Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Welbeck at the Double

Danny Welbeck scores twice as England sweep aside Slovenia. Roy Hodgson’s is optimistic on Phil Jagielka’s leg problem. Everton deliver some positive news on Leighton Baines’ hamstring. Mario Balotelli picks up a groin injury in training for Italy, whilst Mathieu Debuchy edges towards his Arsenal comeback.

Welbeck Bags a Brace

Handed a role up front alongside Wayne Rooney, the Arsenal striker cast aside his indifferent league form to score twice in a 3-1 win over Slovenia. Rooney’s spot-kick duties helped him get amongst the goals, whilst Raheem Sterling earned an assist for Roy Hodgson’s side.

The Scout Says: With Olivier Giroud returning to training for the Gunners, Welbeck will need to carry that form into the Gameweek 12 clash against former club United to stave off the challenge from the Frenchman. He has now scored 10 goals in 17 starts in all competitions this season – sadly for Arsenal and his Fantasy owners, only two of Welbeck’s goals have arrived in the Premier League from nine starts. Given that Arsene Wenger has recently rolled out a 4-4-2, Giroud’s physical presence certainly offers an alternative alongside the free-scoring Sanchez, and with the Gunners boss previously hailing Welbeck’s versatility, a possible shift out wide in the future would force his 16% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) owners to think twice over retaining his services. The Gameweek 12 clash with United looks vital for Welbeck’s FPL ownership.

Balotelli Out of Italy Squad

The Liverpool striker has been ruled out of international duties after picking up groin and hamstring problems during training with Italy. The Italian FA confirmed Balotelli’s omission was more a precautionary measure, suggesting the issue isn’t overly concerning ahead of the Reds’ trip to Palace next weekend.

The Scout Says: These concerns surrounding Balotelli’s fitness are more than countered by the potential return of Daniel Sturridge. The England striker has stepped up his recovery and could be set to strengthen his manager’s options for the Selhurst Park encounter in Gameweek 12. Sturridge and Balotelli have only played once together – in Liverpool’s most impressive performance of the season back in Gameweek 3 away to Spurs – before injury curtailed the former’s season. Given that Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini have both started just one league match apiece this term – even in Sturridge’s absence – it may well be that if Balotelli is out, Rodgers will continue with a lone striker system until the Italian is fit and available. Such a scenario could continue to frustrate Raheem Sterling owners, then – the youngster seems best suited to the role in “the hole” behind a front two but has had little opportunity to display his talents in a central role thus far.

Baines Concerns Lessen

Fears over a possible period of absence for the Everton left-back look to have eased after scans revealed the hamstring problem sustained during England training isn’t as bad as first reported. Indeed, the Toffees offered some encouraging news via a statement on their official website:

“He returned to Finch Farm for an assessment which has since showed that he has sustained a ‘grade one’ hamstring injury – the least significant on the scale of such injuries. Baines will continue to be monitored by Everton’s medical team and, although he remains a doubt for next Saturday, he has not yet been ruled out of the game against Sam Allardyce’s Hammers.”

The Scout Says: Positive news for Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike, then, and given Baines’ injury history, we’ll be expecting a quick return to action. The left-back has only missed 12 league matches over the previous five seasons, though the addition of European matches is clearly extending him this term – Baines is one of only four outfield players to have started all four of Everton’s Europa League matches thus far. As we discussed yesterday, Baines is the second most popular defender in FPL after serving up a goal or assist in seven of the last nine, and such a level of consistency will surely persuade his owners to hold if the worst-case scenario turns out to be a return in Gameweek 13.

Hodgson Hopeful on Jagielka

The England manager confirmed that Everton’s centre-half was forced off with a dead leg towards the end of last night’s win but is optimistic Jagielka will be available to face Scotland on Tuesday.

The Scout Says: Bearing in mind that both John Stones and Antolin Alcaraz are injured for the Toffees, a stint on the sidelines for Jagielka would leave Sylvain Distin as the only experienced centre-half available. Jagielka has played every minute of the season so far and has already netted twice – despite being overshadowed by Baines, he currently sits on 48 points in the FPL game, level with Branislav Ivanovic. With Hodgson’s words allaying concerns, though, a quick return to action means Jagielka may yet appear on some radars ahead of clashes with West Ham, Spurs, Hull and QPR in the next five.

