Wildcards change shape of top 10k FPL squads in Gameweek 9

Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

Given their fixtures and the massive rotation risk, is Mendy sufficient City cover? I have Aguero and Mendy, but I've had it with Aguero's limited minutes. I could swap him to any one of their midfielders.

    Moura, Aguero > Sterling, Arnie/Mitro (-4)
    Or
    Aguero > Vardy

Mendy was non existent as an attacking threat yesterday with Sane on the pitch. His assist papers over that

That said, when Sane doesn’t play, he’ll be popular

Non existent? 6 crosses, 5 into the 18 yard box, 1 assist, 3 shot assists and 1 big chance created. What more do you want..!?

Let them do it. 2 weeks time is Southampton at home we could do with culling some of the Kun ownership.

It's the minutes for me. 60 mins a week for a premium forward isn't enough. I'd rather he played 90 every week then missed a whole game once in a while like sterling

They are one and the same issue. He doesn’t get the chance to be involved in late City goals against tired defences because he’s already been subbed. Time to get rid I think

Sorry but this feels very kneejerky and ignores the data and sight test.
Aguero had a hatful of chances yesterday and could easily have had 3 goals before he went off - his radar was slightly off today but weI'd rather have the player who's getting the chances every match than one who isn't right?

Who else are you picking from the City attack? Sterling, Mahrez, Silva, Sane, Jesus? I hate to point out the obvious but all of these players have less points than Sergio and ALL are rotation risks.

It's not even as if there's a compelling alternative up front elsewhere.
Kane looks limp so far, Lukaku is out of sorts, Vardy hardly consistent, Firmino's been inconsistent and rotated,, etc. Granted Lacazette and Aubameyang are looking in form but you need to pick the right one and believe Arsenal form will continue, also its not impossible to get Lacazette and Aguero (which looks like it could be the new template).

From a consistency pov Sergio is solid (delivered at least 6 points in 5 out of the last 6 games (the other one being the goalless Liverpool match) and of course we know on his day he's capable of getting enough chances for a monster haul - which he could (and probably should) have done this week judging by the highlights!

You make some good points. But also your point on other city assets is the crux of my original question. Aguero is 7th in form for strikers, but 2nd in cost, heading into stiffer fixtures and Champs League. So actually, are city attackers worth the outlay?

You have to decide if a certain 65 mins is better than an uncertain 90 mins as far as City attacking options are concerned. I do think KDB will become the closest to nailed-on in the City midfield in the next few GW's, though...

Exactly. It's a tough call. Like the guy says above, is rather have Aguero going into Soton at home, but when he comes off after 60mins I'll be irritated

He will come off again as he has shaktar midweek again.Tired of missing big hauls after capping him and coming off after 60 mins.Except that fixture none of the others look like captain candidates in the near future and I would rather captain hazard at home to palace playing 90 mins

I have the same problem with Aguero minutes. He has started every game but is taken off as soon as the game is secure. I have almost removed him so many times over the last week but even with his minutes managed he's scored 3 in 4. Not sure you can sell on that basis can you?

Mendy is bolted. Of players who start every game, he's top of the list on a points per match basis. If he'd not missed 3 he'd be top of the points table no doubt.

No big hitter in the front 3 isn't a problem if you're not planning to captain Aguero in the near future. If he has no big hitter in the front 3, he'll have an extra big hitter in midfield. Same thing.

The -8 to bring in Sterling this week was always too risky though.

I did the same as him, yes it backfired, but apart from the tiny problem of getting a premier striker i think his team is refreshing, clearly plays with a little more gambling, which one could hardly say about some of the other. If you look closer to how he put his team up, you will see that it is logic behind it. Could get a 100 pointer next week.

best options for the following, have 10.7m

    Patricio Foster
Alonso Robbo Doherty XXX -- awb
Salah Rich Maddison Hazard — stephens
    Kun King XXX

    A: Mendy + Kamara
    - play 442 till i WC in gw15/16.
    - poor bench incase mendy gets rested
    - King is the big issue from gw11 when fixtures nosedive. ideas? robbo/king >> maguire/arnie (-4)?

