FPL Gameweek 17 round-up: Tuesday review, injury news and the things we learned

Our Scoreboard series rounds up the key goings-on from Tuesday’s Gameweek 17 fixtures, from injury news to stats analysis.

With the swift turnaround between Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadlines, the Scoreboard articles will take the place of the usual Scout Notes throughout December.

The graphics below are taken from LiveFPL, Ragabolly’s excellent and ever-expanding website, and our own Premium Members Area.

GOALS, ASSISTS, BONUS

INJURIES AND BANS

Bernardo Silva (£7.7m) was withdrawn at half-time tonight, with his team already 3-0 up, which Pep Guardiola touched on in his post-match interview:

“He had muscular niggles. Nothing was injured but he was a little bit uncomfortable. But at 3-0 we didn’t want to take the risk.”

Kyle Walker (£5.5m) was a surprise absentee on the night, as he wasn’t deemed fit enough to make the matchday squad.

Elsewhere, Ozan Kabak (£4.4m) went down holding his left ankle for Norwich City, and was promptly replaced, adding to the Canaries mounting injury list, while Jamie Shackleton (£4.4m) also hobbled off for Leeds United.

At Aston Villa, Jed Steer (£4.0m), Morgan Sanson (£5.0m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.6m) and Keinan Davis (£4.5m) were all absent from the matchday squad, with Steven Gerrard saying yesterday that two members of his first-team had tested positive for Covid-19.

It was also revealed prior to kick-off that Marvelous Nakamba (£4.5m) could be ruled out for the rest of the Premier League campaign, after sustaining a knee injury against Liverpool at the weekend.

“We’ve got a rough idea (on the timeframe) but I don’t want to get it wrong and I don’t want to put unnecessary pressure on the medical staff but he’ll certainly be missing for a number of months.” – Steven Gerrard on Marvelous Nakamba

On the suspension front, Junior Firpo (£4.7m) will miss Gameweek 18, having picked up his fifth yellow card of the season tonight.

Ruben Dias (£6.1m), plus Norwich duo Max Aarons (£4.3m) and Brandon Williams (£3.9m), are also just one caution away from a ban, after picking up bookings.

However, City can at least welcome Joao Cancelo (£6.8m) back, having served his one-match suspension against Leeds.

GAMEWEEK 17 TAKEAWAYS

FOUR WINS IN SIX FOR GERRARD

Six games in for Steven Gerrard as Aston Villa manager, and he’s picked up 12 points with wins against Brighton and Hove Albion, Crystal Palace, Leicester City and Norwich City, with their only losses arriving against the current top two – Manchester City and Liverpool. It’s been a hugely encouraging start for the former Liverpool man, with appealing fixtures against Burnley and Leeds United still to come before the end of the year.

At Carrow Road, Ollie Watkins (£7.6m) produced his first double-figure haul of the season, courtesy of a goal, assist and maximum bonus, while budget midfielder Jacob Ramsey (£4.5m) – who has now started five of Gerrard’s first six matches in charge – also found the back of the net in an excellent all-round display.

It was also notable just how advanced Villa’s full-backs were on the night, especially Matty Cash (£5.0m), who touched the ball six times inside Norwich’s penalty area, more than any other player bar Watkins.

Aston Villa’s average position map v Norwich City in Gameweek 17

CITY HIT SEVEN AS DE BRUYNE AND FODEN SHINE

In a stunning performance, Man City completely outclassed Leeds in Gameweek 17, with midfielders Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.6m), Phil Foden (£8.0m), Jack Grealish (£7.6m), Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m) and Rodri (£5.5m) all amongst the points.

For Foden, his 12-point haul is his best since Brighton away in Gameweek 9, while tonight’s win also signalled the return of De Bruyne, who was simply irresistible from his no. 8 role, scoring twice from a match-high nine shots. His performance could have implications for Bernardo Silva and Gundogan, too, with the three players essentially competing for the two central attacking midfield slots in Pep Guardiola’s 4-3-3 formation.

“A lot has happened this year, a little bit out of out of my control. The only thing I could do is work hard and come back as quick as possible. It’s unfortunate with everything that has happened and at the time I was coming back I got Covid. It happened and now we are working hard to come back to a good level.” – Kevin De Bruyne

ATTACKING STRUGGLES CONTINUE AT NORWICH

Norwich City’s struggles in the final-third continued on Tuesday, as they lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at Carrow Road. As a result, they have now failed to find the back of the net in 11 of their 17 league fixtures this season, scoring just eight goals overall, while their 14.02 non-penalty expected goals (xG) total is worse than any other top-flight side.