Schneiderlin Worry for Saints

The Southampton midfielder has been ruled out of France’s friendly against Sweden on Tuesday evening after undergoing scans on his right adductor. Schneiderlin, who was afforded 10 minutes as a late sub during Friday’s draw with Albania, will now return to St Mary’s for further assessment ahead of the weekend trip to Villa.

The Scout Says: Schneiderlin has played every minute of the season so far for Ronald Koeman’s side so a potential absence would be a bitter blow for the Saints. Whilst a total of three goals and an assist has persuaded 17% of FPL managers to snap up his services, the Frenchman’s industrious displays in front of the back-four have also played a major part in delivering seven clean sheets in the opening 11 Gameweeks. With the Saints set to face City, Arsenal, United and Everton in four of the five fixtures directly after their Villa Park visit, an absence for Schneiderlin would place further questions over his side’s ability to retain their resilience over that testing schedule.

Diouf Fires Senegal Into Finals

Stoke striker Mame Biram Diouf headed Senegal into January’s African Cup of Nations by grabbing the match-winner in a 1-0 victory over Algeria yesterday. Southampton’s Sadio Mane and West Ham midfielder enforcer Cheikhou Kouyate also started and, along with Papiss Cisse and Diafra Sakho, are amongst those who’ll be missing from domestic duties in a couple of months’ time.

The Scout Says: The tournament takes place from January 17 until February 8, or Gameweeks 22-24 to you and I. Depending on their nation’s progress, the likes of Sakho, Kouyate and Mane could potentially miss Gameweek 25, when West Ham and Southampton go head-to-head on February 10. Certainly, Sakho’s absence would likely have the biggest impact from a Fantasy perspective, though the tournament also comes at a time where the fixture list stiffens for West Ham – Sam Allardyce’s side face Liverpool, United, Southampton, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal between Gameweek 23 and 29, suggesting many will be keen to part company during that spell..

Debuchy Nears Gunners Comeback

The Arsenal right-back has confirmed he could be back in action next month as he steps up his recovery from an ankle injury. Speaking to the club’s official website, Debuchy went on to say:

“My injury is now better. I work hard every day with the physio and I want to be back on the pitch in December. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Scout Says: A return to action would immediately place question marks over Calum Chambers’ pitch time at right-back, bearing in mind Debuchy started the first four Gameweeks before succumbing to injury. Now down to 5.2 in FPL, the Frenchman seems likely to reclaim his starting berth on the right, then, though the continued absence of Laurent Koscielny could allow the versatile Chambers to partner Per Mertesacker in the centre of the back-four until the injuries finally clear. As we saw in Gameweeks 3 and 4, though, the 17%-owned Chambers may face a tough task to retain his role once Wenger has a full quota of defenders to choose from, though it remains to be seen just how quickly Koscielny can recover from an ongoing Achilles complaint that has now kept him on the sidelines for the last four Gameweeks.

Hasn't Costa been playing with the injury Baines has all season? And Baines is at least as much of a man as Costa.

Planning to do following transfers over next 3 gwks, the question being, when do I do which?

    Ivan > azpi
    Kaboul > Hutton
    Clyne > Coleman
    Wanyama > siggy
    Pelle > Austin
    Begovic > Fabianski

I'd honestly say it's not worth planning this far ahead. It's good that you have a clear idea of the players you want but try to take it week-by-week because injuries/suspensions scupper most of these well-laid plans.

Out of those though, this week I'd do Wanyama > Siggy

I know, but these are all players I need to get rid off. That doesn't mean the ones I buy will defo be these, its just these are the players I'd like to buy.

Also, I think I forgot to mention I have 0.1 itb

I was thinking the kaboul and Ivan trades might be best this week?

Ivan > Azpi is just a waste of a transfer imo.

Hutton is a major doubt so know point bringing him in.

Wanyama gas scored a couple recently bug he's not really a FPL points magnet. Better to get Siggy in now with a good run of fixtures coming up.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Festive planning

The Christmas articles have started http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/11/14/fantasy-ghosts-of-christmas-past-present-and-future/

The festive TV advertising is in full swing

And I even know someone who has put their Christmas tree up already.

It may be mid November but how are you looking to plan ahead for the congested festive fixtures? Is tidying up your bench more of a priority than you think? What of rotation? Which fixtures are likely to see the most line up surprises?

    1. BigManBakar

I would like to tidy my bench but the lack of Hazard/Costa in my team coupled with the fact that I have 3 Saints already is making it difficult

      1. Fantasy Gold
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 5 months ago

        Ditto TFF.

