The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

City turn on the style as Manuel Pellegrini gets his Etihad tenure up and running with a devastating display against an out-of-sorts Newcastle. While the hosts dazzled going forward, their injury problems at the back mounted after their skipper was subbed off before the final whistle:

The Game Changer

With four goals over the pre-season fixtures, Edin Dzeko had finished the summer as top scorer for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The new City boss had responded by suggesting the Bosnian was his main striker – a comment many thought that, somewhere along the line, had been lost in translation.

A brace for Bosnia in last week’s defeat by the USA, however, signalled his form ahead of this evening’s match with Newcastle and Pellegrini backed up his faith by selecting Dzeko over Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic as Sergio Aguero’s partner in a 4-2-2-2 formation.

Fantasy managers have been stung by Dzeko before but tonight’s showing is hugely encouraging for a player that is so favourably priced across the Fantasy games. He may have delivered just one assist from this evening’s encounter but his display deserved so much more – he managed an impressive eight shots; equalling the sum total offered by David Silva, Aguero, Yaya Toure and sub Negredo. With a trip to Cardiff and home clash against Hull, he looks the ideal replacement for those looking for an escape route from Romelu Lukaku.

The Underused

Having failed to play all pre-season, Sergio Aguero was treated with caution by Fantasy managers as the campaign got underway. With summer recruits Negredo and Jovetic added to the mix, it looked more likely than Pellegrini would ease him back into the fold for the first three games, affording Aguero time to return to full fitness over September’s international break.

Instead, the Argentine was installed alongside Dzeko for the demolition of Newcastle, with Jovetic unable to even make the bench. As the hosts swept the sorry Magpies aside, Aguero was quick to open his account for the season – slotting home just after 20 minutes to put his side two ahead.

Subbed off just after the hour mark, it’s apparent Pellegrini will remain careful with his game time but, while Robin Van Persie squares up to Chelsea and Liverpool in consecutive weeks, Aguero’s 7% Fantasy Premier League ownership makes him a deadly differential for back-to-back showdowns against two promoted sides.

The Selection Poser

The sight of Vincent Kompany limping off with what appeared to be a groin problem leaves Pellegrini sweating on his defensive options ahead of the trip to Wales. With City’s other first-choice central defender Matija Nastasic still to return to action after sustaining an ankle injury over the summer, Joleon Lescott’s security of starts now looks a little more secure at the heart of defence.

Micah Richards’ official twitter account has this evening claimed he, too, is sidelined “for a few weeks” with a hamstring injury – potentially, Javi Garcia may have to slot in alongside Lescott if the injuries don’t improve over the weekend. Depending on the Kompany prognosis, Pellegrini may go shopping for cover before the transfer window is closed.

Morning all. Thinking of bringing in Silva, but already have Zabs and Dzeko. Would 3 be too much City?

No I don't think so. You'd probably want to sell Dzeko when rotation hits anyway.

In a few weeks time I have a feeling this could be the optimum front 3.

    RVP, Soldado, Bony

This is mainly because of fine fixtures and because there are few viable alternatives in their sides. An argument could be made for Michu as Swansea cover, but for 1m less Bony is likely to be better value.

I think you might be right. Not sure why, but I'm not completely sold on Soldado. I do think RVP has to come in at some point and a lot of us are waiting for Swansea's fixtures to lighten up. RVP'sprice may necessitate Bony over Michu. I haven't done the math but it would be interesting to see how the rest of that team looked.

I had Koscielny and since he is suspended in GW 2, I took Luke Shaw who showed good attacking potentials in the Saints game.

Now am confused whether to take a hit in order to get rid of Lukaku for Dzeko, who for the moment I think is nailed on after playing well despite getting only a single assist.

Certainly Chelsea vs Aston Villa midweek match is stopping me momentarily from doing this now. Do you reckon Lukaku to Dzeko as a good move?

