Fantasy Eliteserien 2018 – Gameweek 5 Preview

Gameweek 4 served up a bumper set of double fixtures, with many Eliteserien managers racking up some huge scores. Another round of double encounters looms in Gameweek 6 but ahead of that we have some respite with this weekend and Monday’s single collection of matches.

Even though this set of fixtures is sandwiched between two pivotal Gameweeks, it should still offer Fantasy managers plenty of opportunity to accrue points.

Gameweek 5 matches

IK Start – Vålerenga
(Saturday, 5:00 P.M.)
After a brilliant opening match at home against Tromsø, Start have lost two games in a row. Despite scoring only one goal in those two, Start have looked like a team capable of scoring goals. Kabran looks like the major threat, while Floki seems to be nailed on up front. Sigurdarson is on most set pieces, but has been the first player to be subbed out of the front players.

Vålerenga will hope to bounce back after a terrible game against Strømsgodset. Johnson is worth monitoring going forward.

Molde – Lillestrøm
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Molde had a terrible game against Rosenborg and were put down to earth again. With two scrappy wins against Haugesund and Tromsø in the previous gameweeks as well there are question marks over how good they are. Rotation is likely as well after last gameweeks horror show. Linde should still be a safe pick. Lehne Olsen and Knudtzon have been among the top scorers over the first four gameweeks, and are being overlooked by a lot due to the double gameweeks. This is probably not the best week to bring them in, but long term they are definitely viable options.

Ranheim – FK Haugesund
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Ranheim pulled an impressive comeback late against Sandefjord away and secured their second win in three games. Neither team looked particularly impressive though, and Ranheim were also tore apart by Tromsø in their first game in the previous gameweek. Tønne still looks like a great option, he was just inches away from scoring against Sandefjord after going around the goalkeeper.

Haugesund have enjoyed a surprisingly good start to the season and have given us a few good options. Akintola currently looks like the prime pick, as he’s been involved in most of their goals and has caught our eye with his great dribbling.

Sandefjord – Kristiansund BK
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Sandefjord still looks like prime candidates to go down, despite their 1-4 win away against Start in Gameweek 3. Last time out they were incredibly lucky to get a draw against Stabæk at home, before they gave away a 1-0 lead at home against Ranheim. We can’t see any Sandefjord assets worth keeping.

Kristiansund played a cynical away game against Brann and almost got away with a point. Their defensively minded approach could mean McDermott is the prime pick from the 4.5 bracket. Gjertsen surprisingly missed out with an injury, he’s worth monitoring. Stokke is also back for Kristiansund.

Stabæk – Tromsø
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
This tie includes two of the most interesting Eliteserien teams right now. Stabæk’s Ohi should be a prime option ahead of the double in Gameweek 6, as should Brochmann who scored his first goal of the season against Sandefjord. They also offes a bunch of budget options, like Vetlesen (4.4) who have been given a more advanced role as a wide central midfielder in a 4-3-3 instead of a holding midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 and Granli (4.0) who seems to have nailed down the right back spot and is also on corners from the left hand side.

As last year, Tromsø was the team who delivered most points during the double Gameweek. Playing attractive attacking football, they scored seven goals over the two fixtures. Åsen was the man of the week with a monster 30 point haul, scoring two, assisting three and three bonus in both games. Antonsen, their out of position defender playing in midfield, scored one and assisted one, while wingback Nilsen also got a goal. Berntsen is emerging as the prime budget pick, as the 5.0 midfielder is fielded up front and looks to be in great form. After assisting a goal in his debut against Molde, he scored a goal and picked up a total of five bonus points over the double. A honorable mention to Gamst, who had two great games from his holding midfield role, and picked up three bonus points.

Strømsgodset – Odd
(Sunday, 5:00 P.M.)
Strømsgodset are a team we are struggling to place right now. They played a perfect away game against Vålerenga in a 4-1 win, before they were completely outplayed by Tromsø in a 1-3 loss. Pedersen looks like he’s capable of winning the golden boot, while we had two disappointing games from the prime midfielders Jradi and Ulland Andersen.

Odd got their first win of the season against Bodø/Glimt after a brilliant Ruud free kick, but still doesn’t look like a team likely to score a lot of points. Kitolano still a good pick at 4.5, while Risa is worth monitoring as he’s starting up front in the absence of Børven.

Sarpsborg 08 – Brann
(Sunday, 7:00 P.M.)
Two of the top teams meet up in the late game on Sunday. On paper this looks like a tight match with few chances. Sarpsborg were surprisingly outplayed by Haugesund away and should be fairly happy to get away from that clash with a point. Schwartz looks like a good pick if he can nail down that striker spot over Agger.

