Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Gameweek 15?

Fantasy Premier League managers are faced with a traditional shoot-out between Liverpool and Manchester City for the Gameweek 15 captaincy.

With Manchester United, Spurs and Leicester all facing more evenly-matched opponents during the Boxing Day fixtures, attention is firmly on Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) and their colleagues.

They face West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United respectively, two favourable opponents – but which asset is the best for the armband?

As usual, the Captain Sensible article is here and ready to help you make the best choice.

As this uses extensive data from the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area, only those with a valid subscription can access it in full.

CAPTAIN POLL

Unsurprisingly, it is Salah who tops the captain poll for Gameweek 15. West Bromwich Albion have conceded the second-highest number of goals both in all matches this season (17), and on the road (14).

And let’s not forget how hot Salah’s form has been anyway. In just half-an-hour at Selhurst Park, he racked up 16 points, having averaged 8.8 points per game in the four outings beforehand.

As a result, a whopping 67.1% of you are going for a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach for Boxing Day.

Even though he is the second-most-backed candidate for Gameweek 15, De Bruyne trails the Egyptian by 58.2 percentage points.

The case for the Belgian is not as much of a downgrade as some might think though. He has returned points of some kind in each of his last three at the Etihad Stadium, securing two double-digit hauls and averaging 9.3 points per game.

Meanwhile, the Magpies have an unenviable record when visiting Manchester City. They have lost their last five Premier League visits to the Etihad Stadium by a combined score of 21-3. Three of those meetings saw the home side score at least five times.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.0m) has picked up 7.5% support for the armband despite scoring 17 points against Leeds and blanking in just one Premier League away match since joining Manchester United.

Leicester only have one clean sheet at home this season, so Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men will fancy their chances of scoring, as do the 1.9% of our voters who backed Anthony Martial (£8.7m) for the captaincy.

Still, the Red Devils have been somewhat porous on the road in spite of their impressive win ratio in such matches, conceding an average of 1.5 goals per game away from home.

That’s good news for the 3.8% of our readers who voted for Jamie Vardy (£10.2m) in the poll. A fifth double-figure haul of the campaign at Spurs will be of great encouragement to them, although only one of those has come at the King Power Stadium, where Vardy averages 4.7 points per game this season.

Harry Kane (£11.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.8m), Andrew Robertson (£7.3m), Sadio Mané (£11.9m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) and Olivier Giroud (£6.7m) are the only other players backed by more than 1%.

      Johnstone.

Bring him in GW16 and his LEE ARS will cover Martinez's che mun. And then he has a decent double for defense in wol whu.

He's also cheaper than the other options. Big Sam is coming in, if he works his magic, there could be surprise CSs against LEE and ARS.

Very good point, could even stretch to say it might cost minus 4 to bring him in for 2 games then a minus 4 to get him back out

I think this point is dependent on when you plan to play second wildcard and how long you’re happy to carry the 2nd playing keeper

      I'll go with one of Mr Freeman's suggested options depending on form over the next two weeks;
Alex McCarthy (£4.6m), Illan Meslier (£4.6m), Sam Johnstone (£4.5m)

WBAs fixture take a turn for the worse after GW19 though (including MCI, MUN and tot in the next five), so if there's any intent not to WC in GW20, McCarthy and Meslier look better options.

I posted about this a bit ago:

McCarthy - already in place for a lot of teams, good fixtures, lots of saves
Fabianski - arguably the best defensive fixtures in the week, but is there more value in the defenders?
Allison - expensive despite good fixtures
Pope - under the radar l considering playing Liverpool but could be good for West Ham
      Kasper - cheaper options elsewhere?
      Meslier - saves, and...what?
Mendy - good double but fixtures surrounding I’m not so sure of
      De Gea/Henderson - there’s your problem
Areola - it’s Fulham, but they have been improving
West Brom - it’s West Brom, and it’s big Sam

Currently for me I’m tickling with McCarthy and either Mendy or Flappy.

    Current team

    Mendy

    Robertson Dias Coufal

    Salah KDB Bruno Grealish Soucek

    Bamford Watkins

    Forster Dier Brewster Bernardo

Best moves for GW16 - moves for 15 have been done already

    A. Grealish and Watkins
    To Son and Barnes

    B. KDB and Watkins
    To Son and Firmino

I was on A but B looks better.
I will FH in 18 so I can have KDB for that week anyway and get him back post dgw 19. I am only aiming for a good 11 and TC in 19.
B also means enough cash for something like Grealish to Ziyech for GW19

So Reece James was pictured in training before the West Ham game.

And these are Lampard's comments -

‘They are both doubtful,’ reported Lampard.

‘I can’t give you an answer at the moment. I’m not sure if they will be fit for either game.

The problem with half-fitness is that it puts him in jeopardy of not starting both DGW fixtures too. Up until them the fixtures aren't a great in all honesty.

I -may- hold him as I have enough ITB to upgrade a non-playing defender (Ferguson) to ~5.1m... but selling is still on my mind.

I would only keep Mahrez if there were noises about other Man City players being rested. It seems to be all or nothing with him.

With the transfers you plan at least you would have the comfort of knowing they will start.

