FPL notes – FA Cup: More Mahrez goals, Saka fitness latest

In this, the second of a two-part double-header, we round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the weekend’s FA Cup action.

Here, we focus on Arsenal, Leicester City, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Three FPL differentials to consider for Gameweek 24 and beyond

PEP ON MAHREZ

Just days after coming off the bench to score the vital winner at Stamford Bridge, Man City winger Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) haunted Chelsea again by scoring twice in a 4-0 FA Cup victory.

A fine free-kick was later followed up by a successful spot

-kick, taking the Algerian up to six goals and two assists from his last seven outings.

Head coach Pep Guardiola loved the performance, saying his levels have gone up in recent weeks.

The quality from Riyad is everything. He loves to play football, helped us to play the game, he played really good and at 0-0 that can happen. He played an outstanding game playing wider. Good game.

“He never lost the love [for football]. But if Riyad is sitting here I would say to him: the way Riyad is training and playing right now – even when we were in Abu Dhabi when we trained for a few days – it was absolutely not the same. I was completely fair.

“When they play in this way and they complain, I can say ‘yeah, you are right, you deserve to play’. But before, he cannot play because he is not playing at the level he is playing now. Sometimes I have to let them see in their own mirror who they are.”

So could he be an alternative route into their Double Gameweek 20 midfield? FPL managers may not want to sacrifice Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) for Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m) and the more explosive Mahrez is there for £5m less.

It’s a particularly bad time to be predicting Pep’s line-ups but it’s interesting to note that – since joining in 2018/19 – Mahrez has started all five trips to Spurs but none of the five at home.

Unfortunately, after Saturday’s Manchester derby, the champions will be hosting Spurs.

Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Kyle Walker (£4.8m) kept their places from Gameweek 19 and were much improved, boosting hopes for owners that they might have a significant part to play in the upcoming doubles.

SAKA “FINE”

The 20th and final Premier League team in FA Cup third-round action were Arsenal, who eventually saw off Oxford United 3-0 on Monday night.

A brace for Eddie Nketiah (£6.5m) kept up his fine record in the absence of Gabriel Jesus (£7.9m), with Gabriel Martinelli assisting the forward’s second strike.

“He showed great composure. He is a great finisher and the timing of his runs as well. The decision making to wait to the last moment shows his quality. It’s not only that – his understanding, his work rate I think is getting better and better. And I’m really happy with him.

“The problem is we have only one! And to go for that many months til Jesus is back is not easy. But we have to get the most out of the players that we have at the moment and if we can have some reinforcements – great.” – Mikel Arteta on Eddie Nketiah

Of note to Martinelli was the first appearance in months for the fit-again Emile Smith Rowe (£5.6m), who was the Brazilian’s positional rival for much of 2021/22.

“It’s good. It’s been four months since he played so I think it was a perfect game to give him some minutes, to get off the blocks and now he needs to start to get available and start to play at the highest level because we’re going to need him.” – Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe

There was a scare for owners of Bukayo Saka (£8.1m) when the midfielder was forced off after 75 minutes but his manager assuaged fears of an absence after full-time.

“He is fine. He’s fine.” – Mikel Arteta on Bukayo Saka

DALOT v WAN-BISSAKA

Four teams will play twice in Gameweek 20, including Manchester United. It’s a good time for popular right-back Diogo Dalot (£4.7m) to return from his hamstring injury, although the re-emergence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) is a threat to his FPL appeal.

Up until Gameweek 15, Dalot had started all league games for Erik ten Hag, yet the three post-World Cup encounters have seen Wan-Bissaka step in and collect three clean sheets.

Speaking after he featured in Friday’s 3-1 cup win, Dalot says he embraces the challenge.

“I learn a lot with Aaron, I’m sure he learns a lot with me as well. I think this is good and healthy competition that we have. I think in this squad we have at least two players for each position, a lot of players that can play other roles, so I think this dynamic makes us stronger, makes us better.

“I think we have good headaches to give to the manager and I think this is a good problem for him. We just have to give our best when we have the opportunities to play, not take that for granted because I think at this club, the demands are so high.”

It will push more managers towards in-form Luke Shaw (£5.1m), who seems slightly more likely to avoid rotations right now.

STILL NO KULUSEVSKI

Having rolled over Crystal Palace in the second half of their Gameweek 19 match, Antonio Conte was able to change seven of his first eight players against Portsmouth but had to stick with Harry Kane (£11.6m), Son Heung-min (£11.6m) and Bryan Gil (£5.0m) as the front three.

