Euro 2016

Euro 2016 Team Analysis – Wales

UEFA European Championship debutants Wales are a contradiction in terms.

For a side that lives by a ‘Together Stronger’ motto, they are totally dependent on Gareth Bale to give what is a hard-working and well-organised unit a genuine goal threat.

Chris Coleman’s team expect to make the knock-out stages of the competition. To do so they will probably need one or more players to step up and take the attacking load off their Real Madrid talisman.

Wales face Slovakia at 5pm on Saturday, June 11, before an eye-catching 2pm encounter with England five days later and final Group B match against Russia at 8pm on Monday, June 20.

Aside from elimination, qualifying third from the group is the scenario to be avoided as it would most likely set up a Round of 16 clash with either Germany or Spain.

THE ROAD TO QUALIFICATION

Wales flirted with humiliation in their opener, away at Andorra. Not content with allowing their hosts to score a first competitive goal in four years, they then came within nine minutes of giving the minnows a first group point since 2005.

That man Bale’s late free-kick secured a 2-1 victory and saw Coleman’s men embark on an eight-match unbeaten run, including an impressive 1-0 home win against eventual group winners Belgium.

Seven clean sheets in ten qualifiers was the bedrock of their success, particularly as the 11 goals they managed was the second-lowest return, behind Albania, of the 24 Euro 2016 qualifiers.

A nervy 2-0 defeat in Bosnia-Herzegovina was the only time they shipped more than one goal in a match, requiring them to book their ticket to France with a final fixture 2-0 win over Andorra.

In three friendlies since qualifying, Wales have hardly inspired: defeats to Holland and Ukraine and a 1-1 draw at home to Northern Ireland secured with an 89th minute Simon Church penalty mean Coleman’s charges will go into their one and only Euro 2015 warm-up, on June 5, on the back of three defeats from their last five matches.

Most Appearances: Wayne Hennessey, Chris Gunter, Ashley Williams, Gareth Bale (10); Neil Taylor, Hal Robson-Kanu (9); Aaron Ramsey (8), Simon Church, Ben Davies, Joe Ledley (7).

Most goals: Gareth Bale (7); Aaron Ramsey (2); David Cotterill, Hal Robson-Kanu (1).

Most assists: Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey (2), Ben Davies, Jazz Richards, Andy King (1).

THE KEY TARGETS

The pressure on Gareth Bale to perform is huge. Handed a more advanced central role under Coleman, he played a part in nine of their qualifying goals, courtesy of seven strikes and two assists, and also fired more than twice the number of attempts than any team-mate.

Priced at 10.5 and listed as a forward in the Uefa game, Bale currently sits in 10% of sides. Whilst the stats show he clearly thrives on being his country’s main man, that’s still a big outlay for a player, like his team, with no international tournament experience whatsoever.

Aaron Ramsey, at 7.5, represents a more measured acquisition. Although he scored just twice in the qualifiers, the Arsenal midfielder produced just five shots less than Bale inside the box, whilst he also led the way for key passes, despite mustering just two assists. Ramsey is also number one for crossing and corner kicks, which strengthens his appeal in the Draft Kings game.

Those seven clean sheets in qualifying should make a Welsh defender a worthy investment. Neil Taylor may emerge as the best option for points at both ends of the pitch – fielded as a left wing-back in Coleman’s preferred 5-3-2 formation, the Swansea man made more crosses and double the number of key passes as Chris Gunter on the right.

Currently owned by 1% of managers, Taylor’s 5.0 value in the Uefa game makes him a cheaper option than club colleague Ashley Williams (at 5.5, with 5% ownership status). Furthermore, Taylor was top for interceptions and second for tackles in qualifying, strengthening his Draft Kings potential.

Number one Wayne Hennessey (5.0) is also worth a look at 5.0 – the Palace stopper registered 21 saves in qualifying, a tally bettered by only four other keepers. If Wales can rediscover their appetite for clean sheets, Hennessey will also be an attractive option in the Draft Kings game where shut-outs earn more points for keepers.

