Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Cardiff boss Malky Mackay made his fourth foray into the summer transfer market yesterday afternoon with the acquisition of Steven Caulker from Tottenham. The 21-year-old centre-half joins the Bluebirds on a four-year contract for a reported club record fee of £8m and follows Andreas Cornelius, John Brayford and Simon Moore to the Cardiff City Stadium as Mackay strengthens his squad after last year’s Championship-winning campaign.

The deal represents something of a coup for the Welsh outfit – Caulker was linked with a move to Liverpool, with former Swansea boss Brendan Rodgers interested, while the departure of William Gallas from White Hart Lane had suggested he could be pushing for regular game time under Andre Villas-Boas in the season ahead. In an interview with the club’s official website, the defender went on to say:

“First and foremost I want to say how happy I am to have signed with Cardiff City Football Club. I’m delighted to be here and excited for this fresh challenge. I spoke to the Gaffer yesterday, liked what he had to say and am excited about the plans he has for the Football Club. You get the sense of excitement from everybody at the Club in the build-up to the season’s kick-off at West Ham and I’m really looking forward to being part of it. I thank Tottenham for everything they’ve done for me, having been there since I was a kid. But I’m here to back myself up now and show what I can do. This is a fresh start, a new chapter and I’m here to kick on.”

The History

A product of the Tottenham youth academy, Caulker’s career started back in 2009, when, over a season-long loan, he made 44 appearances and produced a pair of assists at Yeovil Town. The following year he was farmed out temporarily once again, producing two goals and a couple of assists over 29 appearances for Bristol City, winning the club’s Young Player of the Year award.

In 2011/12, Caulker was again sent out on loan but this time he remained within the confines of the top-flight, moving to newly-promoted Swansea. His game time was somewhat curtailed at the Liberty due to a knee injury, though the centre-half still managed 26 first-team appearances and provided a single assist during his time under Rodgers. With Younes Kaboul picking up a long-term knee injury in Gameweek 1 last year, Caulker was retained by Villas-Boas in his debut campaign at the helm and was afforded 17 starts and one sub appearance for the north London outfit, returning two goals and a pair of assists.

On the international stage, the centre-half has turned out for England Under 19 and Under 21s a total of 18 times, finding the net twice, and has scored in his only appearance for the senior side, netting in a 4-2 friendly defeat by Sweden last November.

The Prospects

While his installation at the heart of the Bluebirds back-four will certainly afford Caulker a far greater security of starts at Cardiff, his comparatively costlier price tag across most Fantasy games is a real deterrent. Initially listed as a Tottenham player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he comes in at 5.0 – less budget-friendly than any other likely starter in Mackay’s defence; Andrew Taylor, Mark Hudson and David Marshall are all 4.5, while fellow new boy Brayford is expected to mirror the trio’s cost. Caulker’s arrival raises real question marks over 4.0 priced Ben Turner’s place in the XI given that Hudson, as the club captain, should retain his starting role alongside the former Tottenham man.

Granted, the Bluebirds arrive with the best clean sheet record (18) of the three promoted teams and Caulker’s presence at the back is a real boost but with cheaper or similarly priced options offering greater defensive potential elsewhere, he’s likely to struggle to pick up any FPL suitors. In the Sky Sports game, though, the price is less of an issue – he comes in at 5.2 to Hudson’s 5.0, though a cost of 2.5 in The Sun Dream Team, compared to Hudson and Taylor at 1.0, is again likely to ensure he remains off the radar.

From a Tottenham perspective, Caulker’s departure now leaves just Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson to battle it out for the role as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner. Both come in at 5.0 in FPL and have the potential to afford us a decent value option – with Vertonghen struggling to shake off an ankle injury in time for the start of the new season, the duo could well be set to take their place for the Gameweek 1 trip to Palace and allow Villas-Boas to assess their respective form. Factor in a strong run of fixtures which sees Spurs face just two of last season’s top six in the first nine Gameweeks (cpl, SWA, ars, NOR, car, CHE, WHM, avl, HUL) and it’s clear that the Tottenham pair could barely be afforded a kinder platform to stake a case for consideration as the north London club look to push on from last term’s fifth place finish.

Everyone says Thomas. They specifically brought him in. Will play an advanced position and are looking for him to produce. Still, it's Palace and they still lost their best player from last season (Zaha) and have not really replaced him.

I've got a conundrum in GW1 fellas. I need to either

    1) Bench one of Snodgrass (H) or Mirallis (A).

Generally, I'd bench the away player, but Mirallis is OOP and has been tearing it up in pre-season.

OR 2) Currently, I'm set up in a 4-3-3, doubling up on WH defense against Cardiff.