There are much bigger priorities lying in store than tidying up my bench sadly.

I think I'll be getting rid of any players with fitness doubts over the Xmas period (barring Costa).

Imo not much changes, pick the best players based on form and fixtures and keep your fingers crossed 🙂

          • 10 Years
          9 years, 5 months ago

My bench is woeful. I'll definitely be sorting it with the spare cash from downgrading Pelle. I think you need at least 2 of the 3 to be safe, really. Funny things happen at Christmas! 😛

I suppose the only things you can do to plan are

      (a) have a fully playing bench, and

      (b) avoid players who are prone to being rested and rotated

The problem with (b) is that these often tend to be the most explosive FPL players such as Aguero and Costa

and that's why (b) is the 'magic' of christmas ,when there's a chance for old lgging behinders like me to do some catching up....

      2. MJ6987
        • 13 Years

        I thought of another one

        (c) Try to keep a saved transfer rolling over till it looks like you need it

        Also tough to do though

        1. CABAYE4
          • 12 Years

And it's rare that you know someone will be rested before the deadline.

Nothing worse than preemptively taking out a big hitter and them scoring well.

It would be more to be able to replace players who are injured or dropped, maintaining a full playing squad of 15 (or 14 if you have one playing keeper)

              • 12 Years

Yep, transfers should be saved on removing players who definitely won't play.

I would like to clean my bench but few spots in starting XI still need to be sorted. Will try to turn my bench stronger in next couple of gameweeks.
Dont have many rotation-prone players, so should be fine hopefully...

If I had a look at Christmas rotation, what would people find most useful?

Currently planning number of players rotated between fixtures.... i.e. looking at teams, not individuals.

      Any suggestions?

Players like Aguero/Sterling will be susceptible to it.

In Aguero's form though, it would be crazy to get rid

Disagree on Aguero, he tends to play if fit.

He then just breaks down and gets injured.

This is true. I researched it yesterday. Played in every game last year (though was taken off around the 70th minute in most) up until he got injured.

Interestingly, Kompany played every minute of every game. Considering their fixtures from GW16 onwards he might be worth having until the New Year provided his calf isn't playing up

Follow up question. In previous years, which of the big hitters have been rested, and which were played throughout the Christmas period?

Key players I'm thinking about, who we can judge from past experience, are:

      Aguero
      Silva
      Oscar
      Hazard
      Sterling
      Sturridge
      Downing

      Sanchez (any view!?)

If our big-hitters get rested, the likes of Boyd and Yun get awkwardly thrust into the spotlight. Not ideal, so where possible it's good to stock up on big-hitters who are less likely to be rotated over the period.

Doesn't make sense to second-guess who will play every game and who will get rested. If you have Aguero Costa Di Maria Hazard Baines Fabregas Sanchez, transferring any of them out and then back in again in January just seems a waste.

This is the first season I've really thought about the whole squad for the Christmas period and thankfully having kept the wildcard till this week I've been able to get a decent squad. Downgraded pelle to austin which along with all the other changes I've made enabled me to have three midpriced midfielders in downing siggy and chadli instead of two and boyd. Appreciate that some points will end up benched but I now have 8 first team good points scoring forwards/midfielders to cover any rotation.

That can be a pain, I had similar and ended up just buying Boyd instead. In my view the money is better spent on an upgrade to a player you will play every week.

I'm going to roll with 8 forwards and rotate Austin/Downing/Siggy to keep good attacking cover, and have 5 playing defenders who rotate well but almost always have a good 'spare' fixture in any Gw to cover for injuries or rotation. Strength in numbers works if you get Siggy, Downing, Oscar, sterling.

My biggest (and only) worry is not having Costa, but hopefully he gets that YC or a timely red even 🙂

That's what ive managed but including costa aguero baines and sanchez. The only compromise is oscar over cesc or hazard but with clyne going to make way soin enough for a cheaper alternative there might be a chance to uograde if oscars form drops off.

Yeah when costa starts hittin form and scoring goals the plans above will be wiped off in no time.

Anyway its only gw12..isit worth to invest so much money on bench yet for the potential rotation? Its okie if u feel costa will not score more pts than your other strikers. But if u think costa is going to score well then i would recommend u to get him

Always saw people mention about the importance of a fit bench. But to be realistic most of the time ur bench only return u a 2pt-er when u need them. As we all have experience b4 our bench gets points when we least need them and a solid 2pt when we need them most.