That’s because Dejan Kulusevski (£7.9m) and Richarlison (£8.4m) were again absent with their muscle and hamstring injuries. Much-maligned Gil continued his recent upturn in form when grabbing an assist at Palace and, at this price, could tempt some managers for Double Gameweek 20.

Yet it sounds like Kulusevski has a strong chance of facing Arsenal on Sunday.

“Well, not for all the players we are so confident but we are confident we’ll recover someone.” – Spurs assistant boss Cristian Stellini on the possibility of injured players returning for the north London derby

FPL new signings: Who is Newcastle forward Alexander Isak?

ROUND-UP

The pre-season prospects of Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams (£4.0m) have dampened with just one league start from the last possible six. Things have gotten worse over the weekend, as his poor performance at Blackpool ended with taking a blow to the nose that forced his withdrawal.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United were finally able to welcome back record signing Alexander Isak (£6.6m). The Swedish international had only made three appearances before a thigh injury of almost four months. He played the first half at Sheffield Wednesday and, while rusty, his availability could soon affect the game-time of Callum Wilson (£7.2m).

“Hopefully, Saturday will do him good and he’ll be involved versus Leicester [Carabao Cup quarter-final]. We want him fit and available as quickly as possible. I felt that 45 minutes was his maximum. A bit of a cliche but he would be like a new signing because we haven’t had him for a long period of time.” – Eddie Howe

Finally, cheap full-back Hugo Bueno (£3.9m) was rested for the draw at Anfield, suggesting his run in Julen Lopetegui’s starting XI will continue into a promising fixture run that begins from Gameweek 23.

Given Havertz poor performances last couple of games I’d not be surprised if he get benched. But Thursday’s game should be weighed in. Think there’s better FPL picks upfront still.

James > Botman or char (can't decide)
    Bueno > Akanji
    Andreas > Almiron

This would be for a -4, I could perhaps wait a week to do the Almiron move?

Natedog and co, you win 😀

Starting to consider the advanced Mac Allister over Mitoma because of direct FKs, pens and his increased open play threat at CAM

I'll use the Liverpool game as the final test before getting either in. Not checking who blanks or hauls, but if Mac Allister at least looks as good as Mitoma in that central role behind Ferguson in a difficult EPL game, as it might mean Big Mac has more routes to points

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 5 months ago

If Mac isn't as clinical or doesn't end up in the box as often, for instance, it's still clearly Mitoma for me

My understanding of Dr Zerbi's quotes and actions since GW14 is that Trossard is out of the team, or at least no longer in contention for the LW spot over Mitoma

Pretty incredible how he lost his spot, seemed like he was pushed up front out of necessity and now with Mitoma's form and Ferguson breaking through and Welbeck on the mend he doesn't have a place in the XI.

What an exciting team Brighton are right now!

    1. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      1 year, 5 months ago

I think the fact that you're not sure is enough to avoid a hit

KDB hasn't looked great since the World Cup. Either something's wrong or Pep's random roles (especially wide right) are affecting his usual output

Salah doesn't look much better himself, but at least he does look better than current KDB, imo. As always, these things could change on a dime

If your main reason here is DGW-chasing, there's also the risk of reversing that move for Salah's possible DGW21... And maybe even for a hit

You've (hopefully) spent a FT or two on your higher priority moves. I'd just trust your team here and see what happens

      1. SpaceCadet
        • 10 Years
        1 year, 5 months ago

Only reason is the dgw. Can easily get salah back if pool get a dgw. Kdbs ownership will also be high for the dgw making it more tempting.

        1. Ze_Austin
          • 5 Years
          1 year, 5 months ago

I think it's an easily avoidable hit, because of how KDB himself is playing, and then Pep's new control-focused approach in the difficult games as well

If this was the usual purring KDB pre-World Cup, I'd even have taken the hit myself

Patterson is injured, making him my priority here as we dive deep into DGW season with cheap defenders from the best defences

      Patterson to Botman, for me

50:50 between starting him vs Cucurella... But double Newcastle defence should be good for at least the next 4 GWs

Is Kane a must have for the DGW? Otherwise no Spurs.

To get Kane will transfer Darwin for a hit. Is it worth -4?

Two things from me on hits:

      1. I take lots of them, so I have way more experience than any good manager should... But it's fun for me, and it's gotten me enough data to say...
      2. Don't take a hit you're unsure of. The fact that you're unsure instantly reduces its worth to me, as it means there's a chance of backfiring as a free transfer, compounded with increasing that possible loss by 4 points before a ball is even kicked

        Wise words… thanks Austin!

