Martial could make mockery of £7.5m price tag this year

Wish the summer and your weekend afternoons goodbye, as it’s that time of the year again… Fantasy Premier League is back.

As we hurtle towards the Gameweek 1 deadline, Fantasy Football Scout has all the information, advice and tips you need to help you with your team.

Our best XI for the opening weekend comes out later on Friday but for now, we have something for you mavericks out there.

If you want something slightly different to the crowd, here are three players with low ownership that may be worth considering for Gameweek 1…

Anthony Martial

Martial could do well for Manchester United this year if he gets a run in the team

Price: £7.5m

Ownership: 5.0%

GW1 Opponent: Chelsea (H)

There is no denying that Manchester United did not finished the 2018/19 season on a high. As soon as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was offered the manager’s role on a permanent basis things began to take a turn for the worse as the Red Devils agonisingly missed out on a coveted Champions League spot.

If there’s one person who could help turn things around with a run in the side, it is Anthony Martial

He averaged an attacking return every 115 minutes in the Premier League last season.

Despite being listed as a midfielder he often plays in advanced positions, such as a centre forward on three occasions during pre-season.

His record of scoring 34 goal in 113 Premier League games is very reasonable, especially when considering his FPL price tag (£7.5m) and position.

Historically, a combination of injuries, rotation and being subbed off often limited his game time.

With that said, he is one of United’s most experienced attacking players and, fitness permitting, he should start matches regularly and will be relied upon to perform at his best on a consistent basis.

Manchester United will be up against a transitional Chelsea team on the opening weekend.

Interestingly, the last time Martial featured against them he scored a brace in a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s defence has not looked too solid in pre-season and they have just lost David Luiz (£6.0m) to Arsenal.

After last season’s woes, Manchester United will want to get off to a good start and players like Martial will need to make more of a difference with improved motivation.

Kyle Walker-Peters

Kyle Walker-Peters (left) in action for Spurs this summer

Price: £5.0m

Ownership: 3.03%

GW1 Opponent: Aston Villa (H)

Kyle Walker-Peters was far from being one of Tottenham’s firstchoice full-backs last season, but a unique opportunity has presented itself to the youngster.

The departure of Kieran Trippier to La Liga and the injuries to Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth have unexpectedly brought him to the fore.

Walker-Peters has only featured in nine Premier League games during his entire career and yet averages an assist for every 112 minutes played.

Moreover, last season, 32% of his touches were in the final third of the pitch.

Of course, three of Walkers-Peters’ assists came from one game, but it provides an evident glimpse of attacking capabilities.

In fact, you won’t get many other starting £5.0m defenders from last season’s top four, espcially not at wing-back.

The transfer window has now closed and Tottenham’s did not sign any new right-sided defenders.

Walker-Peters may not be a hugely long-term option and may need transferring/wildcarding out when Foyth or Aurier comes back but we don’t know exactly when that will be yet.

Tottenham kick start their campaign against newly promoted Aston Villa in Gameweek 1, a favourable fixture.

Walker-Peters has a chance to establish himself in the team and with a few good performances he may prolong his presence as a regular starter.

Ashley Barnes

Burnley’s strike force could enjoy their Gameweek 1 opener against Southampton

Price: £6.5m

Ownership: 0.9%

GW1 Opponent: Southampton

Ashley Barnes was a great differential last season, registering 12 goals and 3 assists.

This attacking output alone was responsible for 33% of Burnley’s goals, which shows you how important he is to the team.

There are many other strikers currently priced at £6.5m with similar contributions, such as Josh King, but Barnes has an extra edge.

For every season that he has played in the Premier League he seems to be progressively scoring more goals:

14/15 Premier League season 5 goals in 35 games
16/17 Premier League season 6 goals in 28 games
17/18 Premier League season 9 goals in 36 games
18/19 Premier League season 12 goals in 37 games

The former Austria Under-20 international’s performance trajectory clearly shows that he is getting better at the top-flight level.

He is at the peak of his powers and there isn’t anything stopping him, even if they’ve signed Jay Rodriguez as an additional forward to add to the mix.

Sure, Barnes won’t end the season with 20+ goals, but would it be hard to reject him for your third budget striker spot when he could exceed last season’s points tally?

Burnley start the season with Southampton at Turf Moor. Barnes has scored two league goals in his last two starts against the Saints and he should be more than capable of causing havoc to their backline once again.

Never been as nailed on as he is this season, seemingly. Always had a Lukaku/Zlatan to compete with. Full pre-season. And manager has played him up top often in pre-season. Could be his 'break-out' season, this.

Nobody is going to read this lengthy waffle today, but nevermind. I've just seen the FPL experts' squad on the homepage of the FPL website:

    Pope Button
    Robertson VVD Digne Zinchenko Lundstram
    Salah Sterling Fraser Perez Dendonker
    Wilson King Greenwood

13/15 identical with my squad. And 11+ identical with most of the RMTs on here.

