Eliteserien Fantasy 2024 guide: Odds, fixtures, chips + more

Welcome to Eliteserien Fantasy 2024! It’s brilliant to see so many newcomers to the game, so I thought I’d try to put together a beginner’s guide of sorts to help get you oriented. Just bear in mind that I am very much included in the ‘beginner’ bracket myself…

I won’t spend much time covering the game format here as it should be immediately familiar to FPL players, with just a few twists on the chips:

  • ‘Attack! Attack!’ – double points for all your forwards
  • ‘Rich Uncle’ – a free hit chip with unlimited budget for that Gameweek
  • The self-explanatory ‘Two Captains’

The main aim of this article is to provide a basic orientation with Eliteserien’s top (and bottom) clubs and an overview of the initial schedule, which features early blanks and doubles.

BOOKIES’ ODDS TO WIN TITLE

So, first up, let’s have a look at the odds of winning the title this season, to give a rough idea of the expected hierarchy:

  1. Bodø/Glimt 2.15
  2. Molde 4.00
  3. Brann 4.50
  4. Viking 15
  5. Rosenborg 21
  6. Lillestrøm 25
  7. Sarpsborg 30
  8. Tromsø 100
  9. Odd 150
  10. Strømsgodset 150
  11. Haugesund 300
  12. HamKam 300
  13. Fredrikstad 300
  14. Sandefjord 300
  15. Kristiansund 500
  16. KFUM Oslo 750

Bodø/Glimt and Molde, fresh off their European adventures during the offseason for Norway, occupy the top two spots. A Bodø/Glimt victory would secure their fourth title in the last five seasons, while Molde won in 2022 & 2019.

Brann have had a much more turbulent recent history: third in 2018, relegated to the First Division in 2021, promoted in 2022 and second on their return to the Eliteserien last year.

Of the three promoted sides, minnows KFUM Oslo are making their first-ever appearance in the Eliteserien and this is clearly reflected by the bookies’ odds. Kristiansund return after just one season in the First Division, while Fredrikstad are fancied to be a slight cut above at joint 11th.

FIXTURE DIFFICULTY

Next, let’s have a look at a fixture ticker for the first eight Gameweeks (source: https://www.viewfantasystats.com/eliteserien/fdr-planner/)

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The predicted top three – Bodø, Molde and Brann – also sit atop the fixture ticker for the opening eight Gameweeks.

A Double Gameweek 3 for Brann and Molde, aligned with appealing fixtures before and after, makes these two clubs an excellent place to begin your draft. If your initial strategy is to attack the Double Gameweek, you might also want to consider supplementing Brann & Molde double/triple-ups with the mid-priced options from Odd and HamKam.

EARLY CHIP?

The early Double Gameweek also presents an opportunity to deploy one of your chips. Since Molde and Brann players are quite expensive, Rich Uncle could be an option to enable a frontline that includes last season’s top scorer Bård Finne (BRA, 11.5m) and Molde talisman Fredrik Gulbrandsen (11m).

Alternatively, ‘Rich Uncle’ could be held for Double Gameweek 10, which includes Bodø, Brann, Rosenborg and Tromsø.

‘Attack! Attack!’ is another option for Double Gameweek 3, as the current template frontline appears to be Finne, Gulbrandsen and Kirkevold (HAM, 6m). Odd forward Børven (7.5m) looks a promising alternative to Kirkevold if you want to triple up on doublers. Viking’s Salvesen (8.5m) has been banging in preseason, although tough fixtures Bodø and Brann in GWs 2 & 3 may be slightly off-putting.

ATTACK V DEFENCE

As always, when using a fixture ticker with just one colour per game, it’s worth considering where defensive difficulty and attacking difficulty are flattened.

To help identify the teams which might be, for example, a good fixture for your attackers but a bad fixture for your defenders, I’ve also put together a colour-coded chart of goals and goals conceded last season:

Eliteserien Fantasy 2024

The left-hand column presents the team in order of goals conceded to highlight fixture difficulty for attackers, while the right-hand column orders teams by goals scored as a metric for defensive fixture difficulty.

It’s worth noting that Viking and Sarpsborg 08 look like quite appealing fixtures for your attackers but much less so for your defenders. At the opposite extreme, Haugesund and Strømsgodset appear to be pretty solid defences but struggle in attack.

WHERE TO FIND STATS

As for the players, I’m far from the level of familiarity required to write a comprehensive watchlist. However, the official Fantasy site does allow you to sort by goals, assists, clean sheets, bonus points etc, which can be supplemented by further data from sites like Transfermarkt and Whoscored.

I’ve also come across a massively helpful pre-season minutes tracker here (it also notes goals and assists).

COMMUNITY MINI-LEAGUES

That’s pretty much it from me.

I’ll just conclude with a couple of mini-leagues to join (thanks to Mullered in Maenam and Mince N Tatties for running these):

See you below the line!

They replaced him with Johan Bakke, listed as CM/DM by transfermarkt. Unfortunately I didn't see the game but will try to catch a replay & see how they shaped up without him (I suspect maybe Eriksen/Hestad up top?).