Brann scored a deserved winner seven minutes into injury time after an Acosta header. They definitely look like a solid team, but they also look more likely to keep clean sheets than score a lot of goals. Despite the tough matchup, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a clean sheet for Brann here. Rolantsson is worth monitoring as he keeps starting out wide. Wormgoor and Teniste the safe picks, who both offers attacking returns and bonus potential.

Bodø/Glimt – Rosenborg
(Monday, 6:00 P.M.)
Rosenborg came back in a big big way last round, while Bodø/Glimt had their big goalscorer come off with injury, a heavy cramp they are now racing to get completely rid of for monday. Given the season injury on their second choice striker as well, this leaves Bodø/Glimt looking somewhat toothless, and a re-invigorated Rosenborg are huge favorites for this Monday night game. We are looking at the right flank to provide points in Helland and Hedenstad, as well as backing a clean sheet in Hansen and Reginiussen.

Rosenborg’s Tactical Shift Worth Monitoring

One of the huge discussion-points from this last gameweek is the resounding win Rosenborg pulled out at home against previously undefeated Molde. Though much can be explained with the players adding that extra few percentages to the effort on the pitch, there was a huge tactical change worth looking into, in Nicklas Bendtner taking up the left flank, allowing them to field both super-strikers Bendtner and Søderlund up top. With the ill effects of Bendtner’s wandering playstyle neutralised in this way, and also setting up both him and Søderlund as big targets for the crosses from Helland and Hedenstad, Rosenborg looked to be back in that unbeatable form they have sported these seasons passed.

The big question now is, will Rosenborg keep playing in this manner, and what does that do for the Fantasy options in the squad?

Bendtner finding his stride is a big one, with a huge ownership already invested he is once again a danger to those who don’t have him. A continued presence on the left side will dull his prospects as the prime goal scorer, so the price tag is somewhat high now, and the weigh-up vs. ownership gets even tougher than before.

The formation opens up Søderlund as an option, and with him taking the main striker position possibly the best option for strikers. Søderlund is no stranger to the Norwegian golden boot, and is more than capable of pulling out brace and hat-trick performances.

Of most interest is perhaps the added value to Helland and Hedenstad as solid fantasy picks. Helland has always been a big goal and assist threat on his own, and with two big strikers to aim for he should find his target more often than before. The same could be said for Hedenstad, who seems to have unlocked his combination play with Helland to become an equally dangerous threat. That they both share set piece duty also helps, with the likes of Reginiussen, Konradsen and new arrival Hovland bolstering the power present in the box at corners and free kicks.

Alas, this all depends on Rosenborg adapting this tactic full time or not, so all eyes are following them in the coming two Gameweeks before we might see another big push for double or triple ownership in the team.

Guess so. Somebody (I think Ramboros) talked early on about potential blanks around then 17-20 and potential doubles in last few games of the season.

Personally hope not after what just happened, and that the league gets progressively more predictable, or at least did last season.

That's correct. GW17 takes place right after the second qualifying round in EL/CL. All of the Norwegian EL teams start in round 1. I think Rosenborg also start in round 1 of the CL qualifier. GW21 takes place right after the play off rounds.

Interestingly Stabæk, Brann and Ranheim face the EL/CL teams twice in this period, and would likely feature in other DGWs too.

Interesting. Brann and Rosenborg didn't ask to get their games moved last year, but Odd and Haugesund did.

I doubt Rosenborg will ask this year, and the same for Molde and Sarpsborg to be honest. They have good squad depth and I guess they don't want to postpone their games unless they have to. Lillestrøm might do, if they progress through the first qualifying round, as their squad depth isn't as good IMO.

Ranheim will change their turf this summer and Rosenborg is the first team to face them after the summer break. For practical reasons they might postpone the game, although it shouldn't be an issue.

Not to be rude but I'm afraid those 53 points did a lot more harm than they did good. You (like me, almost identical situation) destroyed the casuals but equally got destroyed by those who parked the bus and scored close to 100 points from their defence alone.

79 with two captains on Haugen and Ohi.. Not happy.

600 to 2100 in a DGW I planned for and used a chip.

72 with no chips used because the app crashed while I checked line-ups and I angrily forgot to save, haha! It appears whatever I planned wouldn't have panned out, though, so there's that. Still, sent me down from 2k to 4k, but I've gained ground in the only league I play with friends, so I still have bragging rights with them (and that's what this game is all about, right? 😉 ).

                                Tiered system similar to Sky.

If a player completes a certain number of crosses, key passes, chances created, clearances/blocks, tackles they get a bonus point. They also get minus points for missing a clear chance or a mistake leading to a goal.