This has crystallised something I thought all last season. I'm an unspectacular but competent FPL manager. I used to get good ranks (top 10k) by making sensible (boring) decisions based on stats, having a balanced squad, minimizing risk etc. Most FPL players didn't do that - nice for me. But now the masses are provided not only with stats and info to process, not only with picks on a GW by GW basis, but also with complete sensible balanced squads to start the season with. Not just from the FPL experts' squad, but from various accounts on youtube, twitter etc. which we all follow and like.

I'm not moaning about progress or "casuals" being spoonfed - just acknowledging the way things are now due to increased popularity of FPL and many sources of info/help/instruction. But I think this new reality must change how we have to play the game. More people are going to start with good balanced squads. And each week, more people will know what the trends are, who the handful of best players to bring in are, etc. Bargains are found and reported widely. More people know the 50/50 calls to think about. Many more people now have the strategy that used to work well for me. My "competitive advantage" has gone - same for others on this site I expect.

I got a good rank last year, but it felt lucky rather than deserved. I got a lot of the 50/50 calls (or the 33/33/33 calls) right, but that was down to luck - by definition (if there are stats pointing you one way, it's not really a 50/50 call). When I got good/bad ranks in the past, it felt like I had played well/badly. Now it feels like I was lucky/ unlucky. Many more players know the right strategies/ tactics, so finshing 10k or 100k seems to boil down to who makes the most 50/50 calls correctly. I think people who usually get a good rank are now very much at risk of 100-150k seasons. Look what happened to The General, Jay Eggersdorff, Ville Ronka - big drop offs in rank last year and I'm guessing they just played the same as they always did.

If the "old" strategy isn't enough of a competitive advantage anymore, then how do you play the game if you don't want it to just boil down to luck on the 50/50s? The only thing I can think of is to get better at predicting player form. It used to be enough to be patient, considered, strategic - it wasn't *so* important to be ahead of the curve on everything. But now I think to beat the large informed crowd, you need to be the first one jumping on/off the right players.

I have no idea how you do this though - it's not what I'm good at. Anyone good at this and willing to share your approach? Don't worry, the pages are going so fast nobody will read your reply!

    TL;DR - better get lucky.

      Have an upvote, sir.

I try to have a bit of fun with the game, and doing calculated risks. Picking overlooked players that might set me apart from the rest. Like the midfield template now is pretty set, with everyone going Moura. But I see no teams with Eriksen for example.

Having seen their teams on the scout cast, I wouldn't say they're going the "boring" route by any means. I see many differentials that makes copying them a huge risk. That is also besides the fact that they don't always announce their last minute transfers or captain changes.

I don't get the impression any of them are marketed as "good". Jonty has an excellent rank history and downplays it if anything. David is marketed as "learning how to be good". The others are all marketed as FPL fans/ obsessives, but they are quite open about having mixed rank histories.

I would, absolultely seek their advice because their opinions are backed up by reasoning and facts. If a particular opinion is just pulled out of the air, they admit that it's just a hunch. Az and Luke in particular make me consider players I haven't already thought of. I usually dismiss them in the end, but maybe that needs to change if I'm right in my theory that everyone has a good "sensible" squad nowadays. Luke/Az go maverick with their own teams but I bet if asked to produce an Experts' pick for FPL they could and would advise sensible picks and structures. David and Jonty in particular supply so many stats and facts during their FPL chats/ scoutcasts, it's helpful for someone who doesn't spend as much time in the members' area as they used to. They aren't paying me anything for saying this by the way.

Nah you have a right to your views mate, fair enough. I just think all this YouTube stuff and cashing in on the game is a bit annoying really, if anything the players with better ranks i'd have more chance of listening to them. All the rest seemed a little shoved down our throats and obviously it spoon feeds which means casual players are now competing. How annoying when you find a gem then you realise somone is broadcasting that knowledge to the masses just for a few likes..

Maybe it's because I been playing from the start and I don't like change really. I kind of think this circus of patreons, people selling spreadsheet and YouTube channels all saying the same thing has killed the game a little but we are in a social media age . Where a big smiley face means more than what you can offer 🙂

That's probably doing yourself a disservice, it can't all be luck. But I do think us FPL managers are too slow to admit when our luck is good (no problem when it's bad though). It used to feel like skill was involved somewhere, but less so nowadays. The last two seasons for me were one bad, one good - both felt like I was doing sensible things, and I just got unlucky once and lucky once. Made both seasons less enjoyable too. So I'm trying to find a new way of thinking about transfer decisions. Not sure if I'll be brave enough to jump early on players though.

