PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 1

Having rolled out our Strategy Guide for the weekly Fantasy game over at www.playon.co.uk, yesterday, we now turn our attentions to the player list as we hunt for bargains ahead of the opening weekend.

Gameweek 1 Player Picks

While many Fantasy games have a double Gameweek 1 for Chelsea and Villa, PlayON have limited the Gameweek to just 10 fixtures – excluding Tuesday’s showdown at the Bridge. This affords us a more even playing field as we assess the potential on offer and, as we’ve discovered, PlayON have handed us some budget gems to consider ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off. Here’s out pick of the bunch:

Goalkeeper – Ben Foster
The cheapest keeper on offer in this week’s game, Foster will set you back a mere 6.0 ahead of a home game against Southampton. While they tightened up at the back as the previous season unfolded, Mauricio Pochettino’s side scored just three times over their final five road trips – prompting plenty optimism for a Baggies clean sheet at the Hawthorns tomorrow afternoon. Alternatively, United’s David De Gea takes up just 6.8 of your budget and may appeal to those who reckon the champions will nullify the threat of Michu and Wilfried Bony at the Liberty tomorrow evening.

Defender – John Terry
Chelsea’s skipper prepares to welcome Hull to the Bridge in Jose Mourinho’s first match back in charge. While the likes of Branislav Ivanovic will set you back 10.4, Terry has been very kindly priced at just 7.4 by comparison and looks set to get the nod at the heart of defence against the Tigers on Sunday. Those looking for similarly priced alternatives may turn to United’s Phil Jones (7.5) – set to step in for the suspended Rafael at right-back, his foraging runs down the flank could come to fruition at the Liberty, while Norwich’s Michael Turner comes in at just 7.0 ahead of the home clash against Everton.

Midfielder – Steven Gerrard
The Liverpool captain is another one who looks like an intriguing option as Brendan Rodgers’ side get set to welcome Stoke to Anfield tomorrow lunchtime. Gerrard comes in at just 7.7 in this week’s pricing list – putting that into perspective, Philippe Coutinho is 10.4 while Norwich’s Robert Snodgrass is 11.7 – and with spot-kicks, set-piece and corners boosting his attacking appeal, Gerrard should also benefit from a scoring metric which rewards defensive work, with tackles and interceptions also key to our selections. Those looking for a budget punt may have an eye on 6.7 priced Jack Wilshere; with Mikel Arteta ruled out, he looks good to start against Villa, either alongside Aaron Ramsey in central midfield or in “the hole” behind Olivier Giroud.

Forward – Olivier Giroud
With just two places available for our frontlines, gambles are always ill-advised. The Frenchman still splits opinion across the Fantasy fraternity but he welcomes Villa to the Emirates tomorrow on the back of an eight-goal haul across the pre-season friendlies – more than any other player in the top-flight. At just 8.3, he looks a strong choice against a side that conceded in each of their last 22 Gameweeks in 2012/13.

How To Play

Once your starting XI is built (you can change your team as many times as you like up to two hours before the first kick-off) you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of wining your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge another player to a one-on-one game, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Gareth Southgate and Opta Joe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged.

The Fantasy Football Scout Game – £500 Guaranteed Pot

Our £2 multiplayer game, dedicated to our community, is now open and PlayON are offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1 – the pot has already grown above this and currently sits at £636 and rising. Register an account and throw your hat in the ring for a share of the spoils.

Challenge Your Mates

You can also set up your own multiplayer games with your mates. While we have some Fantasy Football Scout games to enter, there’s an incentive to set up your own this week.

If you set up a £2 game and get 10 players and £20 in the pot, then PlayON will add an extra £5 in prize money to your game.

Create your own game at www.playon.co.uk.

Finally, a reminder that we published a strategy guide, offering some tips for getting the most from your PlayON lineup, right here.

PlayON is a form of gambling so you have to be aged over 18 and over to play and, if you do wager some cash, please remember to gamble responsibly.

    RMT please

    Cech, Marshall
    Mert, Toure, Collins, (Clyne, Burner)
    Walcott, Hazard, Mirallas, Snodgrass, (Kim)
    Benteke, Lukaku, Anelka

Leaves me £5m in the bank to upgrade Benteke to RVP in GW3. Thoughts?

Repost, but in my little head it is a good idea 🙂

I think we should have some big red NB!!! part on the bottom of every article that has written down all the things that have been established already today and other fantasy related FAQ, and things that wont be established unless we get further news.

A la. We dont know who will play goalie for Sunderland
We dont know who plays 180 for Chelsea- wait for fridays presser
Best 4 mil defenders: nailed on... ... .../ not nailed on... ... ...

Maybe some links added. Would reduce about 50% of the post traffic on busy times I think

Ok. I am all set I think.
Leaving £1m spare to go Cole to a 4.5 and Lukaku to Aguero week 2.
Whether Rooney is Chelsea/United or Suarez Liverpool/Arsenal, I think they will be good options in time.
So I am getting Aguero for flexibility between those 3 and easier upgrading to RVP if necessary.

    Leaving Negredo and going Soldado as I will have Silva and Aguero week 2. I think its wise to get 1 in these price brackets striker wise as it offers excellent flexibility;

    7-8, 9-9.5, 10.5-11.

In time, that will be the template.

So for those wondering about Aston Villa's likely line-up, as a season ticket holder (and watcher of their pre-seasons on AVTV) I hope to give a bit of insight.