Surprised they have the in-depth stats to do it but I really like it already, seems a fair and objective system.

I'd like two Brann defenders, I have
Hedenstand, Worm, Tonne, Nilsen and Granli.
Replace Granli from that lot? Ill have enough when I replace Helland

Not sure if it's worth moving for another tbh. Hedenstad and Wormgoor are great picks, Hedenstad just as good (or maybe better) than a Brann defender. Tønne and Nilsen have a lot of attacking threat, so it's hard to bench them every week. Unless you plan to go four at the back, it's not worth it IMO. You probably have more pressing issues elsewhere.

                          Current team:
                          Hansen
Wormgoor - Tønne - Eggen Hedenstad - Nilsen - Teniste

                          (Barli - Haugen - Floki - Vetlesen

Looking at options for Haugen (injured) and Kabran/Floki (but don't know who to prioritize getting out). Thoughts?
Also considering if upgrading Vetlesen and going with two up top might be an option, too? Several good options in midfield.

Kabran's going for me, but more difficult choice between the two. Honestly can't pick a favourite.

3-5-2 looks appealing, particularly with value options in midfield, but not sure if that will persist.
But at least you already have Bendtner so don't have to worry too much about allocating funds, then changing your mind later.

Kabran gone for me already for Akintola. Floki and Ohi might survive another week, Haugen too if he's injury not too serious. Might just do Afeez>Berntsen and bench Haugen. Awaiting more news on the injury.

I can't decide between Akintola and Berntsen. Akintola's returns, average position and stats are incredible for his price, but Berntsen's also great and arguably better fixture next week.

I'm most likely getting both as mentioned, and shift to 3-5-2. Both very cheap anyway, so a shift back to 343 is easy.

Bendtner might become Søderlund eventually, too. You are right that 3-5-2 might not persist - then again, it helped my FPL season, and the Eliteserien midfield options are almost too good not to get.

Right now I agree. I meant more in terms of having the flexibility to revert to 3-4-3 without multiple hits.

Yeah, that's the issue. The cheap options in midfield might make it possible to keep some cash in the bank, though - which will make a formation change less difficult.

Berntsen is just an extra 0.6 over the cheapest bench fodders I don't think a switch to 3-5-2 will make it hard to revert back to 3-4-3, as long as you got Berntsen in there.

To be clear I wasn't saying your squad didn't suit the switch, just a general opinion on it. Bendtner also acts as quite a handy distribution pot should it be needed, esp given world cup duties coming up.

I have similar with Helland, but undecided what I'm doing with him & therefore approah going forward. In the meantime though these cheap mids offer a good solution for opting to bench likes of Karlsen/Floki until decision made.

Yeah, I get that. I'm just saying Berntsen looks like such a good pick at the moment and he's barely more expensive than a bench fodder.

I also do agree with you on the latter. Floki could easily have scored today and I think he'll continue to play most games. He's a strong first sub to put in when needed IMO.

I do have to say Skålevik seems to have cemented his place up front for Brann. He's not going to score a crazy amount of goal (20+) I think, but he offers great value at the moment. Can't get him unless I get rid of Haugen though, as I already got three Brann players.

Hadn't really though about Braut Håland myself. I guess playing time isn't the most important thing if he's on the bench most of the time. A bit of 'set-and-forget' choice from a better team.

For me he's a captaincy shout if he starts in good fixtures. Looked very good the last two, so he should start at the weekend as well. Nothing certain with Molde though, he's only 17 as well and he's likely to leave for a big club in the summer.. So it might be just 5-8 gameweeks before you have to get rid

That's a good point. Floki might be safer (and cheaper) in that regard, but won't necessarily give the same returns. Need to think about that one, but it's a transfer to consider, that's for sure.

Skalevik will be my Karlsen replacement. Team's on fire *boom tish* and probably best upcoming fixture run, after Odd. Don't yet know enough about Håland to comment really.

Problem's just prioritising between that, another cheap mid, fixing a defender, RBK fwd, Helland decision. Could do with another wildcard.

Helland should be fine at least, still think he'll come good.. And there's not a lot of tempting replacements in that range.

Helland is a difficult one. He sure cost a lot, but should bring returns. Then there's the Rosenborg team, which hasn't really impressed at all. Could change at any point though.

Had a look at a possible 3-5-2 formation. For a -4 (or waiting a week with the last transfer), I can get a 5 man midfield of Berntsen, Åsen, Nguen, Ejuke and Akintola - leaving 0.5 to spend later.

The issue with that 5 man midfield is how do you get in a premium midfielder or two if they start firing?

