Hazard haul proves he cannot be ignored with Chelsea fixtures

Eden Hazard hung most premium Fantasy Premier League assets out to dry in Gameweek 17.

He was the star of the show as Chelsea beat Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

We’ve got all the talking points from the Amex Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 1-2 Chelsea

Goals: Solly March (£5.0m) | Pedro (£6.3m), Eden Hazard (£10.9m)

Assists: Bernardo (£4.2m) | Hazard, Willian (£7.3m)

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) continued to show he cannot be ignored for Fantasy inclusion as he registered his fifth double-figure haul of the season against Brighton. With a goal and five assists in his last four matches, at an average of 7.5 points per game, he has proved his doubters wrong. Despite claims that his chance creation counted little when those around him couldn’t finish, no Premier League player has more assists from Gameweek 14 onwards than him. The Belgian now looks a serious captain candidate on several occasions over Christmas too. Chelsea have very favourable fixtures on the horizon, with Leicester (home), Watford (away), Crystal Palace (away) and Southampton (home) their next four opponents.

For a second match running, Hazard was used a false-nine with Olivier Giroud (£7.7m) on the bench and Álvaro Morata (£8.5m) left out of the matchday squad entirely. The latter picked up an injury in Chelsea’s Europa League outing on Thursday night but has not been in the form worthy of inclusion anyway. It sounds like manager Maurizio Sarri intends to continue using Hazard as the furthest forward player in his line-up, with Pedro (£6.3m) and Willian (£7.3m) flanking him. That only adds to Hazard’s appeal over the winter period, with Giroud and Morata rumoured to be replaced in the January transfer window.

“I think that, for us, (Hazard) could be very important in this position. He’s very able to come out and play with his team-mates, he is very able to create spaces. Now I think that, in that position, he has to improve in attacking the box.” – Maurizio Sarri

However, Hazard’s owners and anyone looking to sign him for Gameweek 18 will have to track his fitness over the coming days. He was substituted in the second half at the Amex Stadium after taking a knock on the ankle. Sarri is not too concerned but it will be sensible just to see what is said about him in the next Chelsea press conference before making any decisions on him.

“It was only a knock. It shouldn’t be a big problem.” – Maurizio Sarri

While Hazard rewarded those who had shown faith in him, the same was not true for Marcos Alonso (£7.0m). In fact, he came away with his third successive blank away from home, averaging just 0.67 FPL points per game in those fixtures. It could have been a different story as he rattled the Brighton woodwork in the second half with a rasping shot, but minutes later the hosts had wiped out his clean sheet. There will be some Alonso owners considering themselves lucky to have got one point out of him as he could easily have been sent off. The Spaniard probably should have been booked for a foul in the first half, which meant that his yellow card for a push on Anthony Knockaert (£5.4m) in the second would have seen him leave the pitch. However, such was his position when committing that foul on the Seagulls’ forward that it the eyes of many, that incident alone warranted a red card.

“My first impression was that it was a red card. Having seen it again, I do understand that it’s a difficult decision with the pace on the ball and whether Solly would have been right through. I can understand that a bit. I still think there are referees who would have sent him off as the last man. But he should have been on a yellow card anyway. He pulled back Anthony, which is generally always a yellow card. There were two incidents. He should have been on a yellow. If someone pulls someone back on more than one occasion, it should be a yellow.” – Chris Hughton

Sarri might consider rotating one of either Pedro and Willian in the near future. Not least because of the congested nature of the upcoming schedule, but also because they struggled with concentration at times against Brighton. While they both registered attacking returns, there were multiple occasions for each one when they were needlessly caught offside. Hazard showed no such problems, timing his runs through the middle to perfection, especially when he went through to score Chelsea’s second goal.

Mateo Kovacic (£5.8m) came through his injury doubt to start for the second match in a row, and the fifth time in Chelsea’s last six league outings. Ross Barkley (£5.6m), for the fourth time in six Gameweeks, had to settle only for a substitute’s appearance.

It was also a disappointing afternoon for Glenn Murray (£6.6m) owners as he was substituted in the 59th minute, seemingly for tactical reasons. He was replaced by Florin Andone (£5.0m), meaning just a second blank in home matches for the veteran forward.

There was a fifth consecutive start for Pascal Groß (£6.7m) but he continues to offer little in the way of attacking or creative potential. Furthermore, in his latest run in the side, he has completed just one match.