THE LONG SHOTS

If price is a factor, James Chester, at 4.5 in Uefa, could be a budget enabler at the back, particularly in the Draft Kings game, which doesn’t reward the clearances and blocks at which Ashley Williams excels. Chester equalled Williams for successful tackles and beat him for interceptions, despite featuring in four fewer qualifiers.

The 6.0-priced Hal Robson-Kanu offers some value for those on a budget. Having started nine of the team’s ten qualifiers, he looks a nailed-on starter who could benefit from the potential freedom afforded him by the desire of opponents to concentrate on shutting down Bale. End product remains the issue, however, with the Reading man scoring just once from a total of only 14 attempts in qualifying.

Upcoming Friendlies

Sweden v Wales (June 5).

Anyone with any insight/qualified guess as to how Spain will line up?

Nolito had a good game yesterday and have had a really good season. At 6.0 he could be very good value, given he starts. No?

Yeah, it seems like he's destined to be a fringe player, while he's definitely been the most in form of their forwards this season. That 2nd goal against Bosnia is a gem!

If he starts, yes, definitely in my team.

Spain will load up on midfield as per usual. I have no idea where Nolito is in the pecking order, just a feeling that he's lower than I think he should They've been rotating so much, it's hard to say, but in the important matches they had the pretty regular old guard of Iniesta, Busquets, Silva, Pedro, Cesc... Costa. Costa is not in the team, but the no. 1 striker spot probably goes for Morata. Obviously, they could (and imo should) drop Pedro and play Nolito in his place. But then they have a plenty of midfielders to play there, they can always put Iniesta on that flank and play Isco or Koke in the middle or something like that.

His season at Marseille was rated pretty high and although he was quite disappointing today, he impressed earlier for France. Essentially, he is very different, he's a more comfortable with the ball, deep playmaker type of holding midfielder. I seriously doubt Deschamps will drop his 4-3-3 now, and as long as he plays 4-3-3, either Diarra or Cabaye will most likely be on field. And atm Diarra has a huge advantage to Cabaye, imo.

I think this is key here. Kanté has incredible work rate, but I think it interferes with Pogba and Matuidi's game. He simply runs too much and ends up all over the pitch. Diarra is more of a role player and fits so well into this French team. Imho 🙂

Yeah. Personally, I think he's individually a bit overhyped, but definitely has his role. Kanté is very similar to Matuidi, in fact. I doubt if it would work too well if they play them both at once. Maybe 4-2-3-1 with Pogba (or Payet) in the hole.

Yeah. No wonder their defence sucks. They literally have to compose it from the 4th row CB's.

I think Umtiti would be the good choice though. That and force Koscielny on right side. Umtiti is very apt with the ball, unlike the two donkeys Rami and Mangala.

Umtiti is very good too. Not sure if he's in the squad(?). Kos is a donkey imo, but then Rami is the biggest one around.

              France are fekd defensively.

Umtiti is in the squad, but unlikely to play. Appears to be the 3rd in the order for the CBL position.

One has to feel for Deschamps. It's not 5 of 6 first CB's in his list are out for the Euro. Wonder if he ends up resorting to a deeper defence line and counter attack game. That could work with the good ball winners on midfield, pacy forwards, and donkey defence.

So guys I've been thinking about the wildcard thing, specifically on when to use it. I personally think that the best option here is to use the wildcard after the round of 16 since 8 of the teams are going out and we can only make 4 free transfers. However, apparently, here, in the FFScout, all opinions converge in just one direction: to use it after round 2 of group stages.
So... Can you guys give me some good pros on that?

I guess people are thinking they won't be having players from that many team's after the group stages. If that's the case, saving wc and effectively allowing for a wider selection/more balanced team in round of 16 could be a huge advantage.

I know, but saving wc and using it after round of 16, would let you to pick players from all 16 teams with those unlimited transfers, allowing us to pick cheaper players from lesser teams, likely to go out, but who could still get some points.

