The FPL half-term report: Wolverhampton Wanderers

All 20 Premier League clubs’ seasons so far are analysed in our Half-Term Report series as the countdown to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) restart continues.

FPL bosses will get unlimited transfers before Gameweek 17, so these articles will hopefully help you pinpoint some key targets for the Boxing Day resumption.

Here, we focus on bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It’s not only our final piece of the series but, whisper it quietly, perhaps the least useful. All of the stats date from the Bruno Lage era, and he’s now been replaced by Julen Lopetegui at the helm.

You can read up on the new Wolves boss here, while we’ve got Scout Notes on all of their mid-season friendlies in our complete guide to the restart.

This piece will, at least, attempt to bring to light what Lopetegui has to deal with in his in-tray.

Expected goals (xG)15.3417th
Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG)13.7618th

Top of the pile on the to-do list: the attack.

There’s no secret as to why Wolves are where they are in the Premier League table right now, sitting as they are rock bottom for goals scored.

On only one occasion did Lage’s erstwhile troops score more than one goal in a league match, that happening against Brighton in Gameweek 15.

They have the worst shot-to-goal conversion rate in the league (4.5%), no surprise perhaps when 74 of their 177 efforts have come from outside the area.

But even ‘big chance’ conversion is abysmal, at 29.4%.

The struggle for goals is nothing new, as any Wolves fan will tell you, and they ranked 17th and 16th for goals scored in the two seasons that preceded this one.

Wolves’ defence hasn’t been too bad this season, giving Lopetegui a base to start from.

The West Midlanders actually concede big chances at a lower rate than champions Manchester City, so they perform fairly well on the xGC front as a result:

Their defensive numbers have mostly improved across the board compared to 2021/22 – the difference this time being that Jose Sa (£5.0m) has turned from Lev Yashin into Lionel Perez:

Jose Sa’s expected goals prevented (xGP)
2022/23-4.90

In a very similar predicament to this myself (see below). Have newly binned Nketiah for Greenwood and got Almirón for Andreas.

I’d prefer Shaw over Patterson but that’s depending if Walker is nailed which I think he is.

Not even sure they’re needed really? Not too many cleanies there over the next 5 or 6 games I imagine

    B. Trossard & Martinelli

I'd favour A) to start as you want to target that LEEDS fixture in GW18. Trossard can wait a little longer to get into your team, IMO.

Have taken Nketiah out tonight in favour of playing 4 at the back (in GW1 at least) and having Shaw. Am not sure on Arsenal and points could be spread amongst their attackers *if* they score. Fancy Shaw to do well. Reckon young Bradley has chance of starts ahead of him in Xmas and new year period, though...?

I rather like his fixtures to begin with, he’s having a great season so far, and Brentford and Villa are pretty nice to resume with, surely he’ll wanna score to put this World Cup memory to bed fast.

Plus the fact that if he even scores 1, he annoyingly always shoots to 3 bonus points like it’s his own law, no longer am I missing out on his hauls and he’s in for me hehe

    Which are the better options:

    Raya/Sanchez?

    KDB+Trossard/Salah+Gabriel?

    For extra Funds: Nketiah/Solanke?

Sanchez for sure. Better underlyings and good chance of upcoming doubles

You're gonna have to explain how Trossard and Gabriel are comparable for the second one. The first option is like 2.0 more expensive than the second

    Hi guys,

    Ward
    Cancelo - Trippier - James
    Rashford - Martinelli - KDB - Almiron
    Kane - Darwin - Haaland

    Iversen: Andreas: Patterson: B. Williams

Just throwing this out there again to gain more opinions on which of the two options is preferred for this side.

    A) James + Iversen

    B) Kepa + White/Gabriel

    Thanks gents

        Cheers man!
Yeah it’s a it if tough one for me, as James actually is a huge gamble and he just may not be as effective under Potter, whereas we already know what we’re getting with Arsenal don’t we somewhat.
Then again I really do not like those Arsenal fixtures for clean sheets over the next 4 or 5 GW’s, at the same time though they have really surprised us who they have done well against defensively.
        Arghhh such a conundrum.

Started playing around with Darwin-less drafts that attack the doubles and cram in more midfielders and landed on this.

    Kepa (Ward)
Cancelo / James / Trippier (Botman / Estupinan)
    Salah / Kulusevski / Mount / Trossard / Rashford
    Haaland / Mitrovic (Greenwood)

I'm not interested in Nunes. I think he's made a bad decision in signing for Liverpool and has already regressed. Things may go from bad to worse yet. Martial is the one imo.

Hint; you can start with Darwin and switch to Mitrovic for the double. That way you can assess if Mitrovic is an injury doubt or not (plus whether he gets his suspension or not) and you get Darwin for 2 good fixtures.

            ***, ***, Trippier, (White, Patterson)

            Salah, Saka, Martinelli, Almiron, (Andreas)

            ***, Haaland, Kane

            Options for the gaps:

            A) Walker, James, Darwin

            B) Cancelo, 4.8 def, max 7.5 forward

Not sure I can justify keeping Cancelo.

I do like Option A there from the two, and I personally have tried my best to maybe part ways with Cancelo, but I just cannot. He offers that security blanket of starts and heavily owned which if he hails will hurt rank. It’s a bit of a pain really but I do really like him in my side all the same.
I’d try to keep Cancelo if I were you, but if you’re really wanting James and Darwin maybe the Walker sacrifice is plausible.

If you had Saliba and value tied up in him, would you keep him or opt for Gabriel as a bit of a change up? Or even to White?

Yeah this is what I’m reckoning also, I have enjoyed owning Saliba, but these fixtures simply do not scream clean sheets at me, and with James he has two immediate good fixtures then followed by a double (if he plays both), so James just seems to be the logical choice, but at the same time are we just going with the memory of old with James, and him not doing much under Potter remains to be seen, but still think it’s just worth the gamble in James’s favour.

Personally not sold on double United and Havertz. I would consider Kulu in your team

            1. Bazunu (4.5m) or Iverson (3.9m) to pair with Ward?
            2. Trossard & Greenwood or Bailey & Mitro?

Personally think Bazunu is being overlooked at 4.5m. Fixtures, save potential, new manager. Also does not lock me in to Ward every week. Second question really is Trossard v Mitro as they would play.

As a Chelsea fan, I have no faith + I am going Reece James instead. Even that I am worried about, but he is quality.

Punt on Son? His current price is at 11.6, how do we think he will do from here onwards, i thought he had average first half last season and had kicked on from Christmas.

            Which is better?

            A. Pope and Patterson
            B. Kepa and White

I have owned Pope all year and got White at 4.6.
