Moving Target

Moving Target – Robert Snodgrass

Having snapped up Jake Livermore from Tottenham last month, Steve Bruce continued to strengthen Hull City’s midfield by acquiring Robert Snodgrass from Norwich City. The 26-year-old arrives at the KC Stadium on a three-year contract in a deal believed to be in the region of £7m and makes his way back to the Premier League less than two months after dropping down into the Championship with the relegated Canaries:

Talking to the Hull official website upon completion of the deal, the Scot was clearly relieved to be handed a second opportunity in the English top-flight as the Tigers attempt to improve upon last term’s 16th place finish:

“After speaking to the owners and the manager, I was desperate to come here. I’m ready for a new chapter and I’m delighted that it’s going to come with Hull City. Having had two years of playing in the Premier League, it is where I want to be. Every player will tell you that they want to play in the top flight and I’m delighted that I can continue to do that.”

The History

Born and bred in Glasgow, Snodgrass displayed a single-mindedness as a youngster by turning down an apprenticeship at boyhood club Celtic and a trial with Barcelona to sign for Livingston instead. Handed his debut in 2004-05, he proceeded to score six goals in 42 appearances over two Scottish Premier League seasons before his club were relegated to Division One. Snodgrass played six times before picking up a metatarsal injury and, upon recovering, dropped down a division to help his rehabilitation, notching on five occasions in 12 games for Stirling Albion.

The following season saw the Scot establish himself as a key player for Livingston and, after netting nine times in 31 matches, was snapped up by Leeds ahead of 2008-09. In his first two seasons at Elland Club, Snodgrass’ impact helped the club climb out of League One into the Championship by serving up 16 goals and 12 assists in 86 appearances. Having delivered six goals and eight assists in his first year in the Championship, Snodgrass stepped up another level and delivered 13 goals and 15 assists in 43 appearances over 2011-12, winning the Player of the Year awards from both his team-mates and the club’s fans.

With many Premier League suitors circling, Snodgrass opted to sign for Norwich in July 2012.The Scot made his way onto Fantasy managers’ radars after serving up six goals and eight assists in his first season in the English top-flight but a total of six strikes and two assists in 2013-14 wasn’t enough to prevent the Canaries from dropping into the Championship. At international level, Snodgrass made his debut for Scotland back in 2011 and has gone on to fire three goals in 16 appearances.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt Snodgrass’ arrival will give Bruce’s side a much-needed boost in creativity for the season ahead, both domestically and in the Europa League. Hull scored just 38 times in 2013-14 – the fourth worst record in the Premier League – and their manager will be more than aware that, if they are to avoid the drop this time around, improvements in the final third are essential.

Although Snodgrass mustered just two assists last term, the stats show that his frequency of key passes actually quickened in his second year with Norwich. In 2012/13, he managed 66 key passes from 3,182 minutes – an average of 48.2 minutes per chance created – compared to 67 key passes (the same number as Steven Gerrard, for example) over 2,704 minutes last term, or an average of 40.4 minutes. Given that Tom Huddlestone was the most impressive Hull midfielder with an average of 56.8 minutes per key pass, it’s obvious that Snodgrass’ installation is clearly a step in the right direction and could turn out to be a masterstroke as Bruce looks to provide more ammunition for front two Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic.

Likely to be handed a major share of corners and set-pieces, the Scot’s dead-ball ability could bring him back onto our Fantasy radars – providing he remains reasonably priced across the Fantasy games. A of 6cost.2 in the recently-released Sky Sports game certainly bodes well for Fantasy managers looking to invest in the former Norwich playmaker and if he comes in around the 6.0 or 6.5 mark in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his underlying stats certainly indicate he’s likely to prove the best route into Bruce’s midfield.

In terms of position, Snodgrass offers the Tigers options right across the attacking midfield areas. A reprisal of his right wing role for Leeds and Norwich could be on the cards and with a fit-again Robbie Brady on the opposite flank, Bruce’s options out wide will take a turn for the better. Tactically, the Hull boss rolled out a three-man backline on a number of occasions last term, with Ahmed Elmohamady as right wing-back, but the Egyptian is perhaps more likely to be utilised as a right-back in a four-man defence in order to accommodate Snodgrass further up the pitch.

After mustering just one win and a single draw across the last eight league fixtures of 2013/14, the release of next term’s Premier League fixture list affords Bruce’s side reason for early optimism. Over the first five Gameweeks of the new campaign, Hull square up to QPR, Stoke, Villa, West Ham and Newcastle – a run of matches which could allow the Tigers the chance of a quick start and, if his new team-mates can tuck away the numerous opportunities he will surely provide, bring Snodgrass back into our Fantasy plans once again.

    Community Article of the Month

Each month we offer a £20 Amazon voucher to the author of the most popular community article of the month.

To take part in the vote simple say the name of the author and the article (or series of articles from the same author on the same theme) in this hot topic. I’ll keep coming back to this over the week and by Friday will tot up the mentions and announce a winner in the weekend’s Community Round Up.

Here is a full list of our articles – remember it is only those published in June that are eligible.

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/category/community-submissions/

Among some of the most talked about posts so far have been Balotellis Bib’s lessons learnt series for each round in the World Cup.

Daniel Levy’s Official FIFA game guides to the best budget options have also been much discussed.

Portsmouth Bubblejet’s look at Premier League Home and Away rotation was another popular article as was OneKeano’s group by group previews earlier in the month.

Bonz, Aaron Ramessi and Asquishy Potato’s World Cup articles were also excellent reads.

It’s worth having a good look at the beginning of the month as well to be sure to take into account World Cup preparation articles by Demi, Saniul, Sarjeant and Home Run Baker among others.

There has been many more as well.

Good luck to all those who sent in articles.

