Monitor – Philippe Coutinho

Heading into the home game against Stoke, Philippe Coutinho was one of the most popular picks around. Second only to Eden Hazard in terms of midfield ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Liverpool winger was heavily backed to run riot against the Potters after a thrilling first few months on Merseyside last time round.

Unfortunately for his Fantasy owners, Coutinho returned a blank while Iago Aspas and Daniel Sturridge picked up the points after combining for the Reds’ match-winner. As we edge ever-closer to the weekend’s fixtures, we take a look back at the Brazilian’s display against Mark Hughes’ side and assess the underlying data in our first Monitor article of the new season.

  5. Benteke the Essential Answer to RvP?
    - DC -

    IS BENTEKE ESSENTIAL?

I believe he is starting to be and was getting close at points last season. Home or away he can be deadly, I remember when we got beat 3-1 at Anfield, he was instrumental. They've just beaten Arsenal 3-1 at the Emirates. He seems to be fixture proof, because he does it against the better sides, he can also be explosive, I still remember his hat-trick last season, it was amazing having him in your team when he did that. Also on penalties, captain option and seems to be Villa's go to man and main points scorer in a counter attacking, pacey on the wings team. Leaky at the back, but up front Benteke is THE MAN.

    But is he essential?

I think he is and I also think a steal at £9.0m. So glad he is in my team and was last season. I feel safe. Probably the only player I feel safe with, the other is van Persie.

Is he THE alternative to the other man?

In turn you do not have the European matches and rotation headache that a Citeh striker will inevitably give you. And a 2 million less than KUn, I may stick with Benteke.

I planned to go with 3 DGW'ers, Ivanovic, Hazard and Lukaku.

But I just couldn't leave my man Benteke out.

Lukaku will be the one moving on for me. I can't lose Benteke.

I captained him in the Sky game this week aswell even knowing it was Arsenal away.

          Never lets me down.

        Benteke aint going anywhere.

The fact that Agbonlahor and Weimann look in form, makes me even more comfortable holding Benteke. They have some attacking full backs aswell, it all centres around Benteke.

I'd struggle to pick him as my captain over someone from a top 6 team. He won't get two penalties every week and was pretty anonymous apart from those goals.

Home or away it doesnt matter with him.

So pleased I've had him from the start, can see him easily rising to £10mill like Suarez did last season. Season keeper for me baring any injuries.

yes, absolutely essential season keeper for me, and in combination with one or two other strong forwards (Soldado, Lambert, Negredo etc) they could easily out-score RVP plus 2 cheapies IMO.
I also think Villa in general, even defense, are going to be stronger this year

He got 2 goals from 2 penalties (one of which got saved by a poor penalty stopped and then he got really lucky) and did nothing all game against a team with 10 men. I'm not saying he is a bad option, but you cannot be basing having him on the Arsenal game! Certainly no need to get him until GW4 at the earliest!

      Good effort, I strongly agree, but you need some stats to back up your arguments. Here you go;
2013: RVP goals 14, Benteke 16 goals. Not sure about number of assists but RVP had 15 for the entire season vs Bentekes 4.

DC, I'm a Benteke holder, I've no RVP and I'm sitting comfortable at the moment though i confess that the attraction was based on pre-season form and the DGW. The major plus for owning Benteke is that for a prolific striker, he has very little competition for his position and is a guaranteed starter, which simply isn't the case for forwards from the big 6. Rule number 1 for FPL is making sure your players start. There are loads of great forwards, Negredo, Soldado, et al but I hate the worry of rotation so for the time being I'm stocking until the alternatives are proven and certain to play. Second, he's on set pieces so even when he doesnt perform, there's penalties which yield points throughout the season. And oh yes, lest I or get, he's a great finisher in a team on the up, playing fantastic counter attacking football, and for those reasons alone, for now, I'm sticking.

They will do from time to time. Patience!

As a Liverpool supporter, Coutinho is on another level entirely, the only other player we have who can perform at that level is Suarez. Everything is going through Coutinho and he looks so so dangerous every time he is on the ball. He can score and his vision to pick a pass is unbelievable.

He is an amazing player and a joy to watch. He is so far ahead of opposition defenders, he can take them one way and then the other in the blink of an eye. He's done things and fooled me watching on the TV, just imagine how defenders feel?

Love the article - he's one to keep for now, obviously. A little deceiving only judging by one home game against Stoke, but I like what I saw in the game & the stats here.

    Boruc(Mignolet)
    Ivan Coleman Dawson Ward Chester
    Hazard Coutinho Wally Zaha Whittingham
    Lukaku Benteke Studge

Does it sound crazy to do Ivan,Haz,Lukaku,Zaha>Zab,Silva,Aguero+4.5 for a 12pt hit? 12pts seem a lot, but with Lukaku n Zaha prices sure to drop by the end of the week, and Zab n Silva on the rise, I may never be able to do this again. Or are there any other solutions? Of course, I'll wait till tonight's game to do it, opinions?

Though one... Zaha may get a look in if Moyes rotates... Silly to get rid of all Chelsea coverage, as Mourinho only lost once at OT I believe... Would do 2 transfers, else if you really unhappy maybe wc?

    Hazard 36.4%
    Ivanovic 28.3%
    Lukaku 18.3%
    Benteke 25.1%

The question is how many have all 4 🙂

So, I have Sturridge and Coutinho. But no City or United cover.

    Should I get:

    1.Silva for Coutinho
    2.Aguero for Sturridge
    3.RvP for Sturridge
    4. Stay with Coutinho and Sturridge and ignore United and City cover.
