The Sun Dream Team Returns To The Scout

The Sun Dream Team became the latest Fantasy game to stretch its legs at the tail-end of last week, allowing managers to dabble in team selection ahead of an August 1 registration date.

Dream Team is long established as one of the biggest players in the market, attracting a huge audience wowed by the most substantial prizes on offer in UK Fantasy Football. That’s very much the case again this season, with a huge £500,000 prize pool to be divided up.

Aside from the lure of the prize pot, Dream Team is also a very different Fantasy experience. A more casual, “hands off” game, firm emphasis is placed on your initial starting XI – after this, Fantasy managers are pressed into action during four transfer windows, placed at key points throughout the season. With the domestic cups and European competitions included in the scoring system, however, your team will be serving up points at a higher frequency, holding your interest when games like the Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports take a break.

We first supported the game back in the 2011/12 season when The Sun rolled out a free version and we’re pleased to see that this is still an option.

You can pick a team for free and compete for reduced prize money, but if you back your knowledge/luck by opting for a Premium Package (two teams for £10 or six teams for £25), you’ll be able to enter more teams and be in the mix to win the full £500,000, whilst also earning the right to compete for the monthly game prizes, which make up £80,000 of the overall prize pot.

You can also register teams once the season gets underway – allowing you to compete for the monthly prizes – a good option if your other Fantasy game lineups have long fallen by the wayside.

The Ruleset

While there are various entry options and more competitions to consider when playing, the basic ruleset remains straightforward.

Each team must include 11 players with a budget of £50 million to spend. The teams can be laid out in one of three formations – a 4-4-2, 4-3-3 or 4-5-1.

Players accumulate points from matches in the Carling and FA Cups and also in Europe, with Champions League and Europa League matches contributing. Straight away, then, it’s clear that avoiding rotation and finding regular starters is a major consideration when it comes to selection.

With Europe and cup progress included as factors, the points scoring can be heavily skewed towards the top clubs. This is compounded by the fact that goals and clean sheets are the major point contributors – notably, players earn nothing for assists.

To balance the lack of assists in the game and to reward performances that don’t qualify for points, Dream Team has its own arbitrary “Bonus Point” scoring system in the shape of the “Star Man” award, which is basically man of the match and earns 5 extra points, while all players who earn 7 or more in The Sun player ratings in a match fetch another 3 points.

We’ll be offering guidance on how this can pan out and we have access to exclusive stats on offer to help underline how much of a factor these scoring methods can be.

The Transfer Windows

Managing your team around the four transfer windows is going to be crucial to your success. You can make up to three transfers per window and it’s a “use them or lose them” policy.

Significantly, the first window arrives on September 4, so with only three league matches down, you can make three changes to your squad. Subsequently, you may look to allow for this in your early strategy, selecting players with a strong opening three fixtures, knowing that you can apply three changes prior to Gameweek 4.

The following window arrives on November 12 – that’s prior to Gameweek 12. The third arrives on January 21, ahead of Gameweek 23, with the final opportunity to make transfers landing on our laps on March 18, just before Gameweek 31.

Planning your team changes, putting our season ticker to use and considering the dates of cup rounds, is therefore an important factor.

Joining Leagues

You can join up to ten leagues with any of your teams and set up your own leagues as you wish. For those thinking of starting up their own league, the Dream Team game offers real incentive to do so – there’s a new Chairman’s prize pool of £10,000 available for those who establish a league with ten or more players. Leagues can be set up from August 1 onwards.

The Scout League

We ran a Dream Team league back in the 2011/12 season and we’ll be doing so again this term. We will bring you details of our league code once its set up.

We’ll also be running some pre-season articles, focusing on the player list and selection strategies and, during the season, we’ll bring you articles to guide selection in the monthly game and the transfer windows. Look out for our first Dream Team article later this week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I probably confused the issue by misleadingly saying "Mirallas Osman Naismith were the attacking three" , which by convention means the first of the names is playing on the right.

Mirallas is LW today. (Though he usually plays on the right.)

  12. Wild Card Strategies
    Gamoriola of the Galaxy (Eu…

So what do we think about the idea of a planned early wildcard?

You might think it’s a bit early to start talking about wildcards, but the Planned Early Wildcard (PEW) is relevant now, as it affects the kind of GW1 team you can select. So my question is, does it make sense to build your squad with a PEW in mind? To get at the answer it’s worth recapping the three main WC strategies (excluding the obvious use-it-when-your-team-is-utter-crap-no-matter-what-you-originally-planned strategy, which you can resort to any time):

    1. The late-season sprint WC

This is where you hang on to the WC, play it in the last few weeks, and finish on a bunch of green arrows. While this no doubt feels great, and it comes in handy if you are in the late rounds of a knockout competition, there is no guarantee that just because your WC bump comes late it is any better or more influential than a WC bump realised earlier in the season; a kick finish doesn’t mean that your overall rank ends up better than if you racked up more points or team value before Christmas.

    2. The prepare-for-the-holiday-fixture-pileup WC

The point of this is to (a) take advantage of the WC to build TV in the first half of the season and (b) to do it late enough for it to help you run the holiday fixture gauntlet. The ideal time might be the 10-23 Nov international break (between GWs 11 and 12), or maybe later (although some would argue international breaks are best for building TV). This approach is sensible, but it doesn’t let you throw caution to the wind in GW1 the way a PEW does.

    3. The PEW

You pick your squad knowing you will WC after, say, GW 3 (the 1-14 Sept international break). Thus you only need to worry about the first three fixtures, you can use übers in every sub slot (you probably won’t use them if you plan right), and you don’t have to fret long-term viability generally. You just pick the best 11 for three weeks, and if you think that means RVP, Aguero, and Bale (I don’t) you can afford to have them because you just cheap out elsewhere; if you think it means a bunch of fixture-related punts, do that.

