The Weekend Team News

Wilfried Bony limps out of Swansea’s match against Valencia with a hamstring problem. Kieran Gibbs is back for Arsenal’s trip to Cardiff, Robert Huth and Marko Arnautovic will miss Stoke’s visit to Everton, Antonio Luna returns for Villa, whilst Mike Williamson is set to start for Newcastle’s home game with West Brom tomorrow evening. Here’s a quick round-up from yesterday’s press conferences:

Kieran Gibbs has recovered from the illness that forced him out of Arsenal’s midweek Champions League win over Marseille. Arsene Wenger was a little cryptic during yesterday’s press conference, however. The Gunners boss conceded that, while he has no injuries, he has “little concerns” ahead of the trip to Cardiff.

Antonio Luna is back in the Villa squad to face Sunderland tomorrow, Paul Lambert has confirmed. The Spaniard has missed the last three Gameweeks with a thigh problem and his return looks set to see Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker battle it out for a place alongside Ron Vlaar at centre-half. Lambert also revealed Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann “seem ok” after returning to action from the bench in Monday’s derby at West Brom.

Leighton Baines joins Arouna Kone and Darron Gibson on the sidelines for Everton’s home clash with Stoke. Aside from those three, Roberto Martinez expects everyone to be fit, despite a sickness bug affecting players’ ability to train this week. Martinez also revealed he has yet to decide on who will replace Baines and has been assessing his options in training, though conceded he is unlikely to rush Antolin Alcaraz back into the fold – the Paraguayan was handed a 45-minute run-out for the reserves earlier in the weeks after months out with a hamstring injury.

Gus Poyet has a number of issues at the back for Sunderland’s trip to Villa. Kieran Westwood remains a doubt, whilst there are also question marks over Andrea Dossena and Modibo Diakite – Carlos Cuellar is definitely out, though, having picked up a hip injury.

Marko Arnautovic and Robert Huth are both out of Stoke’s trip to Goodison. The Austrian is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury, whilst Huth requires monitoring after picking up a knee problem. Stephen Ireland is back in the squad, though, after missing last week’s win over Sunderland.

Alan Pardew has confirmed Mike Williamson is a definite starter for Newcastle’s home game with West Brom on Saturday evening. With Mathieu Debuchy set to retunr at right-back after a one-game suspension, Williamson (priced at 4.4 in the Fantasy Premier League) looks likely to be named in the XI for the seventh successive game – Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is set to drop to the bench, with Fabricio Coloccini partnering Williamson in the middle.

Swansea are sweating on the fitness of Wilfried Bony and Angel Rangel after both were forced off during last night’s Europa League loss to Valencia. Bony was withdrawn during the first half with a hamstring injury and, after the game, Michael Laudrup conceded his summer signing is set for scans, amid fears he could be sidelined for “several weeks”, whilst Rangel was forced off just before the final whistle with a calf complaint. Pablo Hernandez returned to action from a thigh injury, though, and will be available for Sunday’s trip to City.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold.

          Martin Olsson 4.2 😉

I don't really see the appeal in him though. Good fixture this week and then 2 rubbish ones.

Flanners appeals but Collins is nailed on & fixtures seem kind so wont have to rely in Hull & Cardiff for clean sheets. I was settled on Flanners yesterday. But now in 90% on collins

The key one is "Captain score as % of your highest possible captain score". This indicates how well you're choosing your captains. Mine's 54%, which is woeful, surely we should be aiming at 70%+

I'm the same, Burner is in the squad and has an appearance from time to time...gonna be forced into playing him this weekend though, some dreadful defensive fixtures.

I liked your analysis. The only things I disagree with are:

1.Arteta not being a good defensive mid. He is very good there.
      2. Ramsey more likely to be benched. Wilshere and Rosicky on the wings meant they did a lot of running and were visibly tired. Arteta came on and Ramsey pushed higher purely because we were seeing the game out with 3 defensive CM's.

Yeah, good points. Arteta would be fine as defensive mid against Cardiff, but I wouldn't necessarily trust him against the biggest and best.

As for Ramsey, I agree that he'll probably start but there is plenty of competition now with so many equally matched players in the Arsenal midfield. As a fan, who would you play?

Art eat was fantastic against BVB, and there's not many better.