    Dzeko yay or nay

Havr to remove Lukaku , and thinking long and hard about bringing in Dzeko

    Positives

    1) Looks very sharp
    2) Will get lots of chances
    3 Easy fixtures
    4) He an easy swap due to his prce
    5) Not many similar priced alternatives. Lambert has new competition , Bony hard game in europe

    Negatives

    1) Rotation , one of the best strikers in europe is not going to stay on bench forever (Negredo)
    2) Many chances , but no goals . Manager praised his performance , but also pointed that out
    3) City points are spread between so many players , and they not going to be playing 10 demorilised players every week
    4) Could never risk making him capr
    5) Given the first game as reward for good pre season , or even being put in shop window for potential sale? Or being kept happy till after the transfer window closes , before going back on bench (take your pick)

What are people views on this ?

I think he's going down. A lot of transfers are going to be made today. Our only hope is that totalfpl hasn't figured out the price drop formula yet, and he has a lot further to go than they think.

100% is the point at which totalfpl expect the price to rise, but there is no certainty about it. The secret formula used by FPL may have changed since last season, or there may be some randomness involved.

Also, the data for transfers in and transfers out used for totalfpl's estimate and for FPL's price change decision may not have been taken at exactly the same time - totalfpl only sample this data about once an hour.

Also, totalfpl and fiso sometimes make mistakes. For example, a couple of days ago fiso were underestimating Coleman's NTI because they appeared to have counted his transfers out as 6000 when they were really only 600.

Trigger, you laid out the pros and cons well.

Put simply if i didnt have him now i wouldnt get him.

I am sure he will start the next match but after that who knows? Then you are transferring him out again? Or holding onto a player who you never really know if he will start.

I like stability and minutes out of my forwards. Lambert is still a good pick imo

Negative #1 rules him out for me, at least while we are unsure of his role. Aguero still getting back to fitness, and Negredo is being integrated into the squad. Maybe after he secures more starts and/or after the transfer window closes.

I need someone at that price or lower to get RVP in gw4. With his next two fixtures, I feel he is worth the risk over lambert or whoever else fits in that price range. I realise he might have to go down the road, but he is worth the risk for me right now.

I have him and am keeping him for the foreseeable future. If I didn't have him I would probably bring him in. I thought he looked brilliant out there, though he needs to finish better. Even if he doesn't start, how many times did he come off the bench to score last season? Certainly not captain material most weeks, but solid value for 7.5, allowing you to spend elsewhere.

If you haven't already got him, don't get him. Bony will be much better value in the long term. Dzeko is an imminent transfer waiting to happen. Why waste two on him to buy him in then sell him on in a few weeks when Negredo begins to start the odd game.

We non owners were very lucky today though , he could of easily had a hattrick.

On the other side of the coin i believe Negredo WOULD OF had a hattrick. He was only on ten minutes and scored a perfectly good goal , more than Dzeko managed iin the 90

Don't let price rises drive your decisions.

At the moment, I'd focus on

      1) How would you get a good XI in gw3 without taking too many hits?
      2) What is your entry plan if a big gun gets going? Say Aguero, Kagawa or Mata fire in gw2
      3) What is your backup plan for transfers that might happen? We might have Rooney move or Bale stay or a new signing at Arsenal.

Mourinho seems to be determined playing Oscar as No.10.
Shame that I was so scared of not having Chelsea strikers for DGW & changed my plan.

Little twist on my approach of exit route of DGW player.
Initially it was Lukaku & Terry Out.

Now I m going for Lukaku & Hazard Out!

Coz' Terry is starting all under Mou.With new BPS system, favors him too.Goal threats from the air.

    Benteke looks like Season Keeper.

Lukaku is a huge rotation threat than I thought abt.

Oscar at hole....too hard to ignore! In my plans after the blank. He has shown his goal scoring ability in European competitions.Likely, we're seeing that now in BPL this season.

In a dilemma to Save Transfer or Jump into Dzeko- Bandwagon!

