Eliteserien Fantasy season preview – Part 2

The teams who finished in the bottom half of 2019’s Eliteserien table feature tempting fantasy options at various price points. Some teams underperformed, some suffered poor late-season results and some saved themselves from relegation at the last minute. Ranheim and Tromsø were automatically relegated, while Lillestrøm’s 45 year stay in Norway’s top-flight came to an end after they surrendered a 5-2 aggregate lead in the final minutes of their playoff. They’re replaced by Aalesund, Sandefjord and Start, whose fortunes in the coming season could vary wildly. Let’s start by looking at last season’s ninth-placed team.

Brann

One of the league’s most vaunted defences put on a decent if unspectacular show, but the attack struggled for goals in 2019 – only Sarpsborg scored fewer than Brann’s total of 32. Vito Wormgoor’s departure sees Vegard Forren (5.5m) join from Molde. Ralf Fährmann had joined on loan, but left before playing a competitive match. Ali Ahamada (6.0m) looks to have the edge over Håkon Opdal (6.0m) in goal.

Winger Gilbert Koomson (7.0m) struggled for end product last season but is kinder on the budget this year. The more consistent Petter Strand, meanwhile, has seen his price rise to 8.0m. Robert Taylor (7.0m) joins from relegated Tromsø to add depth out wide, while former Lillestrøm man Daniel A. Pedersen (5.5m) is a deep-lying midfield option.

Daouda Bamba (9.0m) will hope to better last season’s tally of seven goals. He’ll be backed up by Marcus Mehnert (6.0m) who has scored goals in his young career but is unproven at this level.

Vålerenga

The capital club spent most of last season in the top half but slumped to a disappointing finish. Dag-Eilev Fagermo replaces Ronny Deila as manager.

Last year’s performances see left-footer Aron Dønnum (8.5m) closer in price to Herolind Shala and Bård Finne (both 9.0m). Fredrik Oldrup Jensen (5.0m) may not offer the greatest fantasy returns but could solidify the midfield.

Matthias Vilhjalmsson (8.0m) will lead the line but wasn’t the most explosive prospect for fantasy managers in his first season in Oslo. At the back, meanwhile, Ivan Näsberg (4.5m) could be a cheap route into the defence while Kristoffer Klaesson (5.0m) is now the clear first choice in goal.

Strømsgodset

Despite spending a substantial part of the season in the relegation zone, Henrik Pedersen’s arrival saw a change in fortunes. Last summer’s key signings Mikkel Maigaard, Lars-Jørgen Salvesen and Moses Mawa (all 8.5m) will look to pick up where they left off; the former providing set-piece expertise and bonus points from midfield and the latter pair a potent striking duo.

Herman Stengel (5.0m) enjoyed his best spell of form for Godset under Pedersen. Young Dane Marcus Mølvadgaard (7.0m) and Latvia international Janis Ikaunieks (6.5m) join Kristoffer Tokstad (6.5m) as the mid-price options in midfield.

Godset are the only surviving team from last season with no defensive or goalkeeping options to cost more than 5.0m – perhaps not surprising for the team who conceded the third most goals, with 54. Prosper Mendy (5.0m) faces a long rehabilitation after a knee injury.

Sarpsborg 08

Sarpsborg recorded only five wins last year and averaged just one goal per game, the lowest in the division. They were saved by their ability to keep games close, drawing half of all their matches, and only losing twice at home.

They’re an intriguing fantasy prospect this time around; new manager Mikael Stahre led AIK to a Swedish double in 2009 and will employ a 3-4-3 formation. Sulayman Bojang (4.5m) could provide exceptional value as a wing-back, with Magnar Ødegaard (5.0m) reverting to centre back.

In central midfield, Anton Saletros (5.0m) looks a popular pick at his price point, while Ole Jørgen Halvorsen and (7.0m) and Mohamed Ofkir (6.5m) could occupy attacking positions. The experienced Mos Abdellaoue (7.5m) will no doubt bag a few goals, but will this be the year that Jørgen Strand Larsen (7.5m) takes the league by storm?

Mjøndalen

Unless defender Sondre Solholm Johansen (5.5m) can retain both the goal threat and penchant for bonus points he showed last season, his price looks a bit steep. Newly signed Marcus Nakkim will compete with Quint Jansen (both 4.5m) for the other spot at the back.