His return has seen Solly March (£5.0m) pushed back to his more natural position of left-winger, and it was him who scored Brighton’s only goal of the game. The Seagulls were in the ascendancy in the second half as Chelsea took their foot off the gas and March was in the right place at the right time when Bernardo (£4.2m) headed back across goal. The midfielder controlled well and smashed the ball over the line from close-range. March has now been involved in five Brighton goals in his last seven outings and created more chances than any of his colleagues against Chelsea. The next two fixtures are tricky for Chris Hughton’s men with Bournemouth (away) and Arsenal (home) up next, but March could present a cheap midfield option for Gameweek 20 when Everton come to the Amex Stadium.

Owners of any Chelsea defensive asset may want to lay the blame at the door of the officials. They were unhappy with the state of Ruben Loftus-Cheek‘s (£5.2m) socks as he was preparing to come on and asked him to tape them up before allowing him to take to the field. It was while he was doing this, that Brighton got the ball over the line. However, given that the hosts were enjoying a purple patch, it is unlikely Loftus-Cheek’s presence would have made much difference.

Hughton still seems a fan of rotating in the full-back areas. Martin Montoya (£4.3m) was preferred to Bruno (£4.4m) on Sunday, after missing out on Gameweek 16. However, Bernardo has now made five consecutive starts at left-back in place of Gaëtan Bong (£4.5m). It was Leon Balogun (£4.2m) who filled in for the suspended Shane Duffy (£4.6m) once again, who still has one match left on his current suspension.

Brighton XI (4-1-4-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Balogun, Montoya; March, Stephens, Pröpper, Knockaert (Locadia 83′); Groß (Bissouma 81′); Murray (Andone 59′).

Chelsea XI (4-3-3): Kepa; Alonso, Rudiger, Luiz, Azpilicueta; Kovacic (Kovacic 75′), Jorginho, Kante; Pedro (Loftus-Cheek 66′), Hazard (Giroud 83′), Willian.

Hazard is only with it for the captaincy though. Do we have enough options already?

You only think it’s worth getting hazard if you captain him?

Yeah, for me 11m is still not great value if you're not capping regularly. As long as you have good players to cover all decent fixtures then no single expensive player is essential.

That said I'm definitely looking at getting him back. When Chelsea's fixtures start looking as good as Spurs' then he is a better shout than Kane 🙂

I think this perception that there’s no point having a heavy hitter unless you captain him the majority of the time is incorrect.

In your eyes it must be wrong to have more than two heavy hitters?

Il be owning Salah/sterling/hazard, but hazard being the least I capatain out of the three. But he’s still going to score me a stack lod of points and be a reliable income of points for me...... don’t think there’s anything wrong with owning some heavy hitters that you don’t captain regularly, but thats just me personally 🙂

He is cheaper than sterling, Kane, Auba, Aguero, Salah and is a captaincy option alongside them so I'm not sure what your point is

He was injured for most of them & after blanking is still is the highest points scorer so I'd take that !

I understand the argument but with the big hitters being rotated I think it is better to have a choice of captaincy at the moment ... I have captained Kun, Salah, Kane, Laca & Hazard this season with reasonable results ... the cheap enabler options like Ings, Rondon, Fraser, Jiminez, Snodgrass etc allows the cash to afford carrying a few heavy hitters

If Kola is likely to start then keep him, if he is out this game week replace him

Midweek teams will give you more of an idea, but I think Sterling and Eriksen were rested to play midweek and the following Saturday

You team is fine, you just need to let it run for a few games rather than take hits

Well its been a tough few last 2 or 3 weeks. Dropped all the way to 30k. Here's what I had in mind
Ings, hazard and a 4.8 def(maybe tarkowski) in for Lacazette, Camarasa and Bellerin for a -8
Know the -8 is heavy but largely don't expect much from camarasa and Bellerin obviously is out. Tired of Emerys Lacazette merry go round too

I was thinking yesterday about whether it might be worthwhile switching to a power midfield 5 so:

    Salah, Hazard, Sane, Fanderson, Richarlison

This would mean losing the likes of Kane and Auba but I feel like someone like Hazard could match them. Plus if needs be I could trade down one of my premium mids to get a striker in.