Depends on whether you can stomach more benchings from Mahrez or missed sitters from Werner. Plus Werner is likely to be benched when a few of the injured Chelsea mids are back.

      1. sunzip14
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

Mahrez looks certain for more benching with next 2 matches within 48 hours and as you said Werner is also likely due a rest. So, probably a no brainer to get rid. I am overthinking only because I am not too keen to get Neto despite him playing BGW18 and I can't find any other attractive midfield option at less than 7m.

I've had other fires to put out with Chilwell and Lamptey so probably going to hold on the basis that...

      A) if benched this week then surely he starts against Everton given short turnaround between games.

      B) if he starts this week then I can sell knowing he'll probably be benched against Everton, hopefully after a big haul vs Newcastle!

Is it so that James has had this knee problem earlier, so it’s nothing new? And it might cause problems later as well?

Tempted to do Chilwell and Wilson out for Robertson and Che Adams

    It's a 4pt hit.

    Good idea?

    my backline:

    Chiwell James Coufal Dallas Lamperty

Should I just ditch one of CHiwell/James? I want them back as soon as possible though for dgw

Lamptey out. He was ruled out for this weekend. Buy a DGW guy. I'd probably just go Balbuena. Hope that the Chelsea guys are fit. If they're not, then lose Chilwell next week.

Why not? They have the best DGW fixtures. BUR WBA. Those are amazing for defense. And they have better fixtures than Southampton before and for the DGW.

Exclusively for double i would want at least 2 west ham defenders. But since you'll be playing him in next few with chilwell james out as well I'd get a Burnley defender. So Taylor.

Southampton don't have good fixtures for their defence. It's either Taylor or Balbuena who r the best options.

I'd get Taylor. 2 amazing fixtures upcoming. Still has the 1 good fixture against westham as well in double. Overall till the end of DGW I'd say Burnley have a better schedule. No need to exclusively look at double.

    Thanks all.

GW 15 -> Lamptey Chillwell Greenwood TO Raphinha Trent Dier -4
GW16-> KDB and Targett TO T.Silva and Son -4
    GW17-> Save
GW 18 -> save and field 6-8 players
    GW 19 Mitchell -> Balbuena + Martinez -> Fabianski

I really like my team and don’t wanna wreck it to get a BB team in 19.
Is Mo(TC) with 8/9 DGW players and some big hitting SGW for 19 enough to cover it with all the great BB teams available in 19?

Have already used my FT before the Chilwell news. As it is I have a back 3 of Cancelo Dallas and Targett with Coufal as first sub (Cancelo due a rest).
Bench Chillwell? Or go mad and switch chilwell and DCL to Trent and Adams for a -8?!?

Is it pissing anyone else off that Fpl aren't putting a red flag on Chilwell? No way he plays arsenal, Telegraph reporting maybe back by new year. His price is going to plummet when he should be red flagged

Red flag doesn't stop price drops i think. Does it? I thought it was when the red changes to white it stops.

No sorry it won't stop any change happening but I'm sure it at least doubles the required transfers needed, and therefore stops a double drop or triple drop. Its crazy that he's dropped already and may drop twice before next gw. I want to wait and see, and also to gain 2ft to make a move. Bah!

As a Chilwell and James owner I am more inclined to keep Chilwell as he walked off the pitch in only mild discomfort. James has a persistent issue that will need an op at some point. To me he could be rested for the club captain Azpi at any time. I see Chilwell getting his enforced rest now then coming back and playing the double. James I simply cannot see getting the double.

...to me it seems odd that Chelsea don't just sort out James op now and target his return for Jan 15th at the earliest. That is not a massive amount of matches and he comes back fresh for their key period with CL etc,

      I think the opposite.

I think James is likely to be fit even for Arsenal. He was seen training, he failed a late fitness test for the WHU game. From the reports, it sounds like he has a build-up of fluid in his knee. It was not deemed serious enough to require an op to drain it, so with rest it will heal.

I think both will be fit for the double personally and James is like 40/60 to make it for Arsenal and if not, likely for Villa.

Does it not concern you that this is something that will be managed with rest i.e. rotation with Azpi. How can you have any confidence when he will play?

Because he's clearly better than Azpi. Azpi had a pretty poor game vs West Ham.

I personally think he skips the Arsenal game and plays the Villa one.

Agree with this, he had that fitness issue before and played Wolves - albeit it worsened afterwards but I'm still optimistic.

...and this is the issue. It is not a problem that is going away, whereas Chilwell has something more likely to completely heal.

That's not true at all... We don't know anything really about Chilwell's injury. Just that it was a knock to his ankle.

The knee issue could well just be a thing where he needs some rest for. What makes you think it's 'a problem that is not going away' for James?

            1. DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy

I saw Chilwell walk off the pitch unaided with my own eyes which maybe he would not of done with a really bad injury. You know about as much as I do re both players situation so perhaps we should agree to end the conversation. All I know is I don't want injury doubts in my team, I've been burned by Pullsic already this season.

I had to remove Chilwell because of the price point. Otherwise would have gone for James. I'll probably remove James next week as well if it's looking like he won't be back by the double.