Plenty of focus will be on Tonny Brochmann (7.5m) and captain Christian Gauseth (6.0m) who contributed a combined 13 goals from midfield last term. Lars Olden Larsen (7.0m) could add more of the same having scored nine from midfield for KFUM last season. Fredrik Brustad (6.5) was the hero on the final day as his goal kept Mjøndalen up, but had an otherwise indifferent season.

Sondre Liseth (6.0m) put in plenty of running, but he spends a lot of time in wide positions and even for a budget striker his three goals didn’t set the world alight. New signing Ibrahim Shuaibu (6.0m) hadn’t scored an Eliteserien goal for Haugesund since 2017, but has enjoyed two good loan spells at Kongsvinger since then.

Aalesunds FK

The runaway winners of 2019’s OBOS-ligaen won every home match and 17-goal Niklas Castro (8.5m) was the star of the show. Despite a hefty price tag, no player from the promoted sides features in more fantasy teams at time of writing.

Of the two 4.5m goalkeepers here, Gudmund Kongshavn is currently selected by more fantasy managers, but Lars Bohinen has stated that Andreas Lie will start the season as first choice. One-time FPL budget star Jordon Mutch (6.5m) and youngster Simen Bolkan Nordli (7.0m) bolster a midfield featuring the experienced Peter Orry Larsen and Fredrik Carlsen (both 5.0m).

With Torbjørn Agdestein (6.5m) injured, Sigurd Haugen (6.5m) and the 6’5” Holmbert Fridjonsson (7.5m) are the striking options. All three are proven in Norway’s second tier, with Haugen having spent time at Sogndal, but only Agdestein has had a meaningful impact in Eliteserien before.

Sandefjord

Heavily tipped to go straight back down, Rufo (6.5m) should be key if 2019 OBOS-ligaen runners up Sandefjord are to defy expectations. His seven goals in 2018 weren’t enough to save his side from relegation.

New signings Kristoffer Normann Hansen (6.0m) and Erik Næsbak Brenden (5.5m) are two more midfielders who could be tasked with attacking roles. Two young strikers are on the books; Sivert Gussiås (5.5m) joins from Molde having scored 12 while on loan at Strømmen, while George Gibson (5.0m) has been more prolific in pre-season.

Full backs Brice Wembangomo and Anton Kralj (both 5.0m) are the pricier options at the back, while Lars Grorud (4.5m) looks primed to feature in central defence as he approaches his 37th birthday.

IK Start

Martin Ramsland (7.0m), the scorer of the hat-trick which secured promotion in Lillestrøm’s infamous collapse, is injured to start the season, so Steffen Lie Skålevik (6.0m) returns to the side where he scored 10 goals in 11 games in 2017.

Damion Lowe’s contract was terminated after the defender travelled to the United States for family reasons. He was a key man in Start’s last top-flight season, but Vegard Bergan (4.5m) seems a reasonable replacement having featured heavily for Odd and Bodø/Glimt in the last couple of years. Goalkeeper Jonas Deumeland (4.5m) is still around, having been a good source of save and bonus points in 2018.

Aron Sigurdarson was a driving force behind promotion but has since left for Belgium. Can Kevin Kabran (7.0m), Kasper Skaanes (5.5m) or newly signed Eirik Schulze (6.5m) fill the void? Afeez Aremu (4.5m) is a more defensively minded midfielder, but could be a key player and scored three goals in his last Eliteserien season.

TallestJohn
Had Mahrez from the start in 2015-16.

Keep forgetting to write about Eliteserien. Keep getting worse at Allsvenskan.

Rosenborg not playing well tonight. Tempted to transfer out Zachariassen already.

Tagseth looked a lot more lively and attacking than Zachariassen for large amounts of the game.
It was only when Helland went off that Zachariassen started to assert himself on the game a bit more.

I felt as if the game opened up a lot more after Helland's substitution - could have easily gone either way.
The guy was the epicentre of attacks but couldn't quite pull it off.

I think I'm going to hold off on making any changes yet - Zachariassen is a good player and it's the first game of the season.

