The Knee Jerk – Monday

Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Hello!

I have a dum dinger for this week:

    Boruc | (Cech)
    Koscielny | (Brayford) | Toure | Collins | Coleman
    (Hazard) | (R.Morrison) | Walcott | Mirallas | Coutinho
    Dzeko | Welbeck | (Benteke)

I only have 10 players next week! 1FT....Do I transfer a non starter (Morrison, brayford) or a non player (haz, tekkers)

I think the best move is Hazard > Silva?

From how I viewed it, Kim was the most attacking one in terms of runs and positions. Whitt has the set-pieces to lean back on. I'd go Kim or Whitt. Started with Kim and happy to hold, not sure there is too much between them.

OK, so maybe you are the one to help. I am looking to dump Hazard this week for a 5.0m midfielder so as to bring in RVP from GW4 - I am currently favouring a Cardiff midfielder given their home potential and easier fixtures. Undecided between Kim and Gunnarsson though - any tips/thoughts? Both seem to offer starts and potential for goals/assists. Thanks.

No question there's a mass movement to get rid of Hazard this week, I wasn't planning on being part of it just yet so I'm keen to understand the motivations and see if it changes my mind. What are people's primary reasons for wanting to get rid?

A - GW 3 is difficult enough to field a decent XI even without having a £9.5m midfielder clogging up my bench.
B - The fixtures past the blank are a bit meh, I'll consider getting him back in GW 8.
C - The lack of FPL returns so far has got my knee jerking.
D - I've watched the actual games and the subdued/more defensive nature of his performances has convinced me he's overpriced.
    E - Frank Lampard.
F - His price will drop and I can't afford to lose the team value.
    G - Other (please state)

Feel free to pick multiple options 🙂

A, B, C and F for me, but mainly A & F. I'd rather Silva over my 5th mid, and he has decent fixtures for the next few so it's not just a one week thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Haz dropped twice and Silva rose an additional time, and a 0.2/0.3 difference in value isn't to be sniffed at.

      G) I have two conflicting thoughts that are making it difficult for me to decide if I want to get rid:

      1) Keep Hazard, the midfielders on offer are very poor (Walcott, Michu, Nolan the best of the bunch)
      2) Sell Hazard as I want to keep Cole after seeing Chelsea's solid defence

Yup, a few weeks ago I was dead set on him being pretty much nailed on to my team for the long haul. Can't decide whether to stick to the plan (class is permanent, etc, etc.) or cut my losses. I made similar decisions at the same time last season and dumped Bale and Mata who were stinking my team out.

I want to see how Will.i.am fits in before deciding on my Chelsea attacker. The key player to get in a typical Mourinho formation is the old Deco role, just behind the striker but fluid and moving all across the final third. Oscar is that man at the moment, but Will.i.am can also do that.

The other key person in Mourinho world is the centre forward...if he can get Rooney or Eto then that will be the player to get.

Mourinho clearly sees Mata as a left footed right winger, but for some games prefers De Bruyne in that role. Hazard could improve FPL pts wise if Chelsea sign a striker as I think he will be a prime assister. Also as the season goes on Lampard will be rested more and he will be penalty taker.

Perhaps for now Oscar/new striker ....then Hazard for the second half of the season may be the best policy.

G - chelsea are playing for clean sheets not for goals. and if/when they score a goal or two they just try to defend the lead instead of going for more goals

Any chance Lamela might get classified as a midfield player?

There are a number of other forwards who play on the wing in 4-3-3 formations that have been put into that bracket.

His starting position is deep but he gets forward and is a danger from set pieces (corners etc) plus he's not afraid to shoot unlike his frustrating diminutive Spanish team mates.

City fans are slowly turning off him. Slow and complacent they say. I wouldn't have him anywhere near my team when there are much better options in the City line up.

is soldado over rated ? ...... 2 pens so far.

i like giroud till his form dips.

i am thinking of getting studge myself to go with giroud and dzeko.

dzeko i will hold because i have him but would b worried about game time if i had to get him in

Soldado haven't had many shots in his two games in the PL. But he's one of the best finishers in the game, is on pens and will be the point man for Spurs the entire season (if he manages to stay fit). If we buy Lamela, you can expect him to get more service too (and I think he'll get that regardless as our team gels).

I rate him to get more points than Sturridge this season.

my top three options are soldado sturridge and giroud, just cant help thinking giroud at 8.5m is better value than sturridge and soldado.

I have soldado so maybe i should keep for a while. Really then is whether to upgrade dzeko to sturridge or giroud.

    Good morning folks .........

I am very happy with my start, 30k, am looking for some suggestions before I end up doing somethin crazy..

Getting rid of Kagawa and possibly Coutinho but no mids sticking out.

    Team:
    Mignolet (Davis)
    Coleman, Collins, Mertesacker, (Turner), (Ivanovic).
    Wally, Silva, Coutinho, Kagawa (Britton)
    Giroud, Dzeko, Lambert

Need to get funds into forward line. Downgrade Kagawa first as he's looking deadweight. Then get Benteke. Also need Sturridge and/or Soldado and Coutinho could supply these funds if needed.

I was planning on using it after this GW to get RVP in, but now I'm not so sure. I just don't think he's worth it, especially as I'd be sceptical about captaining him every week. So, for now I'm holding off (which is a big change for me, the past two years I've used my WC early).

What do you guys think about getting Vidic in for GW4?

Utd's fixtures are very good from GW4-12 (except for City in GW5 and Arsenal in GW11).

Utd seem solid at the back and Vidic seems like the player that will get the maximum bonus when Utd keep a clean sheet.

    De Gea

    Dawson, Coleman, Mertz, Shaw

    Walcott, Kim, Snoddy, RavMo

    Dzeko, RVP

    Toure on the bench

if shaws injured and Ravmo stays on the bench again im down to 10

dont fancy another hit to sort them for more nailed on players.

But still, there are only 3 spots for Hazard, Oscar, Mata, Willian, KDB, Moses, Schurrle (Although I guess he can get minutes in the striker spot). There's just too uncertainty. If Mata stays, I'd assume he and Hazard will get significant minutes, and I don't think they just paid 30 million for Willian to ride the bench, although who knows.

I would go with Oscar or Michu. Oscar will have gone up in price by then. Michu has a higher ceiling, a solid fixture and is far less of a rotation risk.

To be honest, I'm not that keen on going with any Chelsea mids at the moment. What will happen when Mata is fit? What will happen with Willian? Gee, so many AMs in that team.