The absentees are stacking up, too, with eight players missing against Villa due to various injuries and Covid, something Dean Smith touched on after the match:

“It looked like we were playing low-risk football, which is not what we asked. We’re missing around eight players that could play in the first team at the moment. The last few games have been frustrating because of our finishing. Tonight, it was frustrating because of our first-half performance. You’re not going to win anything playing like that.”

Very frustratingly 0.1 off Semedo to Cancelo. Do I go
Raphina to foden or upgrade Guaita who promises a lot but has been devastating to own really:

    Guaita - Steele
Dias - James - TAA- Semedo - Tino
    Bernardo - Salah - Jota - Raph - Bowen
    Antonio - Watkins - King

1 FT 1.9 in the bank

If you can afford Raph to Foden for -4 after that, you'd have one of the best possible non-Man U teams in the game atm

I like Raph to Foden and Dias to Cancelo.

You could probably bank the transfer. 2FT in 10 days time could be really valuable in a covid world

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Alonso Rudiger
    Salah Foden Bernardo Bowen
    Ronaldo King
    (Steele Livramento ASM Allan)

    2ft, 0.2itb

At a bit of an impasse (which is weirdly what happened the last time I rolled a transfer). Have a few ideas but I guess the biggest problem is Ronaldo and what to do with him. I would be happy to keep him for another couple of games if the Brighton game is going ahead (especially with Newcastle afterwards) but he's pretty much the reason why I can't manoeuvre much. I have a few ideas but I'm a little unsure at which looks best.

Looking to move a Chelsea def on soon, could do it this week but it does feel silly with Wolves coming up at the weekend. Need to upgrade ASM, need to get rid of Allan too (whether to another player around 4.5 or someone nearer 6), and want to upgrade Sanchez as well. Probably could do with moving Livramento on too. Thinking about Ronaldo to Firmino soon, Liverpool have Leeds in GW19 followed by Leicester, and then face a good bit of January without Salah and Mane in which they have a few decent fixtures too and he'll likely be needed to pitch in with goals more than usual. Obviously depends on fitness but this would be going on the basis that he was back training last week and hopefully will feature tomorrow to gain a bit of match fitness and then has Spurs at the weekend to continue that (I could just bench him if I did this this GW).

    A) Alonso + Allan to Coufal and Odegaard
    B) Ronaldo + Sanchez to Firmino + DDG/Ramsdale
    C) Ronaldo + Allan to Firmino + Odegaard
    D) Livramento to Ait-Nouri and roll the other FT

Are you confident AWB won't be a problem? I know Dalot seems to fit Rangnick's attacking desires more but I thought AWB wasn't fit for the games that Dalot played in

How about ASM + Allan > Gallagher + Gelhardt?

Roll GW19 FT, then Alonso +/- Rudiger should fund King to Watkins for GW20

I'm quite happy to keep King to be honest, only brought him in last week and think he'll cover the next month or so pretty well when needed. Gallagher I'm torn on, I ended up watching a lot of Palace early this season and thought he was playing great but never moved, then felt when he began to play deeper it might have been right and now with McArthur not far away and Hughes looking like he's settling into his role maybe I should have done it but I do feel it's a bit late. Not too keen on bringing in another player that's likely to only get a few mins off the bench either (Gelhardt)

I understand your reservations, but here's my reasoning:

Not the time to lose Ronaldo or Chelsea defenders (Kanté is back) or get Ait-Nouri, all due to fixtures

There's no guarantee of playing time with Firmino and Odegaard

Gallagher has his enablers again, so he's back. The fixture run continues until your 2nd WC, just bench vs top 3

I think Gelhardt is breaking into the team, especially with Bamford out again and no makeshift striker impressing Bielsa. Heck, he was subbed on at half time vs City because of this, and provided the spark Leeds needed. I don't expect constant starts, but he's a good third sub with 1 or 2 points, or a lucky goal. Also, 5 mids are currently better than 3 strikers. Far more options, especially with Ronaldo