I definitely see how holding off making any changes is the sensible move, but I can't see many goals from this Rosenborg side (Børven depending). Don't think they'll be up there with the best come the end of the season.

Good point re. Tagseth though. He's worth keeping an eye on.

      Rosenborg 0 - 0 Kristiansund:

      Main RBK highlights:
Helland was running the show before being subbed off. He had a great first half but seemed more frustrated than anything in the second. Heavily involved in set pieces as we know but was quick to retaliate if fouled.
Adegbenro - A lot of forward runs, taking on defenders, drawing out fouls and putting in some half-decent crosses. He's kind of like the Zaha of Eliteserien.
Tagseth seemed to be more with it than Zachariassen although the latter did seem to come to life more after Helland's withdrawal.
Eggen Hedenstad along with Reginiussen were probably Rosenborg's best players. Hedenstad took over set-piece duty and forward runs down the right after Helland was taken off.
Islamovic looked alone up front and far from happy. Potentially could have scored but his shot was from a tight angle Salah he ain't.
Trondsen looked good at left back but was subbed off before he could make any real impact.
Meling pinged a few passes from deep and was a lively addition to a tiring defence.
Asen, Ceide and Botheim all added nothing.

      KBK Highlights:

Mbaye looked very good in goal. He did flap at a free kick which nearly led to a goal but overall was composed throughout.
Aasbak made some good forward runs and contributed to a few attacks.
Sormo also looked lively running at the defence.
Hopmark was booked for a silly foul.
Pellegrino heavily involved going forward. Took some corners and instigated some attacks. Was quick on the ball. Light-footed player with a deft touch. Ultimately didn't create much. To his credit he was happy to hold back and defend when needed. Had a decent game but for the wrong reasons.
Kalludra was boxed in a lot of the game - forced to shoot from distance and after blazing a couple of chances over seemed to get more annoyed with himself as the game went on.
Kastrati - what can I say? The guy was not with it today. He looked agitated and annoyed from the start of the match. He did manage to draw some fouls out but he was also fouling, losing the ball and acted rather petulantly.
Bye added some forward impetus following his addition to the game. He looked lively. Would the game have gone their way if he had started? Quite possibly.
Amar nearly scored after coming on, forcing a good save from Hansen.

      Best players in my opinion:

      RBK: Eggen Hedenstad, Reginiussen, Helland
      KBK: Mbaye, Pellegrino, Sormo.

Hopefully this is helpful and welcomed. Apologies about the long post. If this is something people are happy to see on game days then I'm happy to provide it. I'll be following Rosenborg this season as my team (Tromso) are no longer in the division!
But please do inform me if this kind of thing is more annoying than anything. Cheers gents.

Yeah eurosport are showing some games so aafk-mol with english commentary was a treat. Usually streams here are just stadium noise, no commentary and takes a while to familiarise oneself with players.

I was watching via Bet365 as I don't have Eurosport unfortunately.

The lack of commentary and rather tinny stadium noise does make it somewhat different to what I'm used to.

                Thankfully got 2, happy days.

I was surprised by Eikrem's "lowish" ownership. He is the best player in the league by a mile and probably the only player who is more or less guaranteed to get solid points. To a lesser extent the only other player I'd have up there in terms of consistency is Stølås. Rest of the league is hit and miss and apart from streaky patches here and there you can't really rely on any of them.

At there start of every season there's a Helland bandwagon for some odd reason and every time it's derailed by GW3-4.

Only reason I avoided Eikram was because I was telling myself "Surely not AGAIN" and wanted to go against the grain from GW1.

There's a case to be made about building a more balanced side without him, but you are right - he's integral to Molde and should be a mainstay.

One of the main points that may go in my favour is the fact that we're looking at more subs and just how much depth Molde have in midfield. They have young players too - they may be given a look in during congestion/easier fixtures.

It was a 50/50 for me between him and James and I picked the wrong one. Not sure I'll navigate my way back to him, but he is a player that rarely disappoints.

As soon as Stolas is fit he's going straight into my team. The guy is an animal.

What is normally a avg/good score for a GW - I have 47 pts so far? First time playing this and just wondered.

Also with James Red Card - what are thoughts on this? Swap him out or hang on? Probably depends on your bench I would think.