      2. bench boost for every gamew…
        • 7 Years

Always a contextual factor to be aware of. What is the hit for? How will it affect you?
What state are your team in? Do you need your 12/13 to cover in some gws?
To me theres always that risk/unsurity involved, but i tend to always try to make an argument for why i do it/refrain to do.
For example, and it is not a hit related example but can show how i think. I bought Darwin in for that gw where he scored but got injured. Thats my best transfer all season despite the outcome. If i knew Liverpool were on a slump last 6 weeks i would have done otherwise, but WHO would predict that? And still, Liverpool being below standards Darwin ables himself to get so much chances.

          Understood

This is what's led me to many hits though. They just tend to backfire more often than not, because it's easy to forget/overlook why you bought the player you do own... And then the outcomes make me realise that with the sprinkling of reducing my own points as well

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 5 Years

If it's a non-starter like Cancelo, Foden, Walker or James being sold or a player with a BGW who I don't want from the following GW, then it's a different prospect

What I mean here is when you're unsure because the two options are close in fantasy potential

I'd take a hit for Andreas to Mitoma based on current data, for instance

          2. bench boost for every gamew…
            • 7 Years
            1 year, 5 months ago

My point is i agree with you, apart from the unsurity part. Except for the ones forced by injuries or a blankee out for a doubler i am always unsure. But i tend to do some hits but usualky i take a look on how those hits will look in the upcoming weeks.
Like now, i was prepared to take a hit but Zaha double and a possible double for Liverpool means i rather take only a single change now and then make the little wc-4 or 8 next week.

There is a possibility that Kane gets a yellow in the first game, misses the next one and Darwin hauls. You'll need to accept that if making the move. But long-term I do think Kane is a fantastic option and you will probably want him in soon.

Looking at their next 4 fixtures and the way both defences play atm and the nailedness factor, I'd prioritise a second Newcastle defender. I consider chasing this City DGW to be quite the luxury, as those aren't great matches

I agree. People are being blind sided by the doubles. I can’t look past Botman for the next 4 fixtures.

I think people are targeting city because they have another double not long after. But I agree it's like betting in a casino deciding which defenders will play both games (if any).

      Maybe Botman instead?

Valid. No YC count either, which is Schär's only caveat while his goal threat is the main draw

Heck, even Burn or Pope. The idea is to tap into their next 4 and then see what happens from there 🙂

    Havertz | Kane | Haaland

Mid looks strong play all 5, Darwin and Haaland up top, so you'd only be doing -4 for defence I think. It's either upgrade Cucu or Kepa to Ederson for nailed on player with 2 DGWs upcoming.

The word “Groat” comes from the old French word, gros, which means large or great and is named after the French coin called the Gros Turnois. In about 1280, Edward I introduced the Groat as the largest silver coin in circulation in England. It was worth four pence and remained the largest silver coin for 220 years until Henry VII introduced the testoon, shilling, at the beginning of the 16th century.

I have to say I'm surprised not many people are tempted to Triple Captain Haaland this week.

He's not scored yet this year, so will be desperate to get back amongst the goals and he is fully rested after being on bench in the FA Cup.

He scored a hattrick against Man United last time (I am aware man United are on much better form, will be a much harder team to beat) and Spurs have a terrible defensive record really.

Even if he gets a goal in each game, it's probably worth it surely?

Thank you hadn't seen that thread

There is some upside though to doing it this week, surely?

To me, it's much less about having the chance to use it on Haaland than having the chance to maximise a chip we only get to use once a season

I don't expect 20+ points from Haaland this GW because of how Pep's been approaching tough games since the Liverpool loss

I think Haaland or other great assets will get much better fixtures as doubles later, so I'm comfortable with just capping Haaland for this one and taking any good luck that comes with that already

I've got White on my bench this GW. NLD could be quite open, especially since Spurs' main chance of a win these days is by outscoring their opponents in the second half to make up for all they concedes in the first

I just bought Schär, even with DGWs flying about, because I want double Newcastle defence for at least the next 4

Cucurella vs Stones depends on the Thursday game

If Cucu starts vs Fulham, I wouldn't lose him vs Palace. Mostly because of the fixtures for City defenders, and the ever-present risk of getting Pep'd

Maybe a clearer replacement will be obvious by GW21, or you'd just bench him vs Liverpool

Darwin to Kane could easily backfire this week so not sure about that one especially for a -8. The -4 involving Rashford and Stones looks pretty good though.
