Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

Just a question about Free Transfers:

Is it better to trade early in the week to avoid price drops or get on price rises OR

is it better to trade last minute to get more accurate team news and avoid training injuries??

Trade early in the first few weeks.....Price rise is gonna be a nightmare.

After the first 10 gw's, you could make last day transfers when your team has a game midweek.

there is no right answer. I always try to make my team value grow but while you rarely get burned, you are running a risk.

Last season i thought i'd bring in a certain Belgian flyer before a price hike only for him to kick a ball boy minutes after i'd hit confirm.

I'll stick with the policy though, i like the risk to reward.

Trade early and jump on the price rises is always my policy early doors, taking a few hits along the way if necessary. Its a policy that has consistently worked well for me in the passed. The second half of the season is the time to be more risk averse.

Assuming Rooney goes to Chelsea, would you be happy with this lot?

    Foster
    Clyne / Collins / Luiz
    Hazard (c) / Walcott / Silva / Snodgrass
Rooney (vc) / Rodriguez / Aguero

    Boruc / Thomas / Turner / Chester

Is Mignolet, RVP a must? Have I got too much City?

    FPL Pre-Season F.A.Q.

    DZ Repost/Amended

    1. RVP or Bale?

This question is the biggest one when making a team this year. Some people are convinced one way or the other but there's really no right answer here. Bale only users emphasize a more balanced team without RVP and coverage of City, Liverpool and Arsenal, whereas RVP users say his past record and captaincy value make him worth the layout. Getting both is also an option, but you start seeing teams with significant losses in defense or rotating 5.0 mids. It more or less comes down to what you value more. Team balance and coverage or captaincy material and proven points.

*This is of course highly dependent on Bale staying at Tottenham. I feel we'll be seeing a lot more RVP teams if he moves.

    2. Which players to pick for the double GW?

Get Hazard. If you don't have him, I don't think many people on here will even look at your RMT. The large majority of people are also picking up a Chelsea defender. There is however no consensus on which is the best pick. Some say Luiz for his attacking potential. Some are with Cole for the most guaranteed minutes, others are going with Ivanovic. The punt here is Terry, but he's looking more and more secure considering Mourinho's encouraging comments.

The last few spots are really up to what your team build is like. Some who like to play it safe will pick up another nailed on Chelsea defender. A large majority are picking up Lukaku on the back of a strong pre-season and likelihood of starting the first GW. Others are considering midfield options like Lampard, Schurrle and Oscar (who looks to be winning the race for a central midfield spot).

The last real considerations are Benteke or Weimann. Benteke certainly has the pedigree, but the tough fixtures and the double gameweek blank put some people off. Weimann is a total punt, but he's cheap and plays twice, so why not?

    3. Mignolet + 4.0 or Rotating keepers

This one has some very strong supporters both ways. Mignolet defenders say his value and Liverpool's strong defense are worth it. Rotating keepers say that save points and backups in case of injuries or double gameweeks are more important. It really depends on what you think will score more in this case.

Liverpool kept more cleansheets than West Brom and Southampton last season combined. 16 compared to 8 and 7. Then you factor in the rotation of the keepers and Liverpool will for sure come out on top in terms of clean sheets (if going by last season's data). But the flipside, is of course, the weeks where Liverpool get blanks and the risk of Mignolet picking up an injury and leaving you without a keeper.

    4. Who are the 4.0 starting defenders?

    Parr
    Chester
    Ramage
*Turner - although there is talk he might not be nailed on to start
    Ward

    5. Rodriguez or Anelka?

There's been some movement from Rodriguez, who was the early season favorite, towards Anelka. Both are similarly priced although Anelka does save 0.5m. This is a tricky one. Anelka is cheaper, and has arguably better fixtures too. However, there is still no certainty he will start and despite his pre-season form, there are definite question marks over whether he can still cut it in the big leagues. Rodriguez on the other hand had a dark horse finish to the last season, scoring on a par with Lambert and leading the line. He is more expensive, and Southampton have slightly trickier fixtures, but at the moment, he's set to start and if he continues his good form from last season and pre-season, can be a really good pick. He's also got lower ownership which is a double edged sword of course. If he tanks, his price will plummet whereas if he does well, his price can also shoot up.

    6. Can you pick my team for me?

Sorry you're on your own. 🙂 I can however offer my opinions and I'm sure other members of the community will offer theirs which will often be the complete opposite of mine but no less valid. As you can see from the questions above, there's no right answer for a lot of these tough questions right now. It's all down to what you think will be more important and using your best judgment to come up with the best team you can.

