The Weekend Team News

The injuries pile up for Southampton ahead of a home game with City. United and Swansea have selection problems up front for the visit of Newcastle and Hull respectively, Ron Vlaar is a concern as Villa roll up to Fulham, while Spurs sweat on Jan Vertonghen’s ankle problem for the trip to Sunderland:

Mauricio Pochettino has ruled out Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama of Southampton’s clash with City at St Mary’s – the latter has a hairline fracture of the leg and his manager is uncertain as to when he will return. The Saints boss has also revealed Jose Fonte is to be assessed after only being fit enough for a sub role in midweek, while Morgan Schneiderlin, Danny Fox and Guly Do Prado remain on the sidelines along with injured keepers Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis.

Fantasy managers were dealt a blow in midweek when Wayne Rooney picked up a fifth booking of the campaign, which sees him miss the visit of Newcastle this Saturday. David Moyes has also conceded he doesn’t yet know when Robin Van Persie will recover from the groin injury that has sidelined him for weeks, though has insisted the injury is “nothing desperately serious”.

Michael Laudrup has issues up front ahead of Monday’s visit of Hull. Alvaro Vazquez was forced off early in the first-half against Newcastle and his manager admitted post-match that the injury wasn’t bad and a return looks imminent. The Swans boss exercised caution when discussing Michu and Wilfried Bony’s progress from injury – the Spaniard has been training on his own and Laudrup confessed that he “could be back” for Monday but definitely won’t be match fit, going on to say it is too soon to decide whether either will be available for selection.

Ron Vlaar owners are facing a nervous wait to see whether he’ll be available to face Fulham. The Villa skipper was forced off in midweek against Southampton with a calf injury – his potential absence could force Paul Lambert to revert back to a four-man defence, having fielded a 3-5-2 at St Mary’s.

Andre Villas-Boas is eagerly awaiting scan results on the ankle problem picked up by Jan Vertonghen at Fulham on Wednesday. The Belgian rolled over on his ankle in midweek and his manager conceded the joint was “quite swollen” immediately after the 2-1 triumph. Kyle Naughton is on standby to deputise, though the Spurs boss has also revealed Danny Rose has now started training and may be back in a week or so. Villas-Boas has concerns over Mousa Dembele, who missed the trip to Fulham with a hip problem. The Belgian’s absence afforded Paulinho another stint in “the hole” during midweek, though Lewis Holtby may get the chance behind a lone striker after grabbing the midweek winner.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter stream for breaking news as Friday’s press conferences unfold and Fantasy managers prepare for the third Gameweek in the past seven days.

Good shout I think, he is the long-term starter and a threat. I'd always be cautious though while Spurs remain in the Europa as that guarantees rotation across the squad and there is also Kaboul if he can shake off his injuries.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

    The Community Team

Behind the scenes we've started getting some early discussions in on new article/feature ideas for next season. One that is gathering momentum is a community team. A bit like the the way Mark and Granville share their team in the podcast we'd set up a team where each week one lucky community member gets to be the manager.

The team's latest performance would be covered in the community round up...plus the community team gets a place in the FFScout Mods and Contribs league.

Just canvassing you all to see if its an idea you'd like. Also feel free to suggest ways we choose the lucky/unlucky 38 managers. Ideally it'd be something where community involvement is rewarded.

To keep the password secure the manager of the week would liaise with one of the contrib/mod team each week to go over transfer values and tell them who to dump and who to bring in.

A community team where there is a Poll that decides on changes......

First 3 days of week for example people suggest changes (leave/save, A to B or A and B to C and D), then the most popular ideas are put in a poll and we all vote.

Really would be THE PEOPLES TEAM then......

      DO it... do BOTH

I really like that idea....but. The only problem is that we set up the poll, have some suggestions and then come Friday afternoon, injuries mean all are null and void so we have to come up with another option. I can see it being fraught logistically...but in principle I love that idea.

It would be a bit like the Ebbsfleet situation where the fans vote on transfers and changes as they own the club. We can make it work, just put up the options a day before and then we frantically vote in a 12 hour period say.

