Scout Scribbles – Saints and Spurs March On

Shane Long fires Southampton past Ipswich in the cup but the win comes at a cost, as the injuries rack up for Ronald Koeman. Tottenham get the better of Burnley in a six-goal thriller at the Lane, with a number of fringe players on the scorehseet for both sides, whilst Robin van Persie looks poised to miss United’s trip to QPR due to an ankle injury.

INJURIES MOUNT IN SAINTS WIN

Ronald Koeman fielded a 3-5-2 formation for Southampton’s FA Cup third round replay with Ipswich last night, making five changes to his starting line-up in the process. Nathaniel Clyne was deployed as a right wing-back, with Ryan Bertrand alongside Florin Gardos and Jose Fonte in the back three, whilst youngsters Matt Targett and Harrison Reed were afforded starts. Shane Long put his side ahead early on with an instinctive strike, and the Saints held on for their second 1-0 victory in the space of four days to book their spot in the fourth round.

However, last night’s win came at a price; Victor Wanyama was forced off at half time after suffering a hamstring problem, whilst Dusan Tadic was also withdrawn due to a hip complaint. Post-match, Koeman was seemingly pessimistic over Wanyama’s situation:

“I already spoke before the game with Victor and Steven Davis as I had made the decision to give both players 45 minutes. Then 12 seconds before half-time, he got his hamstring injury and, okay, you know if it is really a hamstring injury then he will be out for four or five weeks.”

Morgan Schneiderlin missed out entirely with an adductor injury, and Koeman confirmed that the midfielder could miss up to a month with the problem:

“Schneiderlin has a little bit the same as he had when he came back from the French national team. It is an adductor problem in his right leg and he will be out for three or four weeks, like Toby Alderweireld, but, okay, we have a lot of young players.”

The Scout Says: Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, the Saints’ injury problems are beginning to mount just as we start to wield our winter wildcards. With Alderweireld missing from their rearguard and Wanyama looking very likely to join Schneiderlin on the sidelines, managers may begin to question whether Southampton can continue to deliver the sort of defensive returns that have made their backline assets such popular picks in recent times. Their fixtures are certainly enticing (new, SWA, qpr, WHM), but injuries to important players in key areas will certainly dent their prospects and Koeman will be more reliant than ever on Graziano Pelle finding his form if the St Mary’s outfit are to retain their top three ambitions.

SPURS RALLY TO COMEBACK VICTORY

Mauricio Pochettino made seven changes to his Spurs starting XI for their FA Cup replay with Burnley. Jan Vertonghen, Benjamin Stambouli, Andros Townsend and Danny Rose were the quartet to keep their places, with the latter fielded as a left-winger, whilst Roberto Soldado replaced Harry Kane up front. Despite falling behind to two early goals, Spurs rallied back through goals from Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Vlad Chiriches and Rose to progress to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: The north Londoners’ fringe players certainly staked a claim with last night’s defiant comeback display, though Pochettino is still likely to recall his regulars to the starting line-up against Sunderland this weekend. Soldado’s display was particularly encouraging, as the Spaniard earned two assists against the Clarets, though he failed to find the net despite several decent chances. Nevertheless, Harry Kane will surely be reinstated up top on Saturday, and with Spurs now scoring an impressive nine goals in their last two home matches, the England Under-21 star is understandably leading this week’s Captain Poll. Paulinho, meanwhile, supplemented his strike with two assists last night, and could now come into contention for his first league start of the current campaign against the Black Cats at the expense of Mousa Dembele or Stambouli.

CLARETS FAIL TO CAPITALISE ON EARLY LEAD

There were five changes to Burnley’s line-up for yesterday’s cup defeat, with the likes of George Boyd, Danny Ings and Ashley Barnes all benched for the White Hart Lane encounter. Marvin Sordell put the visitors ahead just three minutes into the tie after latching onto Kieran Trippier’s long ball, before Ross Wallace doubled the Clarets’ lead with a deflected free-kick shortly after.

After the match, Sean Dyche confirmed that Trippier was withdrawn in the second-half due to a hamstring problem but is confident the right-back will be fit for this weekend. The Clarets boss also discussed Sam Vokes’ fitness after the forward played from start to finish:

“The massive positive is Sam Vokes coming through 95 minutes, when you think of the length of time out. He was a little ring-rusty, but that will come with fitness and training. We had to be cautious with Tripps at the end because he had a tight hamstring. I think he’ll be ok, but ultimately it’s a night of disappointment.”