    -----------------Mign
    Luiz-Lescott-Tomkins-Obrien
    -----Hazard-Santi-Mirallis
    ---Dzeko-Lukaku-Benteke-

I could pull Tomkins off and play a 3-4-3 w/ Snodgrass and Mirallis.
    ----------------Mign
    -----Luiz-Lescott-O'Brien
    Hazard-Santi-Mirallis-Snodz
    --Dzeko-Lukaku-Benteke

Leaning towards #2. Any advice appreciated.

RvP, the player that I'm most scared off as I don't have him in my team but just could have a blinder and sew his price rise.

Thing is though, if he does have a blinder straight at the start of the season, would there be many people able to bring him in unless using a WC early or a decent hit? Would need to be a lot move on to him for his price to sky rocket and therefore early WCs being played...

I'm trying to stay clear but don't want it to bite my in the ass especially if Bale leaves. My tram currently is Bale-less and RvP-less :/

Odds are that the PL will be Bale-less soon anyway.

And even if RVP has a great season, his price won't rise by much. The 14.0 is based on the assumption he'll carry on being great. Couldn't see him going more than 14.5

Will depend on ownership Wings F. Currently 36.4%, if he goes really big early, that's still a hell of a lot of FPL players that could transfer him in. Depends on early form.

That's what I'm thinking...it's going to be hard for people to make the necessary manoeuvres to accommodate him; that's been used as an argument FOR starting with him but it also provides some security for those of us going without. Should give us time to react (although on the flipside, it's been pointed out that his value is more likely to increase than drop due to his high ownership, and the way they calculate these things).

While that's true, his price makes it awkward. Not everyone will want to use their wildcard so early (especially the masses who have yet to realise it is a valid tactic, and may not realise they get another later on).

Ah Reedy, but those masses tend to play the game early, lose interest as season goes on and they do less well. That's massive leverage on transfers from people who don't really care and certainly don't give much thought to tactics beyond the bleedin' obvious.

Bit of early Russian roulette is possible.

You can't hope for him not to have a blinder because he will. He's the best striker in the PL. The only reason you should be without RVP is if you've decided you can get more points by spreading the RVP money around multiple big hitters who you can't afford otherwise.

Definitely looks like the most sensible midfield selection.

I am still not convinced that Lukaku will get nearly that much game time as surely Roman will bring in one more striker (not believing a word of Jose's Rooney or bust nonsense).

But I guess if you are going DGW or bust then worth the punt. Not my style though.

Yes, hunch is Kaboul. He has the class, wages and skill to be preferable. But we think AVB started to fall for Daws last season as the CB situation became dire. Daws got the armband and was very good for much of season.

Still, Kaboul's action has been limited thus far and Spurs have not played a lot of first choice players in preseason. AVB also seems to take quite a long time to bring injured players back into the mix, going back to last season. We'd hear Parker, Dembele, etc. was "fit" and in training but still not see them for a few weeks.

I am, and it's a moot point early since Verty will miss first 1-2 GWs probably. KaBoom was outstanding two seasons back, but missed all last season, and Daws surprised AVB. I would expect Daws/KaBoom first GW, then Verty with Daws, personally.

But it'll change a lot, they'll all get plenty of games, but less of this 'nailed on' malarkey.

I thought AVB liked Dawson? He was on the verge of leaving for QPR last year until 'Arry buggered off.
Kaboul did stat the 1st game last season so hard to know.
Chiriches should have been coming but it's fallen though because Bacarli is a scum bag, If he does come he'll be ahead of Daws and Kaboul

People who keep going on about RvP being worth the money because he is a good captain choice, do people not have any faith in players like Walcott, Santi, Hazard stepping up to the plate? It's not like RvP is the only player in the history of FPL to ever be captain material.

Santi and Hazard are terrible examples. Both are explosive and get the majority of their points in games against lesser sides, they can't be relied upon every week. Theo is more consistent but still his output is not as much as RVPs. RVP scores points in almost every single game and yes, outside of Bale at the end of last season that is extremely rare.

They have only had one season in the PL!

Now that they are used to it they can easily have the type of seasons that Mata, Silva, Suarez had in there second season. Santi especially can be devastating and Hazard under Mourinho could be the Lampard of 2005.

He won't start, and he's generally terrible. The high ownership is just from casual players who go for him because he's a 4.0 option at a team perceived to be better than Palace (Parr) and Hull (Chester), even though those two are nailed on to play most games.

    How does this look?

    Boruc / Foster
    D Luiz / Collins / Turner (NOR) / Clyne / Chester
    Hazard / Walcott / Silva / Coutinho / Thomas
    Sturridge / Giroud / Dzeko

I know the defence is a bit weak..
I'm thinking that with Dzeko's form and Pellegrini's comments he might be a starter.

