FPL

When are the Blank Gameweeks in FPL?

There’s plenty of Double Gameweek talk within the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) community at present, following the confirmation that four teams will play twice in Gameweek 20.

Arsenal and Manchester City also have two fixtures in Gameweek 23, while there’s a chance that further ‘doubles’ could be announced for Gameweeks 21 and/or 22.

The yin to the yang are the Blank Gameweeks.

In theory, these should be slightly easier to navigate: while we’re sometimes given very little notice about an upcoming Double Gameweek (like the imminent one), Blank Gameweeks are usually known about in advance – although Covid and royal deaths have made this not the case in recent years.

There are currently three (almost certain) Blank Gameweeks for us FPL managers to juggle: Gameweeks 25, 28 and 32.

Here we take a closer look at the teams already guaranteed a fixture, who could miss out and when we’ll know more information about them.

BLANK GAMEWEEK 25

  • What it clashes with: The EFL Cup final.
  • Maximum blanks: Two fixtures (four teams).
  • When we will know who blanks: After the EFL Cup semi-finals have been contested in the midweek before Gameweek 22.
  • Any other information: The midweek after Gameweek 25 could yet house some outstanding fixtures, should two teams with an affected match not still be in the FA Cup by the fifth round.
GW25 Premier League fixtureStatusA blank will happen if the following occurs:
Fulham v WolvesOn
Newcastle v BrightonPossible blankIf Newcastle reach the EFL Cup final
Everton v Aston VillaOn
Leeds v SouthamptonPossible blankIf Southampton reach the EFL Cup final
Leicester v ArsenalOn
West Ham v Nottm ForestPossible blankIf Nottm Forest reach the EFL Cup final
Bournemouth v Man CityOn
Crystal Palace v LiverpoolOn
Man Utd v BrentfordPossible blankIf Man Utd reach the EFL Cup final
Spurs v ChelseaOn

Don’t get alarmed by the four ‘possible blank’ entries above, as there’ll only be a maximum of two fixtures being postponed (ie four teams blanking) in Gameweek 25.

Manchester City’s shock EFL Cup quarter-final elimination at the hands of Southampton means that their Gameweek 25 match against Bournemouth will go ahead – weather/Covid-permitting, of course.

Cup exits for Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers also mean that their respective Gameweek 25 fixtures against Arsenal and Fulham will proceed as planned.

All in all, this Blank Gameweek looks much easier to navigate than originally feared with well-owned FPL assets like Erling Haaland (£12.2m), Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m), Gabriel Martinelli (£6.8m), Martin Odegaard (£6.7m), Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£7.2m) all now playable.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were already in the clear with regard to Gameweek 25.

So who are the teams we have to be concerned about? Manchester United and Newcastle United are the bookies’ favourites to win their EFL Cup semi-finals, so their Gameweek 25 league matches against Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion look most at risk of being postponed.

We at least get four Gameweeks-worth of free transfers to help negotiate the blanks once the two finalists are known ahead of Gameweek 22 but many of us will now be able to easily negotiate Gameweek 25 without the use of a chip and potentially without hits, too.

BLANK GAMEWEEK 28

  • What it clashes with: The FA Cup quarter-finals.
  • Maximum blanks: Seven fixtures (14 teams).
  • When we will know who blanks: After the FA Cup fifth-round ties have been contested in the midweek before Gameweek 26. The results of the FA Cup fourth round, which takes place before Gameweek 22, should also give us a better picture.
  • Any other information: An international break follows Gameweek 28, so there is no chance that any fixtures will be pushed back into the subsequent midweek.
GW28 Premier League fixtureStatusA blank will happen if the following happens:
Arsenal v Crystal PalacePossible blankIf Arsenal reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Aston Villa v BournemouthOn
Brentford v LeicesterPossible blankIf Leicester reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Brighton v Man UtdPossible blankIf Brighton and/or Man Utd reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Chelsea v EvertonOn
Liverpool v FulhamPossible blankIf Liverpool and/or Fulham reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Man City v West HamPossible blankIf Man City and/or West Ham reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Nottm Forest v NewcastleOn
Southampton v SpursPossible blankIf Southampton and/or Spurs reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
Wolves v LeedsPossible blankIf Leeds reach the FA Cup quarter-finals

This Gameweek might also be not impossible to manage, even though there’ll be more blanks.