The Scout Says: In spite of yesterday’s defeat, Burnley’s attacking form remains impressive, with 11 goals now accrued in their previous five matches in all competitions and a variety of their attacking assets getting their names on the scoresheet. With Crystal Palace, Sunderland and West Brom up next in the league, the Clarets have an opportunity to make that offensive form count; Ings has already earned over 18,000 new owners this week after fetching returns in each of his last three outings, and with last night’s rest ensuring he’ll be fully refreshed for the weekend, the 5.7-valued forward could be set to profit further. Boyd has, similarly, found himself in many managers’ transfer plans recently thanks to back-to-back goals in Gameweeks 19 and 20 and, having risen in price over the last few days, is clearly being regarded as more than just a cut-price bench-warmer.

VAN PERSIE A DOUBT FOR WEEKEND

Reports suggest that Robin van Persie is expected to miss Man United’s trip to QPR this weekend with the ankle problem sustained against Southampton last Sunday.

The Scout Says: Whilst the same report indicates that the Dutchman’s injury is only a minor one, and that he should return in time for United’s FA Cup duties in two Fridays’ time, his 3.8% owners are likely to be looking for an exit route anyway. The 12.3-priced forward has scored just once in his last five league appearances, and with the Reds stuttering against the Saints, faith in their attacking assets is at a low point, with many Van Persie owners shifting their target to the similarly-priced Sergio Aguero. Angel di Maria partnered Van Persie up top last time out, and should continue in that role at Loftus Road, though who will join him is uncertain; Radamel Falcao could be recalled after being dropped last weekend, though Louis Van Gaal also has the option of bringing Wayne Rooney further forward in what would be an encouraging move for his band of owners, bearing in mind that the United skipper has blanked in four of the last five Gameweeks from a deep-lying position.

Need a defender for 1 week before I use my WC, best pick? (1 FT):

A: Vlaar ---> Terry (swa away, good CS potential)
B: Vlaar ---> Stoke (lei) or Burnley (CPA) defender
C: Azpi ---> Baines (WBA at home, CS and attacking potential))

A lot of concern about the Southampton defence without. Let's look at the stats:

Southampton have kept 10 clean sheets in 21 games (42% of the time)

    When wanyama has played:
    kept 9 clean sheets in 19 (47%)
Conceded 14 goals out of the 15 total (93%)

    When schneiderlin has played:
    kept 8 clean sheets in 16 (50%)
Conceded 11 goals out of the 15 total (73%)

    When both have played
    Kept 8 clean sheets in 15 (53%)
Conceded 10 goals out of the 15 total (66%)

When neither have played they have kept 1 clean sheet in 1 (100%) [everton]

Clearly Southampton are stronger defensively when both are playing.
However, they have kept a clean sheet in the one match neither has played (against Everton).
They've also kept clean sheet against arsenal without schneiderlin.

The stats show that schneiderlin has slightly more effect in Southampton ability to keep clean sheets.
As schneiderlin might be back for game week 23 or 24 I don't think it should affect the defensive resilience, especially when you look at the matches they might miss:
    new SWA qpr WHM
Southampton should be able to pick up at least 2 clean sheets from these games regardless.

I think the fact that they have 4 of their regular back 5, with a capable replacement from what I've seen in Gardos, plus a work ethic in front of them, means there's no need to panic.

I think the debate is more about added risk. For example, many FPL managers were considering having 2 soton defenders prior to wanyama and schneiderlin injuries. I was in this camp. To me, having 2 soton defenders with this new development adds some added and arguably unnecessary risk, with the more prudent move to maybe diversify coverage. Of course, it may now also be more of a high risk / high reward to go ahead and have 2 soton defenders.

Although, I completely agree that no Wanyama/Scheneiderlin will leave huge holes in the middle, and possession along with winning 50/50 balls will suffer indeed, the sample size is quite small.
How many total games were Schneiderlin/Wanyama both out?

Just the one (against Everton) when they kept a clean sheet and scored 3 goals.

Sample sizes for soton defensive performance without schneiderlin and/or wanyama are too small to draw such definitive conclusions. Jury still out, IMO.

