good GW9 WC? If not, gonna wait till GW13 😀

    5.0
    Cancelo James Trippier (Patterson Neco)
    KDB Sterling Maddison ASM Paqueta
    Haaland Mitrovic (4.4)

Sterling can be downgraded before World Cup to fund Darwin, potentially/ Cancelo could become Chilwell or Trent somewhen down the line.

Can do over ASM if I keep Ward/Iversen in goal, though ASM looks to be potentially great value. Not sure I need all those CIty assets actually. I can do this with 3.9 still ITB... 😀

        Pope (Iversen)
        Chilwell James Trippier (Patterson Neco)
        Zaha Sterling Maddison ASM Bowen
        Haaland Mitrovic (4.4)

You’d also need to see how Asm is out for. Looks like a few weeks yet. I’d downgrade the two lower priced mids and bring in isak or Toney instead of archer

That's true, but we might have a good idea by the time this WC comes into effect on 1 October. Will consider Isak if I do WC though, thanks

I know what you mean, but if Leicester would manage to score the odds are high that Maddison will be involved. Perisic on the other hand can also be involved in Spurs goals, especially if Son starts finding him in the box XD, so he’s a good pick regardless of possibly losing a clean sheet.

I like this idea, I’m thinking of captaining Kane this week as well. My team is very similar to yours, but I have Foden instead of Bowen as I think he brings equal value compared to KDBs higher price tag.

Not understanding all the love for Bowen in wild card draughts. He’s been pretty anonymous this season and some articles I read from West Ham forums thinks he could be dropped. ASM is injured currently and no definitive date of a return. Can you squeeze Asm up to Zaha?

      1. House Frey Wedding Planner

With Bowen it's attacking the fixtures with the hope that he'll find form. He started slowly last season before coming into his own around this time last year

If he still looks poor or gets dropped he's an easy transfer to Zaha when his fixture run starts in gw10

Pretty much the same as my WC team except I have Dier over Perisic. The rotation risk with Perisic is too great for me.

there was the carabao cup tie being postponed as the other alternative. Postponing another city league fixture is prob something the premier league will want to avoid as they will most likely go far in all competitions so will have less space than most teams, to play a rearranged fixture

Very torn on -4 vs WC. What you think?

    A. -4 to field 11 (inc Ward, Neco & Andreas)
    B. WC

    Ward

Neco Cancelo Trippier

Martinelli Andreas

Haaland Jesus

    OFF;
Sanchez, TAA, James, Diaz, Salah, Gross, Archer

Sort of agree but then with a -4 I get this team, which isn’t too far off a WC, what you think? Keeper the big issue annoyingly

        Ward

        Neco Cancelo Trippier

Son Gordon Martinelli Andreas
Haaland Jesus Mitro/Isak
        (Sanchez, TAA, James, Gross)

Is Sanchez > Pope worth a -4 this week?

I would play Ward otherwise but this is a hit that looks like it just pays off easily and I get a price rise on Pope who I will want long term.

    1. Athletic Nasherbo

I'm planning to WC in 9 so if it doesn't pay off immediately probably not worth but the fixture swing this week is as good as it gets plus Pope has bonus potential and the price swing.

It's a fairly tight call. I'll probably do it though.

Likely gains you 1-2pts & 0.1m. Don't imagine Pope will be in the bonus v BOU

What’s the best site to plug a team in and run through future GWs with it? Thanks

I've got 9 playing this weekend, though it's basically 7 since two of them are Archer and KDH. 2.4 itb and 2FT.

    Would you guys go for:

    A) TAA, Salah and Gross - Schar, Son, KDB (-4)
    B) Archer and Salah - Kane and Bowen
    C) Wildcard

Been leaning towards A to get 10 playing then WC next week.

    I'm thinking Wildcard of:

    Pope / Ward
    Schar Saliba Trippier Coufal (Fofana)
Kulusevski Bernardo Martinelli (Luiz Diaz Rashford)
    Kane Haaland Jesus

Then potenitally swapping Schar/Coufal/Fofana for Dalot/Malacia dependant on form & results.

    Thoughts?

    GW8 WC - thoughts?