    B: Schindler + Ings + 0.6m
    - play 343 or 442 depending on fixtures as i can play schindler ahead of ings or doherty for their tough fixtures plus have a better bench
    - will do King >> Arnie/Mitro in gw11

    Fab, Foster
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, Duffy, AWB
    Salah, Hazard, Rich, Fraser, Hughes
    Aguero, Wilson, Mitro

Sorry for posting again, different options below. Starting to lose ground in my mini leagues.

    Patricio,
    Trippier, Alonso, TAA
    Hazard, Richarlison, Maddy, Fraser
    Arnie, Kun, Kane
    Subs: Hamer, AWB, Doherty, Obiang

    A. Kane & Fraser for Salah & Ings

    B. Kane & Maddy for Salah & Wilson

    C. Kane & TAA to Mendy & Vardy/Zetty.

    D. Keep Kane and chill!

Do these make sense as my next two moves or something else? Will do the Arnie move the week after next given Ings has Newcastle at home.

    Tomkins > Duffy
    Ings > Arnie (week after)

    Patricio
    Robbo - Mendy - AWB
    Salah - Haz - Rich - Fraser
    Aguero - Mitro - Ings

    Hart = Tomkins - Cairney - Bednarek

Lot of people having a go at Aguero’s minutes. Could you point in the direction of the strikers playing 90 mins every game and scoring more points than Aguero please?

That’s the kicker.. would take 65 mins of him spearheading the City attack over most others playing 90 for inferior clubs.

Flawed logic. He scored, why is that not enough? No other striker has scored yet I don’t think. Laca to be determined. The fact that he could’ve had a hat trick is still way more than any other striker this week

This is what I'm contemplating but not this week..Chelsea have some great fixtures till city's fixtures clear up..so Alonso can still be dangerous and highly owned too...I'll reanalyse next week

I think keeping a Alonso or at least a Chelsea defender is smart. Plus you don't particularly need to bring Mendy in this week against Spurs. How about something like Trippier to Rudiger/D.Luiz this week (double Chelsea defence against Burnley 'should' be a clean sheet), then with that cash Alonso to Mendy the week after?

      1. seanmcging

I agree on holding Alonso for at least another week, it was the Spurs game that stopped me swapping Trippier for Mendy, seemed a bit sideways. I can handle another couple of rises & still afford to replace Alonso. Thanks guys.

    Few questions

    1. Is martial now an option ,that 7-8 price bracket is short of options & with utd looking in less shambles martial can reap rewards as he did last 2 weeks ,but rotation with Sanchez on cards. So what say?

    2. If you have to pick one KDB/mane given both are fit to play ...mane has fixtures but form is poor,KDB can be a nailed city player delivering consistent returns ,fixtures bit meh!

    3. Is Arnautovic a good option, I know hammers have great run of fixtures but scoring form has been poor.

Also if Murray injured ,can locadia be a cheap bench player ??

    Thanks guys

Martial's stats are in the toilet. The last two weeks has been a Holebas-style overperformance of epic proportions. Good luck sustaining it.

I'd probably go for KDB, he's a much more interesting pick.

      Arnie is a great option.

      Avoid Locadia at all costs.

I think you need to consider Crystal Palace's difficult upcoming fixtures (5 games from now) + Lucas Moura rotation risk (+Tottenham's fixtures get nice after GW15).
Arnautovic and Mane allegedly easy run of games 🙂

There is no debate for me. Just think about spreading the transfer in two game week in order to no -4 points.
If I were in your shoes I will choose Mane for that GW, considering West Ham vs Leicester, and next GW swap Zaha with Arnautovic 🙂

Stats are solid, has an excellent run of fixtures coming up, looks hungry for goals (I say as someone who has hardly seen him play this season).

Looking at FPL points as a measure of who makes a good option is often a really bad idea.