There’ll be a maximum of seven postponements but in all likelihood and based on past clashes with the FA Cup quarter-finals, the number will be more in the 4-6 region.

We’ve already got Newcastle United definitely in action against Nottingham Forest, so a triple-up on the Geordies looks appealing (once a possible Gameweek 25 is out of the way).

The Gameweek could get even easier to manage if Arsenal are out of the FA Cup by the quarter-final stage, and there’s a good chance of that as they are set to face Manchester City at the Etihad in round four.

Getting a full XI out without a Free Hit might still prove problematic but what might affect your decision is a possible Wildcard window immediately afterwards. Not only does an international break follow but a significant-sized Double Gameweek 29 could be on the cards, too, so we will likely want to freshen our squads for that.

‘Dead-ending’ your squad into Gameweek 28 is one approach, then, as you could in one fell swoop bring back all the players you’ve offloaded in preparation for the doubles. A Wildcard in Gameweek 29 wouldn’t allow for a Bench Boost in the same week, it should be said.

BLANK GAMEWEEK 32

What it clashes with: The FA Cup semi-finals.
Maximum blanks: Four fixtures (eight teams).
When we will know who blanks: After the FA Cup quarter-finals have been contested on the same weekend of Gameweek 28.
Any other information: A midweek round of Premier League fixtures (Gameweek 33) follows Gameweek 32, so there is no chance that any fixtures will be pushed back into the subsequent midweek.

GW32 Premier League fixtureStatusA blank will happen if the following happens:
Arsenal v SouthamptonPossible blankIf Arsenal and/or Southampton reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Bournemouth v West HamPossible blankIf West Ham reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Brentford v Aston VillaOn
Brighton v Man CityPossible blankIf Brighton and/or Man City reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Crystal Palace v EvertonOn
Fulham v LeedsPossible blankIf Fulham and/or Leeds reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Leicester v WolvesPossible blankIf Leicester and/or Wolves reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Liverpool v Nottm ForestPossible blankIf Liverpool reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Man Utd v ChelseaPossible blankIf Man Utd reach the FA Cup semi-finals
Newcastle v SpursPossible blankIf Spurs reach the FA Cup semi-finals

We won’t spend too much time dwelling on this Blank Gameweek, which is over three months away and may fall for many after the deployment of a Wildcard.

Anything from zero to four blanks are possible.

Two fixtures are confirmed as being definitely on already, however.

Aston Villa and Everton are so far the only two sides who avoid a blank in Gameweeks 25, 28 and 32.

Thanks, pal! A weekend of toddler birthday parties, so dealing with excrement of a different kind to what my FPL team has been serving up 😀

Hopefully not too waffley an article. Hopefully it'll become a bit clearer after the midweek EFL Cup ties, too.

No the format is perfect for me. I like having the full list of potential impacts to refer back to, and also got a good sense of the macro (definitely keeping in mind the deadend 28, WC29 strategy)

Can't see a way of getting to Kane without losing Salah, but don't really want to as Salah could do well against Brighton (?), and potential double on the way:

    Ederson (Iversen)
    Trippier Shaw Dalot (Botman Bueno)
    KDB Salah Rashford Odegard Almiron
    Haaland Mitro (Greenwood)

    2m itb

    Just ignore Kane?

    1. AARON-1
      • 2 Years

Given the likely Salah double and the fact that Kane has the hardest double in the league against the top two teams (although it would be harder if both matches were away), I'd stick with Salah. That is what I am doing

    2. Drumandbaines123
      • 3 Years

Could you do Odegaard to Mitoma then Mitro to Kane? Or if not Mitoma then perhaps Summerville?

Or yeah you could just ignore Kane if you really wanted to keep Odegaard and didn't fancy ripping the team up. Your call but risky going without Kane this week IMO despite the 4 yellows.