Well, last season Hudson, club captain, picked up an injury, which lead to Turner and Connolly becoming the first choice CB pairing.
However with Hudson returning, McNaughton and the signing of Brayford, it is unclear as to whether Connolly will shift to right-back as expecting or stay at Centre-back, prompting Turner to be dropped.

He hasn't "won it" but basically Mourinho said he's thinking about moving Mata to the wing, and listed off a bunch of options like Hazard, Moses, De Bruyne but left out Oscar which makes people think he's considered a central midfielder. And as a mostly attacking player, he doesn't have much competition either. Lampard is a box to box and so is Ramires. Oscar is the only purely CAM in the team.

      My responses/answers/comments:

      1:
Bale and RvP are the only two 'safe' captaincy bets this year (until we see what happens at City and Chelsea)
If Bale stays, he is almost definitely the better option for 2m extra you only get 26 more points over the season, using last years figures (for a 2000 score you want 20 points per million, i.e. at least 40 points for the outlay)
There are also concerns regarding United under Moyes, but those may be overstated. RvP will definitely be key to Moyes being a success this season, and I'm sure he knows this.

Now things get really interesting if Bale moves, but that is speculation and not really worth discussing now. Seriously. Stop.

      2.
Agree Hazard is the definitive choice here (and GW1 captain) - I can't see a team without this pick. Mata is a worry with the Spain international fixture so steer clear for now, it's not worth the risk

Defenders all have pros and cons as mentioned above. Also factor that you probably don't want to use a Chelsea defender again until GW4 earliest and even that is away at Everton. If you do have a Chelsea defender pick up a Southampton one to play in GWs 2, 3 and 4 (SUN, nor, WHM). I say pick up because you don't want a forced transfer, but look to offload your Chelsea defender soon after.

Guzan is another interesting option from the Villa side - yes there's a chance of him taking two blow out games and coming away with nothing. But at 5m he's the best option for GW1 and rotates nicely with Boruc (costing you 9.5) - the only other cheap option is taking a gamble on who Sunderland start.

      3.
Mignolet plus 4.0 is just a bad decision, the same as picking Shane Ferguson as a 5th mid was last year. Don't go for non-playing players, it's just a bad strategy all round.
Mignolet has a good rotation with McGregor is all I'm going to add to this.

      4.
Nothing to add other than make sure you are picking starters.

      5.
I disagree that Southampton have tricky fixtures, all but 1 of their opening 6 provide options to score.
Also I think WBA showed last year that a player off the bench can definitely make an impact - look at Anelka to potentially pull off what Lukaku did.
With budget being so stretched the option to get both of these high potential strikers is really promising.

        Thanks for that!

I think we'll have to remain divided on Mignolet. As many know, I'm a big proponent and it's not the same situation as Ferguson. Mignolet will score more over the season (imo) as long as he doesn't get an injury. Spending another 0.5m on a keeper will be wasted for 10 weeks.

Southampton have decent fixtures, just not as nice as West Brom's first 3.

I guess it's not the same since outfielders get rotated more often, so there's that.

Mignolet will do really well, and I'm going to be bringing him in very quickly because 5.5 for a GK from Liverpool is great value.

Reina's score if you escalated it to the full 3420 is 153 points which isn't that exciting to be honest - it's good but not 40 point differential good. The trick will be to find this years Begovic/Jaas combo which oozed points.

This is assuming Bale leaves, taking into account Chelsea/Aston Villa DGW

      GK : Mignolet ( Given )
Def : Ivanovic, Zabaleta, Collins ( Chester, Parr)
Mid : Silva, Snodgrass, Hazard(C), Walcott ( Lingard)
      Fwd : Lukaku, Aguero, Aspas

      .5m in the bank

am debating atm whether aguero + aspas or negredo + sturridge or sturridge + benteke
gw2 i would down grade ivanovic
gw3 i would down grade either hazard or lukaku

a city 3 are a must for the opening 3 weeks as they have relatively 'easy' fixtures

let me know what you think 🙂

Podolski --> Giroud if you want an arsenal striker. Podolski doesnt really play upfront and wasnt nailed on last season.
      Navas --> Silva for me.
Paulinho is unproven, and not sure he'll get many attacking points.
      Wanyama - same as Paulinho.

Solid defence providing Toure is nailed on.

Nice to read Moyes rolling out a 4-3-3 formation. Kagawa, Rooney and RVP are too good not to be starting almost all of the time so just like after RVP was signed last season I hope we see United line up 433 with Kagawa in his favoured position as an advanced CM(this much, I beg), Rooney wide left/swapping wings with Nani/Zaha with RVP of course up top.