King is an underwhelming asset. Beyond just luck, he seems... Simply not good enough at shot conversion, like Maupay. Watkins fixtures from GW20 to your 2nd WC are considerably better than King's, and GW20+ would be the right time to lose Chelsea defenders, with a tough run + 2 BGWs incoming

          1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
            • 3 Years
            2 years, 4 months ago

Hmm good points on the first few, although Ait-Nouri would be a bench option primarily, there are a few weeks he'd slot in nicely. Gallagher is hard to ignore but realistically needing to use 3 transfers to get him feels a bit much, Gelhardt is doing well but I can't see Bamford being out for too long and Rodrigo is to return too, Bielsa a number of times has had players that are filling in do really well but once his main XI is fit they're straight out and I really want to have a full playing squad. I'm still happy to stick with King, he is wasteful I can't argue with that but 5 in the last 8 isn't bad, once I'm not relying on him every week I'm happy enough and he should be the main focus for a while if Dennis goes to AFCON

Cheers, certainly thinking that now. I'd like Odegaard looking at the next two but when I look at the moves it doesn't feel like the right use of two FTs. Also could just do Allan to Ramsey which is appealing too given his minutes under Gerrard

"It was claimed by RMC Sport in France that the Central African Federation (CAF) may have been forced to can the showpiece, which will be held in Cameroon and is due to start on January 9 and run until February 6.

But the organisers are adamant that the AFCON will take place, with just weeks left until the first game - meaning that a host of Premier League players, including Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, are set to leave their clubs mid-season."

Lads, early thoughts for my 2 free transfers?

    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, Dias, James, Livra
    Salah, Foden, Jota, Bowen, Luiz
    Antonio, Watkins, King

Downgrading Dias is an option, as he is most likely first sub, but then again, don't know what else to do. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I have a similar team just Rudiger over James, Bilva over Foden, Saka over Luiz and Wilson over King

Im considering moving Dias and Saka out for Coufal and Foden. Think Dias is potentially a waste of a space

Not sure how to feel about AFCON being postponed, was kinda looking forward to everyone selling Salah and differentiating things up a bit

If AFCON is cancelled is it time to sell Jota? Not nailed now with Firmino back

Yeah but he wasn't even on the bench. Probably not fully ready yet

I’m sure you can answer that yourself. You gonna sell Jota with TOT, LEE & LEI next when he gets time regardless of whether Firmino is fit or not and especially now when Firmino isn’t even ready to start matches?

He rarely gets 90 minutes at the best of times. I also don’t think Liverpool’s fixtures are that good after Leeds so I’m not against selling. I’ll keep for the next two and assess

Jacob Ramsey looks a great 4.5 option. Was getting opinions few weeks ago on him kept getting told no

it's easy to say that after his first goal (or return) in 8 games.

It’s not about returns lol. It’s about eye test and he has looked good for several games now. What do you expect at 4.5 lol

nothing, which is what Ramsey probably gets you (unless you predict his one in every 8 games return and start him).

Sundays game against Brighton ain’t gonna be easy so I’m not in a rush to get Ronaldo back. I’ll keep Watkins for BUR and see how Ronaldo looks but most likely will get Ronaldo in for that NEW fixture GW 19. We all know what that fixture means, it even made Kane look good lol

It’s not just United who have covid though. If Brighton’s situation gets worse it can still get called off

    GTG?

    Ramsdale
    TAA - Cancelo - James
    Salah - Foden - Jota - Bernardo - Gallagher
    Antonio - Watkins

    Foster - King - Livramento - Manquillo

2.6m in the bank. Anything worth a hit? 🙂

for me a City double up in midfield is far too risky but this is just a personal taste. Nice team!

I would argue that the single city mid option is risky.

2.6m itb, plus money on the bench... typical for a no-CR7 team 😉

Just no where good to spend the money atm. But the worst place is not spending it imo.

Good team though, can't see anything for a hit... yet.

I presume Bernardo was subbed at HT to give him a rest right? Bernardo looked a little tired and They had the game won at HT and looking at the subs Pep made yesterday you can see he gave the core players a rest (Bernardo/Rodri/Dias) so can we say he is safe to start this weekend?

Niggles. Probably starts for the weekend, but it could be another 45 mins and with Pep I am not certain, since KdB looked good and Jesus may get a atart, not forgetting Sterling either.

if he has a niggle, I see zero reason why he would be started versus newcastle.