Almost certainly we will line up as follows:

    Guzan

Lowton Vlaar Okore(maybe Clark- fitness issue) Luna

    Westwood Tonev Delph

    Gabby Benteke Weimann

Lambert is fairly loyal to his starting eleven barring injury, however he does occasionally throw a spanner in the works. Bennett may replace Luna the odd week, and our central defence may get a few switcharoos (Vlaar will always be there, but the second spot may be shared between Okore and Clark). Note: Baker will only be considered if Clark and Okore are both injured. He is a pointless buy fantasy-wise as, in my opinion, will only play 10 games this season, and most of them will be from the bench.

    Likely points scorers:

Not sure I need to evenmention Tekkers, do i? He absolutely dominated every defence he played against in pre-season (his biggest challenge was Malaga, but looked a beast). Holds the ball up incredibly, has so much power its untrue ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsX8H7dNJIE ) and seems to be able to score against anyone. We may be beaten 8-2 by a team, but he'll be the one to get the 2 goals. Fixture-proof/ Nailed on - you'd be mad to go without!

Weimann will play alot this season. He will also probably get 10-12 goals. He's quick, intelligent, can score with all parts of his body and from crazy impossible angles (scored twice past United last year). At 6m could really be a steal. One reservation maybe that he does have the propensity to drift out of games. As a result, he becomes one of the most likely players to get subbed off at the 60 minute mark.

Gabby is another one of Lamberts nailed-on lads. His pace is ridiculous (saw someone debating who is the fastest Premier League player, Bale or Walcott - Gabby by a mile. He used to be a sprinter before he became a footballer). His crossing has improved immensly over the last few years, so assists should be where Gabby gets a good few points. He's also got incredible composure in front of the goal which will see him get at least 8-10 goals this year.

Tonev looks an interesting prospect. During his brief pre-season display (looked quality) he was on all set-pieces and drifted nicely in the hole behind Benteke. Got himself an assist against Malaga and cracked off a fair few long rangers in the process. The trouble is, he has no proven track record in the PL. He could be an Gerrard waiting to happen. Or he could be an Ireland. There's purely no way of second guessing how his season will go. A few dodgy games may see him sit on the bench for a while.

    Now, our defence. Ha!
No Premier League cleansheet since October 2012. Only kept one clean sheet in seven pre-season games (and we played a few duff teams). However, having said that, I genuinely believe that we wont be as rubbish as last year. Last season was an all new back 4 and we were still (cliché alert) 'gelling'. As a whole team actually, not just as a defence. Because of that, we only kept 5 clean sheets out of 38 games. This season however, there IS a new breed of confidence, a sense of putting right all the wrongs of the last few seasons (those more experienced Fantasy managers will remember the days of Villa challenging the top 5, with defenders scoring for fun and costing 6m a pop. Martin Laursen anyone?). So, while I'm not expecting 19 clean sheets at home, I am entertaining the realistic idea that we will keep 10/11.

On top of that, add Vlaar's goal threat (only 2 goals last year, but already off the mark in pre-season) and Lowton's assist potential (4 last year. I expect that to double), then there is some value to be found in the once inept Villa defence. Make that inept team.

Good stuff. Not wishing to belittle your knowledge but someone was on earlier who had been lurking in the Villa forums and he said the consensus there was that Tonev wouldn't start. I don't know what the reasoning was though. How certain are you about him starting? I'd have him over Kim if I thought he'd get regular gametime.

Yeah, I've heard the same whispers. It's purely because his lack of pre-season. It could be a gamble to throw him in straight into Arsenal away, but he's a Bulgarian international with expereince, looked the real deal in his pre-season cameo and looked like he slotted in perfectly. Lambert is the type to give a playera baptism of fire too.

If he's not injured, I'd be very disappointed/ surprised not to see him start.

What do you think of Westwood's prospects? I had him in mind when expecting him to be 5.0 but when the game opened and his price was set at 5.5 he went straight out the window FPL-wise for GW1.

    Repost 🙁

    RMT please!

    Mignolet (Davis)
Ivanovic Coleman Mertesacker (Turner (NOR) , Chester)
    Walcott Snodgrass Hazard Coutinho (Pennant)
    Benteke Soldado Lambert

I am a bit worried about Pennant, not sure if he will play, if he will I will keep him, if not, what are other good 4.5m mids?

    Also, Turner or Clyne?

    Any other thoughts?

    Thanks

      3 posts in a row about 4.5 mids 😀

I also thought of Pennant but can't really see him starting.

I think there is no consortium for a worthy 4,5m MID. I have 3 Chelsea players hence I definitly need a back-up who is definitly nailed on for GW3. Therefore I prefer to go with a 5m MID til fo find which 4.5m MID will be settled

The team news suggest Brady will play as left forward. That means OOP. Also he is mentioned as set pieces takers in the related tab. Hence, I prefer him over Kim.

Does anyone disagree with this opinion?

So I want either Shaw or Clyne.

They will be on my bench this week but I definitely need them next week.

Which one should I go for?

I'm going for good old dependable Clyne, I also don't need him this week. He served me very well last season so i have no urge to go for Shaw.

Won't play this month apparently. Sounds like he's been getting advice from Robbie Savage on how to engineer a move:

    Mignolet (Davis)

    Mertesacker, Cole, Zabaleta (Brayford, Chester)
Michu, Coutinho, Mirallas, Hazard c, (Colback)
    Dzeko, Soldado, Lukaku v

Or should I swap- Michu, Miralles for Walcott + Nolan/Snod. Could see Swansae doing well in this game but a bit more of a gamble? Any thoughts?

I think I'm steering clear of Wally first game because I don't want to get done by an injury but, in my eyes, he is the most essential player this year.

I wouldn't get either Nolan or Snod though.