Agree it's small sample sizes as they have been fairly present.

Schneiderlin has missed 5 out of the 21 games completely and I've just put some underlying team stats below.
It confirms that Southampton are stronger with him than without. Having said this, keeping clean sheet against Everton and arsenal without him is no mean feat.

Think they looked to lack a bit of communication between the centre halves against Ipswich last night. A lot of long balls were allowed to bounce, this may sort itself out between games though if somebody decides to take charge of the situation.

My biggest worry for this gameweek would be amount of time on the road (away to Man U on Sunday, then Ipswich last night) and possibly lack of squad depth at the moment leading to fatigue. I don't see a clean sheet against Newcastle being on the cards but would love to be proven wrong.

Agree, small sample sizes when so hard to judge.

Just to throw some underlying stats into the mix...

The following stats are per game with schneiderlin/without schneiderlin:
      Defensive errors per game ...................0.18/0.40
      Chances conceded per game...............6.8/7.2
Shots conceded in the box per game....4.75/6.0

I've had to treat game week 13 as him playing the whole match (he played 45 mins)

Admittedly, this does give weight to the argument that Southampton are stronger defensively with schneiderlin. However, given the quality of the opposition and the short time schneiderlin is out, I think we should still see a couple of cleanies in the next 4.

But it does make me think about scaling back from my planned triple sou!

Add to that that Alderweireld is also missing and he is important for them. Any stats regarding CSs with and without him?

      1. Davros
        • 14 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

The sample size without alderwereld is even smaller unfortunately.
He has only missed 2 games completely (against WBA and MUN).
They kept a clean sheet against WBA and conceded 2 to MUN.

For what it's worth, with alderwereld:
        Kept 9 clean sheets in 19 (47%)
Conceded 13 goals out of the 15 total (86%)

It is worth pointing out that this weekends match will be the first all season that Southampton have been with out all three of alderweireld, wanyama and schneiderlin.

So perhaps it's best to wait and see after the match. Given that a number of us are playing wildcards next game week im think if they do poorly defensively then it may be best to wait and see but if they perform in line with the above stats then I'd carry on loading up defenders.

Another consideration is that if Southampton concede more shots, does this make Forster more attractive as it could lead to save points/ bonus points?

Thanks to Woy for pointing out an error in the above calculations that should be good news to Southampton defender owners.

Southampton have kept clean sheets in 47% of games, not 42% as stated above.
This is approximately the same % as when wanyama plays. However, as many have observed, this is necessarily a small sample.

The point I take is that there is not a drastic drop off when these two midfielders do not play.

Harrison Reed, Jack Cork and Steve Davies have done a great job in front of the back 4 in the past.
Against Everton Reed was my MOTM - a rear terrier breaking down every attack. He partnered Alderweireld at that time if I recall rightly. We will miss Wanyamas bulldozer affect (which is hilarious to watch as he ploughs attackers out of the way) but its the organisation and work ethic that someone referred to above that gives me confidence and I do still remain optimistic. It just adds extra risk as someone else said above but even as a Saints fan I wont be doubling up as tempting as it might be. Its nerve wracking enough watching your team without having 2 clean sheets at risk as well!!

Adm is a bone of contention... great fixtures, poor against the Saints. I have him in this WC.

Costa vs Aguero - also two sides of the fence there. Talk is that Costa vs Terry vs Fabregas is much of a muchness... but price is vastly different. Stats also show that Fab tends to not be so productive in the latter half of a season. So if you were to lose Costa, Fab is a possible "cover" for those points due to Costa's ownership.

Those transfers seem to be decent enough.

Or perhaps play with Kun / Costa / Kane(Austin) up front and see what you can come up with...

I'm weighing up bringing ADM. What's essential can change overnight. He could & is perfectly capable (esp if LVG plays to his strengths) of scoring double figures at QPR & then becomes essential with the fixtures. You have a strong side but it could be nice potentially be differential especially if Silva doesn't fire with the two tough fixtures.

Would Charlie Austin be the answer to Liverpool's goalscoring problems?

Still young, versatile, homegrown and more importantly scoring goals.

Wouldn't demand a huge contract, considering the Liverpool owners seem to have an agenda against signing a player on a high contract straight away.

Future penalty taker sorted for the club too when Gerrard leaves.