You've been a user on this site for 10 years and you're asking what a good score is? Seriously?

It's exactly the same as FPL. You can see how your score compares to the average on the points screen. It obviously varies from GW to GW.

Average seems to be 36 for this GW.

But yeah, regarding how good your GW score is, you can compare it to the average quite easily yourself.

In this case, so far, you're slightly above average so not a bad start.
We do have a couple of games tomorrow though so it might not be the case come this time tomorrow evening.

Regarding James - it depends on a) how good your bench is for the next game b) whether you think this is part of James' game and it could continue and c) if you have a surefire replacement lined up who you think can really get some points next GW.

I'd also look at - if you don't already have him - as being liberated to choose Eikrem and settle for someone else up front. As soon as Ohi comes back from injury he'll be rotating with James anyway (like last season). If anything it kind of makes owning Eikrem plus another Molde midfielder who will be playing high up the pitch a possibility for the next game.

I will say that RBK defended well against KBK today but in parts were a bit patchy. I'll definitely be expecting Molde to score against them at home. If that helps you decide who to go for then great.

Thanks for the thoughts. For the points was thinking it would be lower than FPL looking at the lower points as the players scored overall last season that's all (plus the players seem to be a lot more expensive esp in def to get decent nailed on players that score a lot of points).

I have Eikram already, so maybe a replacement for James - It does free up a lot of cash, but will need to look into who and your Molde midfielder idea to go with Eikrem.

All the articles and analysis of the posts are great so please keep it up! I hope to build up enough knowledge to be able to contribute with informed posts at some stage.

Predicting the Molde midfield is worse than predicting the City midfield. I'd be focusing on getting a Glimt mid instead. Pellegrino could run riot vs AaFK.

As Reindeer said it depends on your bench. My bench is 3 STB players that I don't think will offer much at VIF. So benching James isn't ideal.

The forward department is really poor if you take away James. I'm keeping an eye on Mawa and Salvesen tomorrow. If they look good I'll probably make the switch.

                I second this approach.
Salvesen made my shortlist before I decided on alternatives, so if he looks bright tomorrow then in he comes.
I'm bracing myself for a very frustrating second GW - I don't think GW2 is going to bring as many points as we'd hope.

I agree with comments RE predicting the Molde midfield. I'm encouraged by the fact that Brynhildsen started today combined with both the fact he was brilliant last season AND James is out. So my gut is definitely telling me to keep him for at least another week.

I do think there's a real chance James could be dropped after his suspension too. Ohi is one of the best in the league and if James needs a time-out I wouldn't put it past management to give him just that.

              Depends entirely on your team.

Do you have a good 5th midfielder/4th defender?

Do you want to keep James after Rosenborg game? Are you concerned about Ohi returning?

Do you want to maximise points from the next fixtures with a striker you think is odds on to score?

              It's a multi-faceted problem to be honest.

After putting out a call for Eliteserien writers yesterday, I think the best way for this to be managed is for us to just talk about it on site.

Generally, I'm happy for as many of us to write as many articles as we can - too much content probably won't be a problem!

However exact duplicates isn't necessary - eg. two people writing a review of the same games.

So if you are going to write an article just post on the latest Eliteserien article what you're tackling and others will know to steer clear and take a different angle.

I think that's the best way to approach it for now.
Thoughts? Questions? Concerns? Does that sound like a feasible way for us all to manage Eliteserien content?

Think this is a good idea.

It's a small community as it is - odds are we won't get lost in a swamp of comments.

As some of you may know I'll be following RBK this season so will be watching their games.

I have Eurosport now so I can actually watch their games full-screen and have a better chance of seeing their numbers/getting used to who is actually playing!

I think game reviews would be great to post as well as regular articles discussing how well lesser-known players are doing as well as the more popular names.

As the game is similar in it's approach to FPL it would be good to have similar analysis although we are given less stats so it may be a bit harder to give too much objective analysis and that's why I think some game reviews will help - the eye test is definitely more applicable here than FPL.

My initial thoughts were doing periodic round ups every few weeks and then some game reviews in between, maybe?

It depends how many articles you guys want I suppose. Like you say, the more the merrier it's just a case of not overloading everyone with too much info.