This is easier said than done with Rooney not as fit as he was when he played such a role with Ronaldo and Tevez (what an era that was) but this setup must surely be on Moyes's mind. Carrick will need a ball-winner alongside him though for sure- to be honest that's a need regardless of formation. I also do believe Rooney will NOT be sold to Chelsea as United do not simply hand the title over to their rivals like that.

I'd rather he played CB all the time to really become one of the best CBs in England and that is his best position. His ability to play RB and midfield can be useful when there is an injury crisis but not regularly. Fellaini would be a good and actually realistic signing IMO.

    The Lukaku Conundrum

Is Lukaku really a viable option as the 3rd Chelsea player (the other 2 being a DF and Hazard)? The reality is that Lukaku could be a great option for Chelsea if he was to start every game. This however is not the case so I simply do not understand all the love for him at the moment with pretty much every team having him in there for the DGW. In reality, he will probably play only 1 of the 2 games, if that, and will then be rotated in the other just as Mourinho rotated Benzema and Higuain for the whole of his time at Real Madrid.

That said, what are the other options for a 3rd Chelsea player?
    - Frank Lampard: Likely to be rotated due to his age but always seems to do it against all opposition, including lower positioned teams such as Hull and Villa in this DGW. With spot kicks in his locker as well he might be a safer option to Lukaku seeing as both will probably only 1 game.
Note: The rumours linking Chelsea with Khedira now since Real Madrid are buying Sevilla MF Kondogbia might mean even more competition for places for Lampard.

-Oscar: Encouraging words that he may be used in CMF but once again a rotation risk and there is no clarity about his place in the starting XI.

-Schurlle - Likely to be eased into the team in his 1st season in the Premier League so once again Lampard and Lukaku do seem the better options.

-Mata - One of the best FPL prospects but with the likelihood of being rested in the first game of the DGW due to Spain's match a few days earlier, he no longer seems like a very good option for GW1.

What about defenders? Maybe if the MF and FW spots are uncertain with the exception of Hazard, it would be wiser to load up on 2 CHE defenders instead. The problem here is that the defenders have no indication of being nailed on either and it would seem that only Ashley Cole is a safe option, despite many wanting to punt on Terry, Ivanovic or Luiz. Moreover, having 2 CHE DFs might screw up the balance of your team and this may be something that concerns quite a few managers who are trying to spread their money around evenly.

Conclusion: I personally am not sold on Lukaku because I think he is essentially a SGW (single gameweek) player for GW1, thus why pick him when I can pick anyone else who has a good GW1 fixture like Aspas/Sturridge, Giroud, Aguero/Negredo/Jovetic/Dzeko, etc etc. Perhaps the way to go is with only 2 CHE players instead but this too would be quite brave.
As I want to maintain the balance of my team early so I don't have to make double transfers to shift money from my defence to my attack, I think I am likely to be punting on Lampard/Oscar (if there is some more clarity) rather than Lukaku who I consider to be a definite rotation risk.
I understand why people are willing to punt on him for his fairly cheap 8.0 price and there is no real harm in doing it for 1 GW and then getting rid but I really don't see the benefit as he is clearly not the undeniable first choice, otherwise Mourinho would not be looking to fork out 25-30m on someone like Rooney.

Hopefully in a week or 10 days time when the season is approaching we will have more idea of what to do about a 3rd Chelsea player, but as things stand, Lukaku for me is just another FFS bandwagon gone out of control.

I disagree, even if he only starts one game he'll be worth it. Both Villa and Hull at home are great fixtures. If Chelsea don't sign another top striker I don't see why he wouldn't be 1st choice. Torres - yes he scored goals in Confed Cup but still not the player he once was, Ba - not good enough to be 1st choice imo. I'd argue Lukaku is the best player out of the 3, so what he's if he's young. A risk worth taking for me.

Interesting analysis. I would say he's worth it just because of Hull at home and the possibility of playing the second game.

There's an easy fix for him too. A nice easy sideways transfer to Giroud or Sturridge. A punt worth taking imo.

And if he starts the first then I definitely see him coming on in the second.
I can see him scoring a few goals if he plays.. will Mourinho drop an in form young striker and dent his confidence? I don't know.

        my 2 cents re: Lukaku;

The reason he is so popular is that his competition are Torres and Ba

Both of which have underperformed for Chelsea. Torres will be off if Jose can get him a move, I am sure Mourinho will want to get rid of him now he has seen him up close. Obviously he cant say this as there is a need to try and recoup a transfer fee. Rumours are that Napoli and Valencia (once Soldado is sold) may be interested.

Ba is nothing more than a squad player and will only be used when necessary.

