Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead returns for the 2022/23 season with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this season are the BlackBox pair of Mark Sutherns and Az, Scouts Joe LepperTom FreemanNeale Rigg, Geoff Dance, Pro Pundts PrasZophar and FPL Harry,  FPL “celebrities” Magnus CarlsenFPL GeneralLTFPL AndyBen Crellin, from the Hall of Fame, Fabio BorgesFPL MatthewFinn Sollie and Tom Stephenson and of course last year’s mini-league winner and overall no.2 Suvansh.

“Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

Let’s all just pretend that Gameweek didn’t happen.

A sea of red arrows, tales of woe and shaking fists as the weekend provided little joy for many of the FPL world with the lowest average Gameweek score of the season (45).

It’s led many to question the unquestionable, such as whether Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is now surplus to requirements? Even though he has 38 points already to his name – odd times.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Green arrows at the top and the bottom of magical mini-league with FPL Harry, Mark Sutherns, Finn Sollie and Geoff Dance all hitting the high score of the week on 55 points.

In his debut season amongst The Great and The Good, this is the first time Harry has reached the summit, as Fabio fell down the mountain due to a little too much faith in the Egyptian King.

Harry’s transfer in of Ivan Toney (£7.2m), for a hit, proved a move of genius as the Brentford Bee stung the Leeds defence with a hat-trick, before taking to Twitter to goad those managers who sold him.

Mr Sutherns, another to benefit from Toney, was awarded a green arrow of 680,000 places and Finn Sollie was the remaining owner of Ivan, he is now the only one of the group yet to suffer a red arrow this season.

Meanwhile, Geoff had a slightly more up and down weekend as he had sold the Brentford striker, so must have looked on in horror during Saturday’s action, but he was soon in a better mood as his Marcus Rashford (£6.5m) Wildcard pick saw him bounce back on Sunday.

TRANSFERS

The full in’s and outs of the week are listed below:-

  • Az – None
  • LTFPL Andy – None
  • Ben Crellin – Reed (Groß)
  • Fabio Borges – James (Gabriel)
  • Finn Sollie – None
  • FPL Harry – Harrison, Toney (Rodrigo, Archer)
  • Joe Lepper – Zaha (Rodrigo)
  • Geoff Dance – Darwin, Longstaff (Toney, Rodrigo)
  • FPL General – Groß (Rodrigo)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Henderson (Ramsdale)
  • Mark Sutherns – Gibbs-White (Rodrigo)
  • FPL Matthew – Williams (Perisic)
  • Neale Rigg – None
  • Pras – None
  • Suvansh – Darwin (Archer)
  • Tom Freeman – James (Perisic)
  • Tom Stephenson – Sanchez (Ramsdale)
  • Zophar – Dunk (Perisic)

Harry’s hit was the pick of the transfers this week, Geoff and Suvansh’s early move for Darwin Nunez (£8.9m) perhaps shows an eagerness to shake things up a bit and many appear to have lost faith in Ivan Perisic (£5.6m) with three of them moving him on ahead of the European schedule.

There was a bit of Nottingham Forest love as a trio of tricky trees were traded in, obviously, Mark led the way with Morgan Gibbs-White (£5.5m), FPL Matthew gave himself money to spend by dropping Perisic for Neco “haul incoming” Williams (£4.1m) and Magnus went with Dean Henderson (£4.7m) between the sticks.

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • Ward (14), Sanchez (9)
  • Alexander-Arnold (18), Cancelo (15), James (10), Cucurella (9), Dunk (6)
  • Martinelli (18), Andreas (18), Salah (17), Luis Diaz (9), Gross (8)
  • Jesus (18), Haaland (17), Archer (7)

The template looks rock solid although I suspect to see some movement in the next few weeks as Gameweek 9 Wildcards are prepared and we see some short-term punts beforehand, hello Kieran Trippier (£5.2m).

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) will be warming up on the sidelines ready to join the squad as his fixtures turn a lovely colour in a couple of weeks and he seems to score regardless of the opposition.

As for this week, the only change was Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) coming in for Perisic despite his previous misdemeanors, The Great and The Good are nothing but a forgiving bunch.

WHAT IF?

This weekend was cruel, but just to pile on the agony I thought it a good time to bring out the What If Machine which effectively calculates what would’ve happened if you had left it well alone, so no transfers or changes to your captain. The results are below, and you can check out your own score here.

Some good news for Az whose tinkering has paid off, gaining him an extra 45 points, based on an effective Wildcard, it’s just a shame his starting 15 was so bad.