A manager who already used his wc in group stages will have to try and get players from teams likely to go through to quarter-finals

I think we're thinking the same, but I'm just messing it up trying to get my thoughts out there 🙂

          I might be overthinking this

As I see it, part of the game is gambling that you can predict who will go through in the knockout phase and selecting your team accordingly. By the time of the third matchday (in the group stage), there will be some teams eliminated already and there will be some who have qualified already and will be rotating fully through their squads. If you keep an eye on team selection for matchday three, you can rotate in suitable French or Spanish players, for instance. And then in the knockout stage, you back yourself to pick the likely match winners. If you fail, the only option is plenty of transfers for hits. But if you fail, you're not going to do well in the competition anyway. It's a high-risk, high-reward game. There's not so much thrill in playing safe with this game and it rewards gambles much ore than FPL.

IMO You lose 8 teams after the group stages and you have unlimited transfers to reshape your team. You can also have 4 players from each team.

After the round of 16, you lose another 8 teams and can have 5 players but you only have 4 transfers. To me that is the best time to WC.

I also may be overthinking things and of course it does depend on you having a reasonable scoring team throughout the first 3 rounds.

Oof steer clear of friendlies man! Even with line ups your then gonna see 6 changes by 60 minutes.

I know. But this was also just 2-1 before the mass changes occurred, so failed anyway. There was a reasoning for this:

France takes these friendlies seriously, they have to get their team together in these matches, and the attacking players are eager to fight for that starting place.

Meanwhile, Cameroon plays a decisive CAN2017 qualifier on Saturday, and they admitted that they're already thinking of that.

So, there was a chance that after France has scored the first goal, Cameroon gives up, and then the French have a scoring practice.

Didn't happen, but I felt it's a risk worth taking. Instead, I found confirmation to my suspicions: this French team is really shambles, defence in particular.

I'm a team player, but can also work good on my own. Very flexible and ability to multitask. Hard worker that think's outside the box.

My biggest weakness is ridiculous stubbornness not to go with the herd. Could be a good ability, but more often than not finds me ending up behind.

Wow, not so much actually, but I'm a real quick learner and one of my main feats is my abaility to see things as a whole and how different pieces fit together.

    Evening guys! 🙂

I have just made a first draft for the Euros. Haven't been around for a while so have no idea about the bandwagons here.

This what I have managed to come up with, with whatever knowledge I have.

    Sommer - Rui Patricio
    Hector - Mangala - Smalling - Denayer - Berezutskui
    Alli - Candreva - Januzovic - Konoplyanka - Ozil
    Milik - Kane - Ronaldo

Thoughts please? Where am I going wrong?

Nice, already have Patricio so I think he should be enough, love Portugal's group too. Think doubling up is an option? Defence doesn't look too good on paper but the group compensates for it.

Italy is a major miss in my team. Bonucci?

Patricio sounds good. I'm still tipping Guerreiro. But I fear I'm causing some serious bandwagons here (starting from Guerreiro) and negating all my good differentials, so please don't take my word for gospel: these are just my punts from what I've seen and followed how things evolve around some teams.

Is he not? He did play as a Wing Back under Conte's system and did quite well from what I saw.

Quite a lot of options for 7.5 so I am not too attached to him. Any other options?

i think people are expecting giaccherini might get some time at wing back, but conte will probably switch things up plenty so i'm avoiding for now.

perisic is the biggest midfield bandwagon right now, same price as candreva.

Candreva should start. Italy have some midfielders coming back but I can see Giaccherini and Darmian dropped with Florenzi moving wide if that's the case. Nailed IMO.

Not necessarily, I just wouldn't treble up on any team and England wouldn't be the one if I were to. I'm not a big fan of this French team but I went with Giroud anyway. Think that the pressure from the fans who were booing him today and asking for Benzema will motivate him like it's done for Arsenal in the past.

i think doubling on england attack is too much tbh. the three other teams in that group conceded a total 17 goals in 30 games in qualifying, none of them strike me as especially leaky. i actually think england's defence could do better than attack - i realise they've looked a bit dodgy lately but we don't generally concede often at all against the smaller nations. i don't really see the point in picking smalling over dier though, i expect dier to be nailed.

Anyone starting to think the French attack is an absolute minefield? No doubt collectively they will score goals and do well, however who do you pick? Payet, Griezmann, Giroud, Coman, Martial could easily share the points quite evenly.

I never understood this argument tbh .Good teams create more chances . Good players who do well in bad teams are on usually on set pieces which is the advantage rather than playing in a bad team imo.