Hasn’t been the same player since the start of the season as evidence by his numbers, just hasn’t be getting in the same positions or causing anywhere near the appropriate amount of havoc

But there again he got the next game against Brentford.

Pep does have history in sidelining previously core options - Bilva and Laporte come to mind - so shock should perhaps be moderated. He now has options and will use them.

Easy to forget that we’ve been living in a paradise where Pep had little choice but to play him week in week out.

Hmm you're in pretty good shape already since you could just play Castagne over Cancelo. With 2 FTs I think I'd just replace Cancelo though. Dalot could be a nice option if Utd double again in 22, although you'd have to use another transfer to avoid playing a defender at Arsenal next week. Schär/Botman could also work. Or Cancelo - Dalot this week & Patterson - Schär next week maybe?

My brain has gone, did I imagine that we were given a second free hit chip to used following the week of the queens death?

Theoretically, one could be used in early blank, dead end middle blank, free hit final blank?

Yeah i've decided on this approach. Kepa to Emerson, then whoever next, then opssibly even back to Ederson for their DGW23.

Might even go De Gea this week to save the pennies

I'll hold onto Kepa until I wildcard most likely, only exception may be if Newcastle get a double sooner than that and I'll get Pope. Too much else going on to use an FT on that unless I feel like it's almost guaranteed to pay off well within a couple of games

My thoughts with Pope are you may as well get a cheapie def to go with Trippier. Ederson I understand people getting due to City rotation at the back and most don't want a double of say Ramsdale/White or De Gea/Shaw as there are good attacking options at these clubs.

I know Chelsea are pretty bad, but rotation with Ward is:

ful, CRY, BRI, FUL, whu, SOU.

I think I'll save FTs to rotate DGW options. Also, I'll have triple City and Newcastle anyway, so only other keeper I'd be interested in is Raya.

Rubbish as Kepa and Chelsea defence has been he’s still effectively keeping pace with Ederson.

You’d imagine City will improve more but part of my living and learning experience is that Ederson is almost never a good option.

    Kepa
    Cancelo, Trippier, Shaw
    Rashford, Salah, Odegaard, Saka
    Haaland, Wilson, Mitro

    (Ward, Castagne, Bueno, Andreas)

    - Thinking Cancelo to Dalot/Stones.
    - Worth a hit to change Mitro to Darwin for a punt?

Selling a dgw defender to double up on another? Big waste of a ft

I'm really looking forward to the "casuals" reaction when they see his name isn't on the teamsheet.

Much appreciated article, hadn't given anything but the smaeat thought to blanks yet and had no idea where they would fall. Will certainly have to keep a little more in mind looking at GW25 regarding any transfers after this week. Not really sure what I'll do if Liverpool get a double for GW21, hokey cokey isn't something I ever really do but KDB to Salah back to KDB for the next DGW then back to Salah if it looks like City will hit the Carabao final is certainly an option. Could hold onto Nunez instead but hard to avoid Kane right now

I could probably move Mitrovic to get him back instead but I'm not sure how keen I'd be on losing him. Then again Chelsea v Liverpool can be chaotic at times and the way the two sides are playing that's fairly likely, Nunez is chaos defined so perhaps going back to him may pay off

The (potential) Liverpool double is a bit of a headache for me too. Was fairly set on Darwin out for Kane this week (or if not, Wilson). KDB - Salah is perfectly viable but if ARS/BHA double I'd probably rather have a 2nd mid from one of them. Tricky game to predict as well, with Chelsea's lacklustre attack meeting Pool's shaky defence. Kind of feel like Robbo might be the one to haul if he plays both & manages 1 CS

I'm taking -8 this week and bringing in 2 Brighton mids so I'm not too bad there. Wouldn't be adverse to taking another hit next week for Odegaard possibly although I'm not sure where he'd go

    Which option next week:

    A. Kane, Bueno and Mahrez (-4)
    B. Salah, Shaw and Mitrovic

    Thanks

Cancelo & Trossard to Stones & Kulusevski?

Triple City would be posaible with Salah to KDB, but for a hit the foxtures aren’t so kind.

I'd avoid Kulu for the moment. Doubt he'll start both games back from injury.