My strikers would be something similar to Marks structure - Wilson, Jiminez, Chica

What are people's thoughts of going heavier in midfield and lighter up top?

      It's what I've done.
I feel there are some good value strikers getting goals to make this work.
      I have that same midfield.

No need to ditch kane in the process.
      I am thinking of having
      Fabs
      Doherty, Robbo,Digne,Schindler, awb
      Hazard,Sane,sterling, siggy,fando
      Kane,Ings/Jimmy, Kmara

      By doing laca+Hojbjerg+Dunk >> Jimmy/ings + fando+ digne

You'd need to reduce one of the premium defender IMO

      1. GuillermoDickero
        • 9 Years

Only thing with this midfield Vs the one I suggested is that it's Salah-less

I guess if you went sterling instead of Salah and reduced a premium defender then you'd be able to keep Kane

I could always switch out a premium mid for a 4.5 and get Kane or Auba in.

By the way, David, love the write-ups but I would strongly advise against what I would call chain of event fallacies which are such are a trap for any sports journalist.

"[Alonso] probably should have been booked for a foul in the first half, which meant that his yellow card ... in the second would have seen him leave the pitch".

Clearly this is false. If he had been booked in the first half, that would have changed the course of the game (the course of history!). He would have walked away from the booking in a slightly different way, taken up a slightly different position on the pitch, and everything that happened after that would have been a distinct sequence of events.

He MAY have ended up fouling Knockaert at exactly the same point in the second half, but probably not. He might have been booked again earlier, or later, or he could have scored a hat trick. What we do know is that THAT booking could not have happened.

Yet to make the decision of digne/doherty this week. Just a rough plan now

My actual team in FPL is:

    Fabianski - Hennesey
VVD - LaPorte - Alonso - Wan Bissaka - Doherty
Sanè - Salah Fraser - Richarlison - Billing
    Chicharito - Aubameyang - Jimenez

    Bank: 2.0
    FT: 1

For next GWs, make sense cut Jimenez and replace him with Ing, or other?
    Keep Auba or cut?

    Thanks

      Jimenez has Fulham after Liverpool.

Would highly consider saving a FT with that as the only unfavourable fixture for a potentsial starting XI is Richarlison.

Ok..but in this case how to choose the team for next GW?

        Fabianski
        laporte - VVD - alonso
        sane - salah (C) - richarlison - fraser
        chicharito - auba - jimenez?

make sense jimenez in versus liverpool?

bench: hennesey - wanbissaka - doherty - billing

I've been thinking - you just need to ride out this festive period with your squad and not make too many changes. I got away with it this weekend with:

    Hart
    AWB Doherty Chambers
    Salah Pedro Son Sane
    Auba Kane Rash

Bench: Button, Bennett, Kola & Billing

I captained Kane and was cursing as I was going to go with Auba - on another day he could have had a hattie. Had 'some' Haz coverage with Pedro and Sane also helped. Cheeky AWB for Kola too which was nice.
I am going to just try and nail the captain choice rather than spend ages transferring in and out, unless any of you guys have any advice? I know my defence is weak, but my OR is ok at mo.

Cheers guys and good luck over the festive period

      Kola is doubtful.

Would you trust Auba with captaincy this week against Burnley at home? 2 armband flops in a row :/

Can do Billing and Kane to Hazard and Ings/Mitro/Wilson for a - 4.

    Rest of team :
    Fabs (Hamer)
    Alonso Doherty Duffy Robbo WB
    Son Sane Felipe Siggy Billing
    Chicarito Auba Kane

    Thoughts?

Just feel Kane looks off form. I know it was a hard midweek game against Barca, but for that prize I expect more and that goes for the season all together.

Losing Aubameyang to get Hazard seems like the jerkiest of knee-jerks to me, especially for a hit. This used to be called points-chasing.

I'm not saying that Hazard is a bad addition but his next 2 games are against fairly good defences. They are not prime 'haul' games. And he did go 6 games without a goal before yesterday. I love Hazard as a player and in FPL but think GW20 is soon enough for him, the main reason to go earlier would be price rises ➡ which generate jerky knees ➡ which generate transfers and hits ➡ which generate price rises. People are incredibly fickle nowadays and that has become increasingly the way of it in FPL. Look at Martial, the FFS herd have jumped off in droves and driven his price down just before an amazing sequence of fixtures when he was only ever going to be out a couple of weeks.

