Possible formation change for Southampton with Ings in starting XI to face Chelsea

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has possibly changed formation going into Double Gameweek 25.

With Kyle-Walker Peters (£4.7m) sidelined for the Saints due to a hamstring injury picked up in Gameweek 24, the Austrian is without a senior right-back.

The solution appears to be a back three, which was trialled briefly in that GW24 defeat to Wolves when Mohammed Salisu (£4.3m) replaced Walker-Peters after 72 minutes.

Hasenhuttl hinted at a change of shape in the embargoed section of his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“If you have no players in one position, then it is always an option to think about a change of shape. This is not something that is too difficult to change quickly, especially when you have had a week to prepare.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

The potential change of formation would also match Southampton up with Thomas Tuchel’s wing-back system.

Over 600,000 new owners of Danny Ings (£8.5m) will be hoping for immediate returns, irrespective of how the Saints set up. Hasenhuttl’s men also face Leeds on Tuesday in the second instalment of their Double Gameweek 25.

There was also a smattering of investment in Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) – who could be at the centre of that back three – and James Ward-Prowse (£6.0m), with both players starting.

It is also possible that Hasenhuttl’s preferred 4-2-2-2 formation remains, which could see Jan Bednarek (£4.9m) operate at right-back.

Che Adams (£5.8m) is once again on bench duty, while Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) is not part of the matchday squad. Asked by BT if the Scotland midfielder is injured, Hasenhuttl replied:

Yes, a slight injury. Hopefully not too long. Again, was punished after two games in three days. A little bit [of an] issue with his muscle.

On Thursday, the Southampton manager had said of the club’s injury situation:

Kyle Walker-Peters is another who is out definitely for the game, for a few weeks maybe. Hopefully, there is nobody else [out apart from Walker-Peters, Theo Walcott and Ibrahima Diallo].

Tuchel, meanwhile, continues to keep faith with Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) at left wing-back as Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) is benched for the fourth time in five gameweeks.

Kurt Zouma (£5.4m) earns a rare start alongside Antonio Rudiger (£4.6m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.7m), while Reece James (£5.0m) returns at right wing-back after missing out on the Gameweek 24 starting XI.

N’Golo Kante (£4.9m) is preferred to first-choice penalty taker Jorginho (£4.7m) in midfield.

“Right now we have three strong midfielders with [Mateo] Kovacic, Jorginho and Kante, which I’m absolutely happy [with].

“They are, in the moment, the core of our game and the core of our team with quality, mentality, organizing and the structure. I want to have minimum two of them on the pitch.” – Thomas Tuchel

Mason Mount (£6.8m) and Timo Werner (£9.2m) will rove behind striker Tammy Abraham (£7.2m), who overcomes a knock to start.

Edouard Mendy (£5.1m) is also back between the sticks for Chelsea. Tuchel stated this week that the Senegal goalkeeper remains first choice ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.7m), who started the 2-0 win against Newcastle in GW24.

Southampton XI (3-4-1-2): McCarthy; Salisu, Vestergaard, Bednarek; Bertrand, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Djenepo; Minamino; Ings, Redmond.

Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Zouma, Rudiger, Azpilicueta; Alonso, Kante, Kovacic, Reece James; Werner, Mount; Abraham.

My worst transfer this season is Mendy over Martinez 4GWs ago. That's what i get for being a miser trying to be key

They don’t want VAR in the game to expose them every match. Has to be the only excuse for the constant misuse of it.

Best league in the world with the worst refs is taking its toll.

They have a very short timespan to see incidents in a fast moving game with any number of imponderables - for example restricted vision due to a player running between them and the ball. So yes everybody else has the freedom to decide whether its a card or not in their mind but with privileged viewing conditions. The allegation of corruption is immature stupidity.

        Bottomed

For those who want to understand liverpool's plight this season.

Two biggest factors are unprecedented injury crisis AND blatantly bad decision making from officials particularly VAR. Virgil injury ticks both boxes but the sad thing is it has been season long issues from officials and injuries. Some might call this excuses others facts. You decide.

        VAR overturns (net score)

        Chelsea +3
        Everton +3
        Brighton +2
        Burnley +2
        Leeds +2
        Sheffield United +2
        Man City +1
        Newcastle +1
        Southampton +1
        Aston Villa 0
        Crystal Palace 0
        Fulham 0
        Leicester 0
        Man United 0
        West Ham -1
        Wolves -1

Okay. I agree with most of this surprisingly.

Does it not at least point to the possibility of bias towards those at the top end and against those at the bottom?

Not definitive if course but not insignificant either

Even if VAR overturns correlated with bias, which it doesn't, there are top teams at the top and bottom and in the middle. Then there the fact that the effect and sample size are absolutely tiny.

Either this is evidence of ref bias or it isnt.

If you have to add the evidence of game footage then its clearly not evidence in its own right.

                              Correlation doesnt equal causation.

You said it could be that liverpool benefit from onfield calls and VAR correct those decisions. That is one way of "interpreting" thesexstats is it not?

I was watching this Chelsea game and responding to a Southampton fan venting at refereeing favouring Chelsea in this game. These stats were given to show that Chelsea are at the top of the VAR overturns table. Southhampton fans shouldn't take these perceived injustices personally. Chelsea have benefitted all season. As a fan of a team at the bottom of this table, I would love to trade places with Chelsea. I am not surprised Chelsea fans are unimpressed to see they lead this table.

I'm not taking a side here, but your evidence could be evidence that Liverpool is normally favoured by the onfield referreeing decisions.

Your observation of the stats is valid.