And Marshall - not going to complain though 🙂

Benteke has been my biggest mistake so far this season. Had a choice of who to replace Sturridge with when he got injured a couple of weeks ago. Reduced it to Rooney (away to Spurs and about to get banned), Lukaku (tough short term fixtures), Negredo (not nailed on) and Benteke.

Chose Benteke then saw him blank and get dropped whilst all the others scored that week. Frightful.

I've done the same as you and ditched him this week though.

                1, 0, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1

10 points in 7 weeks, Suarez had nearly double that at half time!

I think they would need to have some history with the site, not just turn up in July and put their name forward only to be nowhere around in GW5 when they'd got bored because they weren't winning.

With that in mind maybe half a dozen emergency sub managers willing to step in if required?

There could be a community poll at the start of the week of all the managers who've thrown their hat into the ring. Winner of the poll gets control of the team for the week.

      I'm very democratic 🙂

Would it not be easier to just set up a league where 2/3 posters have a team that they manage over the season. Teams with Highest GW score, monthly score etc could be covered then in the community round up. Recruitment and building the squad will add a bit to pre season too.

There are lots of community groups that already do pair leagues and do a great job on them. FFS's Euro one was particularly good.

I'd love to see this run as an experiment to see if the wisdom of crowds is greater than that of individuals.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wisdom_of_Crowds

If it was just 38 managers it wouldn't be so interesting for those of us not involved. Just as the Scoutcast team is a waste of time currently.

Given price changes, it might be hard to run this through the week, so perhaps a one day window on the Thurs or Fri. Give us drop downs for player out & player in. Choosing whether to make multiple transfers might be a hard problem to solve though.

I think its a bad idea to have people managing more than one team I doubt people would be happy if they thought there was one rule for FFS and another rule for everyone else. Wasn't a team kicked out recently that was doing pretty well for being a multiple?

Why not have two community teams in your league? One decided by Community Poll brainstorming, and the other by allowing a different community member to manage it each game-week.

The 38 managers of the latter could be selected by random choices from the paid-up membership list. And perhaps they should be contacted shortly before their game-week to check that they are still active and willing to do it.

No need for them to know the password - they could just pass their instructions to a member of the mods & contributors team to make the changes for them. They might need to continue communicating though the game-week as they decided which transfers to make and when, which players to bench, and which to be captain and vice-captain. Hope you don't get someone who leaves their final decisions to the last few minutes before the deadline, or keeps changing their mind every five minutes.

There is perhaps a risk that one of these manager might destroy the squad with ridiculous changes, so perhaps the mods & contributors should reserve a right of veto against anything too ridiculous, such as bringing in 15 hopeless players with their wildcard or taking an excessive number of hits when a wildcard is not available.

I would be very surprised if one of the early managers does not decide to play the main wildcard. The first manager in January will also probably be the only one to have the opportunity of playing the January Wildcard.

Perhaps the manager of the week should communicate their ideas through a hot topic, rather than by contacting the mods & contributors team privately?

I like many of your suggestions. I think the wildcards should be settled by polls, like maybe "Smarty Pants" or someone could code a quick program to work out the most popular team based on submissions from the community in a specific format and layout......

re your comments about the squad being destroyed.....I'm sure certain restrictions would be put in place, like no 8pt hits.

      ***Toffs and Proles***

Two or three years ago, when the FFS membership scheme was first introduced, there used to be a Toffs and Proles League which pitted members against non-members. Perhaps we could have separate Toffs and Proles teams in your Mods and Contribs League.

Also, since the FFS UEFA Council have become an influential power-block within the FFS community, perhaps they could be allowed to enter a combined team too.

And there could also be a team representing all the mods and contributors (not just Mark and Granville). Changes to this team could be decided at the same time as the Scout Picks are selected.

But I wouldn't be at all surprised if Evs' team finished above all these combined teams!

I have Jagielka with me and he's been top notch so for, but I'm thinking of benching him against arsenal and using Gabbidon (vs cardiff) instead.

I'll keep Evra as an option. What about Ben Davies of Swansea? He's a back in the team and could "possibly" get a few CS against Hull and Norwich.