Aubameyang, on the other hand, is a prolific goalscorer, has been everywhere he has been and has been for Arsenal too. He has Burnley, Brighton, Fulham and West Ham among his next 5 games; do you seriously want to lose him before that?

Everyone wants Hazard now because he scored and assisted yesterday. They can say there are other reasons but that's the driving reason; had he blanked, however unluckily, there would be no stampede. Next week everyone may want Aubameyang & Kane again; the week after, if Hazard has blanked twice while Aubameyang and/or Kane has scored twice, they'll be taking hits in the opposite direction. Fact is that Aubameyang was the player last weekend that undershot his xG by the biggest amount; 0.71 xG and no goal. If he were an erratic player you'd discount that but he isn't, he's a superb finisher. On another day he gets a brace.

Essentially my position is that it may be wise to take note of the VR playbook here; to be a bit patient with proven players and to wait for the points to come to you rather than going chasing them. 😯

I'm guessing you don't own Hazard and can't afford him?

I generally agree though but he looked really good yesterday and the fixtures are still very good

I don't have him at the moment but could easily get him should I want to (without a hit). I prefer to wait with the players I have.

Did Auba have 2 shots blocked by GK early 2nd half? They the only reason for the high xG

I'd imagine Milik had a high xG against Liverpool because of Allison's monster save. There's a reason for that too: more often than not he scores in that position. That's how xG works, TM.

I agree with alot you are saying here. However, when it comes to Hazard i feel he has a totally different role now than he has had earlier seasons. Sarri has made his Chelsea totally dependent on him. The reasons you post is why im considering loosing Kane and not Auba. Auba has been doing well or at least ok this season, Kane has not.

As it is now i dont have any offensive Chelsea coverage, as Alonso does not give anything offensive back and he has not been for a long time, except the occasional assist. His 3-4 first GWs was exceptional, and all Alonso owners is waiting for the same to happen again, but in vain so far.

I can see you are against the Auba move, but what about the Kane transfer, also a knee jerk? Could bring me either Sterling or Haz in on midfield and a low prize attacker (they have been doing as good as the premium ones this year).

Losing Kane I'd have more sympathy with as he hasn't looked at his best all season. But my argument would be; surely you knew that before bringing him in?

Probably, like me, you looked at his long-term fixtures and decided that they were good enough to compensate for him not being at his absolute peak. Form follows fixtures sometimes. Maybe, like me, you also hoped that Eriksen playing regularly would rescue Kane from dropping deeper; if so then yesterday just demonstrates that when Lamela & Moura start and Eriksen doesn't, Kane is less of a threat because he drops off more.

I feel that I knew all this before I got Kane and that it is too soon to abandon ship. Maybe I shouldn't have got on that ship but only time will tell; sometimes you need to give a plan a chance to play out. What I don't want to do is to shift erratically from one idea to another. The one thing that is certain about doing that is the aggregation of negative points from hits.

Yeah i did know that, and as you say the last game against Burnley got me second guessing my choice. But as you also stated it was a litle bit different game than what i expected due to Son and Eriksen not playing and therefor making Kane drop low. I can see from your record that you know your way around FPL, personally i only started taking it serious this year, and at the moment i am seeing the benefit of watching youtube and listening on podcasts.
Yet again posting in here gives me great feedback and help. Thanks to all that gave their 2 cents.

I think i am going to sit tight for a little while, giving Kane the benefit of the doubt and follow my plan for christmas keeping him in!

I own Hazard since gw 4.
          Never lost faith.
Got laca for auba and both are fails.
For all his goods Auba has hauled 3 times & twice against tiring Fulham+leister defenses.
He scored in the match when kun got injured so all the love started for him.
I've owned him & he is frustratingly unpredictabl so very bad captain choice for me.
Kane+Hazard on other hand are proven campaigners !!

Never said for hits but think that way !

Keeping faith with Auba Kane frontline is already proving tough with Hazard already on trolling duty after owning through his blanks.

Essentially I can keep or do Obiang to Hazard and downgrade a big hitting striker to a bargain basement type. Any thoughts?

I think if you own Hazard you have to live with the fact that he always carries that ankle problem that will get him benched every once in a while. Still, when he plays, he is usually worth it.