          I'd play:

          Wojjy
          Bac per kos Gibbs
          Arteta rambo
          Wilshere ozil cazorla
          Giroud

Same team that was so good against Marseille, minus Rosicky who is better for controlling big games, but less effective than cazorla at opening doors. Give Walcott 30 mins after we have moved Carduff all over the gaff for an hour.

That team looks quite good enough to take Cardiff to the cleaners! I'm expecting defeat by a couple of goals.

My weekly look at the captaincy choices and their form against this week's opposition. For those struggling to pick a captain and who believe in bogey teams, etc. here are the popular captain choices with some key stats of their previous performances against this week's opposition. Note - Suarez vs Hull and Giroud vs Cardiff have never happened before hence their omission.

    This week's likely lads:

    Aguero vs Swansea
    Appearances - 4
    Goals - 2
    Assists - 1
    Yellow Cards - 0
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - Since announcing his arrival in English football in spectacular fashion with a brace off the bench against Swansea, Aguero has failed to trouble the scorers in three subsequent games. Indeed, Man City have notched only once in those three matches.

    Benteke vs Sunderland
    Appearances - 2
    Goals - 3
    Assists - 1
    Yellow Cards - 1
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - In his limited time in English football Benteke has scored only one hat trick - in this fixture last season.

    Lukaku vs Stoke
    Appearances - 2
    Goals - 0
    Assists - 0
    Yellow Cards - 0
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - No goals for the big Belgian in either appearance against Stoke last season. The absence of Huth this weekend is a plus but Huth was also missing when West Brom visited the Britannia last season and a Shawcross/Wilson centre back pairing kept him quiet...

    Rooney vs Tottenham
    Appearances - 14
    Goals - 7
    Assists - 2
    Yellow Cards - 6
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - As with most teams Rooney has faced more than a couple of times, he has a decent record against Spurs, although you have to go back to March 2012 for his last goal in this fixture.

    Van Persie vs Tottenham
    Appearances - 17
    Goals - 6
    Assists - 5
    Yellow Cards - 1
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - Not as striking a record as you might expect, although given that his first 7 appearances against Spurs were blanks it's not too shabby either

I've had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for this week's outrageous punts, here are a couple of extremely unlikely lads:

    Agbonlahor vs Sunderland
    Appearances - 12
    Goals - 2
    Assists - 3
    Yellow Cards - 2
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - A poor record overall, but he did manage returns in both games against Sunderland last season: the only goal in a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light and a goal and 2 assists in the return fixture. Just back from injury, could he trouble the Black Cats again?

    Ba vs Southampton
    Appearances - 3
    Goals - 3
    Assists - 0
    Yellow Cards - 0
    Red Cards - 0
Notes - Torres is favourite to start this weekend in the absence of Eto'o but Ba will fancy his chances if he gets the nod. Scoring 3 times in 2 games for Chelsea last season, his only blank against the Saints came in a miserable Newcastle performance where he was given no chance to shine.

Verdict on last week's highlighted players:

    Suarez vs Everton
Previous record: 4 games, 3 goals, 2 assists
Last week: 1 goal, 1 assist
Verdict: A great performance kept up an impressive record against Everton

    Aguero vs Tottenham
Previous record: 3 games, 2 goals
Last week: 2 goals, 1 assist
Verdict: A devastating performance above all expectations

    Giroud vs Southampton
Previous record: 2 games, 0 goals
    Last week: 2 goals
Verdict: On another day he would have kept up his miserable record against the Saints but Boruc and some timely substitutions gave Giroud owners some unexpected joy

Punt #1 - Nasri vs Tottenham
Previous record: 9 games, 6 goals, 5 assists
    Last week: Nothing, nada, zip
    Verdict: A crushing disappointment

Punt #2 - Lukaku vs Liverpool
Previous record: 5 games, 2 goals (2 in last 2 games)
    Last week: 2 goals
Verdict: A cheeky punt which would have been handsomely rewarded

As always, just a bit of fun, no need to point out that last week's form is more important than a game in 2006/07 😉

      What are your other options?

Mo has a great chance for pointage against Fulham who defend worse than if they had the two stevie's as CB's (Wonder and Hawking).

Rooney is in that purple patch of form that it doesn't matter who he plays he can deliver.

Ramsey may be the best option but I have a sneaky feeling he will score against Cardiff, one of those ones were a player returns to a club he played for and does some damage.