Does not really warrant that much attention for me. At least i would not worry if there is a non-playing/injuried guy in my team

Captain players who are playing at different ends of the country to limit chance of weather impacting and postponing games.

Avoid 3 players from same team for same reason.

      Have two playing goalies.

      Sort out my bench.

      Avoid rotation prima donnas.

Yep, spotted it. 🙂 It's hard to be particularly precise, as I'm not going back to look at injuries etc. It's all just a spreadsheet from Turd's stats. But it'll give an idea. 🙂

Just done Arsenal. Walcott was the only midfielder who played all 4 festive fixtures. (i.e. Ramsey, Wilshere, Ozil, Rosicky, Cazorla, Flamini, Arteta didn't)

Cheers! Walcott should be fully fit by then so hoping that happens again, can't see any reason to rotate Sanchez out (best player by a margin). May need to get rid of Chambers though.

            9 years, 5 months ago

From memory, yes. But to look at all teams, I cant really try and work out if it was injuries. I've just got the stats.

And as I said to MJ above, the fact they were injured is relevant really.

Regardless of all that, only 1 Arsenal mid played all 4. I'd say that's significant.

Had a look through Chelsea for December period.

Hazard played every game, most for 90 minutes. There was a lot of switching in central midfield and up top though, presumably as those guys do a lot of running.

At the back Terry played every game whilst both Cahill and Azpi were rested a couple of times each prior to big games. Ivan started every game he was available for (he was injured in GW19 v Liverpool and went off in the 1st half then missed the following game v Southampton on New Years Day)

    Grade 1 Hamstring Strain:
With a grade 1 hamstring strain you may have tightness in back of the thigh but will be able to walk normally. You will be aware of some hamstring discomfort and unable to run at full speed. There will be mild swelling and spasm. Bend your knee against resistance is unlikely to reproduce much pain.

    @Davies:

Do you reckon Moore can play as right back if he is unable to win back the centre back position this weekend? If I remeber correctly, Richie De Laet was subbed for him in the second half becauae he was having a really poor game against Mane

Moore is capable of performing at RB, yes. However, you might be forgetting that we've got Simpson as back-up - who, of course, wasn't on the bench vs Southampton. So, the likelihood of Moore playing RB is slim, imo. He'll get his CB spot back soon enough, however when that occurs is anyone's guess, unfortunately. Reading Nigel Pearson's mind is near impossible.

Also, iirc, De Laet was brought off due to injury, but it was only precautionary and is available for Sunderland.

I know, it's very strange but before this series, Misbah was not too popular in the public (despite him being our highest run getter in 2013). Whereas Afridi is worshipped like an idol despite the fact that he plays for himself and not the team 😉

If I had that team, I'd do Fab > Hazard

I wouldn't be selling your Southampton defence for Villa.

Hutton is back next GW at worst, and he gas decent upcoming fixtures

Hazard has more of an upside, on pens, Fab on 4 YCs

          I'm not underrating them.

They are low on confidence, struggling to score, fans are straying to turn on Lambert and Vlaar/Senderos and Hutton are all doubts.

If their defence is depleted, I really can't see them scoring.

A solid defence is the only way they'll be able to counter Southampton's style effectively

      Save, then deal with 1.

Hutton should be back very soon, Moore isn't a priority. Fabs has good fixtures, doesn't become a problem until he gets booked, which may be just before a league cup game anyway.

Was planning on doing Clyne to Azpiliceuta and a 4m to Reid.

      Hutton will be back surely?

Fabregas - worry about the suspension when it happens

Soton defence - could wait one game I guess, although Villa won't be the cakewalk many on here seem to be thinking

      That leaves Moore....

      Moore > ???

I was thinking of Moore to Yun, Clyne to Azpi, Hutton to Reid. In the coming weeks.

next week you can do either Forster --> Fabianski or Clyne --> Williams / Naylor (4 yellows).

      We were a shambles.

Fair play for taking advantage of Clattenburg's crapness though

Still a great game for the neutral. So many twists and turns to the game. 3-1 up etc.

Just finished reading the article and come up with these wishful thinking.

    > Hope Welbeck proves himself with a brace at OT this weekend.

    > Schneiderlin would be another reason for losing some Saints early.

    > And.. Wish Chambers rise another 0.1m before losing his place to Debuchy.

Welbeck won't score at OT this weekend. I can promise you that.

It'll be hard for Welbeck to score at OT considering it's at the Emirates