From a quick scan of the Molde fan forum on diskutopia yesterday, the gist was Gulbrandsen is very injury prone & we'll probably have to play with 7 mids for much of the season anyway

    On Gulbrandsen's injury, from: https://www.tv2.no/sport/fotball/eliteserien/molde-stjerne-knust-det-er-krise/16576762/

Molde's star forward Fredrik Gulbrandsen left the field before half an hour had been played in the series premiere against Strømsgodset on Monday afternoon. Gulbrandsen sat on the pitch and held onto the inside of his thigh. - This is the worst nightmare for Erling Moe, says TV 2's football expert Jesper Mathisen in the FotballXtra studio.

Gulbrandsen looked completely devastated and held his face. - It's a little too early for me to say how serious it is, but it didn't look good, says Molde coach Erling Moe to TV 2 before the second half.

It's another stretch [strekk] says Moe after the match.

When is Gulbrandsen back? - It is a bit difficult to answer, because we do not have an overview, but we hope that it will be as soon as possible, says Moe. The former Lillestrøm attacker screamed when he entered the players' tunnel. - There is a crisis for Molde. He has been in amazingly good form in friendlies and in the matches in Europe. He just flew over the grass. I understand that he is devastated, says Mathisen.

Nothing official on Berget but found this on Sarpsborg forum:
"The only thing I have gathered is that he went off the pitch when he felt a little familiar when he put in a spurt just before half-time. He even said after the game that it is better not to take any chances so early in the season, than to risk incurring a longer injury layoff. In the local newspaper, he himself says that at the time he did not know the extent of the injury, but hoped that he would be back against Odd at the weekend. The probability is relatively high that he will be back soon, regardless of whether he makes it to the game now, but if the rumors from the local newspaper that we were looking for Udahl on deadline day, it immediately becomes a little more suspicious. Although it may not have anything to do with the injury situation, it is striking that this was the first time we heard rumors about a striker in this transfer window. TL;DR: Don't know, but hardly serious."

I've got myself in a really awkward spot with Gulbrandsen injury, no Finne, nothing itb, and Stenevik instead of Løvik. Only way I can fix all 3 is to downgrade Hauge for a -8; otherwise maybe I move Gulbrandsen to Høgh (if starting; we get B/G v VIK lineups before deadline) or TLO and leave Finne for GW3. I'm not that keen on Kirkevold either.

      1. Bunk Moreland
        • 8 Years

I would sell Gulbrandsen and Stenevik to Finne + a cheap defender for a -4. Finne is a great pick, he was top of all the stats for strikers last year and started again this year with a number of clear chances in the first match.

I would not pick Løvik. He is not the preferred choice on left back, that is Kristoffer Haugen who will be back very soon. Martin Linnes is the best Molde defender currently fit.

I wasn't too sure about that. In their conference league games in Feb-March Haugen played CB with Løvik LWB. And Løvik started almost every game in the 2nd half of last season, whether LWB/RWB.

Was this because of an injury crisis at CB or something like that? Anyone able to provide further context?

Yeah, injuries to center backs. Now Molde has bought a new expensive center back from Bodø Glimt (Amundsen), and they also have their other CBs back. Haugen will most likely play wing back again when he is back - although, you never know. There is some uncertainty and thats why I rate Linnes higher, untill we have definite proof of Haugen playing one position or the other.

Thanks Bunk. I'll think about it but I must admit I'm a stubborn, rogue McNulty at heart who struggles to take sensible advice & learns only from my own f- ups. So I'll probably blunder into Løvik anyway 😆

Løvik is/was back-up for Haugen. But Løvik played most of last season at the opposite side due to Linnes being out with an injury. In the Conference League matches, Linnes was back, but in some of the matches they played all 3 of the wing-backs with Haugen being used as a centre-back. But as Bunk mentioned, Molde have bought Amundsen this winter. Haugen will still be an option if they lack centre-backs.

Molde generally want two players in every position, and they rotate a lot, so you'll see Løvik playing some matches even when Haugen is fit again. And Stenevik will probably also get a few matches as wing-back instead of Linnes.

Tough situation I’d take a -4 this week Gulb to Finne and whatever other transfer allows that. Finne ownership is so high that if he goes big your rank will plummet. You can then assess week 3 sfter another round of information.

Yeah I'll probably just do something like that. Looks like I read too much into his (lack of) preseason form

Lehne Olsen is the obvious move.

Kirkevold scored a few goals last year. I think you can reasonably expect 4 to 9 points from him in the double. But they do have an able striker on the benched that they bought last season (Udahl), if Kirkevold doesnt score in the first few matches they may give him a shot. For that reason I am unsure about buying him myself. I might hold Gulbrandsen for another week to see if a good striker emerges.