Has a slight air of Lambert about it (albeit younger). Goalscorers for, with respect, smaller clubs, can't always replicate it with bigger clubs. I don't know whether Austin would have the ability or spark to break down defensive, organised teams.

    3. djenzio

I think Bony would have been ideal for Liverpool but we don't know how he will fair at a top club.

Lambert is a very good example of an 'Austin' type player that can be immense for mid table teams but fail at the top level. Liverpool don't play the same type of football as QPR but Austin is young and he could learn to play the higher intensity style. Doubt QPR would sell him though.

Think Lambert has/had a lot more to his game than Austin. What I've seen of Austin, he's only good for getting on the end of things, whereas strikers at the big clubs need to offer more to the overall game (see Giroud), or be capable of creating chances for themselves (see Aguero)

Still a bit premature. I still think he needs a whole season of consistency before teams make a move for him. Austin's stock and output will drop this 2nd half of the season now that defenses have already played him once and they have much more video evidence of his movements on/off the ball. Naturally, teams start to focus on these strikers, and make it a priority to shut them down. The best teams know how to adapt. QPR are very one dimensional, I think most have already figured out that if you take Austin out of the game, QPR become static. Just my opinion

Liverpool don't seem to be able to attract the top tier of player, whether its because they don't want to pay the wages or they aren't owned by a sugar daddy or they simply can't attract the top players. Surely they would rather have Cavani, Falcao etc than Austin. No offense to Austin he has been great this season

Thought on this WC team? Lukaku a punt but I think it will come good. Shaw could do well too...

I worry about JWP's game time when everyone is fit, and then you have problems finding a similarly priced 4th midfielder.

Then I'm not convinced by Shaw. He has hardly been a threat going forward, and could very well lose his place to Young when he is fit.

I'll save you from my opinions on Lukaku. 😉

midfield is too weak. and I don't like the Shaw pick.

you have to pay one of JWP or Boyd every week unless you go for 4-3-3

I would downgrade Lukaku to someone like Austin or Ings and upgrade Boyd or JWP to a siggy or chadli or downing.

I'd lose Lukaku for one of the cheaper striker options (Berahino/Bojan/Ings/Sanogo/even Sakho when he comes back) and upgrade Boyd to 6-8m mid like Chadli/Downing/Siggy/Tadic)

Wanted to cover Chelsea, United and Saints defences (given the fixtures) and this is the only way I can afford to. Thoughts good sirs?

Slightly off topic, but a question for the Londoners:

I'd like to travel from the US to see the Arsenal v Chelsea game in April. Any recommendations for how to buy tickets this early and/or suggestions for which site is best to buy them?

    thanks in advance.

Ticket sites are notoriously dodgy. Usually I'd say go on a fans forum but a ticket for that game will be like gold dust.

It will probably sell out to season ticket holders and members

If you go on the Arsenal site and become a member then you may be able to do it that way

Otherwise you're going to have to pay over the odds

If anywhere it will be up North. So Newcastle.

Most grounds are sufficiently prepared for this not to be a problem. Main issues with snow or cold would be:

London clubs - problems with tubes more than anything, although QPR and Palace do historically have issues when it snows.

Burnley - smaller ground with more chance of cancellation.

    Panti Hamer
    Terry Wisdom Baird Wasil PVA
    ADM Hazard Sanchez Boyd Siggy
    Kun Costa Kane

Thoughts on this WC? I do have my second WC still so if ADM doesn't produce in his upcoming favourable fixtures (or when Kun invetiably gets injured) I can downgrade and then upgrade one of my poor defenders to Clyne/Bert

Can't really see many big transfers tbh, though Bony to City was a surprise.

They still only managed on goal against an appalling Sunderland side, and with Lallana out, it's hard to see where genuine creativity might come from against a deep defence.

Anyone know why there isnt much love for Rooney this week? He's against a QPR and will probably be played up-front.

I'm looking for something to push me into the top 50 so I've transfered out Costa and transfered in Rooney. I also plan to captain him. Everyone else seems to be captaining Aguero/Kane/Costa (out of the forwards). Any idea why?

I should mention that I will wildcard in 2 weeks so I will probably transfer out Rooney again then.

My other transfer for this week will be Sigurdsen to Chadli which seems to be a no brainer.