Southampton having a "L" of a time in the transfer window.
Lambert, Lala, Luke, and Lovren all gone or looking to go. What happened? I thought Saints were looking as if they might well challenge for Europa place this season.

Is there something other than money that drives a group of players to abandon a decent team with good prospects, where they have for the most part made their name and reputation?

lets face it, £30m for a left back, when you've got Clyne and Chambers who can cover anyway is bloody good business when Southampton don't have title ambitions (regardless of their squad and it's potential)

The question should be asked about the club rather than the individuals.

Mainly money. At least Lambert actually supports them.
It's also a case of the domino affect, they all see players leaving and follow suit not wanting to be left on the sinking ship.

        I disagree.

It's not only about money when you move to a club with rich heritage AND title ambitions. This is about living the dream, fulfilling your potential, performing on the biggest stages and winning titles.

Lallana is from Bournemouth, Shaw is from London, not that it makes a difference. The players have outgrown the CLUB's ambition.

Well this is it, nobody other than the players themselves will ever know the real answer. I just know that personally myself I'd be straight off for the money. Anything else in a bonus.

really. hypothetically would you not get to a point in your career where you have enough money and you make your moves based on trophies/success?

lets say you were Asamoah Gyan, would you swan off to the middle east for $ or go for a bit less $ but the opportunity to win things at the highest level

Well there's things I'd take into consideration. Such as I would never move abroad no matter how much money was offered. Though if I were young with no family commitments that might be different.

You're probably right about getting to a point where you feel you've got enough money so can base decisions on success alone. Though the 2 usually go hand in hand anyway domestically. On the other hand I've seen how greedy people sometimes get the richer they become, which is why you get these millionaires getting caught up in things like tax evasion even though they really don't need to get into any of that.

but you haven't grown up dreaming of playing for England at a World Cup or winning the Champions League final and invested thousands and thousands of hours in training to have a chance of achieving that.

The money is fantastic, but that isn't what these kids were motivated by when they committed to the sport as a profession. Eventually it seems to take precedent with most players, but i think its a bit early to hold the cynical view when they have just broken into the national team and made moves to the two biggest clubs in FA history.

They went for the game, until performances indicate otherwise.

People said the same of Ashley Cole, and maybe it was true to an extent, but nobody could ever argue his on-field commitment and the successes he achieved. When you achieve your potential, the point of motivation is irrelevant.

I think the 'good prospects' become 'great prospects' when you move to Liverpool or Manchester United.

If they were off to QPR, i'd agree that money is the reason and question the integrity of the game but i think these guys can be forgiven for chasing the dream.

Ultimately, the club has allowed these players to go. They've also seen the manager go. The question of footballing success vs financial success ought to be directed at them first.

Does anybody know if there will be a pre-season scoutcast? A week before the season kicks off maybe...

Scoutcast is always an excellent listen... Could have guest appearances to discuss their plans for up coming season, looking at their draft teams etc...

I have 3 clean sheets on the bench and a Fernandez and Gago (along with other disgraceful scores) on the pitch.

They had a similar start to the campaign last year and did ok. Beat Arsenal and unlucky against Chelsea. Granted Benteke did play but Villa are an odd team when it comes to fixtures. Usually get 1 player for their better looking fixtures and end up with little returns!

Definitely weren't much better, only able to exploit Wilshere-Ramsey disaster-duo in lower midfield. But to talk about lucky win v. unlucky not to hammer the opponent, let's see how close it was of Villa winning by more than what they did and Arsenal tying it up.

Villa's only chances they did not score were the penalty of which they scored the rebound, and the 40 yards effort when Szcescny was roaming. There was zero chance for a hammering there. Add to that that two of three goals they actually scored were penalties (one of them invalid by the rules) and the third one they scored when Arsenal was all out in attack in the end to tie it up, being one down for a red card from challenge without contact.

How close were they not to win it then? Arsenal had Rosicky and Cazorla each one on one against Guzan before Villa made it 3-1 on break. Cazorla's shot was even deflected to woodwork. Had one of those been scored, it would have been 2-2. That's how close it really was.

Indeed. Just said unlucky against Chelsea as I remember watching the game and thought that. They also beat city in that opening run I think. Just highlighting that although they have horrendous fixtures, they do often spring a surprise

Yeah, of course there are surprises. I didn't watch the Chelsea match, and don't know if they were unlucky there. And Villa ain't really so bad a team as they often are represented. If they don't have Benteke, I will avoid them regardless of fixtures, though, and with these fixtures probably even with Benteke. Or maybe I'd just have Benteke as top teams often are favourable opponents to lone strikers of small clubs, playing high line that the low table opponent can exploit. And Benteke should be one of the better strikers in the league.

Feeling very much in the minority of Saints fans that think we have done good business so far this summer...

Lambert, Lallana and Shaw all good business. You could argue Koeman is one of our best incoming managers in terms of his reputation.

I accept if Lovren and Schneiderlin go then the spine of a great side has been ripped out but if players want to leave then our hands are tied.

We probably do lack ambition, but until the culture of the big boys stealing from the little fish stops then fans should just appreciate being in the EPL.

If we reinvest the transfer fees wisely there's no reason we can't replicate last season.

          I agree with you.

For Southampton to push on and compete with the CL sides they'd need to invest £100m or more and that comes with no guarantees.

the players are ambitious and want to see that matched so you either do like Villa did and break the bank to grow the squad (which crippled us for years) - and if it fails you lose the leverage to get top dollar for your players - or you continue to sell and reinvest.

Saints can maintain good quality football, top half prospects and safeguard the long term future of the club by doing business like this. They have a bright manager, promising young players and a lot of money to spend.

To keep these players, hike their whole wage structure and spend millions on squad assets in such a highly competitive race is a risky strategy and i can't see it paying off.