Seeing as James is suspended for the next game a lot of people are asking what to do with him.

Do we want to look at writing a mini article on certain approaches for how to handle that situation?

Yeah, definitely that kind of thing is good!

Some things can be put into Hot Topics - if you write a post that isn't quite long enough to be an article but still has good content, longer than a normal post, I can make it green and give it a title

But equally I'm happy for new articles about almost anything. We don't have to play by the same rules as FPL editorial - we can have lots of small articles about issues if people are around to write them!

Ok cool. One way we could go about that is say if I wanted to write about that, I could email it to you and then you decided whether it's a hot topic or article?

Tbh I trust you to decide! It's partly about length but if a few go into the 'wrong' spot maybe we find a better way to do things. Do what feels best 🙂

OK that's fine. I'd like to say that after tonight's games I'd be interested in coming up with some kind of article/hot-topic regarding how to replace James.

If everyone is cool with letting me have a bash at that, that would be great.

In the coming weeks I'd like to put my name in the hat to do a specific write up (will be an article) focusing specifically on Rosenborg. I think they should be a team people are interested in as they failed to have much impact in the league until late on last season and they should be going all out to win the league this season.

After a disappointed 0-0 draw at home to Kristiansund yesterday, it's not started brilliantly.

I'm interested in approaching this as a pre-Borven article and how they've done so far, and then after a month or so of having Borven, revisit them.

Aside from that I'd be happy providing hot-topics. Overall if we as a community can be providing round ups (I'm sure there's people better placed than I, for example Talles to provide us with that information) as well as additional info then that's great.

I've always felt Eliteserien has been under-represented on the site but we are comparing a game that has around 30,000 players to on with over 7 million so it's not surprising!

You'll find that. Eliteserien is a lot more unpredictable than FPL - you'll have a great team on paper and be massively outscored by others with seemingly random teams.

Also bonus points are awarded differently than in FPL. Look at Saletros for example - Sarpsborg lost at home to Valengra and he gets all the bonus.

Nice start anyway. Good luck for the rest of the season.

I'm pretty much bang on average.

But no Eikrem and James captained.

Took out Ibrahimaj for Brynhildsen right before kick off but did bring in Ostensen for Kallman (plays tonight) so was hit and miss.

Other than that I'm happy just a bit miffed about how Strand Larsen struggled to get into the game against Valengra. It was the first game of the season but Valengra looked the far better team (even though they probably are) but Sarpsborg just seemed to struggle to attack with any kind of urgency whatsoever.

I'm hoping Ohi is still injured for the RBK game - gives Brynhildsen more of a chance of starting again. But being taken off after an hour is concerning for sure.

That's a good point but at the same time Odd are clutching at straws esoecially as Rashani is out.

They'll need all the goals they can get.

He'll certainly start for Rosenborg. Islamovic failed to impress yesterday and now he'll be under the microscope. Not sure he's that kind of player to perform better under pressure.

He seemed to cut a lonely, frustrated figure up top.

More interested in how Mhyra does. He's my sub keeper and if he looks good today I might give him the nod for next GW as they have Odd at home.

With Borven potentially distracted by his move, they might struggle to have much impact on the game.

Anyone else got the Eurosport issue that I have? The commentary is about 3 seconds ahead of the action. So I know he's scored with a header while the left back is still tearing down the wing and lining up a cross!

Could be my TV/Internet, but doubt it.

Mine seems fine. Though I don't understand Norwegian so I don't have as much of a grasp as what is going on as yourself. Unless you are English and found a way to get English commentary? For me I don't seem to have that option though.

English commentary. Not sure if Eurosport is part of Sky Sports or BT Sports (or Virgin Media) but he's an English commentator.

I'm going to put up a full-time report for this game as I'm enjoying it quite a bit and there's some real standout performances.

I'd rather not clog up the article with a half-time and full-time mini analysis. Don't want you guys getting sick of me already!

This Markovic looks a real talent. And only 6m... Deserves a goal for his performance and probably should've done if it weren't for such an astute performance by Myhra thus far.

                      Goal!

                      Start 1 - 1 Stromsgodset

                      G - Bringaker (Flick)
A - Schulze (Cross from left)

Pretty sure Skalevik didn't touch it but not 100%.