If the PEW sounds wasteful, consider this: by the end of GW3 last season Rooney and Aguero were out for weeks, Michu’s star had risen, Graham’s bandwagon had crashed, and countless other uncertainties were resolved in unexpected ways. We drive ourselves crazy in the run-up to GW1 only to have the entire landscape be different than we expected three weeks later. Many find themselves forced to wildcard (injuries forced me to last season), others cling to their WC by dint of hits and a handful of red arrows. Because there is a good chance of this happening, why not plan for it and get a chance of a fast start? Why not PEW?

I don't think you can fill up on bench fodder that way because its the first few eeks that tend tho throw up the nastiest surprises. i just generally plan a viable team for the firstr 6 weeks or so and see what happens.

Although 1 is always the ideal, 2 and 3 are usually what happens. Frankly, I tend to think 3 is best, because you can get on the hot starters before everyone gets them and you can get some differential benefit and the price rise. At least with the holiday-fixture-pileup, you can take advantage of long term planning and transferring people in over time. When it comes to 3, you have to deal with more of a strike when the iron gets hot situation.

Surely you missed the late-season DGW bonanza argument. Every season you'll get some late DGW which a late wildcard allows you to take advantage of.

arguments about picking a team for a few weeks apply irregardless of when the wildcard is played so really this boils down more to a decision to gain team value early in season over a few free games late in season.

Dbl gw point Could be even more relevant this season over others due to the world cup causing this season to be shortened by 11 days meaning less free days for rearranged fixtures. This could possibly even lead to a treble gw this season.

Great topic. I´ve only been playing for three seasons, but my experience is that early wildcard is the best for 99% of us. The rest 1% made a great initial team and are in the top 10k right off from the start.

In the uefa CL-game, or WorldCup or confederates/U21/ Europa Cup or whatever we ALL plan the wildcard since its coming fast and foresee-able.

I think the same goes for the FPL. The best is to plan the WC, and don't play it just because it snows one saturday in december, or 3-4 of your guys are suspended/injured. Take a hit for fixing this! Look at the fixture list now, and plan the wildcard. That way you will be able to create your team accordingly, pick players who have good fixtures up until GW X when you will play your card.

Personally I prefer the early wildcard, and now even with an acronym, the PEW ! I think team value is more important than many people on this site will admit. The PEW is the best way to raise your team value so that later in the season you won´t have to think about the value.

PLW (planned late wildcard) will surley give you a one shot at gaining say 50 points if you play it right. Maybe more, maybe 100? Since you are not only picking the right players for this december weekend when the snow has cancelled 3 matches, but also you pick the correct players for the following GWs.
Still you have probably missed out on some of the early risers, and maybe you could have been 50, or even 100points higher , AND have had a team value 2.0 higher, if you had played and planned the wildcard early in the first place.

So I am going for PEW, and I am fielding 3 m-city players GW1, maybe even double city defence.

        cheers

Get ahead and stay ahead is my credo.

If that means wildcarding early, then so be it. You get another one in January anyway. As far as fixture pile-ups and DGWs, I think it's a waste using a wildcard just for the sake of a messy week or two. Hopefully, you'd be able to navigate those with foresight rather than putting all your eggs in one basket & hoping for a monster week. Consistently above average triumphs over individual monster weeks. The monster weeks are lot down to luck - your captain bagging a hatty or whatever.

Definitely an interesting debate. Is #1 too little too late, harder to climb rankings with many template teams of in form players. #2 could be a bit wasteful with winter wildcard around the corner. #3 all of our supposed scouting out the window in a manner of a gw or two. Seems harsh. But it's making me think it's the reality, afterall it negates the unknowns each season will bring before its too late.

i'd wait and see on walters, he was the definition of a manger's player under pulis.
also worth noting that last season he was a winger for most games, makes him less apealing from an fpl perspective but also more at threat from hughes finding a specialist there.

if he maintain's his secure starts and pens from last season obviously a real option still, debateable though with pulis gone

I'm not sure how well I think Newcastle are going to do. Ben Arfa is quality but it all depends on how well the team around him are doing. Anelka might not be nailed on and I don't think Rodriguez will be prolific.

Bony and Lambert top. Bony has a good record but must be careful with Dutch league transfers, goals can be easy to come by there. Lambert is proven. RVW is good but I don't think he's quite as incredible as some have made out here... Kone I'm still not sure of either for some reason... Andy is injured right now but well worth a look later.

Think people are underrating Navas and Silva too. Navas was very eye-catching in the Confed Cup, regularly coming on as a sub and changing games with his explosive dribbling on the right. I assume he'll start for City. I predict he'll be a fan favourite, ironically he is a very English winger with his direct style.

Navas because his goal/assist count read 0/6 last year and Silva I am guessing because Hazard and Walcott are only 0.5 more. Silva has his fair share of fans though..

    Current team:

    Foster
    A.Cole - M.Turner - Coleman - Rat
    Lampard - Bale - Hazard (C)
    Aguero - Sturridge - J.Rod

    Subs: Boruc, Thomas, Koren, Shaw

The strategy is to go with 3 Chelsea players assuming a DGW, but make potentially 2 transfers before GW3 based on which big hitters do well in GW1 and GW2 to benefit from early price rises.

Lampard can easily be replaced by Mirellas, Hazard by D.Silva and A.Cole by just about any defender.

The rest of the team is balanced enough with a rotating 4th midfield and cheapo defenders even without any transfers.