Finn Sollie is not far behind having made up 36 points, and he has yet to play his overhaul chip. His astute moves for the likes of William Saliba (£4.8m), Robert Sanchez (£4.7m) and of course Toney have all paid dividends.

Elsewhere, Magnus should have just left well alone, although much of that is his lack of patience with Rashford who he started with but then jettisoned before United became good again.

CONCLUSION

Do you hear that rumble? That’s the sound of Wildcards being prepared, with FPL General the next to break from the herd, as it a week to forget.

Rank is, of course, irrelevant right now, unless you have a good one, so stick to your plan, as another week is another week of information and there are another bunch of mistakes yet to be learnt from.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember don’t have nightmares.

Play one out of Saliba or Neco. Think Everton will score which means 2pts max for Saliba whilst Neco can grab a goal or assist.

Watching Chelsea vs Zagreb last night combined with their PL form, I just do not know if any of their assets are worth owning, even for the great fixtures.

Tuchel seems to have absolutely no clue and his players are bereft of ideas. People can put it down to new players needing time to bed in but with a defence which is leaking goals and an attack which is a like a box of froot loops, there seem to better options available.

I am sticking with James and Sterling for at least 3 GW's. If there is no sign of improvement irrespective of fixtures, I am moving them on.

Same. James stays for me through thick and thin however. If he was priced at 7 million I'd be worried. At 6 million I'd gladly take their main attacker (i am convinced he ll spend more time at RWB and will rarely see RCB with Fofana, Kouli, Cucu, Silva, Azpi in the team).
I am having doubts about sterling though . Especially when son is just 1.6 million away

141 points in 1800 minutes is insane. If injury free he can easily get 15+ goal contributions ie goals and assists combined. Let's say they just hit 10 clean sheets this season.. that's still amazing value.

That's why I decided to delay my wildcard to GW9 last night. I was ready to pull the trigger, but I need more time to assess my Chelsea defensive assets. They've got a terrific run of fixtures coming up, but right now I can't say the likes of James, Chilwell, Cucu or Fofana will be value for money.

I think Auba is going to make Sterling a terrible asset to own.

What Tuchel was thinking singning Auba, one will not be able to figure out. That is why I am going to give it up to 3 GW's to asses their FPL situation.

I was sure auba wouldnt affect sterling.. but i stand corrected. Small sample size but sterling was forced so deep yesterday. Even when broja came on he continued playing in from deep. Think tuchel is making a small tweaks to formation (mount started in double pivot too) and sterling may struggle a bit. Will give him Fulham though

As a Sterling owner, that’s very disappointing to hear. I got Salah out slightly early, switching Salah/Toney to Sterling/Kane. With Tibet’s hattrick and then the Auba signing stifling Sterling, my timing couldn’t have been any worse.

Will give Sterling Fulham at least, but it’s already looking like a bad move and a wasted transfer,

Everybody is off it but K2 in particular looks like a horrendous signing who wanted a big final payday and Todd was only happy to oblige. The problems stem from Koulibaly both in terms of attacking buildup and defensive positioning, there are no cs on the horizon until TT fixes it.

I’m not sure he would - he seems like a systems guy and he loves 3 atb. The issue is that a 38 year old has to babysit Fofana and K2 as they are positionally suspect. Throw in no Kante and wing backs pushed right up it is a recipe for disaster. They have enough cbs to find the formula - maybe something like Azpi/Silva/K2 or the Todd pleasing Fofana/K2/Cucurella with Silva saved for UCL?

A Back 4 with Kante screening might be an improvement, but he bought Kouli and Fof to play in a Back 3 and it's too late to change now.

5 at the back is not the problem. Chelsea are pants when Kante is unavailable. Also Tuchel is pretty dumb, he tinkers a lot unnecessarily at times. Even some signings weren’t needed especially Koulibaly.

They could have used the Fofana money to buy a proper cdm since Kanté is an injury prone player.

James is fine because of his attacking potential. Other than that i wouldn't touch them. Their defense will get fixed when they get comfortable but their attack is just toothless and lacks effort and ideas. I wouldn't take anyone there right now.

It's Tuchel that appears to have no clue. I have watched every minute of every Chelsea game this season and he still doesn't know whether to play a back 5 or 4 , often chopping and changing during games. The build up play is horribly slow , the ball retention terrible and there seems to be no leadership. The players are plenty talented enough but whatever he is doing in training is not fit for purpose. Mount is playing terribly but is shunted round the pitch in different positions , Fofana was abysmal last night and Chilwell looks like someone who has played very little football Players need defined roles and currently Tuchel is ignoring this. The attack I think will improve significantly once Auba is up to speed. Chelsea need a fit Kante .