Hm… would mean downgrading one of Nguen/Ejuke to a 4.5-ish option, and upgrading the other. Bendtner to Pedersen another option, as well.

Pick one of these on WC:

                                        1) Rolantsson
                                        2) Teniste
                                        3) Acosta

I think Teniste is the safest pick. He's playing brilliantly. He did finish the game with an injury though, so monitor..

Rolantsson has the highest ceiling though. Kristiansen was subbed with an injury, so he could continue at LB and if so he's not a better option than Teniste. He will probably play LW a lot, but Marengo is also pushing for starts.. I think Rolantsson will play most, maybe everything, but he could miss out now and then. That's the risk with him.

If you want to play it safe, go Teniste. If you want to take a small risk, go Rolantsson.

Yes outstanding PTB, his worst performing player in the 11 ( Bendtner) was also one of the most expensive.
His bench was not too bad as well. No sitting at an OR of 204 and all the chips other than PTB still available.

This rounds PTB shananigans is unbelievable, we'll not see the likes of this again. Sad part is there are a lot of competent managers who got in on the action, so breaking in to the top is going to be a looooong and grueling job now, and requires some magic from remaining chip(s). Thankfully it's early in the season, or I'd have a little cry...

I do not think I have even got to the stage when I have enough information to make a push and attack the season, so I am happy with my OR at the moment (even if it dips a wee bit). My biggest concern is when to use my first WC to push a bit harder. The big price players will be making an impact in the next few weeks and then the internationals and world cup come into consideration.
I am aiming at top 1k at season end and stand at 2.5k now. Pre season I was expecting to be 5k at this stage.

I know what you mean about the wildcard, I thought I may use it straight after the dgw but happy to sit with team and remove STB one by one after this week. May keep WC for injury crisis, is the only one WC in FES?

I got 51 from mine and pleased with that. A base score of 80 from 5 defenders in two games each means an average PPG of 8 from all of them, easy to see why such high scores were possible.

Defenders are some best player in FES, I reckon 5 man def is a legit strategy over the season.

                                            Linde (Barli)
Wormgoor (k), Teniste, Hedenstad (Tønne, Kack)
                                            Berntsen, Hestad, Koomson, Brochmann (Jradi)
                                            Pedersen, Karlsen, Ohi

Gtg for the weekend? Feels wrong to bench Jradi again but out of form and they have RBK, holding for BG next week.

I dropped Jradi for last week but have a feeling he could get something at RBK. Bench Karlsen and lay Jradi? I am still on Ohi for K fwiw and i like your forward line better than mine. 🙂 so GTG

Jradi out of form, but so is definitely Brochmann too! I'd bench either Brochmann or Karlsen for Jradi I think.

Kaptain Wormgoor, seems wrong on a def but I love me an Alonso cap in FPL!

Over a season Wormgoor could be the best pick for cap if you did the same every week!

I’m playing Brochmann for his fixture, both Jradi and Karlsen have home matches but I think I’d go Jradi for what it’s worth. Higher ceiling in my probably ill informed mind!

Maybe bench Hestad if we think Odd will be in usual Def mode?

A lot of possible targets: I'd look at Søderlund, Skålevik, Ejuke, Akintola, Hedenstad

Wonder if Rosenborg will keep playing both Bendtner and Søderlund up top? It hasn't worked so good as you'd expect after that Molde match.

Nevertheless, Søderlund is one I'm looking at as a Bendtner replacement. Søder's constant pressing will have to lead to some goals.

Yeah, not sure myself. I'm still monitoring, but I think Bendtner only has four gameweeks left before he leaves for the World Cup. At that point Søderlund's definitely coming in for me, maybe earlier.

That's true. Might be worth getting rid soon, because of World Cup. Might be my transfer next week, if no injuries, etc.

Karsen to Skalavik for one transfer.
Karlsen to Soderlund and make a downgrade elsewhere to pay for it. You probably need some RBK coverage for when they perform, (either in defence of attack). Soderlund or Reginiussen are not bad value. Heland is too expensive at the moment but his time will come.
I see your OR is number 1 in India 🙂 congratulations.

1 or 2 from Akintola, Skalevik and Reginiussen/Hedenstad for me.

I’m not too sold on Koomson as a source of fantasy points. He is great IRL and will haul I’m sure but I don’t know if it’ll be often enough for £8.5m?

Money not really an issue though. Koomson starting to come alive now, should have had an assist yesterday and could have scored. I wouldn't sell him at this point, with the form and fixtures Brann have.

Yeah, probably right to keep with good fixtures but he seems to be relying mostly on Bonus at the moment.

Top score is 6 for a single game so far, just feel that other Brann players are offering more for less money.