Whats everyones (especially Chelsea fans, or just people wathching their pre-season matches) thoughts on Mata v Hazard?
The way i see it Mata is the safe choice, while Hazard without a doubt got the highest potential, but is he a nailed on starter? And is Mata?
I haven't seen or heard anything from pre-season, have they been doing well, and looking like goal threats?

Really would love to pick Hazard and free up that extra 1.0, but im afraid too much competition will result in too much rotation, making Mata the better choice.

Mata's being moved to the wing so I think Hazard may edge in front this year. Oscar is one to watch. Mata has an international friendly as well so he won't play both matches, best avoid.

Mourinho said he wanted Mata on the wing so he could get in the penalty area and finish with his left foot, and he was the only player that could do this, which is why i felt Mourinho said he was a safe starter. He also said he could use him in the middle.

But the point with internationals is good, easy start and a big squad, i guess Mou won't risk too much.

Mata has Oscar in the CAM role (the part where both were 'taking turns to influence proceedings'), either that or he'll be shunted out to the right wing which Mourinho seems to suggest is his role this season
I think Hazard's the better choice due to his superior goalscoring potential and Mata's hardly effective on the right wing

Funnily enough I did a specific follow up regarding Nolan with and without Carroll - think it was a Giggs Boson hot topic. My conclusion was that Nolan prospered with Carroll in the team (although whether this is coincidence and Carroll only played against cack teams I'm not certain!)

I'll see if I can dig the link up...

It is a tricky one - with those fixtures he's tempting me too, if Carroll was fit I'd be all over it but as it is I'm just not sure. Let me know if you find a convincing argument one way or another 🙂

Worried that he wouldn't get too many attacking returns. Snodgrass seems like a better option for the extra 1.0m, or even Mirallas for the extra 2.0m.

I think when the price list first came out everyone put Bale and RVP in first and only had room for one other 9m(+) mid and so Haz/Wally/Caz/Silva where all rated as better options, but now many are going without both let alone one of Bale/RVP suddenly we all have space for 3-4 of those players.

That and as stated he is having a blinding pre-season and cover on Sturridges injury hasn't hurt either.

Few people have asked me about Kim, so here's the lowdown (being speaking to few Cardiff Season ticket holders in work today)

    * He's nailed on in Cardiffs team.

    * Started a little deeper earlier in the season, but then took Whittinghams place 'in the hole' towards the end of the season.

*. Don't read too much into Kim's stats for last year as he as often deep, these improved as he shifted forward. The fans reckon he will hold this forward role.

*. Whttingham became out of favour, there was also a suggestion he ran out of steam. Which meant he was benched or pushed in a deeper or wide role where he didnt look the same.

*. Kim is Excellent on the ball, always has plenty of time, very creative and can pick out a very good pass.

*. He will take some set plays (corners in the main, as Bellamy etc likes a free kick)

*. If Whittingham is on the pitch, there is no chance as he's on ALL set plays as the best around.

Summary good value for a 5m mf, nailed on, will be in around the box.

Sounds good but I have one problem: his price. I know for a fact that in the first few weeks I'll want a player that I can't quite afford and will need to downgrade. If I've got £0.5m tied up in a 5th mid, he'd be the first for the chop and I'd end up spending 4 points to do it.

I might as well be realistic and get a £4.5m mid.

      Damn my knees!

I bow to your greater insight Evs but, if Ki, I thought he looked lightweight last season. Also, a hole role will be tough to get over Michu, especially if SWA get another half decent striker for Bony comp. A reasonable gamble perhaps, but I'd be all over Hernandez at £6m after the toughies and if he's looking sharp.

nope. he won't be starting at all. He missed most of the pre-season with an injury. Villa fans see Tonev as a winger thus he will be in competition with Agbonlahor & Weimann. Pretty hard for him to dislodge either of them.

Helenius impressed during the pre-season especially with his vision & passing. So he could possibly be handed the no.10 role in the squad.

Question: At the beginning of the season, if it looks like Bale is going but the deal is yet to be done, will he still be in your team for a reshuffle later? Or are you going to ignore him, to save on taking hits at a later date? Conundrum there.

Trying to decide if I am more surprised by the fact that Spurs agreed to sell Caulker or that he choose to make Cardiff his new home! As a Liverpool fan I was hoping that BR would show a bigger interest, still maybe if Cardiff go straight back down he could snapped up at a cheaper price next summer.

No way Spurs would sell Caulker to a rival. He apparently wanted out and playing 90 each week. That wouldn't necessarily happen at LOLpool.