Agree with your assessment. One thing I noted last night - Azpi's legs have gone. He needs to be pensioned off. Maybe Chalobah should come in, as they're a bit left-leaning in the defender department!

        1. George Sillett
          • 8 Years

Chalobah really isn't very good and Tuchel knows this. The real issue was not being more proactive with the Rudiger situation and losing Christensen too was rank bad player management. Their replacements look what they are - panic buys. I agree Azpi just isn't quick enough anymore .

He can't. Boely sacked the entire upstairs team and relied far too much on Tuchel for recruitment. In this transition period, Chelsea are wholly dependent on their manager, for better or for worse.

I don't like Tuchel's system. It's how small teams play it shouldn't be the Chelsea way. Look at Liverpool, Madrid & City, that's how big teams play. He's not changing it either bc he's stubborn af and they just spent a fortune on average CB.

Also the new club ownership is way off the expertise and leadership of Roman. Way way off. Rich Yankees playing FM. Its atrocious.

I've mentally shifted James in my mindset to a midfielder who gets 6 points for a goal. A clean sheet is just a bonus (if fit he should get 5 to 10 goals and
to 10 assists playing rwb). So just be happy when they get a cs but play him for attacking returns. CS's don't look great for anyone anymore

Was going to do Trent & Plange to Trippier & Mitro but would leave me with a benching headache and perhaps not the week to jump off Trent.

Kinda fancy Mitro to score Vs Chelsea (which means I could just bench James) but only alternative downgrade to afford it would be Diaz to fodder or a Leeds/2nd Brighton mid (priced out of Rashford).

Same boat here. Looking to take my first hit to get Mitro and Trippier for Trent and Archer. Not a good time to lose Trent with a likely CS. The alternative is to sell James for a 3.9. No headache and WC in 2 GW anyway. I'll decide after Liverpool tonight. But Mitro v Chelsea can't be ignored.

Yeah, for sure, I want Mitro as a front 3 but basically it's Trent, Diaz or Salah as options for a downgrade to afford it. Happy keeping Salah with no clear premium alternative

Been looking at it. Strongly leaning towards James out for Vestergaard (bench) to get Mitro. Gives me an easy Cucu bench v Liverpool GW8.
That would give me a GW8 headache - Trent v Che, Cucu v Liv, Perisic (does he start?). One of those 2 would go for a safe Trippier v Bou for one week before WC.

Playing around with a budget defence WC. I like the Newcastle / Brighton defences, especially for upcoming fixtures. What do you think?

    Sanchez (Iverson)
    Trippier Fofana Dalot (Emerson)(Patterson)
    KDB Diaz Sterling Martinelli (Rashford)
    Jesus Mitrovic Haaland

The thinking is that Rashford is apparently carrying a hamstring issue (not confirmed) and so might miss a GW or two. I’m planning on downgrading either Martinelli or Jesus after GW8 when Arsenals fixtures turn which will let me put money back into defence (Walker or Cancelo likely back in for one of the 4m defs).

Swap Diaz for Andreas/Bailey.. then upgrade Sterling and Fofana to James and Son.
Then swap Emerson to neco(Emerson won't play in a 4-4-2 ahead of creswelll.. and Moyes seems to prefer a 4-4-2)

      And you are all set.

Nice suggestions. Son hasn’t hit form yet but there were signs he’s about to explode in the last game…so I like that suggestion. I’m trying to use my WC to pick players who haven’t yet become template but will probably do so over the next few weeks as the hot form and score points. Sterling is in the category too. I think the KDB and Haaland combo is lucrative too.

70 mins - not that early. And yet, I've never seen an outfield player conserve his energy like Haaland does. He can't possibly get tired casually strolling around and popping up in the 6 yard box three times a game.

Exactly, he is explosive when he needs to be and he operates narrowly. I don’t see fatigue being any issue for him.

Plus he's 22, not 92. He's had a few injury problems but you'd think he's an invalid when some talk about Pep resting him around and including CL games. City S&C and physios will have him tickittyboo and he can put his feet up for the World Cup break.

The only decent defender Chelsea signed is Cucurella. Fofana too expensive & Koulibaly a waste of space. They have only kept 1 clean sheet this season.