    Pope
    Cancelo, Trippier, Coufal
    Son, Bowen, Martinelli, Andreas
    Haaland, Isak, Mitrovic

    Iversen, Patterson, Zaha, James

1.6 ITB. Likely Son > KDB next week. Saving a transfer on Zaha. Coufal seems a safer bet than Emerson.

Template as f*** wildcard but happy enough.

    Pope
    Cancelo Perisic Trippier
    KDB Madisson Bowen Martinelli
    Isak Haaland Mitrovic

    Ward Andreas Neco Patterson

1.3m itb, can make these transfers for future easily

    KDB -> Salah
Madisson / Bowen -> Zaha / Diaz etc
    Perisic -> James

I've not seen any with Jesus and Martinelli. Scroll through a few pages and see.

keeping Martinelli, he's the best asset in his price range

Removing Jesus.... So many good options for forward spot. Martinelli cheaper and keeping up

The consensus seems to be everyone removing Jesus. I’m not too sure. Arsenal are still going to be strong attacking and he’s in the thick of it for both goals and assists. Yes the fixtures turn but he’s surely capable of hauls imo. As for Martinelli I’d keep he’s best value in the game at that price

Was gonna WC in GW9 but if l do, this week l am on minimum -4 to get an eleven including Ward.

Pope without a hit is probably worth doing it now, right?

Perisic is supposed to be very attacking mind, but checking his attacking stats very poor, no where near xG xA, shots, cross, chance create...

Isn't his xA pretty good? Understat and fbref both have him around 0.45 per 90. I feel his problem is more that at 5.6m you want a defender that's going to start. Spurs also have low xGA so a good chance of a clean sheet.

I think you'll find xM the issue.

12 mins from the bench isn't long enough.

Think I might roll here, or is that too passive with substandard starters in Ward & Neco? Looking at Sanchez, Trent, Gundogan ➡ Guiata, Cancelo, Maddison/Zaha next week.

    Ward
    Perisic Trippier Neco
    KDB Gundogan Martinelli Andreas
    Haaland Jesus Mitrovic
    (Sanchez, Sessegnon, TAA, Diaz)

    1FT 0.1itb

Would you not play sessegnon instead of Neco? That was if there’s a change you get both of spurs defenders vs Leicester and both are capable of hauling especially against Leicester defense

Could do, yeah I'll think about it. Never intended to play both in same GW but 30mins of Sess could actually be better than 90 for Neco (can't see a CS v Fulham)

By the way I’d play that team then and roll your transfer outs you in a stronger position to have two free transfers after the int break

can you afford to do Sanchez to Guaita this week?

      does seem v sideways tho.

I like Palace but not sure how many clean sheets you'll get over Brighton.

Trent is a hold to imo.

I can but don't see the point when Guiata blanks also. I do really like Pope but I kind of think Newcastle's upcoming fixtures look better from an attacking point of view than a defensive one so not sure about doubling with Trippier. I'm definitely set on losing Sanchez though with their fixtures & loss of Potter. Guiata seems the standout 4.5 to me even though the stats don't really support this move currently.

Trent I'm not totally sure on, will look out for some defensive improvement in the Ajax game. Plans could also change over IB, so I would quite like to have 2 FTs

    Current WC team

    Pope, Ward
    Cancelo, Trippier, James, Neco, Coufal
    KDB, Martinelli, Zaha, Andreas, Bowen
    Haaland, Mitro, Isak

Tempted to either keep Jesus for one more week seen as his ownership is still so high and I think Arsenal should score at least a couple against Brentford but Newcastle have Bournemouth which is a great fixture for Isak.

Other option is to have a spurs player for this weekend, possibly Perisic for James and get James back for GW9 but booking in a transfer is always a bit risky.

Mornin' all, been a bit preoccupied recently so not fully up to speed with what's going on. It seems like prime WC time is this or next GW week?

I have 2 FT's, time to WC the below?

    Ward (Sanchez*)
Cancelo / Trip / Peri (TAA* / James*)
Dasilva / Martinelli / Pereira (Salah* / Grob*)
    Jesus / Haaland / Taylor

Realistically Taylor & Dasilva aren't starters anyway so team is in tatters so this is probably an obvious WC