I've always been in the "its more luck camp." Don't see where the skill is in this game personally . We had this discussion on another forum.. I think it's more patience and keeping on top of it whilst being stubborn to your own instinct.. like I say it's not like poker where there is maths involved or where you need to be a tactical footballing genius as you can't pick your team after the deadline goes. Intresting to hear people's views though as it's subjective for sure..

I'd like to see correlation of the more naturally patient managers and how they finish..

I agree with everything you said. I had one of my better seasons last year and only ended up at 16K even though I was confident of a 5K finish. it seemed that every time I got a very high score (even when the differentials were scoring) I was still climbing slowly.

With that being said, yes the experts are spoon-feeding the casuals, so the only way to beat that is to actually be better than the experts themselves. That goes along with what you said at the end in terms of predicting player forms better.

I am afraid the only way to do that is via the eye test. The only three seasons which I had too much time to watch EPL are the seasons I ended up in top 9K, 13K, and 16K. Eye test allows you to see things stats can't simply provide.

All that is besides some of the horrific teams some "experts" are piling up by the way >_> If anything some are doing us huge favors.

Also, people are too impulsive and it only takes one different transfer and they wouldn't be able to copy the "experts" again.

Interesting. Unfortunatley I think you're probably right about the eye test being the way to go. It has to be part of your approach surely. I don't watch much football, and I'm terrible at picking players based on my own eye test even if i do. I think a player looks great / is getting in good positions, only for it to amount to nothing when I sign them. Case in point - Tom Cairney last year. I thought he looked great; he ended up never making the team. Have been fooled by Lookman, Mirallas, Iwobe and others in the past. So now I focus on stats/ match reports/ comment pieces instead. Not much good if you're trying to get ahead of the curve.

      Great post ....

      ...but....

The key to success is doing all the things you mentioned in a disciplined manner over the 38 week season. Yes the casual player is now spoon fed all the info but most still play impulsively and thus sub optimally. Consistent solid play over a full season should mean a top 100k rank.

I accept that compared to a few years ago it’s much much harder to get top 10k and much higher than that luck does play a large role.

It is interesting that a lot of the ‘top’ FPL content creators are living off former glory of top 1k ranks from 5 years ago - which is just not comparable to top 1k now. It’s a jungle out there

Just keep trying to raise your game, be consistent and never give up.

Can't say I like the look of the FPL expert squad. Tripple Bournemouth attack is overkill. Perez will be a good prospect but Leicester rank 16th on opening fixtures difficulty. Zinchencko is very short term and a transfer waiting to happen. Pope looks the best of the £4.5m GKs based on fixtures, but I would absolutely piss myself if Joe Hart got a start! Having Heaton as rotation is much better than Pope fire and forget. They have also left out some very good value picks like KDB, Martial and Trossard.

I totally agree with what you are saying Chungwit. Once you have identified the best players for each GW based on underlying stats, it does seem to come down to the 50/50 or 33/33/33 picks.

It's a shame though that isn't it. Or at least it is for me.

I'm not talking about the FPL Experts' squad in particular - there are many others (similar ones) out there from expert-type accounts. But I do agree about the Bournemouth overkill. Jota is too good not to have from the start instead of King, even if King has better fixtures in GW1-2. Fraser is fine for GW1-2 as well (though I'd rather Moura, Siggy or Bilva to avoid the double up). The FPL experts' squad is a good squad, good price points, and the first 2 transfers can be to move on the Bournemouth players.

FWIW, I disagree about Zinchenko - I don't know why Pep would be so keen to reintroduce Mendy quickly after injury when Zinch has performed so well. I think you have a good 4-5 weeks with Zinch before having to trade him out, which is fine. And I'm banking on Leicester not playing by the fixture difficulty rulebook, so think Perez is a good value pick.

Everybody will be captaining Salah, so your return isn't necessarily that great. I'd save it for a more fun and possibly much more rewarding gameweek.

    Zinchenko --》 Naitland Miles done.

Cancelo is destined for the Zinchenko position. Pep made a point of saying he can play left back too

Happy that I could resist a punt on Wesley/Trossard. Instead I went for boring nailed options, I guess that's the best way to play FPL. Not happy that I don't have a player like Haller/Barkley in my team 😛

The question to end all the questions.

    Siggy, Moura, Fraser or Martial?

    1. Gudjohnsen
      • 7 Years

      Moura is short term.

Fraser and Siggy are set and forget players

Martial is the real wild card

      It's a real dilemma

      All good.
Id go Fraser,Siggy,Moura,Martial in that order.

Thanks. Looking for an excuse to get rid of Moura, as one of my mini-leagues doesn't allow Spurs players ...

I would leave the league. Rediculous rule and selfish. Forcing you all avoid them even if you in other leagues

          Ps go Moura...

Well, I will ignore this rule if there's a Spurs player I really want ... I just won't get the prize from that 1 mini league, which as far as I can gather is only an Arsenal mug anyway. I do like Moura, however I think he won't start once Son comes back in GW3.