So if you want to check your hypothesis. Watch the freaking games. It won't take you long to see we are not benefitting from refereeing decisions on the field. I could give you 16 examples from numerous games if you like?

It's your hypothesis that there is a bias, and you provided evidence of that. But the evidence is not evidence of your hypothesis. So I'm on my way to a more valuable thread.

To be honest fantasy football is waste of time but its fun. I love this bias by fans for their clubs as they somehoe see the club as extension of their own being lol. Almost all clubs especially business oriented ones like Chelsea and Mcity really dont care if you fan or not, legend or not. That Lampard sacking was a disgrace irrespective of how well Tuchel is doin as Lampard was doing bad either

                                Oh right. Here we go

                                Example 1:

Mohamed Salah non-penalty (vs Aston Villa)
Okay, Liverpool lost the match 7-2 but, when they were just 1-0 down they were denied a stonewall penalty on Mohamed Salah.

                                2. Jordan Pickford's lunge on Virgil van Dijk (vs Everton)

                                3. Jordan Henderson’s offside winner (vs Everton)

                                4. Sheffield United’s penalty award (vs Sheffield United)
Imagine conceding a penalty for a good tackle OUTSIDE the box. That’s what happened against Sheffield United as Fabinho was adjudged to have fouled Oliver McBurnie.

                                5. Penalty award for handball on Joe Gomez (vs Man City)

6.Mohamed Salah’s offside goal (vs Brighton)

                                7.Brighton’s penalty award (vs Brighton)
Was it a penalty? Wasn’t it a penalty? After slowing it down and watching it 10 times, it could well have been. But was it a clear and obvious error by referee Stuart Attwell for it to be overturned? No chance.

                                8. Foul in the build-up to Fulham’s goal (vs Fulham)
Liverpool could only draw 1-1 to Fulham but Jurgen Klopp felt there was a foul in the build-up to Bobby Decordova-Reid’s goal. Antonee Robinson pushed Mohamed Salah in the back but VAR adjudged there wasn’t a foul.

9.Son Heung-min’s ‘offside’ goal (vs Spurs)
Was Son Heung-min’s goal offside? From the replays, it looked incredibly close and it seemed as though there would be a lengthy check to determine whether the South Korean’s armpit had strayed. But within seconds, the officials allowed the goal.

                                10. Karl Darlow’s grab on Sadio Mane (vs Newcastle)
Liverpool drew 0-0 with Newcastle and not much was made of Darlow’s grab on Mane as the winger looked set to tap the ball home.

                                11.Jack Stephens’ handball (vs Southampton)
Liverpool felt they should have had a penalty when Georginio Wijnaldum’s shot was blocked by the hand of Stephens. A quick VAR check later and the appeals were waved away.

12.Kyle Walker-Peters’ foul on Sadio Mane (vs Southampton)
Mane went down in the box under Walker-Peters’ challenge but Andre Marriner didn’t give it.

                                13. Leicster score equaliser with a dubious VAR overturn when a player looks offside and influences the play.

                                14. Referee gives pen in previous sequence when foul is clearly outside of the box.

                                15. Mane gives away pen for not touching the player at all against wolves

                                16. Van dijk not even offside against Everton when shamelessly cut down by pickford

Yer I was going to bring in vestergaard but was talked out of it. The problem with taking the general consensus opinion on here is that will result in an average score, as it's what the masses are doing. I used to finish in top 5k season after season until I started reading this forum, that slipped to top 100k or so.

              Possible WC draft:

              Martinez 4m
              Dias Cancelo Shaw White Struijk
              Bruno Salah Son Gundo 4.5
              Kane DCL Bam

              Seem OK?

I’ll have Watkins instead of bam but looks like a fairly typical line up for us wc’ers

Yep, Watkins possibly. No Grealish could have an impact on him.

Currently on a -4pts for next week. Is it worth doing Bamford + Soucek to DCL + ESR for everton cover for -12pts? Team would look like-

              Pope
              Cancelo Stones Konsa
              Salah Son Gundo Son
              DCL Kane Watkins

              McCarthy ESR Alioski Coufal

Werner tackle nailed on red card. Some of Chelsea's tackles are borderline at best

                Chilwell Pope Ings
                To
TAA Areola Vardy for a hit

                Martinez 1st keeper

Very true! Such is the game. But I dont need or want Pope now
                      Chilwell obvious
                      And need Vardy or Kane

Might not bother TAA if I can get Kane in then actually

                My team:

                Areola
                Stones-Mee-Cresswell-Dallas
                Fernandes-Salah-Son
                Barnes-Bamford-Ings

                Johnstone-Soucek-Cancelo-Gundogan

Only 10 (9) players who are potentially (hopefully) involved in DGW26 teams. 4 for DGW27.

Any suggestions/thoughts on how to proceed?

I was thinking Watkins, Kane and Man Utd defensive options as potential transfers to make it 11-12 DGW's. Maybe DCL as an option too.

                Martinez Pope*
                Dias Cancelo Dallas Mee* Lowton*
                Salah Bruno Son Gundogan Raphinha
                Ings Bamford Antonio*

With 1FT, no FH, best strategy is:
                A. WC26 and BB later
                B. BB26 and WC27
                C. BB26, and WC later (29+)

Really want to BB26. My bench would be Pope, and 3 of Dallas / Raphinha / Bamford / Ings. I will never have a stronger bench than that

He’s very tempting but if he’s TT’s 1st choice for CL, he won’t start 4 in a row.

I started Alonso over Cancelo. First time I’ve owned him in ages.

He might not be the best transfer I’ve made, but he is exciting to watch as an fpl-owner.