I think you're right about Terry. I was afraid to get him this week because I wasn't sure if we would play both, but long term, he should be great. Lukaku I would get out, but I'm not sure about the Dzeko bandwagon. I have Dzeko, but I'm very wary about it. You need to have a transfer on hand for the next couple weeks until it's clear that he really is first choice.

This is a ridiculous, but what about wildcarding into something like this in the coming weeks?

    Boruc -- Mignolet
    Verntonghen -- Zab -- Terry -- Toure -- Hangeland
    Brady -- Cabral -- Thomas -- Kim -- Mirallas
    RVP -- Aguero -- Soldado

3 premium defenders and 3 premium strikers, then 7 defenders/midfielders to rotate for the last 4 spots (or 6 for 3 with one midfielder playing every week). One week is, of course, an awful sample size, but I think strikers and defenders will earn the most bps and I'm not overly impressed by any of the midfielders. I seriously doubt I'll actually do this, but I am going to take some money out of my midfield.

The thing is cheap defenders can still garner lots of points consistently. A plucky 0-0 against a team can give your 4.5 defender 6pts which is much more likely than a specific player pops up with an assist or goal against usually bigger teams.

Yes, but in a 0-0 draw between, say Fulham and Southhampton, Hangeland and Lovren will get 8 or 9 and the 4.5s will get 6.

Bony did just as well against United as Soldado did against Crystal palace, and he only played half a game. The Bony wagon is just getting into gear and is set for the long term. Stay clear of short term thinking.

I'd wait to see what effect Europa has on Swans, gives time for fixtures to clear up too.

Fixtures + Euroleague for Swansea = not quite yet IMO. Dzeko first, then Bony for me I reckon. Or as a Giroud replacement in a couple weeks.

😛 From both perspectives it works though. If I didn't already own Dzeko I believe Bony is still the better pick.

For the next two weeks though? Two promoted sides for Dzeko, two potential top 4 (Little optimistic in Liverpool's case but it's not impossible) sides for Bony with Euroleague fatigue thrown in? I think I'd probably take 120 minutes of Dzeko over 180 minutes of Bony for the next two. The question is will he get those 120?

You'd have to factor an -4pts if you go for Dzeko. Its an extra transfer you'd have to make because inevitably Negredo will start ahead of him leaving Dzeko to a familiar super sub role.

Considerable bt wouldn't it be wiser to save the transfer and 2 Transfers next week that makes u easy to go into any player u want(except RVP prolly).

Just Hoping Lukaku with a big haul to resist his drop!

You're possibly right. You'll be missing out on a price rise so if that doesn't bother you then its a fair tactic. I do believe however that Bony could potentially be fixture proof. He is this years Michu.

I agree on Bony. Just not yet.

Have you thought about gw 4->

Some very good fixtures for some team, especially the strikers.

          When you WC?

I don't plan my WC's so I have no idea when I will use it. Yeah I have a GW4 plan in place to get RVP but I might re think that one.

    Help guys

I've Already done mertesacker > Coleman but really wanting to do Lukaku > dzeko , is it worth a 4 point hit before any price hike? Don't like taking hits but this could prove worthwhile? Thoughts?

Lukaku should play against United, Id hold until you hear otherwise. They will be away, playing on the counter.

I told everyone Lukaku wouldn't start over Torres week 1

    Wildcard played. As planned.

Already nervous about Dzecko (c) GW2........ its a rollacoster.

Hoping for a Hazard/Wiemann/Bentekkers goalfest tonight to justify my loading up with 6 DGW. Wouldnt mind if Tonev could actually play too 🙂

Whenever a top striker arrives everyone else is at risk. Those that own the old main striker may not wish to admit it.

Considering a -4 for this move. Is this too knee jerky?

    Hazard/Bennett to Silva/Shaw

    rest of the squad:
    Migs (Davis)
    Zab Toure (Chester Turner)
    Barkley Coutinho Walcott (Ramirez)
    RVP Anelka Benteke

I'm sure many of you are looking at similar Chelsea exit moves for the ManU/Blank