Lukaku is young, powerful, hungry for success and has a point to prove.

Also if he scores 1 or 2 against Hull this will cement his place for Villa game.

This all points to picking up the big Belgian before his price rockets...

I might not want to transfer in Lukaku for the hopes of a DGW in the middle of the season.

But opening with him for GW1 is a different matter. As others say, even if he starts just one game....

The bandwagon does make sense though, as more transfer Lukaku in, the cost of not getting him (missing out on points that most others are getting) increases, and so it becomes more attractive to have Lukaku than not. That's one of the main reasons bandwagons like this take off, the fear of being left behind is greater (and rational) than the risk involved in getting on.

Add in the fact it's GW1, so he can be transferred out simply within 2 weeks before his blank and there's little risk.

Great post though, this DGW is a dilemma.

Just took a look at that post up there talking about price rises, and I thought to myself:

For this season I wish that bandwagons don´t work, for those of us who patiently wait for team news and have insight of the real value of a player to have the edge over knee-jerkers!

              Took the simple approach and went with;

              RVP
              Bale
              Baines
              Mata
              Walcott

Might put all things in front of them for reference to my blog for the hard work I've put into it.

Been told they can't have any reference to FFS for other ML rivals

Different from the template but I really like it. Only problem I would say is that you will have a benching problem because there is nobody from your front 8 who is particularly cheap/weak. For that reason I'd downgrade one of them (e.g. Morrison/Kagawa) and perhaps upgrade elsewhere

        week 1 drop ben arfa
week 2 transfer cech out for krul and drop lukaku
week 3 transfer bony in for lukaku and hazard doesnt play and thats as far as ive got...

      Re Lukaku

I don't think Mourinho really is afraid of playing young players and giving them minutes on the pitch. We all saw how he did that with Varane at Real Madrid. I am not saying that Lukaku would be nailed on, but the explosiveness and flair he has, even if he gets 120 minutes, he could easily grab a few goals and max bonus points in at least 1 game. A better option than Oscar/Lampard for me as, even if they do start, I don't think they have more potential for points than Lukaku. I am going with him.

I totally agree with you here... Everyone seems to be forgetting how he was a beast last season at WBA... And most of the time he came on as a sub as Clark went with a 4411 formation with Long up front...

I am impressed with Aspas. Saw him score a well taken goal and a nice back-heel to set up Gerard's goal. Definitely a differential.. Cheap option to Liverpool's attack as well...

I am thinking about whether to get Baines. I really like him as he not only has Oop midfield points (considering martinez loves the 3 at the back)... but he also has set piece duties.

Finally came out with my team:
        Migs (Davies)
        collins kompany baines (chester) (Parr)
        Bale Morrison Tonev Hazard (Snodgrass)
        Lukaku Giroud Aspas

        well fire away...

Not sure how long he's out for maybe the first game or so. I'm wondering if Nolan would be used as much if they sign Emenike. He's very quick and strong; a perfect player for in the hole to support the man upfront too as well as score.

Why not pick Mignolet, Lewis, Toure?

Doubling on Liverpool could be a very lucrative risk.

yeah - been mulling that. I am normally averse to doubling up at the back but some of the best guys on here seem to do it - so maybe I should to......

That said, the extra 0.5 allows me to spend 7.5m on a striker as opposed to 7 - at the moment this is the way I am leaning.

i.e. Lambert or berbs over the host of 7m options

3 reasons against the Mignolet bandwagon

          -Toure covers cheaper
-Spending 5.5+ or 9.5+ on what is effectively the least important spot of your 11
-Most importantly, there isn't the flexibility to buy 2 of Gerrard, Coutinho and Sturridge and I think the latter 2 will be well worth having. Aspas could be too.

Remember the prices of 11/12? 7.5 for a Chelsea defender!

Biggest mistake: Ditching RVP for Rooney, and refusing to get Bale because of past experiences owning him.

What I've learned: Not getting RVP 😛 Bale is essential.

Biggest mistake: Didn't get Michu till GW36 where he got 1pt, transferred him out thinking he was injured, he then scored GW37 😥

put too much emphassis on rotation - wasted my wildcard trying to optimise it.

        1. I took too many 4 point hits. Overall I don't think I came out on top, although often it was to avoid price increases in players I wanted for the following week.

        2. Trying to rely on inconsistent yet devastating players as captains (Suarez, Walcott mostly) despite having the safe bet in Bale.

What is the policy on using RMT and Projection data in comments?

i.e. can I share analysis made using said data (which may include giving out some of it)

An odd snippet to back a theory up but generally there shouldn't be any posting of member material on the boards.