Can't believe I missed this article before the deadline, nice round up. Some good bits of info I missed in the comments as well. Maybe this will be the year I write a few articles again. Enjoyed the first week despite being fairly template and a mediocre 51 pts from this lot:

    Christiansen
    Strand Nilsen, Linnes, Soltvedt
    Ingebrigtsen, Jørgensen, Grønbæk, Åsen
    Gulbrandsen (K), Kirkevold, Finne

Hansen; Dahl Reitan, J Andersen, Bjarnason

10 doublers for GW3 and was set up for Attack! Attack! but obviously Gulbrandsen's injury could change that. Looks a good chance to free up some money for a second Glimt midfielder.

TV 2 Sport on YouTube have really in-depth highlights (10-20 minutes) and they seem to have streamlined them a little to show fewer subs.

Everyone plays this game differently. Personally I am going against the crowd and benching Gulbrandsen until we know more about how long he is likely to be absent. Early estimate seems to be along the lines of out until 21 April.

Think I can navigate the next few weeks without him & not have to worry about having enough funding whenever I want him back. Don’t want to have to spend two transfers just to take him out/bring back in either. Of course if it is confirmed that his absence is going to be more long term than first thought then I will bring in a replacement immediately. Don’t suppose many are doing the same as me but it would be so boring if we all did exactly the same!

Thanks. Good tip on the highlights. That would be brilliant if you could contribute the occasional article. I'm still figuring out how I want to present updates/team news, whether to try round them up in a weekly article if I have time or just post messages here. I think the stats are fairly accessible for everyone but I'm not sure how easy it is find team news or short articles summarising the games in English so I thought I might focus on translating sort of content from NRK/TV2. But I'm still a newcomer to the game so I think it would be great to get a complementary perspective from someone more experienced.

Anyone seen any definite news on how long Gulbrandsen will be out for? Tempted to transfer in Salvesen this week, then upgrade a cheap midfielder to Hestad ahead of DGW3.

Haven't found a specific timeline, but there was an update here:
      https://www.tv2.no/direkte/0nr51/sportsdognet-live/660d0bb7c2fb071c7295ffe5/molde-med-oppdatering-om-stjernespissen

"The Molde star gives an update after the injury. - I have good green meat [ 😆 - I don't know how to translate this], so I reckon it won't take too long. Of course it's hard to get an injury when I've been in the shape I've been in, but that's the game. I will come back stronger, says Gulbrandsen to TV 2. Molde FK's doctor Martin Engeland writes in a text message to TV 2 that they have received answers to the investigations into the injury that Fredrik Gulbrandsen (31) sustained in the series opener against Strømsgodset. - Fredrik has a small muscle injury. In the future, we will continuously assess when he is ready to phase into football training and matches, says Engeland."

Still doesn’t sound that good the bit about phased back into training sounds like a couple of weeks at least to me . Sold him on already still going to save the funds to get him back as you rightly posted earlier he had been on fire in Europe on preseason.
Cheers for the updates very much appreciated the work you are putting in and sharing with us all.
        All the best

I can exile him from our kingdom only by sin-binning - however, this would merely silence his gloats of huzzah! and would leave the lurking undisturbed. Breakaway forum perhaps required to truly lock him out?

      Ty for this,

Those are very generous highlight packages with some running up to 20 minutes.

Think I'm done for the week with a Gulbrandsen to Finne but still have cash itb so may yet move again for another Molde.

Would leave me with no starters from Brann or Molde if unavailable 😕

Nothing showing up NRK/TV2. All I could find was this post (from yesterday):
"Eirik Horneland confirms live on "Fotballfeber" that Soltvedt has not trained. They hope he can be back in training tomorrow, but it is completely open. So he could neither confirm nor deny whether he is ready."

          I will start him anyway

I haven't found this list on a single page exactly, so it's selectively collated from each match, ignoring players who injured / unlikely starters and including a few with longer odds who are popular fantasy picks or who I've seen in teams posted here.

Still, they obviously weren't expecting such a tight game with Viking at 9% for a CS

        Soltvedt update:
"I will say that, it went well today. At least I'm available. That's what Joachim Soltvedt tells Bergensavisen after Saturday's Brann training. According to the newspaper, Soltvedt trained fully throughout the session. Brann coach Eirik Horneland is also optimistic. - It looks like he will be ready. It is gratifying, says Horneland to BA. The left back got off to a flying start to the season against Tromsø last weekend, where he scored two goals. Unfortunately, he had to leave with an injury in the second half. Soltvedt did not participate in Friday's training, which TV 2 was present at."

We are at half-time at the Aspmyra stadium, and the teams go to break 0-0. A tight, steady and intense game of football has been played in Bodø. Both teams had opportunities, but the biggest came the guests' way in the first 45. Viljar Vevatne came close to directing Lars-Jørgen Salvesen's header into the back of the net first, but the ball ended up with Nikita Haikin. Vevatne was then supposed to serve Sander Svendsen inside the Glimt area, but the winger's header was masterfully averted by Haikin's reaction save. Glimt has occasionally tried to take the Vikings defensively by surprise with quick combination play, but so far the sides have been rock solid at the back. One thing is certain: Both teams have a way to go if they are to maintain their goal average from the last four head-to-head meetings. We'll be right back with act two of Bodø/Glimt - Viking!
