FPL

The FPL half-term report: Wolverhampton Wanderers

All 20 Premier League clubs’ seasons so far are analysed in our Half-Term Report series as the countdown to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) restart continues.

FPL bosses will get unlimited transfers before Gameweek 17, so these articles will hopefully help you pinpoint some key targets for the Boxing Day resumption.

Here, we focus on bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It’s not only our final piece of the series but, whisper it quietly, perhaps the least useful. All of the stats date from the Bruno Lage era, and he’s now been replaced by Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

You can read up on the new Wolves boss here, while we’ve got Scout Notes on all of their mid-season friendlies in our complete guide to the restart.

This piece will, at least, attempt to bring to light what Lopetegui has to deal with in his in-tray.

ATTACK: SEASON SO FAR

Big chances1819th
Expected goals (xG)15.3417th
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)13.7618th

Top of the pile on the to-do list: the attack.

There’s no secret as to why Wolves are where they are in the Premier League table right now, sitting as they are rock bottom for goals scored.

On only one occasion did Lage’s erstwhile troops score more than one goal in a league match, that happening against Brighton in Gameweek 15.

They have the worst shot-to-goal conversion rate in the league (4.5%), no surprise perhaps when 74 of their 177 efforts have come from outside the area.

But even ‘big chance’ conversion is abysmal, at 29.4%.

The struggle for goals is nothing new, as any Wolves fan will tell you, and they ranked 17th and 16th for goals scored in the two seasons that preceded this one.

DEFENCE: SEASON SO FAR

Non-penalty expected goals conceded (NPxGC)18.018th

Wolves’ defence hasn’t been too bad this season, giving Lopetegui a base to start from.

The West Midlanders actually concede big chances at a lower rate than champions Manchester City, so they perform fairly well on the xGC front as a result:

Their defensive numbers have mostly improved across the board compared to 2021/22 – the difference this time being that Jose Sa (£5.0m) has turned from Lev Yashin into Lionel Perez:

Jose Sa’s expected goals prevented (xGP)

B will outscore A imo, also you will have Andreas as bench fodder which is massive advantage to Greenwood

Yeah thats true. Will look to replace Martial with Mitro for the double in GW19. Don't want to start with Mitro if theres a good chance he'll miss 1 or 2 games

Actually another one just occurred this time with a possible Brighton double and the risk of Dawin not finding his shooting boots:
    A) Kane + Trossard
    B) Darwin + Kulu + 1.7 mil ITB for a rainy day

    1. Tonyawesome69
      • 5 Years

B - Trossard can wait until the Brighton double is confirmed

I think I'm finally there, but feel free to offer any advice, critical or otherwise.

    DDG
    Trippier Walker Gabriel
    KdB Almiron Martinelli Rashford
    Darwin Haaland Kane

    (Ward Perraud Patterson Andreas)

    0.6 ITB

Walker might be a bit hit or miss, but I can't see many options I can upgrade to that would be any better.

I don't get the Alisson pick. Generally his ceiling is 6 points and not sure Liverpool have made any improvements defensively to warrant spending 5.5m on a GK

      Thoughts on going without Liverpool?

Not sure they’re worth their price tags. Maybe I’m over analyzing but what is the motivation for them at this point, 4th place?

They’re obviously priced based on last season when they were keeping cleanies and Salah was on fire, with eyes on winning the league

        Agreed, not worth it.

Considered going Nunez - but you can get Martial, a better player from a better team for 6. Something.

Considered going Salah - but you can get Rashford, a better player from a better team for 6. Something.

Considered going Robbo - but you can get Shaw, a better player from a better team for 4. Something.

      Which is best?
      A) 3-4-3
0 bank with Haaland, Kane and Martial up front

      B) 4-4-2
5 mil bank with White in defence and Haaland and Darwin up front?

With second option I'd have cash to upgrade a mid to 8m for a DGW (e.g. Saka) plus Darwin to Kane if need be.

      Set on this

      Kepa
      Cancelo - James - Trippier
      Salah - Foden - Zaha - Almiron
      Haaland - Darwin - Martial

      Ward - Andreas - Patterson - Bueno

      Plan in gw 19 - Martial + Foden + Zaha ➡ Madisson + Trossard + Mitrovic

I would just get Trossard over Foden now. Foden might become a better option from GW20 onwards than he is now. You can play Andreas over Trossard in GW18 (that's what I'm currently planning). Saves a hit too

Something inside me says that Almiron will not keep scoring but the rotation with Andreas in 19 gives a a great run of fixtures for him so I prefer him + money itb over Wilson…might be wrong though, good luck mate

      Merry Christmas all 🙂

As far as my draft goes I'm just stuck on one decision now. Who do you reckon gets more points in the next 3-4 games?

      A) Nketiah
      B) Martial
